Wow, Industry!Wow, Industry! is the umbrella title of six independent exhibitions, each complete in itself, which through their presentation of six different manufacturing companies take us back to our recent past – the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries.

The exhibitions stem from the awareness that global economic trends have almost obliterated industrial manufacturing in Slovenia. Compared to the situation in the former Yugoslavia, where manufacturing played a major role under socialism, it has been pushed into the background today, with other business sectors assuming a more prominent role in the economy. The changing times we live in are a good reason, then, to look back at our industrial heritage and analyse its significance for today.

The exhibitions present the companies Gorenje, IMV (Industrija motornih vozil – Motor Vehicle Manufacturing), Mura, Talum, Zlatorog, and the Ravne Ironworks. These six companies followed different business and administrative paths and operated in different social contexts. Most of them had developed from small trade businesses established before World War II, or even much earlier, experienced extraordinary growth under socialism, and then enjoyed more or less positive outcomes after 1991.

The exhibitions present industry through its creativity – a subject very often overlooked. Both under socialism and today, manufacturing companies have employed creativity not only when making technological improvements, but also when designing the visual appearance of their products, packaging, and advertising. They have also supported creativity – financially, organizationally, and materially – in cultural and civil-society initiatives and organizations in their local areas. The exhibitions display posters and photographs from cultural events, advertisements, promotional posters, technical instructions, logos, buttons, flags, and numerous products for the general consumer, from cleansers, cars, and cookers to clothing. We can see how light and heavy industry influenced our visual culture and contributed to the fact that we lived, and still live, in such a designed world and constructed reality.

While each of the six exhibitions is a complete story, together they present a panoramic picture of the general contours of our age.

The exhibitions have been prepared by museum curators and experts in collaboration with the respective companies. The shows are accompanied by a large joint catalogue of more than 200 pages. Here you will find essays on each of the individual companies and shared thoughts about the establishment of the advertising profession, the development of the companies, administrative changes, manufacturing’s contribution to the rise in social and living standards, and the typical features of urbanization in both the former Yugoslavia and since – that is, in two very different social systems.

Uf, industrija!Uf, industrija! je skupni naslov šestih samostojnih in vsebinsko sklenjenih razstav, ki predstavljajo razvoj šestih industrijskih podjetij v drugi polovici dvajsetega in začetku enaindvajsetega stoletja.

Razstave izhajajo iz zavedanja, da so globalni ekonomski tokovi skorajda izbrisali industrijo iz Slovenije. V socialistični Jugoslaviji je imela industrija pomembno vlogo, danes pa je potisnjena v ozadje. Poudarjeno gospodarsko vlogo so prevzele druge ekonomske panoge. Tako je prehodnost časa, v katerem živimo, pravšnja spodbuda, da se ozremo po njeni dediščini in analiziramo njeno aktualnost.

Razstave predstavljajo Gorenje, Industrijo motornih vozil, Muro, Talum, Zlatorog in Železarno Ravne. Podjetja so delovala v raznih družbenih kontekstih in hodila po raznih gospodarskih in upravnih poteh. Večina jih je zrasla iz obrtnih delavnic pred drugo svetovno vojno ali še veliko prej, se v času socializma izjemno razvila in imela po letu 1991 bolj ali manj ugodno usodo.

Razstave predstavljajo industrijo v luči njene kreativnosti, ki je najpogosteje njena spregledana vsebina. V socializmu in danes industrija ni bila kreativna le pri tehnoloških izboljšavah, temveč tudi pri oblikovanju vidne podobe izdelkov, embalaže, oglaševanja in propagiranja ter je finančno, organizacijsko in materialno podpirala kulturne in civilnodružbene iniciative in organizacije, delujoče v lokalnem okolju. Razstavljeni so plakati in fotografije kulturnih akcij, reklame, propagandni plakati, tehnična navodila, blagovne znamke, značke, zastavice in številni izdelki množične porabe od pralnih praškov, avtomobilov, štedilnikov in oblek. Kažejo, kako sta lahka in težka industrija vplivali na razvoj vizualne kulture, torej na to, v kako oblikovanem svetu in konstruirani realnosti smo živeli in še vedno živimo.

