A student’s point of view

“Speaking to a colleague also doing a Masters degree,Ifounditinterestingthedifferencesbetween our courses. She had to print, bind and post her essay 4 days before the deadline to make sure it was delivered. As satisfying as the feeling is when binding and posting your essay, I must admit the process where I am able to login (at any time) and just click the submit button is wonderful. Within seconds you feel the adrenalin leaving your body and you can sit down without worrying about the work getting lost in the post.

And what if I need to make a change? No problem, make the change to the document. Save it and upload it again.”

ilearn is great because it brings everything together in one place – materials, students, forums, tutor

contact, external resources – everything!

FREEphone 0800 COURSES / 0800 268 7737

Application and enrolment

Q: Will I be able to afford it? How do I pay?

A: Paying for your studies is an investment in your future. It should not be viewed as an expense or cost because there is clear evidence to show that qualifications lead to an increase in salary. However, paying for your studies is not always easy, so we suggest you consider the various funding options on pages 18 and 19.

Q: What do the fees include?

A: All study materials, either text-based or online and student handbooks are supplied. For many of our programmes core text books are also included. You will be allocated a tutor for academic support who you can contact as often as you like by email and telephone. You will also have access to a programme co-ordinator for administrative support.

Q: I have plenty of work experience in my area of interest but no real qualifications. Can I still apply?

A: For many courses, experience can be just as valuable as qualifications so if you haven’t studied for a while you need not be at a disadvantage. Each applicant is considered on his or her individual merits.

Please call one of our experienced, friendly programme advisors to check your eligibility on FREEphone 0800 COURSES / 0800 268 7737.

Q: I already have a qualification. Will this qualification allow me to gain exemptions from the course and will the cost be reduced?

A: Differentproceduresapplyfordifferentprogrammes. It is often possible to gain exemptions based on previous qualifications and work experience. The best way to find out is to apply. All applications for exemptions will be considered on merit. If exemptions are granted the cost of the programme may not necessarily be affected.

Each programme is fully supported by an academic tutor and student support coordinator. You can contact your tutor by email whenever you like, and your Student Support Coordinator can be contacted by email or telephone during our office hours.

Q: Is the use of ilearn mandatory?

A: ilearn is mandatory for students studying the online programmes. However, for other programmes the Virtual Campus is there to enhance students’ learning and does not replace the normal comprehensive paper based study materials.

Q: How long does it take?

A: It depends on the programme but most programmes have a minimum and maximum study period. Generally you will spend as much or as little time as you would if you were taking the programme by formal part-time study but this is, of course, very flexible.

Q: I work full-time and have a family, how will I find the time?

A: Flexibility is key. All of our programmes allow you to work full-time as you can fit your studies around your job and personal commitments. Our programmes require from as little as 7 hours per week study time.

Your student support coordinator is always on hand should you need any help with handing in assignments, logging into ilearn or deferring your studies. In most cases, courses have a minimum and maximum completion time to suit your circumstances.

Q: Can I study anywhere in the world?

A: Yes. Programmes are flexible with study materials that allow you to study completely independently. You will log in to the virtual learning environment and interact with your tutors and peers as part of your studies. The only compulsory campus attendance is normally for examination purposes, which can be arranged locally if you are overseas.

Q: Is the certificate the same as that which campus students receive?

A: Yes. The final certificate that you receive will be awarded directly from the university, and will be exactly the same as if you had studied on campus.

Q: How many hours per week should I devote?

A: We recommend between 8 and 15 hours per week, depending on the programme. Flexible learning is about good time planning and building momentum. It is also about self-motivation.

Regularstudyismoreeffectivethanheavybutintermittent periods of study. Always plan to spend as much time on the programme as you would by part-time formal study.

Q: What if I need more time to complete my studies, can I take a break?

A: If you fall behind, become ill, relocate or need to defer your studies we will always try our best to accommodate you and your student support co-ordinator will be on hand to explain the options available to you.

Q: What happens if I fail something?

