ABSTRACT
Title : The Effectiveness of Using Numbered Head Together to Improve Students’ Reading Ability in Descriptive Text at Eight Graders of MTs NU20 Kangkung in Academic year of 2011/2012
Writer : Mustaqimatur RohmahStudent Number : 073411016
The statements of the problem of this thesis are; (1) is the use of Numbered Head Together effective to improve students’ reading ability in descriptive text at eighth grade students of MTs NU 20 Kangkung Kendal in academic year 2011/2012? (2) what extent is the use of Numbered Head Together to improve students’ reading ability in descriptive text at eighth grade students of MTs NU 20 Kangkung Kendal in academic year 2011/2012 effective?. The objective of this thesis are to identify whether the use of Numbered Head Together to improve students’ reading ability in descriptive text at eighth grade students of MTs NU 20 Kangkung Kendal in academic year 2011/2012 effective or not, and to identify the extent of the use of Numbered Head Together to improve students’ reading ability in descriptive text at eighth grade students of MTs NU 20 Kangkung Kendal in academic year 2011/2012effectiveness.
The population of this research was the eighth grade students of MTs NU 20 Kangkung. The research methodology was an experimental research, which conducted in two classes; the experimental group (VIII A) and control group (VIII C) was. The VIIIA was taught by using Numbered Head Together, while the VIII C was taught without Numbered Head Together (using conventional way). The writer gave writing test to gather the data. The test had been tried out to find out the validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discriminating power before it was used to gather the data. The formula that was used to analyze the data was t-test. It was used to determine whether there was a significance difference between students’ score in experimental group and students’ score in control group.
After the data has been collected and analyzed, it was revealed that the average or the mean score of the students taught using Numbered Head Together 79.64 and regarded as highest category. The average or the mean score of the students taught without using Numbered Head Together 70.44. There was significant difference since the result that the value of to is 3.748. It was consulted with t table on significant level 5% = 1.67. It meant the value of to > tt or 3.748 > 1.67. It meant that Ha was accepted while Ho was rejected. Since t-test score was higher than the t-table, Numbered Head Together was effective method in improving students’ descriptive reading in MTs NU 20 Kangkung. Based on the finding, the writer assumed that Numbered Head Together can be used as one of alternative method in the teaching of descriptive reading.