Vsaka od šestih razstav je sklenjena zgodba, vseh šest pa panoramsko opozarja na splošne značilnosti časa.

Razstave so pripravili muzejski delavci in strokovnjaki v sodelovanju s podjetji. Spremlja jih skupen obsežen katalog z več kot 200 stranmi. Vsebuje strokovna besedila o vsakem podjetju posebej in skupne razmisleke o vzpostavitvi oglaševalske stroke, razvoju podjetij, spremembah v upravljanju in vplivu na rast družbenega in osebnega standarda ter značilnostih urbanizacije prostora v nekdanji Jugoslaviji in po njej, skratka v dveh različnih družbenih sistemih.

Gorenje with a VisionCurated by Milena Koren Božiček In 1950, the Gorenje company was created from the District Metal Company (Okrajno kovinsko podjetje) in the village of Gorenje; this company had produced farm equipment and performed blacksmith, locksmith, and mechanical work. Even in its first decade, Gorenje very ambitiously followed an active, forward-looking plan of work concentrated on development and growth. By the end of the 1960s, its openness to new business opportunities had taken it in the direction of producing the household appliances it is known for today all over the world. Its path has taken the company from solid-fuel cookers to electronically equipped household and kitchen appliances. Gorenje has been successful in every period of its history – sometimes its success was seen more clearly in its public profile, other times in its development projects, with the results, meanwhile, reaching into the global sphere.

If at the beginning the company was following the trends of the time, after 1991 it became a challenger focussed on the kind of superior design that stands out in the global market. In the new millennium, its achievements in design, marketing, progressive technologies, and functionality have made it a trendsetter among international companies with highly successful business profiles. In all periods, Gorenje has recognized superior achievements in all areas of life and has adopted an attitude of great social responsibility both in the Velenje area and throughout Slovenia.

The exhibition presents the company’s products and marketing strategies, past and present, with an accent on its vision of the future. It adopts the form of a timeline, with the sections “Follower”, “Challenger”, and “Trendsetter” representing the most distinctive aspects of the company’s development.

Gorenje, zraslo leta 1950 iz Okrajnega kovinskega podjetja v vasi Gorenje, ki je izdelovalo kmetijske stroje in opravljalo kovaška, ključavničarska in mehanična dela, si je že v prvem desetletju delovanja ambiciozno zastavilo aktivno, napredno ter v razvoj in rast usmerjeno delovanje. Odprtost za vedno nove poslovne priložnosti ga je že konec šestdesetih let prejšnjega stoletja usmerila v proizvodnjo gospodinjskih aparatov, in po njih je danes poznano po vsem svetu. Prehodilo je pot od štedilnikov na trdo gorivo do najsodobnejših elektonskih gospodinjskih in kuhinjskih pripomočkov. Podjetje je bilo uspešno v vseh obdobjih, nekatera med njimi so bila bolj očitna v javnosti, druga v razvojnih projektih, rezultati pa so odmevali po vsem svetu.

V začetku je podjetje sledilo trendom, po letu 1991 pa je postalo izzivalec, usmerjen v vrhunsko oblikovanje, ki je opažen na svetovnem trgu. V novem tisočletju je z dosežki v oblikovanju, trženju, naprednih tehnologijah in funkcionalnosti postalo usmerjevalec med svetovnimi podjetji visoke poslovne uspešnosti.

Razstava predstavlja proizvode podjetja in njegove tržne strategije v preteklosti, sedanjosti in s poudarkom na viziji prihodnosti. Poteka kot časovni trak, ki s sklopi »Sledilec«, »Izzivalec« in »Usmerjevalec« simbolizira najbolj prepoznavne značilnosti razvoja podjetja.