A: Don’t worry, if you fail an assessment you are allowed at least one resubmission. Your academic tutor will provide you with detailed feedback to help prepare you for your resubmission.

Q: How do I sit exams?

A: UK students can sit their examinations at a location near our Head Office in Coventry or at any other pre-approved venue with the help of our examinations coordinator. Examinations can be arranged locally, although this will incur an additional charge.

Q: Is there a graduation ceremony?

A: For most of our university accredited programmes you will be invited to a formal graduation ceremony, usually held on the university campus with full time students.

Q: Will I be able to succeed?

A: We believe that your success is our success. Our experienced, friendly programme advisors will assist you through the application process to ensure you enrol on to a programme that is right for you. Motivation, time management and organisation on your part, combined with quality study materials and superior support throughout your studies are key to your success.

Q: What if I find the course too hard?

A: We will not enrol you on to a programme unless we are confident that you will succeed. If you feel that you have started at the wrong level, let us know and we’ll transfer you to the right one, wherepossible.WealsoofferaMONEYBACKGUARANTEE which means you can try a course and if you are not completely satisfied for whatever reason you can return your materials within 30 days and receive a full refund.

fuses in with my way of life, and does not interrupt my crazy days that mainly start at about 4:20am. It’s simply the answer for people that never want to give up their way of life for a few months studying. It gives you a bit of both really, I’ve come to call it the best of both worlds.”

“Usually at my age you leave college then spend 3 years at university with no money and having to pay a large sum for your education, which immediately puts you in debt when you have finished. I enjoy my job which is full time as a HR assistant and receptionist, I can earn a full time salary alongside gaining a university level qualification in the same time as if I were to be studying full time. I can manage my job and my studying therefore gaining the best of both worlds. I have found this invaluable as when I have finished my course I will have a HND (hopefully to be carried on with to get a degree) and valuable work experience.”

conceptual graphic designs building on skills developed in the Introduction to Design Skills I module and use current media technology to execute these designs. Continuous exploration of both traditional and digital mediums will be encouraged to create a variety of artefacts from book cover layouts, basic web design layouts and so forth, and which relate strongly to the creative nature of the module.

Design VocabularyThis module will teach you about the visual principles fundamental to the design process. Language is expressed through vocabulary, and this is the terminology associated with design principles. A strong grounding in a basic Design Vocabulary is therefore essential to all areas of practice, whether the work to be undertaken isdigital/analogue,commercial/self-initiated,2d/3d,ortime-based.

Exploring Digital/AnalogueThis module has been designed to synthesise the learning undertaken in Introduction to Design Skills I & II and extend students’ capability to experiment within the software through reality, virtual reality and moving image.

Students will study the works of graphic designers and visual artists, and whenever possible visit design studios, art galleries and design festivals to develop their understanding of the interplay between analogue and digital forms of creative work.

Design History and Critical ThinkingThis module provides an introduction to the critical and historical background of art, design and visual culture and aims at developing the skills required for conceptual and critical thinking within art and design. The online materials will introduce you to a variety of texts, imagesandsourcesaimedatofferingan overall perspective of the history of design, key movements, artists, concepts, contexts and aesthetics that have shaped contemporary design practice and debate.

Level 5

Studio Design ProjectsThis module deepens and extends your creative practice in a variety of media, and aims to develop your skills and understanding of graphic design, utilising the skills learned at level 4. You will be encouraged to work flexibly, developing concepts and visual outcomes

across a range of practical, industry-focussed projects.Youwillbeofferedarangeofindustry-leveland/orconceptuallyexploratorydesignbriefs to choose from, and you will deploy appropriate design processes and problem-solving approaches in answering these briefs.

Reading Images and PracticeAs part of a broader examination of the fields of design and visual communication in the context of key theoretical and critical debates, this module builds on the knowledge and research skills that you have acquired during certain modules, including the Design History and Critical Thinking module.

Practice and Theory Studio BriefsThis module provides an opportunity to explore the interrelationships between theory and practice, through practical studio-based projects which emphasize and require a high level of theoretical understanding and place considerable importance on research and self-defined learning.

