H O T/C O L D P L A T E

Cat. 3 5 1 0 0

1 GENERAL

The conventional Hot Plate, see our well known Cat. No. 7280, has been designed to per-form rapid precise screening of narcotic type analgesic drugs (morphine, codeine, etc.) on the animal by the hot plate test.

This method, devised by N.B. Eddy and D. Leimbach evaluates the reaction time of mice which are dropped on a heated surface and thus confronted with a heat stimulus applied to the plantar surface.

When a central analgesic is administered to the animals this reaction time is markedly in-creased.

The new Hot/Cold Plate 35100 has been designed to study a recently announced cold re-ceptor system of neurons, which are not activated by cold but rather by chemicals.

These neurons are present in the CNS as well as PNS, but they are different from the neu-rons which sense pain.

Apparently no one knew this in the past and we are confident the Cold Plate Test could be useful in studying this new family of neurons as well as the traditional cold receptors.

1.1 Instrument Description

The Instrument features:

1) a Cabinet or original design, incorporating the Plate proper, see paragraph 1.3, and

2) a Command/Display Module, see paragraph 1.5

3) two Plexiglas restrainers (one for mice and one for rats) see paragraph 1.2.

1.2 Animal Restrainers

The animals are confined by a clear removable cylinders made of clear Plexiglas. The stan-dard package includes two of them: one for mice and one for rats.

1.3 Plate

The Plate is cut from a 10mm thick aluminium slab and is mated to high surface heat-ing/cooling elements (3 Peltier Cells) to provide even temperature to the entire test area.

A solid state temperature regulator senses the plate temperature via a digital thermometer and powers the heating/cooling elements through a proportional circuit which minimizes temperature overshoot.

1.4 Additional Plate

An “auxiliary” Hot Plate, Cat. No. 35100-002, cab be supplied as optional in case the user plans to run even a conventional Hot/Plate Test.

In fact both the control and the power supply are flexible and powerful enough to enable the researcher to connect an “auxiliary” conventional Hot Plate with the same operational fea-tures of a complete Hot Plate.

Taking advantage of the power supplier and the logic circuits of the 35100, the auxiliary conventional Hot Plate, stripped by all control-regulations functions which are embodied in the Hot/Cold instrument, becomes much simpler and can be offered at a very convenient price.

1.4.1 Important Notice on Temperature Range

The plate temperature can be set by the operator in the range 2-66°C. The extremes of this ample range can be reached, provided the room temperature remains in the interval 18-23°C.

Needless to add, 18°C is the temperature below which the plate can hardly reach 66°C and 23°C is the temperature over which the plate cannot descend down to 2°C.

1.5 Command/Display Module

This module of original design is located on the instrument front panel, and comprises a graphic display and a command keyboard.

The multifunction liquid-crystal graphic-display monitors the plate temperature in 0.1°C steps and shows the reaction time in 0.1 s increments.

Reaction time is the time elapsing from the moment you drop the animal onto the plate to the moment the stereotype of pain/strong discomfort takes place.

The graphic display presents all available commands: the operator sets the experiment con-figuration via the commands keyboard located on the right of the display.

1.5.1 Graphic Display

It is basically divided into 4 areas.

The three lines of the top area show:-

1) the plate temperature 2) the reaction time 3) the instrument mode, i.e.,

COLD, HOT, or OK, which means the preset tempera-ture has been reached.

The two lines in the middle show:

1) the logo, the manufacturer’s name and the firmware code V1.0 2) the catalogue number and the name of the instrument

The last two lines are dedicated to notes and explanations about the function keys

Press the key F4 (ESC): the following displays will appear in loop-mode sequence:

which monitors the status of the instrument (temperature set point),

supplies date & time,

The “box” at the right of the display win-dow shows the key function abbreviation, meaning:-

• OPR Operation

• FNC Function

• MEM Memory

• ESC Escape

1.5.2 Keyboard

The keyboard, consisting of 4 soft push-button keys F1, F2, F3 and F4, sets the experiment parameters, see paragraph 1.5.3 for reference.

If a key is kept depressed more than one second, the command is repeated at a higher speed.

1.5.3 Function Key Abbreviations

The function of each key depends on the software sub-routine and is clearly indicated on the box at the right side of the display, by abbreviations, meaning respectively:-

The F4 key, which has the function of ESCAPE key, en-ables the operator to leave a menu and go back to a previ-ously selected one.

2 DATA ACQUISITION & DATA PRINT-OUT

The Hot/Cold Plate is a microprocessor controlled unit. The experimental data, stored in the 35100 internal memory and shown on its graphic display, can be directly exported to the PC.

