Danger!

Ours is a highly competitive sector, where companies are under constant commercial pressure to work more efficiently, to provide higher quality services and to continually offer additional services to compete effectively.

This work pressure can often be the result of many commercial pressures, such as, 'just in time' management or the very real pressure from customers to deliver the concrete just when they need it and at the right price.

Sadly, driving while under pressure can lead to serious accidents involving mixers (85% of accidents occur en route to site), due to the reduced braking capabilities and evasive capabilities, size, weight, drum speed, etc.

When all this is considered, driver mistakes can be the most serious - the three biggest causes of rollovers are, SPEEDING, INEXPERIENCE and COMPLACENCY.

Other main causes include UNSAFE DRIVING, STRESS and FATIGUE. So, what can we do?

Our Readymix Concrete Industry urgently needs driver training to be adapted to the rapidly changing working conditions and the desperate need for continuous training.

Training and Education

The biggest single issue in the industry today is the lack of recognised, approved driver training regarding the performing of all their daily tasks.

Mixers are the most unique vehicle on any road, so mixer drivers need to have specialised and specific, competency training - this should include vehicle handling, loading and unloading, site safety, etc.

Suitable training for mixer drivers, as part of a broader Risk Management System, will play a VERY BIG part in reducing accidents. There needs to be effective management of the safety culture to allow drivers to develop the competencies required

to do their job 'well' and to develop the appropriate personal attributes for safe driving.

Our approach to 'training and education' includes:

Driver's attitudes and driving competenciesDriver assessmentTailored driver trainingSituational awarenessPsychometric profiling

Occupational Road Risk Strategy -

Managing and Promoting a Safety Culture

REMEMBER, being on the road is NOT a controlled working environment! Consequently, we all need to be involved with managing 'road risk'. We need to develop a safety culture by examining all aspects of our training, procedures, incident

management and communications and by eliminating poor work planning. We need to promote safer and more defensive driving schemes, introduce driver safety policies and develop an appropriate

work culture that allows drivers to feel comfortable and encouraged to obey speed limits and road traffic legislation. We need to look at a driver's attitude and mindset that lead to appreciably safer driving and significant improvements in

road safety involving mixers. Provide training and instruction regarding their driving skills, vehicle-manoeuvring, familiarisation with the mixer, fitness to drive and appropriate behaviours. We need to identify and manage risks!

Critically important lessons can be learnt from shared experiences that lead to safer driving and significant improvements in road safety involving mixers.

"U.K. Truckmixer Training Limited offer a bespoke consultancy service to Ready-Mix companies, both large and small, in the UK and overseas. This ranges from the development of specific policies [e.g. Road Risk Policy] to our very popular 2-3 day