Razvoj tovarne Industrije motornih vozil v Novem mestu se je začel leta 1954, ko so se v sodelovanju z zahodno nemškim podjetjem DKW lotili sestavljanja dostavnih in osebnih vozil. Leta 1958 je stekla proizvodnja lastnih dostavnih vozil, nato pa prikolic, ki so bile najprej namenjene za izvoz na švedski trg. Po prekinitvi sodelovanja z angleškim Austinom so leta 1972 podpisali pogodbo s francoskim Renaultom, to pa je proizvodnjo osebnih avtomobilov dvignilo na evropsko raven. Podjetje IMV se je razvilo v tri velike uspešne tovarne, v Revoz d.d. Novo mesto, ki danes proizvaja več kakor 200.000 avtomobilov na leto; Adrio mobil, specializirano za prikolice, avtodome in hišice; in TPV d.d., ki razvija in izdeluje pomembne avtomobilske dele.

Poleg osebnih in dostavnih avtomobilov ter prikolic in avtodomov, med katerimi so bili mnogi najdeni v slabem stanju daleč stran od Novega mesta in so danes zgledno restavrirani, predstavlja razstava tudi njihovo tehnično dokumentacijo in makete. Govori o več kot polstoletnem razvoju oblikovanja avtomobilov in znakov IMV, Adrie mobil, TPV in Revoz. Poleg tega vključuje tudi efemerno, a pomembno reklamno in tržno produkcijo, kot so katalogi, prospekti, posterji, tehniška navodila in interni časopis, skratka celostno podobo podjetij, ki prikazujejo razvoj prevladujočih estetskih norm in družbenih vrednot med letoma 1954 in 2012.

The history of the Novo Mesto–based Motor Vehicle Manufacturing Company (Industrija motornih vozil – IMV) dates to 1954, when the factory began assembling delivery and personal vehicles by agreement with the West German company DKW. In 1958, it began making its own delivery vehicles and, later, caravans, which were initially intended for export to the Swedish market. In 1972, after the factory’s work with the British company Austin ended, IMV signed a contract with the French company Renault, which raised its production of personal motor vehicles to a European level. IMV eventually developed into three large and successful factories: Revoz d. d. Novo Mesto, which today produces more than 200,000 cars each year; Adria Mobil, which specializes in caravans, motor homes, and mobile houses; and TPV d. d., which develops and manufactures major automotive parts.

Along with its display of personal and delivery vehicles, caravans, and motor homes – many of which were discovered in poor condition far from Novo Mesto and have been beautifully restored – the exhibition also presents their technical documentation and models. It testifies to more than half a century in the design of motor vehicles and logos for IMV, Adria Mobil, TPV, and Revoz. Also included are ephemeral but important advertising and marketing products, such as catalogues, brochures, posters, technical instructions, and in-house newsletters – in short, the visual identities of IMV and its successor companies, which point to changes in the prevailing aesthetic norms and social values between 1954 and 2012.

Železarna Ravne se je razvila iz Jeklarne grofa Thurma, katere začetki segajo v 17. stoletje. Obnova Jugoslavije po drugi svetovni vojni v okviru kapitalne izgradnje, kot so v prvi petletki imenovali gradnjo gospodarske infrastrukture z državnimi sredstvi, je omogočila uvedbo novih tehnologij in proizvodov, predvsem kvalitetnih in plemenitih jekel, izdelkov za gradbeništvo in papirno, lesno, kovinsko predelovalno, avtomobilsko in drugo industrijo. Največjo proizvodnjo so dosegli leta 1987 s 237.000 tonami.