Self Promotion and Packaging ISelf Packaging 1 has been designed as an introduction to self promotion in a digitally enhanced world. The module aims to introduce you to contextual theories of marketing disciplines used in industry as a means to promote image and brand identity.

Level 6

Self Promotion and Packaging IIHaving been introduced to the basic principles of associated marketing disciplines and technologies in Self Promotion and Packaging I, you will further learn how to promote your individual qualities and strengths through a series of self-promotional outcomes showcasing your skills and abilities. This will evidence your professional work and self-development in the form of a digital portfoliospace,blog,twitterfeedand/orotherpromotional media. There will be an emphasis within the current module on writing skills for CV and professional correspondence, and also on how to harness the power of social networking for self-marketing purposes.

Major Project: Self-Initiated BriefsEmerging into the workplace can be a very difficult transition for individuals not equipped with a self-motivated attitude towards their own production and a developed ability to make self critical judgements about the work.

Within this module, you will build on acquired undergraduate knowledge, using a process of constant questioning and exploration of ideas within an industry related context.

Major Project: Industry/Competition BriefsThis module provides an opportunity to tackle industry-focussed design briefs against the backdrop of national and international competition schemes such as D & AD (Design and Art Direction), YCN, (Young Creatives Network), and ISTD (International Society of Typographic Designers), as well as collaborative projects originated by industry. The module enables you to consider the professional contexts for your practice in light of emerging technologies, cultural trends, and industrial demand, resulting in a professional portfolio of work which meets industry expectations.

DissertationThis module enables you to develop a substantial written text on a self-selected subject relating to subjects studied earlier in the course, and within the fields of the subject discipline. You will consolidate and extend their knowledge and understanding of some of the ways in which histories, theories, cultural, social, technical or ecological issues inform contemporary professional design practice.

Taken together, such skills are very appealing to a wide range of employers and not just those in specifically psychological areas.

This is a recognised Bachelor’s Degree, ideal for those with an interest in psychology and the wide range of careers available with elements in the area. Course Content (Modules)Comprises three stages, 120 credits in each stage:

Level 4 - (120 credits)Consists of 8 modules worth 15 credits each:

1. Key Skills for Psychology Part IThis module will provide you with the basic skills to produce a research report from beginning to end including experimental design, statistical data analysis, the use of resources and software, writing and presentation skills, ethical issues and general study and research skills. 2. Key Skills for Psychology Part IlThis module follows on from Key Skills for Psychology Part I, providing you with a vital grounding for psychology.

3. Social and Developmental PsychologyThis module will provide you with an understanding of how certain behaviours andexperiencescanbeshapedbydifferentsocial contexts (the family, peers, society) and the impact of these on social and emotional development. Key areas within social psychology (attitudes, interpersonal communication, social influence, groups, identities and ethics) and developmental psychology (genetic and environmental influences, language, cognitive and emotional development and ethics) are covered. 4. Issues in Child Development and Social PsychologyThis module introduces you to more specific domains of child development and social psychology. This module carries slightly greater focus on developmental psychology. However, each topic covered builds on previously covered topics; ending with an overview of normal and non-normal developmental profiles. Similarly, each topic in the social part to some extent builds on earlier topics. These begin with applied social cognition, and will also consider social psychology in a court setting.5. Theoretical Foundations in PsychologyThis module will provide you with an overview of the theoretical, philosophical and historical foundations of psychology. Often defined as the “science of the mind”, you will be made aware that there has been much debate as to how to define both “science” and “mind”. To illustrate these debates the module focuses ondifferentapproachestopsychology, forexample: introspectionism, behaviourism, psychoanalysis, cognitive psychology, and artificial intelligence. 6. Introduction to Abnormal & Health PsychologyYou will examine the way in which these disciplines apply psychological knowledge to an understanding of health and illness, and the interventions used to improve health or relieve the symptoms of illness. You will examine how concepts of health have changed over time, what is meant by normality and abnormality, andthedifferentmodelsthatpsychologistshave used to understand the causes of mental ill-health. You will examine specific health problems, both physical and mental, including eating disorders, stress, trauma, and sexual disorders.7. The Psychology of Everyday LifeDuring this module you will look at a number of topical issues in order to demonstrate how psychology can provide insight into people’s behaviour, and how we benefit from a scientific psychological approach. Topics included will depend upon the interests and expertise of the academicstaffinvolvedinteachingthismoduleand therefore may vary from time to time. However, questions which might be addressed include: Does criminal profiling work? Can we measure intelligence? Why do we sleep?

