Match backgroundBorussia Dortmund's already slim hopes of reaching the UEFA Champions League round of 16 could disappearaltogether on matchday five, when opponents Tottenham Hotspur FC have the chance to clinch first place in Group H.

• Dortmund have collected only two points from their first four fixtures and are level on points with APOEL FC.Tottenham, by contrast, have ten points – including three from the 3-1 matchday one defeat of Dortmund – andbooked their place in the knockout stages with an impressive victory against Real Madrid CF last time out.

• Dortmund must therefore win and hope Madrid do not do likewise away to APOEL to stay in contention for a top-twoplace.

• Tottenham would ensure first place with a win, or if they at least match Madrid's result due to their superior head-to-head.

Previous meetings• Dortmund held sway when these sides met in the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League round of 16, winning both legs for a5-1 aggregate triumph. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Marco Reus (2) got the goals in a 3-0 first-leg victory inDortmund before Aubameyang struck twice more at White Hart Lane, Heung-Min Son scoring a consolation for thehosts.

• The line-ups at the BVB Stadion Dortmund on 10 March 2016 were:Dortmund: Weidenfeller, Piszczek, Hummels, Schmelzer, Durm, Castro, Bender (Subotić 58), Weigl, Mkhitaryan,Reus (Kagawa 82), Aubameyang (Adrián Ramos 82).Tottenham: Lloris, Trippier, Alderweireld, Wimmer, Davies, Carroll, Onomah, Mason, Chadli (Dembélé 58), Eriksen(Lamela 65), Son (Kane 76).

Match backgroundDortmund• The German club are yet to win in this season's group stage; at home they lost 3-1 to Madrid on matchday twobefore being held 1-1 by APOEL in their last fixture.

• BVB are without a win in their last three European home games (D1 L2). They have won only one of their last nineEuropean matches (D3 L5), home and away, and had lost four in a row prior to drawing at APOEL on matchday three.

• Dortmund's record at home to English clubs is W6 D4 L1; the sole defeat came at the hands of Tottenham's northLondon neighbours Arsenal FC, who were 1-0 winners in the 2013/14 group stage.

• Contesting the group stage for the 12th time and a sixth in seven years, Dortmund have reached the knockout stageon their last four UEFA Champions League appearances. In 2016/17, they beat SL Benfica 4-1 on aggregate in theround of 16, subsequently losing 6-3 to AS Monaco FC over two legs (2-3 home, 1-3 away).

• That home defeat by Monaco ended Dortmund's seven-match unbeaten home run in Europe (W5 D2).

• Dortmund scooped seven points at home in last season's group stage, overcoming Sporting Clube de Portugal 1-0and Legia Warszawa 8-4 – the latter providing the most goals in a UEFA Champions League match.

Tottenham• Mauricio Pochettino's side have collected four points from their two away games this season, winning 3-0 at APOELbefore the 1-1 draw in Madrid on matchday three.

• Tottenham had lost their previous two European away games before winning at APOEL. They picked up four pointson their travels in the 2016/17 group stage.

• The Lilywhites have won three of their last 13 European away matches (D4 L6).

• Tottenham's record in Germany is W3 D2 L6; that 2016 defeat at Dortmund is their sole loss in the last four visits(W1 D2). They most recently drew 0-0 at Bayer 04 Leverkusen in last season's group stage.

• Their heaviest European defeat came in Germany – an 8-0 loss at 1. FC Köln in the 1995 UEFA Intertoto Cup.

• This is Tottenham's third time in the group stage and a second foray in as many seasons – the first time they havemanaged consecutive European Cup campaigns.

• Twelve months ago, Tottenham came third in their group and moved into the UEFA Europa League, where they fell3-2 on aggregate to KAA Gent in the round of 32.

Coach and player links• Davinson Sánchez played under Dortmund coach Peter Bosz at AFC Ajax in 2016/17.

• Ömer Toprak, Gonzalo Castro and Heung-Min Son were team-mates at Leverkusen between 2013 and 2015.

Head coachPeter BoszDate of birth: 21 November 1963Nationality: DutchPlaying career: SBV Vitesse, AGOVV Apeldoorn, RKC Waalwijk, SC Toulon, Feyenoord, JEF United Chiba (twice),FC Hansa Rostock, NAC Breda Coaching career: AGOVV Apeldoorn, BV De Graafschap, Heracles Almelo (twice), SBV Vitesse, Maccabi Tel-AvivFC, AFC Ajax, Borussia Dortmund

• After three-year spells at Vitesse, RKC and in France with Toulon, the midfielder's playing career took off following amove to Feyenoord in 1991; he won the Eredivisie in 1992/93 and three Dutch Cups, also picking up eight caps forthe Netherlands.

• Bosz left Rotterdam after five years, proceeding to enjoy two Japanese stints with JEF United and also appearing inthe Bundesliga for Hansa.

• Having retired in 1999 aged 36, Bosz rejoined home-town club Apeldoorn as coach, winning the national amateurchampionship in 2002. Head-coach opportunities then came with De Graafschap and Heracles – whom he led to thetop flight in 2005 – before an appointment as Feyenoord technical director in 2006.

• Returning to coaching and Heracles in 2010, he kept the club in Eredivisie mid-table safety, but eventually stooddown in 2013 and took charge of Vitesse for three years. Israel and Maccabi later came calling in January 2016, withthe chance to work under sporting director Jordi Cruyff.

• After six months in Israel, however, Bosz was back in the Netherlands, signing for Ajax. Moulding a young squadand sticking closely to the attacking, high-intensity principles laid down by Johan Cruyff, he guided theAmsterdammers to second place in the table and the UEFA Europa League final, catching the eye of Dortmund in theprocess.

Mauricio PochettinoDate of birth: 2 March 1972Nationality: ArgentinianPlaying career: CA Newell's Old Boys, RCD Espanyol (three times), Paris Saint-Germain, FC Girondins de BordeauxCoaching career: RCD Espanyol, Southampton FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC

• A tough-tackling central defender, Pochettino was a product of Newell's Old Boys in Argentina where he played withthe legendary Diego Maradona during his five years in the senior squad.

• He moved to Europe in 1994 to join Spanish side Espanyol and won the Copa del Rey in 2000, before joining Parisin January 2001. After a stint at Bordeaux, returned to Espanyol, initially on loan, before hanging up his boots in 2006having won another Copa del Rey. Capped 20 times by Argentina, whom he represented in the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

• Switched to coaching with Espanyol in January 2009, with the club lying third from bottom in the Spanish Liga;guided them to a tenth-placed finish. Under Pochettino, three further mid-table finishes followed before a slow start to2012/13 prompted his departure.

• Surprisingly resurfaced in England at Southampton in January 2013, succeeding Nigel Adkins; introduced a high-pressing, attacking style which helped the club keep clear of relegation trouble. In his first full season in charge, tookSaints to eighth position with 56 points – a new club record.

• Appointed Tottenham manager on a five-year contract in May 2014, and led the side to the English League Cup finalin his debut campaign, only to lose out to Chelsea FC. The following season, 2015/16, Pochettino's side were incontention to win the club's first league title since 1961 until a draw at Chelsea with two games to go; neverthelessfinished third to book a UEFA Champions League return, and finished a place higher, as Premier League runners-up,in 2016/17.