V bazični industrijski proizvodnji se je kreativnost izražala predvsem s kakovostjo končnega izdelka. Dosegli so jo z raznimi fazami delovnega postopka od priprave vložka in taljenja, valjanja in kovanja do toplotne in mehanske obdelave. Bolj kakor od strojev je bila odvisna od znanja in ustvarjalnosti ljudi. Kreativnost pa se kaže tudi v celostni podobi podjetja, propagiranju izdelkov, ne glede na naravo težke industrije, in podpori urbanizacije prostora, izobraževanja in kulturne ustvarjalnosti zaposlenih. Železarna je podpirala mednarodne kiparske simpozije Forma viva, slikarske likovne kolonije, glasilo Koroški fužinar in številna pevska, glasbena in gledališka društva. Vzpodbujala je kreativnost zunaj delovnega okolja in omogočila dostop do sodobne kulturne ustvarjalnosti. Vplivala je tako na družbeni kontekst kakor na zasebno življenje ljudi.

Mother Factory – The Ravne IronworksCurated by Karla Oder

The Ravne Ironworks developed from the Count von Thurn Steelworks, whose beginnings date to the seventeenth century. The modernization of Yugoslavia after World War II, carried out as part of the country’s “capital construction” – as the state-funded building of the economic infrastructure was called during the first five-year plan – made it possible to introduce new technologies and products, especially high-quality and noble varieties of steel, as well as steel for the construction industry, the paper-, wood-, and metal-processing industries, the automotive industry, and others. The largest output was achieved in 1987, with 237,000 tonnes being produced.

In basic industrial manufacturing, creativity is expressed, above all, in the quality of the end product, which was arrived at through different phases of the work process, from the preparation of the feedstock, to melting, rolling, and forging, to thermal and mechanical processing – all of this depended more on people than on machinery. But at the Ravne Ironworks, creativity was also expressed in the company’s visual identity, in its product advertising (despite the nature of heavy industry), and in its support for the area’s urbanization and the education and cultural creativity of its employees. The ironworks was a supporter of the international sculpture symposium Forma Viva, an art colony for painters, the newsletter The Koroška Ironworker (Koroški fužinar), and many choral, musical, and theatrical associations. The company encouraged creativity outside the work place and facilitated access to contemporary cultural activities. In this way, it played a formative role both in the social context and in people’s private lives.

Murska Sobota je bila najbolj mlado mesto od konca šestdesetih do začetka osemdesetih let prejšnjega stoletja, ko so prihajali priseljenci iz regije, ker so tu zaradi rastoče tovarne oblačil Mura dobili službo in stanovanje. Mure je nastala leta 1945 po nacionalizaciji dveh šiviljskih podjetij, leta 1925 ustanovljene Cvetičeve in leta 1932 Šiftarjeve šivalnice perila. Kmalu je postala največja industrija konfekcije v Srednji Evropi, in to je še danes.

Mura je dajala delovna mesta, gradila stanovanjske bloke in počitniška naselja. Zaradi nje se je razvil avtobusni promet. Podeljevala je štipendije, odkupovala sodobna umetniška dela in z njimi opremljala svoje tovarniško okolje. Povezovala nas je s sodobnimi evropskimi in svetovnimi modnimi trendi. V pretežno ruralni prostor Prekmurja je prinašala sodobno oblikovanje na področju oblačilne kulture in medijskega komuniciranja ter nove blagovne znamke.

Razstava je zasnovana kot večplasten projekt. Poleg muzejske razstave oblek, skic in propagandnega materiala iz vseh obdobij podjetja obsega še zunajgalerijski postavitvi fotografij delavk Mure umetniškega fotografa Jožeta Kološe-Kološa v vitrinah trgovin po mestu in skulptur na dvorišču Mure d.d. – v stečaju. Prav tako je del razstave zagon digitalnega muzeja generacij na spletni strani muzeja, ki predstavljala interaktivno povezavo med muzejem in ljudmi in je nekakšen kolektivni spomin Murske Sobote in širše regije.

Mura – OpenCurated by Metka Fujs

In the period from the late 1960s to the early 1980s, Murska Sobota became Slovenia’s youngest city as newcomers from the region settled here because of jobs and housing provided by the growing Mura clothing factory. The company was founded in 1945 after the nationalization of two sewing companies, the Cvetič company (est. 1925) and the Šiftar company (est. 1932). Soon Mura became the largest garment manufacturer in Central Europe, which it still is today.