The USB connector type B enables the operator to connect it directly to PC via its USB port. This connector is located on its back panel (see paragraph 3.5-Connections and Figure 2 “Back Panel”).

The connection to PC is also possible via the serial port RS 232 C via the Delta 9-pin fe-male connector (COM 1).

Communication is managed by the dedicated CUB Package Cat. 52050-11, supplied as standard or by the 52010 Win-DAS Software.

The CUB 52050 is a Windows® based Data Acquisition Software Package, which en-ables the research worker to route to the PC the data originated by all Ugo Basile instru-ments and store them into individual files, ready to be easily managed by most statistical analysis packages available on the market.

The Win-DAS Software helps the researcher to acquire data from all Ugo Basile instru-ments.

2.1 7145 MiniPrinter

The MiniPrinter 7145 is compact a thermal array device, supplied as op-tional part, suitable to print experimental data on its 58mm wide paper.

The MiniPrinter does not require any mains cord: it drains the minimum power it needs from the instrument to which it is linked, via the data transmitting cable.

See paragraph 3.5 for connection to the Hot/Cold Plate via the 10-pin cable pro-vided with the Mini-Printer and paragraph 5.1 to enable the data print-out on the MiniPrinter.

3 INSTALLATION

3.1 Unpacking & Preliminary Check

Check the contents of the shipment for completeness, packing list to hand, and visually in-spect the instrument as soon you take it out of the packaging. Use the Check List supplied.

If the instrument is damaged or, after having tested it, fails to meet rated performances, no-tify the carrier and our company immediately.

3.2 Notes on the Instruction Manual

The 35100 Instruction Manual included in the Basic Unit package is necessary for the cor-rect installation and operation of the instrument.

We recommend to keep the manual in good conditions, ready to be consulted by the quali-fied personnel who use the instrument.

Free of charge copies of the instruction manual are available upon request: please contact our service department (see paragraph 9.6-Customer Support) specifying the series number of your instrument.

3.3 Assembling the Instrument

Put the instrument on a stable and flat bench or table surface. Position on the plate one of the two animal restrainers supplied with the instrument.

Once the Hot/Cold Plate is assembled, do not attempt to lift or move the combined unit. In particular, do not incline the base, as the Perspex restrainer may accidentally come off the plate.

Please note the grids which protect the cooling fans on the cabinet side. Make sure they are not obstructed. Obstructions which prevent the cooling fans to operate efficiently may de-grade the instrument performance.

3.4 Before Applying Power

Take a look at the Power Module, on the right of the Hot/Cold Plate back-panel, which en-compasses – from left to right - the connection of the mains cord, the mains switch and the fuse holder.

3.4.1 Mains Switch

This two-pole toggle switch, which complies with international safety standards, provides a visual cue, meaning:-

• OFF when pressed to the right (“O” side)

• ON when pressed to the left (“I” side)

3.4.2 Fuse Holder

The fuse holder comprises two fuses, one on the live, the other on the neutral. We recom-mend 5A fast-blow fuses (type F5A). To replace the fuses, see paragraph 9.1-Electrical.

3.4.3 Mains Cord

The mains cord is a standard cable, Cat. No. E-WP 008. Make sure your power outtake is provided with a reliable ground connection, see also 3.5 & 3.6.

3.4.4 Input of Power Supply

A switching power supply powers the Hot/Cold Plate. This is a compact, highly reliable prod-uct providing excellent electric specifications and full compliance to the EMC and Safety standards, which will ensure a long trouble-free service.

Its mains input is universal: in plain words, it accepts any voltage from 85 to 264 Volt AC. Forget the voltage selector and any associated doubt or problem, for instance in case you have to move your Hot/Cold Plate from USA or Japan to Europe, or viceversa.

3.5 Connections

Connect the mains cord to a power outtake, provided with a reliable earth connection, protected by a differential earth-leakage switch (CGFI) that breaks at the threshold of 0.03A, within a max. acceptable delay of 1s. The maximum breaking compliance required by the CGFI is10kA at rated current of 6A.

