Devised by Philip Brophy,Beautiful Cyborg 2 is a livesurround-sound event. Projectedfilm images of contemporaryJapanese science fictionanimation such as Armitage III,The Guyver, Tokyo Babylon,Sailor Moon, Cobra & Akira areaccompanied by live onstageelectronic music and digitalsound effects in this futuristicaudiovisual spectacle.

Beautiful Cyborg 2 celebratesthe visual themes typical of the hard science fiction andcyberpunk anime in whichJapan excels. To this is added a heady mix of musical motifs, textural sheets, pulsatingrhythms and unearthly soundsthat float throughout theauditorium in a hovering, shimmering, soaring andbombastic sound field.

More than a techno-fest with a pretty rush of alien, cyborg, robot, android, re-designedhuman and hi-tech mechanicimages, Beautiful Cyborg 2goes to the core of Japaneseaudio-vision to uncover whatBrophy has noted is “thepsycho-acoustic world turnedinside-out” (Real Time No.32,1999). The newly imagined and realized music of BeautifulCyborg 2 floats asynchronously, following the emotionalcompaction and contradictionthat typifies the post-humanpsyche in Japanese anime.
