Match backgroundSporting Clube de Portugal started Group D positively but have lost their last two fixtures and another defeat at thehands of Juventus could prove terminal to their prospects.

• The Portuguese side are third in the standings on three points, three behind their opponents and six adrift of leadersFC Barcelona. Sporting will be unable to finish in the top two if they lose and Barcelona avoid defeat at bottom clubOlympiacos FC, who have lost all three games to date.

• Juventus have recovered from losing their first fixture to win the last two, most recently a 2-1 triumph at home toSporting. Juventus are through with a win if Barcelona avoid defeat in Greece.

Match backgroundSporting• Prior to matchday three, Sporting had not played an Italian team for six years, since two contests against SS Lazio inthe 2011/12 UEFA Europa League group stage (2-1 home, 0-2 away).

• That win in Lisbon means Sporting's record at home to Italian sides now reads W4 D7 L2. Overall it is W5 D10 L13.

• Sporting are unbeaten in their last four games at home to Serie A visitors (W2 D2).

• Beaten 1-0 by Barcelona in their most recent home fixture, Sporting were 3-2 winners at Olympiacos on matchdayone. It was their first away win in the competition proper since a 1-0 victory at FC Basel 1893 on 9 December 2008;their subsequent record had been D1 L6, including three losses in last season's group stage.

• The Lisbon club have lost four of their last six European home games, winning one.

• The Portuguese team were 5-1 aggregate winners against Romania's FCSB in the play-offs, following up a 0-0home draw with a 5-1 success in Bucharest. That victory in Romania ended Sporting's four-game losing streak inEuropean away matches.

• Sporting are in the group stage for a third time in four seasons. In 2016/17, they came fourth in their group behindBorussia Dortmund, Real Madrid CF and Legia Warszawa.

• Sporting qualified by finishing third in the Portuguese Liga in 2016/17.

Juventus• Juventus's 14 encounters with Portuguese sides have ended W8 D2 L4; away it is W2 D1 L3. All four of thosedefeats came against SL Benfica.

• Juventus got the better of Portuguese opposition in last season's round of 16, beating FC Porto 3-0 over two legs (2-0 away, 1-0 home).

• Juve lost last season's final 4-1 to Real Madrid CF in Cardiff. They were also beaten 3-0 by FC Barcelona onmatchday one, the first time since the 2014/15 group stage they had lost successive European games; by beatingOlympiacos they avoided suffering three straight defeats in Europe for the first time since 1993/94.

• The 0-0 draw at Barcelona in last season's quarter-final second leg was the only one of Juve's six away matches in2016/17 that they failed to win, with five clean sheets and just one goal conceded to 12 scored. Defeat at Camp Nouon matchday one ended a six-game unbeaten away run in Europe.

• This is an 18th UEFA Champions League group stage campaign for Juve, and a sixth in succession.

• The Italian outfit have reached the knockout rounds in their last three attempts, having finished third in their sectionin 2013/14.

Coach and player links• Jorge Jesus guided Benfica to victory against Juve in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League semi-finals (2-1 home, 0-0away).

• Jesus's only other match against an Italian side was a 1-0 defeat by AC Milan in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stagewhen he was coaching SC Braga.

• Jérémy Mathieu was in the Barcelona team beaten 3-0 at Juventus in last season's quarter-final first leg. He hadcome on as a substitute in the 3-1 victory in the 2015 UEFA Champions League final.

• Alex Sandro played in Portugal for Porto between 2011 and 2015; his record against Sporting was W4 D3 L1.

• Rui Patrício and William Carvalho were in the Portugal side that beat Blaise Matuidi's France 1-0 in the UEFA EURO2016 final.