3.5.1 Back Panel

Beside the mains module, positioned on the right side of the panel, the back panel em-bodies a connection module, see Figure 2 “Back Panel”, where you can see, from left to right:-

USB: this USB type B connector for linking the Hot/Cold Plate to the USB port of the PC

COM1: this delta 9-pin female connector for connection to the serial port RS232C of the PC

COM2: a second delta 9-pin connector (male) for connection in cascade mode to other UB Instruments

PEDAL SWITCH: a 4-pin connector for the pedal switch. Insert the male connector of the pedal

switch cable until it locks into its socket; a “click” confirms it is locked

PLATE: a 7-pin circular connector to link a second optional HOT PLATE (see paragraph 1.4)

MINI PRINTER: a 10-pin connector to the Mini Printer Cat. 7145, see also (see paragraph 2.1).

Mismatching the connection is prevented by the individual pin arrangement of every con-nector.

You will also note on the left the receptacle of the room-temperature sensor. This sensor supplies an important information to the electronics which controls the fans and the plate heating/cooling system.

3.6 Additional Safety Consideration

a. Place your Hot/Cold Plate on a flat surface; b. Do not obstruct free and comfortable access to the power module;

c. Do not obstruct the grids of the cooling fans, on the sides of the cabinet; d. Use original accessories and spare parts only, see also paragraph 10; e. Immediately disconnect and replace a damaged mains cable; f. Do not operate the instrument in hazardous environments or outside prescribed

environmental limitations (i.e. +18C°/+23C°, 60% relative humidity, non-condensing), see also paragraph 1.4.1;

g. Do not spray any liquid on the connectors; h. Keep inflammables far from the instruments.

4 OPERATION

4.1 Switching On

Switch on the 35100 by acting on the mains switch placed on the back of the instrument see paragraph 3.5.1 & Figure 2.

The software takes some seconds to perform a complete checking of the electronic circuit. During the checking, the display shows the software version which is actually installed, e.g., “V1.0”, which appears on the right side of the screen, at the intermediate level, see para-graph 1.5.1.

The software version is necessary in case of communication with our laboratory for opera-tional or servicing problems.

After some seconds the display shows the configuration of the previous experiment, saved in the internal memory of the microprocessor

4.2 Working Temperature

Select a working temperature, taking into account what indicated in the literature, the drug administered, if any, the type of experiment you are supposed to carry out. Se also para-graph 1.4.1-Important Notice on Temperature Range.

Depress the F1 key (OPR) from the main menu.

The display shows:

F1 (PL1) first plate (Hot/Cold)

F2 (PL2) second optional plate 1

Depress the F2 (PL1) or F2 (PL2) key.

The display will shows two different options:

F1 (CHR) start and stop the la-tency-time chronometer (stop-watch)

F2 (SET) enter the working tem-perature menu

F3 (CAL) enter the calibration menu.

Depress the F2 (SET) key.

Adjust the temperature to the desired value by acting on the F1 (UP ) or F2 (DWN) key.

The set temperature appears on the display

A momentary action will increase the set temperature of one step, corresponding to 0.1°C.

By keeping F1 or F2 depressed the operator can set the desired temperature at a higher speed., Once the desired temperature has been set, depress the F3 (OK ) key to confirm or the F4 (NUL) to go back to the main menu, leaving the temperature unaltered.

In a matter of 5-10 minutes the plate temperature will reach the preset value.

4.3 Carrying out the Test on the Animal

Drop the animal onto the plate, and immediately depress the pedal switch or the F1 (CHR) key, followed by the F1 key again (STA). A momentary action is sufficient. The latency time display starts.

When the threshold of pain is reached, and animal licks its paws according to an easily identifiable stereotype behaviour, depress again the pedal switch or the F1 (STP), read the reaction time (LATENCY TIME), and remove the animal from the plate.

The datum, shown on the display and automatically stored in the 35100 internal memory, can be printed on the Mini-Printer or routed to the PC, see paragraph 5.

4.3.1 Note on Wet Surfaces

We recommend to absorb with cotton wool any occasional large emission of urine during familiarization or test time. A plantar surface, if wet by urine, will be definitely less sensitive to the hot stimulus because of the large specific heat of any watery solution.

Conversely, it will be more sensitive to cold stimulus, because any watery solution increases the heat loss of the animal limbs and hence increases the cold feeling.

Speaking about wet surfaces, bear in mind that when working with the Plate at Winter tem-peratures, i.e., one digit Celsius degree (below 10°C), the air moisture will condense on the Plate.

Be patient and dry the Plate before the first test and at least between each test.

4.4 How to Set a Customized Experimental Configuration

From the main menu, depress the F2 (FNC) key, followed by the F1 (OUT) key; the display shows:-

Depress again the F2 (FTR) key; this function enables the operator to personalise the basic datum, by adding:

• Sequence number (see paragraph 4.4.1)

• experiment number (see paragraph 4.4.2)

• gender of the animal (see paragraph 4.4.3)

All the available loop selections for each additional information are displayed on the middle of the graphic display.