Do dreams have meaning? Why do we forget things? How accurate are eyewitness accounts of crime?8. Fundamentals of Cognitive PsychologyOur experience of the world is an interpretation based on many cognitive processes being carried out by the brain. Because these processes are so automatic, and their outcome so convincing, people are often not aware that what they are experiencing is merely an interpretation, and as such can be inaccurate. This module will challenge you to think more clearly about this, and consider the ways in which the brain constructs its interpretation of the world, and the ways in which this interpretation can be misleading.

Level 5 - (120 credits)Consists of 8 modules worth 15 credits each:

1. Research Techniques for Psychology: StatisticsThis module develops a critical understanding of the principles of data collection for psychology, and considers the theoretical bases of various qualitative and quantitative methods. Theoretical, conceptual and ethical issues are covered; the emphasis is on ensuring that you understand the logic behind the techniques covered, so that you know when it is appropriate to use a particular approach, and how to interpret its output. This module will focus largely on quantitative data analysis techniques such as t-tests, linear regression and Analysis of Variance.2. Research Techniques for Psychology: MethodsThis module follows on from Research Techniques for Psychology: Statistics.3. BiopsychologyBiopsychology introduces you to the physiological mechanisms that underlie all behaviour and cognition. Initially, the module introduces the philosophy that underpins biological psychology, and discusses issues such as determinism, reductionism and free will. The module then focuses on capture, communication and processing of information in the nervous system and looks in detail at the mechanics of these processes. 4. Personality, Intelligence & PsychometricsYou will develop an understanding of key contemporary approaches to the study and assessment of personality and intelligence. In this module you will examine the assumptions behind theoretical approaches to personality and intelligence; the nature of personality and intelligence; the theory of psychometrics; the strengths, implications and limitations of differentapproaches;andtheapplicationsof theory. You will develop basic skills in understanding and using psychological tests. 5. Contemporary Social Psychology This module explores contemporary social psychology by examining a range of theoretical perspectives. The concept of “levels of analysis”

is used to structure comparisons between theories and approaches. The module explores modern European forms of social psychology that arose as a critique to traditional social cognitive approaches, and place more emphasis on social and collective processes (for example, social constructionism).6. Learning, Memory and PerceptionUnderlying all psychological functioning is the ability to perceive, remember, and alter our behaviour in response to information in the world. These basic psychological processes of perception, memory and learning were the first areas of study for empirical psychology and this module examines both the historical development of these areas as well as the current state of knowledge in each area.7. PsychopathologyThis module will introduce you to the various psychological disorders, as well as their aetiology and treatment. This module will also look at models of psychopathology, as well as its classification and diagnosis. Broad theories of the development of the various psychological disorders will be touched on, drawing from psychodynamic, cognitive, and neuroscience perspectives, as well as social factors.8. Lifespan DevelopmentThis module will provide you with an overview of human development across the lifespan, includinghowchildhoodexperiencesaffectlaterdevelopment.Differentapproachestohuman development will be discussed and compared, including: attachment theory, behavioural genetics, psychodynamic theories, andbiopyschosocialapproaches.Differentdomains of human development will be covered, e.g. cognitive, social, emotional, and moral development across the lifespan.

Specific syndromes addressed include: major depression and mania, schizophrenia, substance-related disorders,disordersofageing/cognition,andsuicide.3.