• Rui Patrício and William Carvalho also got the better of Marko Piaca and Mario Mandžukić in Portugal's 1-0 last-16

Head coachJorge JesusDate of birth: 24 July 1954Nationality: PortuguesePlaying Career: Sporting Clube de Portugal, GD Peniche, SC Olhanense, CF Os Belenenses, GD Riopele,Juventude SC, UD Leiria, Vitória FC, SC Farense, CF Estrela da Amadora, Benfica e Castelo Branco, SRAlmancilenseCoaching career: Amora FC, FC Felgueiras, CF Estrela da Amadora (twice), Vitória FC, Vitória SC, Moreirense FC,UD Leiria, CF Os Belenenses, SC Braga, SL Benfica, Sporting Clube de Portugal

• A midfielder at Sporting, Jesus enjoyed a long if low-key career with a number of smaller Portuguese sides beforemoving into coaching with fourth division Amora after hanging up his boots in 1989, leading them to a title. Then ledFelgueiras from the third division to the Liga in successive seasons, though they were relegated in his third campaignin 1995/96.

• Further Liga experience came at hometown side Estrela da Amadora, Setúbal and Guimarães, though he enduredanother relegation with Moreirense in 2004/05. In 2006/07, he guided Belenenses to fifth place and the PortugueseCup final, where despite losing to Sporting they earned a place in the UEFA Cup.

• Even better followed at Braga in 2008/09 as he guided them to UEFA Intertoto Cup success and subsequently theUEFA Cup round of 16. A fifth-place Liga finish prompted Benfica to lure him back to Lisbon in 2009 and Jesusrewarded their faith with the league title and League Cup in his debut campaign.

• After completing a hat-trick of Portuguese League Cup triumphs in 2012, Jesus's Benfica came tantalisingly close toan even bigger treble in 2013, only to finish runners-up in both the Portuguese Liga and Cup and lose the UEFAEuropa League final to Chelsea FC.

• Signed a two-year contract extension in June 2013 and led Benfica to another UEFA Europa League final thefollowing season, although they again lost, this time to Sevilla FC. That disappointment was somewhat soothed by aclean sweep of the three domestic trophies, with another league and League Cup secured in 2014/15, during whichJesus became the Benfica coach with the most victories and the most league matches. Unexpectedly left to joinSporting in June 2015, taking the club to the Liga's runners-up spot in his first season – behind Benfica – and third thefollowing year.

Massimiliano AllegriDate of birth: 11 August 1967Nationality: ItalianPlaying career: UC Cuoiopelli, AS Livorno Calcio (twice), Pisa Calcio, AC Pavia, Pescara Calcio (twice), CagliariCalcio, AC Perugia, Calcio Padova, SSC Napoli, AC Pistoiese, Aglianese Calcio 1923Coaching career: Aglianese Calcio 1923, SPAL 1907, US Grosseto FC, US Sassuolo Calcio, Cagliari Calcio, ACMilan, Juventus

• A creative attacking midfielder, Allegri started out in his native Tuscany with Cuoiopelli and then Livorno, hishometown club. First appeared in Serie A for Pisa against Milan in 1988/89 but played only twice that seasonbefore heading back to Livorno.

• Returned to Serie A after helping Pescara win promotion in 1992. The following term he scored 12 goals underGiovanni Galeone, the coach Allegri still considers his mentor. After leaving Pescara in 1993, had spells at Cagliari,Perugia, Padova and Napoli before hanging up his boots back in Tuscany with fourth division Aglianese in 2003.

• Moved straight into coaching at Aglianese, prior to taking charge at SPAL and Grosseto. In November 2008 he wonthe Panchina d'Oro (golden bench) as the third division's best coach having led Sassuolo to promotion.

• Had earlier been appointed by Cagliari whom he led to ninth place in 2009, winning the Panchina d'Oro again, thistime as Serie A's best coach. A bad run of results the following season prompted Allegri's dismissal on 13 April 2010 –although he had already done enough to earn a two-year contract at Milan.

• Allegri's first season at San Siro ended with his new club winning the Scudetto for the first time since 2004.Dismissed in January 2014 with Milan 11th in Serie A, that summer he was appointed to succeed Antonio Conte atJuventus. Allegri won the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia with Juventus in his first season, also taking his side to thefinal of the UEFA Champions League, and added further domestic doubles in both 2015/16 and 2016/17, when theyagain reached the UEFA Champions League final.