Scan them by the F1 (UP ) or F2 (DWN) keys, select the suitable one and confirm the selec-tion by depressing the F3 (OK ) key, or avoid one or more features by depressing the F4 (NUL) key.

By depressing the keys shortly, the numerical value will increase or decrease of one step. By keeping them depressed longer, the selection can be made at higher speed.

The selected features will be kept in the 35100 internal memory even if the instrument is turned off.

To erase one or more features previously set, simply enter this software level, highlight the concerned feature and depress the F4 (NUL) key.

After entering the last feature (M or F, male or female), the software goes automatically back to the main menu.

4.4.1 Animal Sequence Number

The first additional information to be defined is the animal sequence number. This sec-tion is highlighted as soon as the F2 (FTR) key is depressed.

Use the F1 (UP ) or F2 (DWN) keys to set the desired sequence number from 01 to 99 and confirm it by the F3 (OK) key.

The sequence number will automatically increase by one figure at any subsequent meas-urement. It trips once a datum has been acquired and recorded, indicating the fresh se-quence number ready for the next measurement.

If a sequence number is not necessary, depress the F4 (NUL) key.

IMPORTANT: when a fresh experimental session is started, the sequence number can be carried on from the number reached at the end of the previous trial or a new number can be entered, following the instructions outlined above, for exam-ple starting from 01.

4.4.2 Experiment Number

As soon the F3 (OK ) or F4 (NUL) key is depressed, the second option is high-lighted.

The experiment number, from 1 to 9, can now be selected via the F1 (UP ) or F2 (DWN) keys and confirmed via the F3 (OK ) key or avoided by the F4 (NUL) key.

4.4.3 Animal Gender

After the experiment number, it is possible to define the gender of the animal which has to be processed.

Select it by depressing the F1 (UP) or F2 (DWN) keys and confirm it via the F3 (OK) key.

The user can avoid to select the sex by de-pressing the F4 (NUL) key.

5 WORKING WITH MINI PRINTER AND/OR PC

5.1 How to Set the Data Output Path

The experimental data are saved in the 35100 internal memory. During the experimental trial, the data can also be printed-out in real time via the optional 7145 Thermal Mini-Printer or routed to the PC for real-time or remote communication.

The select operation in conjunction with the Mini-Printer or with the PC, enter the menu of the data output path.

From the main menu, depress F2 (FNC) key, followed by the F1 (OUT) key and again F1 (PAT) key; the display will show whether the connection to the printer, serial or USB port is activated or not

It is understood that the above connections require the appropriate connection cables

Select now the F1 (PRN) key to print the data in real time on the optional 7145 Thermal MiniPrinter (see paragraph 2.1)

The connection cable 35100 to 7145 is supplied with the MiniPrinter.

If the caption “YES1” appears near the word PRINTER, it means the data will be printed on a single string.

“YES2” means that the data will be printed on more lines and larger types.

By depressing again F1 (PRN), the printer is disabled.

The F2 (SER) key allows direct connection to the PC via serial cable provided with the standard package for exporting the experimental data in real time or in remote conditions.

Once correctly connected to the 35100 COM1, the PC must be provided with a running CUB (or Win-DAS) Software.

The correct connection is confirmed by the message “CONNECTED TO THE PC” ap-pearing on the display.

To modify the factory set baud-rate, depress the F2 (B-R) key.

Select by the up/down keys the desired value in the loop which includes 300 - 600 - 1200 - 2400 – 4800 – 9600 Bps. Then de-press the F4 (ESC) key.

The baud-rate must be identical to the value set on the CUB or Win-DAS software (see 52050 or 52010 manuals).

The F3 (USB) key allows activation of the USB SLAVE e USB MASTER, for exporting the experimental data respectively to the PC USB port and to the Memory Key, in real time or in remote conditions.

Connect the 35100 USB connector to the PC USB port via the suitable cable provided with the standard package. The connection is confirmed by the word “YES” appearing near the caption “USB SLAVE”.

Insert a Memory Key (Cat. No. E-AU 041) in the on the front panel. Depress F3 (USB).

The caption “USB MASTER TEST” ap-pears, followed after a few seconds by the word “YES” and by the caption “USB MAS-TER READY”.

If for any reason the connection has not been successful, for example due to a damaged Memory Key, the caption “USB MASTER NO”

Each time a datum or the content of the in-ternal memory are transferred the captions “USB SLAVE WRITING” or “USB MAS. WRITING” appear briefly.