Mura offered jobs and constructed housing estates and holiday villages for its employees. The factory was the reason the local bus system developed. It provided grants and purchased contemporary artworks, which were displayed on the premises of the factory. It introduced us to contemporary European and global fashion trends, and in the areas of dress culture and media communications, it brought modern design to Prekmurje, a region that had long been mainly rural.

The exhibition is designed as a multilayered project. In addition to the museum presentation of dresses, sketches, and promotional materials from every period of the company’s history, it also includes an installation of photographs of Mura workers by the fine art photographer Jože Kološa – Kološ in shop windows around the city and an installation of sculptures in the courtyard of Mura d. d. (in bankruptcy). By the same token, another segment of the exhibition is the creation of a digital “museum of generations” on the museum’s website, which will present an interactive link between the museum and the public and serve as a kind of collective memory for the city of Murska Sobota and the wider region.

Tovarna Zlatorog je bila eno najstarejših industrijskih podjetij v Mariboru in Sloveniji. Razvila se je iz milarne na Rotovškem trgu, ki jo je leta 1878 kupil Karl Bros. Leta 1905 je proizvodnjo preselil na zemljišče, kjer se je pozneje razvila in razširila Tovarna Zlatorog. Leta 1920 so začeli v njej izdelovati pralno milo Zlatorog.

Med letoma 1946 in 1951 je bila ena najpomembnejših kemičnih tovarn v Jugoslaviji. Poznali so jo po kozmetiki, pralnih praških, čistilnih sredstvih, zobnih pastah itd. Po obsegu izdelave in prodaje pralnih praškov je bila med vodilnimi v Jugoslaviji in v Srednji Evropi. Leta 1957 je podpisala licenčno pogodbo s tovarno H. Schwarzkopf iz Hamburga in začela izdelovati šampone, barve in lake za lase. V začetku sedemdesetih let prejšnjega stoletja je prva v Jugoslaviji razvila proizvodnjo deodorantov. V sodelovanju s podjetjem Margaret Astor je izdelovala dekorativno in preparativno kozmetiko. Po raznih licencah so izdelovali preparate za sončenje, zobne paste, kreme za roke, sami so razvili žensko in moško kozmetično kolekcijo. Leta 1990 je 51 odstotkov vrednosti tovarne, takrat ene večjih in modernejših v Srednji Evropi, kupil koncern Henkel in leta 1996 še preostalih 49 odstotkov. V začetku 21. stoletja je bila družba Henkel-Slovenija največji izvoznik na mariborskem področju.

Z inovativnimi arhitekturnimi in oblikovnimi prijemi govori razstava o zgodovini tovarne in njenih produktih. Predstavlja nekdanjo modernost, ki je bila povezana s pojmom Evropa. Modernost je prežemala proizvodni proces, proizvode in propagando ter v ničemer ni zaostajala za tedanjimi mednarodnimi trendi.

The Secrets of Beauty – The Zlatorog Factory MariborCurated by Marjan Matjašič, Mira Grašič, and Nika Novak

The Zlatorog Factory was one of the oldest manufacturing companies in Maribor and, indeed, in Slovenia. It developed from a soap factory on Rotovž Square, which Karl Bros bought in 1878. In 1905, Bros moved production to the plot of land on which the Zlatorog Factory would later develop and grow. In 1920, the factory began making Zlatorog laundry soap.

From 1946 to 1951, Zlatorog was one of the most important chemical factories in Yugoslavia. It was known for its cosmetics, laundry detergents, cleansers, toothpastes, and so on. In the size of its production and sale of laundry detergents it was among the leaders in Yugoslavia and Central Europe. In 1957, it signed a licensing agreement with the Hamburg-based H. Schwarzkopf Company and began producing shampoos, hair dyes, and hairsprays. In the early 1970s, it was the first company in Yugoslavia to develop the production of deodorants. By agreement with the Margaret Astor company, Zlatorog produced decorative and preparative cosmetics. Under various licensing agreements, it made suntan lotions, toothpastes, and hand creams, and developed its own lines of women’s and men’s cosmetics. In 1990, the Henkel company bought a 51-percent share in the factory, and in 1996, it bought the remaining 49-percent share. At the turn of the 21st century, the company Henkel-Slovenija was the largest exporter in the Maribor region.

