Match backgroundAS Monaco FC will want to continue their impressive home form in this season's UEFA Champions League as theybid to build on a fine away display to reach their first semi-final since 2004 at the expense of Borussia Dortmund.

• Monaco were 3-2 winners in the first leg, Kylian Mbappé scoring twice to sandwich an own goal from Dortmund'sSven Bender. Ousmane Dembélé and Shinji Kagawa were on target for BVB.

• Only twice in UEFA Champions League history have a team overturned a first-leg home defeat to win the tie: AFCAjax against Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals (0-1 home, 3-0 away) and FC Internazionale Milano againstFC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 (0-1 h, 3-2 a).

• Both sides have recent quarter-final experience in the competition, Dortmund appearing in the last eight in 2013/14and Monaco last featuring the following season.

• Monaco and Dortmund are each targeting a fourth UEFA Champions League semi-final. Monaco have not contestedthe last four since losing to FC Porto in the 2004 final; Dortmund's last semi-final outing came in 2012/13, when theytoo would finish as runners-up.

Match backgroundMonaco• Monaco are in the European Cup quarter-finals for the fifth time overall. Their record to date: W2 L2.

• The Ligue 1 outfit reached the semi-finals in 1993/94 via the eight-team group stage, when the top two in each of thetwo sections progressed to the knockout phase.

• Monaco are making a second UEFA Champions League quarter-final appearance in three seasons. On their lastattempt in 2015, they beat English opposition on away goals in the round of 16, knocking out Arsenal FC (3-1 a, 0-2h); this year they repeated the trick against Manchester City FC (3-5 a, 3-1 h).

• Monaco became the ninth team to successfully overcome a two-goal deficit from the first leg of a UEFA ChampionsLeague knockout tie – and only the third club to achieve the feat twice after FC Barcelona and Chelsea FC – havingalso done so against Real Madrid CF in the 2003/04 quarter-finals (2-4 a, 3-1 h).

• The six goals Monaco conceded against City are the most ever shipped by a victorious side in a UEFA ChampionsLeague knockout phase tie. Three teams had previously exited after scoring five.

• Two seasons ago the Ligue 1 club lost to Juventus at this stage, going down 1-0 in Turin before a 0-0 home draw.

• Monaco have won five of their six home games in this 2016/17 UEFA Champions League, the exception a 1-1 drawwith Germany's Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the group stage. ASM also lost 3-0 in Leverkusen on matchday six.

• Overall, Monaco's record at home to Bundesliga clubs is W4 D3 L1; the sole blemish was a 1-0 reverse to VfLBorussia Mönchengladbach in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup second round (4-3 agg).

• Monaco's record in two-legged ties with German teams is W3 L1, with victories in the last three. This is their firstknockout tie against Bundesliga opponents since a 5-0 aggregate success against Hamburger SV in the 1996/97UEFA Cup third round.

• The Ligue 1 side have won all 12 of the UEFA competition ties in which they won the away first leg, including againstVillarreal CF in this term's play-off round (2-1 a, 1-0 h). They have never won the away leg 3-2 before.

• Monaco's penalty shoot-out record in UEFA competitions reads W1 L0:3-1 v Real Valladolid, 1989/90 European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final

Dortmund• This is Dortmund's eighth European Cup quarter-final, and their third in five years. The German club's last-eightrecord is W4 L3.

• On their most recent last-eight appearance three seasons ago, Dortmund succumbed 3-0 in the first leg at RealMadrid, bowing out despite a 2-0 home victory in the return.

• Thomas Tuchel's team have lost just three of 12 European away fixtures played since the start of last season (W7D2 L3), although they have a draw and a defeat in their last two matches.

• Dortmund have lost all five UEFA competition ties in which they lost the home first leg, most recently againstUdinese Calcio in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup first round. Then they fell 2-0 at home but won by the same scoreline inItaly, only to lose 4-3 on penalties.

• This is the fourth time in five seasons Dortmund have reached the quarter-finals of a European competition, havingyielded to Liverpool FC 5-4 on aggregate in last season's UEFA Europa League. Their sole last-eight success in those

Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?• Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 40 times, including FC Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund,Leicester City FC and AS Monaco FC in the 2016/17 round of 16. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FCin the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's victory against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by FC Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain in thisseason's last 16, when they lost 4-0 away but progressed thanks to a 6-1 home success. That eclipsed the previousrecord held by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals, when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won4-0 at home.

• Twenty-eight ties have been decided on away goals, including nine where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 27 ties have required extra time. Eleven have been settled by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, five round of16 encounters – including Bayern-Juventus in 2015/16 – the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea and Liverpool FC,and the 2013/14 final.

• Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The firsttwo-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005after a 2-2 aggregate draw, still the only quarter-final to go to penalties.

• The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Club Atlético de Madrid and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs.Thirteen have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid CF's defeat of Manchester City FC in the 2015/16semi-finals.

• Real Madrid won 6-1 at FC Schalke 04 in the 2013/14 round of 16, equalling the knockout phase record for thebiggest first-leg lead – Bayern's 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 round of 16. Bayerneventually went through 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the home second leg; that tie also featured more goals (13) over itstwo legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• Bayern hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match havingbeaten both FC Basel 1893 (2011/12) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 second leg.

• The biggest European Cup quarter-final victory was Real Madrid CF's 8-0 first-leg defeat of Sevilla FC in 1957/58.

• Manchester United FC's 7-1 win against AS Roma in 2006/07 is the biggest victory in a UEFA Champions Leaguequarter-final match. Bayern beat FC Porto 6-1 in 2014/15, FC Barcelona have twice won 5-1, against Chelsea FCafter extra time (1999/2000) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2010/11), while there have been four 4-0 victories.

• Chelsea FC-Liverpool FC in 2008/09 featured 12 goals over the two legs, a quarter-final record.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to lift the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998, Milan2003, 2007). Bob Paisley (Liverpool 1977, 1978, 1981) was the first coach to win three times, a feat Carlo Ancelotti(Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014) replicated.

• In 2014 Ancelotti also became the fifth coach to win the trophy with two clubs; Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983), José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004,Internazionale 2010) and Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern 2013) had previously achieved the feat.

• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy, with Milan (1989, 1990) the last club topick up consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997)and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose.

• Only two sides have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) andJuventus (1996, final in Rome). Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern werebeaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know?• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 triumph against Bayer 04Leverkusen on 7 March 2012, a feat reproduced by FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at FC BATE Borisov on 21October 2014. Eleven more players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently CristianoRonaldo for Real Madrid on matchday six in 2015/16.

• Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League stage with 11 goals in 2015/16, eclipsing hisown mark of nine goals in 2013/14, which Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15. Lionel Messi got ten goals in 2016/17;Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), Ruud van Nistelrooy (2004/05), Filippo Inzaghi and Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03)managed eight.