5.1.1 Instrument Address

The instrument address is a useful information, when more than one instrument is linked to the PC via the Win-DAS Software.

From the main menu, depress the F2 (FNC) key, followed by the F1 (OUT) key and F3 (ADD) key; the display shows:-

The operator can set the address of the Hot/Cold Plate which is routing data to the PC and to the Memory Key. The default address is 01.

The factory set parameters are suitable in most cases; in this case the operator can leave this menu by depressing the F4 (ESC) key.

To modify the address, select the desired address (from 01 to 99) by the up or down keys and then depress the F4 (ESC) key.

5.2 Datum Format

While the data are routed to the PC via the CUB or Win-DAS Data Acquisition Software, they can be monitored on the “ACQUIRED DATA” window.

Each string begins with the address of the instrument to which the print-out refers, see para-graph 5.1.1.

The following is a sample of the datum, as it appears on the PC:-

6 MEMORY MANAGEMENT

Each datum, no matter whether printed or sent to the PC, is saved in the memory which can store about 300 strings, including the datum proper and the date/time indica-tion.

By depressing the F3 (MEM) key from the main menu, the MEMORY Menu can be reached.

The F1 (VW ) key enables the operator to visualize on the display the Data stored in the memory, each datum complete with acquisition Date & Time.

Use the keys F1 (UP) or F2 (DWN) to scan the data; by momentarily depressing the key, the displayed datum will increase (or decrease) of one measurement. Keeping these keys depressed longer will scan the data at higher speed.

As usual the F4 (ESC) recalls the previous menu software or abandons a wrong selec-tion.

From the MEMORY Menu, the F2 (OUT) key enables the researcher to export the data stored in the memory to the PC, to the Memory Key or to print them on the Mini-Printer, see paragraph 5.1.

As usual the F4 (ESC) recalls the previous menu software or abandons a wrong selection.

To interrupt the print-out response of the stored Data, depress the F4 (STP) key for not less than one second.

Before starting a new experimental session, we suggest to check the memory which may contain some data of the previous trial. If it is the case, enter the proper software level and RESET the memory.

6.1 “Memory Full” Message

If the “MEMORY FULL” message appears during acquisition, the operator has three op-tions:-

1) the researcher who is not interested in the data saved in the memory, may simply depress the F3 (RES) key and confirm the reset by answering F3 (YES) to the question “ARE YOU SURE?”, see paragraph 6.3.

2) in case the data stored in the memory are necessary, proceed in order to print and/or send them to PC/Memory Key as previously explained (see paragraph 5.1)

3) there is also the possibility to ignore the indication of “MEMORY FULL” and go on with the experiment by depressing the F4 (ESC) key. The data acquired onwards will not be saved. Consider that, in this case, the memory remains fully loaded and the display reminds it by showing the message “MEMORY FULL” each time the 35100 is switched on.

6.2 Memory Loss!

In the case the caption “MEMORY LOSS!! SET CONFIGURATION” appears on the display, it means that the data saved in the memory are lost.

The operator has to set again date, time (see paragraph 7.1) and the experiment configuration including sequence number, etc., see paragraph 4.4.

NOTE : To avoid the loss of relevant data, we suggest to save them on the PC or to print them before exiting any experimental session.

6.3 Memory Reset

From the Memory menu, the F3 key (RES) enables the operator to reset the data stored in the memory.

This command can be useful, for instance, before starting a new experimental session, if the operator prefers to cancel the data saved during previous experiments.

To avoid the accidental loss of all stored data, the operator is now required to an-swer (YES) (F3 key) or (NO) (F4 key) to the question:

“ARE YOU SURE?”

The Memory menu automatically appears also when the memory is fully loaded, which means it has reached its maximum capability of about 300 lines.

7 MISCELLANEOUS

7.1 Setting Time & Date

To set time and date, from the Main menu depress the F2 (FNC) key, followed again by the F2 (CLK) key.

Use the F3 ( > ) horizontal arrow key to highlight, on the intermediate level of the display, the information which has to be modified, year, month, day, hours, minutes, seconds or mode.

Set the correct value by the F1 (UP) or F2 (DWN) keys.

A momentary action on the keys will increase or decrease the numerical value of one step: depress the keys longer for higher speed selection.

Don’t forget to set also the clock mode, selecting among the following standards:-

24-hour mode 12-hour mode with: - anti-meridian (a.m.) time - post-meridian (p.m.) time

Enter also the day of the week, making reference to the following table:-

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday

then depress the F4 (ENT) key to confirm the selection.