The exhibition employs innovative architectural and design approaches to convey the history of the factory and its products. It presents the modernity that was once closely tied to the concept of Europe. This sense of the modern permeated the factory’s production process, products, and advertising, and did not in any way lag behind the international trends of the time.

Tovarna aluminija Talum Kidričevo je naslednik Tovarne glinice in aluminija Boris Kidrič. S svojo dejavnostjo zaznamuje širšo okolico in ima izjemen gospodarski pomen. Leta 1942 je nemški trust Vereinigte Aluminium Werk začel v Strnišču graditi tovarno glinice. Dokončali so jo po drugi svetovni vojni in jo slovesno odprti leta 1954. Redna proizvodnja glinice in aluminija je stekla leta 1955.

Talum še naprej podpira kulturne in družbene dejavnosti, kar je bilo značilno tudi za njegovo predhodnico. Z njegovo pomočjo nastajajo razstave, knjige, pesniške zbirke, zgoščenke, zborniki in koncerti. Zlasti se Talum odlikuje s podpiranjem slikarske dejavnosti, saj velja za pomembnega mecena sodobne likovne produkcije v Sloveniji in je tudi lastnik dragocene likovne zbirke, ki šteje več kot 200 del. Med arhitekturne bisere modernizma spada tudi upravna zgradba podjetja, ki jo je v petdesetih letih prejšnjega stoletja projektiral arhitekt Danilo Fürst. S fotografijami pa je tovarno in ljudi v njej ovekovečil mojster fotografije Stojan Kerbler. Pod okriljem družbe delujeta pihalni orkester in moški pevski zbor. Talum sponzorira nogometni klub Aluminij v Kidričevem in sodeluje na športnih prireditvah. Z donatorskimi sredstvi pomaga posameznikom in društvom.

Razstava predstavlja tako razvoj tovarne in kot njeno vključenost v lokalno in širše okolje. Poudarek je na predstavitvi surovine in njeni vsestranski uporabni vrednosti. Aluminij, ki je bil v prejšnjem stoletju sinonim za modernost in razvoj, je tudi danes kovina prihodnosti.

The aluminium factory Talum Kidričevo is the successor of the Boris Kidrič Alumina and Aluminium Factory (Tovarna glinice in aluminija Boris Kidrič). The factory’s work has an impact on the entire area and carries exceptional economic importance. In 1942, the German trust company Vereinigte Aluminium Werke started to build an alumina factory in Strnišče (as Kidričevo used to be called). The building of the factory continued after World War II, and it officially opened its doors in 1954, with regular production of alumina and aluminium beginning at the end of that year.

Alongside its main business production, Talum continues to pursue an open policy of supporting cultural and social activities, which also characterized its predecessor. It has contributed to the creation of exhibitions, books, poetry collections, CDs, and concerts. In particular, Talum has a distinguished record of supporting painting and is considered an important patron of contemporary art in Slovenia. It also has its own valuable art collection, which consists of more than 200 works. The company’s administrative building, designed in the 1950s by the architect Danilo Fürst, is a jewel of modernist architecture. Meanwhile, the factory and the people who work in it have been immortalized in the photographs of master photographer Stojan Kerbler. A wind orchestra and a male chorus also operate under the company’s wing. And Talum sponsors the football club Alminij in Kidričevo and contributes to sport events. Its funding also helps individuals and organizations obtain needed equipment of various kinds.

The exhibition presents both the history of the factory and its involvement in the local area and wider region. The show’s emphasis is on presenting the raw material and its all-round utility. A synonym of modernity and progress in the 20th century, aluminium is viewed even today as the metal of the future.
