What am I going to do?Study AbroadEnroll in classes that complement your major or minor coursework at UK, or explore a new discipline. Depending on the program, you'll earn academic credit through a foreign institution or through UK.

Research AbroadConduct international research independently, through a U.S. organization specializing in fieldwork placements or alongside faculty members from UK. Depending on the program, you’ll earn academic credit through a foreign institution or through UK. Research credit may also be awarded through your home department.

Intern AbroadGain work experience in a professional setting based upon your interests and background. Depending on the program, you’ll earn credit through the host institution or through UK. Internship credit is typically awarded by your home department or the UK Stuckert Career Center.

Teach AbroadAre you an education student? Complete your student teaching requirements at an international elementary, middle or secondary school. Academic credit will be earned via the UK College of Education. Are you a non-education major? You can also teach abroad through specialized educational placements.

Service AbroadEngage with a host community by completing an international service-learning project. Depending on the program, you’ll earn credit through the host institution or the UK Stuckert Career Center.

How do I search for programs? To explore your options, visit uky.edu/educationabroad and click the blue banner at the top right corner of the screen. You can browse programs using a variety of parameters including term, course offerings, country and/or the experience types listed above. For the best results, do not use more than two or three search parameters at a time.

When searching, you should also browse your major advising page. Based upon your major(s) and/or minor, you can see a short-list of programs that your department has given a “seal of approval.” While you’re not limited to the programs on these lists, they’re a good place to start your search. Visit uky.edu/international/MAPs to find your major advising page. To find more information on the programs listed, use the search function mentioned above.

"My ideal program has

a lot of structure and

some of the comforts

of home."

UK Consortia Programs

• Directed by faculty from the region• Earn transfer credit • Peers are other college students

from the region• Variety of academic offerings• Mostly summer/winter programs

Transfer credit is generally pre-determined (i.e. saves you

one step in the academic equivalency process)

“I chose a UK Sponsored program because I wanted a program with structure. I’d never traveled before, and it helped me feel more comfortable abroad on my own.” - Sarah

“My consortia program was perfect for me because I experienced Spain with other students from the Kentucky area, and the program offered credit that I couldn’t find with UK Sponsored programs.” - Willow

pg.6

UK Partner Programs

• Programs arranged by third party organizations

• Earn transfer credit• Variety of academic offerings• Excursions and on-site services

included in program fee• Programs in all academic terms

• Earn transfer credit• Highly independent experience • Peers are international students

and host country students• Take courses in English or host

language• Semester programs (fall/spring/

“I chose a UK Partner Program because I wanted the comfort of knowing someone was always right there for me, but,at the same time, I didn’t want to feel like someone was holding my hand all the time.” - Erin

“I really wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone so I

chose an exchange program. Improving my Spanish was also

really important to me, and my program forced me to use it.”

- Josh

While each education abroad program is unique, these descriptions are meant to help you understand program differences in general. It's important to review individual program descriptions to fully understand what your experience may look like in the host country.

COST CONSIDERATIONSLOCATIONYou should consider the daily costs of living and the exchange rate of the host country. Even in countries with high costs of living, you might be surprised to find differences between large cities and small towns.

If low costs are important to you, consider participating on a programs in non-traditional locations. Since most students participate on program in Western Europe or Australia, if you participate on a program in Argentina, Thailand or South Africa (for example), you’re more likely to be noticed in scholarship committee reviews. Therefore, you’re more likely to receive additional funds.

DURATIONWhile the “sticker price” of a shorter term program (during the summer or winter) may be lower than a longer term program (during the fall or spring semester), you should consider weekly or daily costs of a program. Often times the costs per week are less on semester or academic year programs. Also, costs such as the airline ticket are not likely to vary with the length of stay. Something else to consider with duration is scholarships and financial aid. If you only receive aid during the fall and spring semesters, you may want to participate on a program during a term when you receive funds. In other words, if youparticipate on a winter or summer program, you may not have normal financial aid to apply towards program costs.

-DON'T 4GET-In addition to comparing program costs, you'll want to consider the possible educationabroad scholarships associated with each program - see page 14

Earning Transfer Credit

FOLLOW THESE STEPS NOW, YAH HEAR?!1. Choose your program2. Collect course descriptions from the host organization or institution's website ^3. Print out the UK Education Abroad Academic Approval Form at www.uky.edu/international/academic_credit4. With course descriptions handy, email and/or set up an appointment with the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the department(s) where the courses would be "housed" if they were taught at UK 5. As a final sign-off, get your academic advisor to sign the back of your form6. Turn your form into 315 Bradley Hall

Once you’ve decided to participate on a Consortia, Partner, Exchange or Direct program, you will need to complete an academic approval form (AAF). This form will let you know how the credit

you earn abroad will be applied toward degree requirements. Follow the steps below to complete the form.

To help you understand the process, the image at the bottom of the page is an example of an AAF in which a student earned Kinesology and Spanish transfer credit abroad.

Once UK Education Abroad receives your foreign transcript (with the approved coursework you submitted on your AAF), the credits/hours will appear on your transcript. BOOM!

( )i.e. partner organization or exchange school

pg.11

* In some cases, you may need to complete this form upon return. For certain credits, academic departments prefer to see your completed coursework from abroad.

Current Financial Aid/Scholarships

Using Regular Financial Aid & Scholarships

Generally, you can apply your current financial aid and scholarships to an education abroad program. However, since each scholarship is unique and rules may change year to year, you must contact your financial aid counselor, or the

academic scholarship office, to ensure your aid can be applied toward your program.