7.2 Display Contrast

To modify the display contrast, depress the F2 (FNC) key from the Main Menu, then the F3 (DIS) key.

The display shows:

Keep the keys F1 (UP ) or F2 (DWN) de-pressed until you reach the desired display contrast.

The readability of the liquid crystal display depends on the angle of view: select the ideal contrast according to the height of the table, the operator’s distance and so on.

Find the ideal readability; please note that the display brightness can slightly vary with use, due to the instrument temperature; if necessary, retouch it.

Leave this software level, saving the selected display contrast, by depressing the F4 (ESC) key.

7.3 Battery Low!

When the caption “BATTERY LOW!! CHANGE SNAPHAT!!” appears on the dis-play, it means that the internal batteries which maintain the memory, are down and consequently have to be replaced.

N O T E :

when the caption “MEMORY LOSS!!” appears, the internal memory is lost. The loss of relevant data can be avoided by saving data before exiting any experimental ses-sion.

To replace the batteries see paragraph 8.4-Battery Replacement.

8 CALIBRATION

Each Hot/Cold Plate is factory calibrated to ensure stable and precise temperatures and years of trouble-free operation.

In the case re-calibration is necessary, a remote occurrence indeed, it can be done via the dedicated software menu. However sophisticated procedures and dedicated instruments are necessary to test precisely the temperature on the whole plate surface.

In this case, we suggest to contact our after sales department, see paragraph 9.6 for assis-tance or to send the instrument to our laboratory for calibration.

9 MAINTENANCE

While any service of the instrument is to be carried out by Ugo Basile personnel or by quali-fied personnel, authorized by UGO BASILE organization, this section of the instruction manuals describes normal maintenance procedures which can be carried out at the cus-tomer’s facilities.

UNPLUG THE MAINS CORD BEFORE CARRYING OUT ANY MAINTENANCE JOB!

9.1 Electrical

The Wiring Diagrams illustrate the simple circuit of the 35100 controller.

To inspect and/or replace the fuses, disconnect the mains cable first! Insert a miniature screwdriver in the slot indentation, see paragraph 3.4.2, and snap out the slide which houses the fuses.

The fuses must be 5A fast-blow fuses (type F5A/250V 6x30mm).

Snap in the fuse slide: the mechanical “click” ensures that it is locked.

9.2 Basic Unit

The 35100 plate is very resistant to watery solution splashes and is not corroded by rodent urine.

Don’t use organic solvents for cleaning: they may spoil the moulded cabinet shells. A mois-tened cloth is adequate for dusting and removing the animals’ droppings.

9.3 Perspex Restrainers

Organic solvents should not be used for cleaning the two Perspex restraining cylinders as they may “craze” the acrylic material.

This means to originate a network of superficial cracks, due to the release of internal stress, which will not degrade the mechanical sturdiness of the cylinders, but will definitely spoil the neat look of the tubes and decrease their transparency, hence impairing the animal obser-vation.

9.4 Battery Replacement

The Hot/Cold plate memory is supported by a battery snaphat type M4T32-BRI2SH1 of ST. The rated battery endurance is 10 years, therefore replacing the batteries is not a frequent task.

To replace batteries, first of allswitch off the unit and disconnect the mains cable.

When the batteries are down, the display shows the caption “MEMORY LOSS!!”, see paragraph 7.3-Battery Low!

N O T E : when the caption “MEMORY LOSS!!” appears, the internal memory is lost. The loss of relevant data can be avoided by saving data before exit-ing any experimental session.

Always use the same type of batteries for replacement, our part number E-US 063-1 see paragraph 10-ORDERING INFORMATION.

The batteries are located on the PCB of the instrument, see its electronic component list, in the section Wiring Diagrams. Take off the bottom panel of the Hot/Cold Plate by removing its four screws.

You will notice a mini PCB, assembled on a larger one. On the mini-board there is a small box, marked U3. This 4-pin box contains the batteries and the clock quartz.

Extract it with care, by lifting its longer sides with the help of a miniature screwdriver or a tip of a pencil.

Insert the fresh snaphat paying attention to the orientation of its white dot which should match the dot on the PCB. A “click” assures you that a proper insertion took place.

Reassemble the bottom panel.

At this point, set again date and time, see paragraph 7.1 and set the configuration, see paragraph 0.

9.5 Long Inactivity

The instrument does not require any particular maintenance after long inactivity.
