“A scalable and replicable regional approach to address a national crisis”
2013 Expansion of SwISTEM Region
Teacher Professional Development1,339 teachers participated in seventy-five professional development sessions through SwISTEM since 2008.
Types of Professional Development Offered by SwISTEM
• Continuing education courses with emphasis on cutting edge pedagogical practices aligned the K-12 Indiana Academic Standards
• Professional development tailored as train-the-trainer opportunities for adults mentoring student-participants in SwISTEM outreach activities (e.g. SeaPerch, Tri-State Science and Engineering Fair, FIRST LEGO League)
• One-on-one, on-site curriculum and instructional assistance to complement the efficacy of the SwISTEM Equipment Lending Service.
• Pre-service teacher training in partnership with the USI Teaching Eagles Program.
The purpose of the Teaching Eagles
Scholarship Program is to increase the number of
content-rich, classroom-ready science and
mathematics teachers graduating from USI.
Patrons of the equipment lending service are given access to curriculum consultation and on-site instructional assistance by SwISTEM personnel and college faculty.