Your assigned financial aid counselor is determined by the first letters of your last name. Visit www.uky.edu/financialaid to find your counselor’s contact information or stop by room 127 of Funkhouser.

For academic scholarship information, visit room 128 of Funkhouser.

Before contacting your financial aid counselor, be sure to review your current aid under the “Financials” tab in your myUK portal. This way, you save time when contacting your counselor

by asking questions specific to your scholarships (see below).

Dear (counselor's name),I am looking to study abroad this coming fall/spring. Can my current William C. Parker Scholarship and KEES money be applied toward my program costs? Sincerely, Joe Smith(Student I.D. #)

ISP 599:Study Abroad Course

If you are participating in an education abroad program, you will be automatically enrolled in ISP 599, a one-credit hour pass/fail course. This course is unique because it holds you in full-time status during your time abroad,

therefore usually allowing you to use normal scholarship and financial aid (as mentioned above). Unless you’re participating on an exchange program (where you’d pay normal UK tuition in order to study abroad), this single hour of

tuition is the only tuition that you will pay the University. NOTE: a program fee is not the same thing as tuition.

In order to pass the ISP 599 course, you must attend meetings with other education abroad students, and complete reflection essays while abroad. A few months before your departure, you will receive an email from UK

Education Abroad with meeting times and dates. Visit www.uky.edu/international/ISP599 for more information.

You may also consider adjusting

for your term abroad. This may

Education AbroadScholarshipsIn addition to using regular scholarships or financial aid, you may also receive funds from education abroad scholarships. Depending on the scholarship, award criteria can be based upon ethnic background, financial need, merit, destination, area or study, a specific program or other principles. It’s important to know that most education abroad scholarships require an active education abroad program application to be considered for the award. In other words, you must prove intent to participate while applying to the scholarships.

{fund-raising ideas

Websites such as PayPal, gofundme.com or fundmytravel.com offer a great way to start an online fundraising campaign. Fees might be included.

Contact clubs, organizations and churches in your hometown. In exchange for a donation, offer to do a presentation upon your return.

Newspapers or radio stations in your hometown may be willing to contribute if you offer to write articles or do podcasts while abroad.

Pick up people’s unwanted clothes, furniture and knickknacks, and organize a yard sale. One person’s trash is another person’s ticket abroad.

In exchange for heavy promotion and new customers, a local business may be willing to donate a percentage of a given day’s sales.

more ideas:• Sell a custom calendar with

pictures from your time abroad (pre-ordered & created upon your return).

• Raffle the chance to win a date with one of your friends or a local celebrity

• With the help of family & friends, organize a dinner or party & ask attendees for donations.

• Offer to take pictures abroad with a business’s logo or merchan-dise that they could use in future advertising

• Create a fun campaign where once you’ve raised X amount of money, you’ll shave your head or donate your hair to Locks of Love (or, even better, get some-one else to do it).

* friendly advice...

hedge your bets! While it’s important to apply for as many education abroad scholarships as possible, you shouldn’t expect to receive every award. It’s important to consider other funding options & remember that every little bit helps. Small amounts can add up to big rewards!

From your mom’s co-workers to your uncle’s golf buddies...Use your network and others’!

How will you give back? Writing a blog & sending updates from abroad is just one great way to keep contributors engaged.

People don’t want to donate to a vacation. Make sure you always tell folks how this experience will help you academically & professionally.

Be creative with your fundraising by incor-porating your host location. (Is there a local organization with a connection to your host country?)

Always look for ways to save your own money. Keep your wish list for your birthday or holidays in mind too.

sample letter (for family/friends)

Dear Uncle Phil,

As you know, for the past few years I have been studying

Psychology and Spanish at the University of Kentucky. During

this time, I have been able to broaden my horizons through a

variety of classes & gain experience through lab research in

my field. I am working hard to make sure that my education

and activities prepare me for graduate school & the job market.

In my preparation, I have decided to enroll in an intensive

Spanish language study abroad program in Argentina this fall.

Not only will this program give me real-world Spanish language

experience, I will even be able to earn credit towards my

psychology degree. Psychology courses, in Spanish, will allow me

to explore my field in a new context, from a fresh perspective.

Because only 14% of U.S. college students study abroad, I

know this experience will serve me well into the future by

setting me apart from my peers.

The total cost of this program, including my airline ticket and

other expenses, comes to about $11,000. While I am able to

use some of my normal financial aid, apply for education

abroad scholarships, and tap in to my savings, I will still

come up short.

If you could contribute, any amount would be greatly

appreciated. And to let you know your money is going to good

use, I will happily send you blog updates while abroad!

Thanks so much for supporting my current (and future) goals!

Love, John

PARAGRAPH 1Give a short update on what’s happening in your life: your goals, activities, etc.

PARAGRAPH 2 / 3Connect your goals/activities with your reason for doing an education abroad program. Describe what your program will entail.

PARAGRAPH 4Explain your expenses and financial situation. You may even consider breaking down costs and current funds. When it comes to money, people often appreciate transparency.

PARAGRAPH 5Ask for help, but don’t forget to say what you’ll do in return!

To make giving easier for contributors (and increase your chances of receiving funds), you may want to consider including a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your letter.

Including a fun note with options for contributing not only gives your family

and friends choices, but it makes asking for money a little less tense.

Last month’s electric bill was killer, but I support you!

I expect a cool tchotchke when you get back. Rock it out!
