Henry II• Henry II became king of
England in 1154.• Henry II he ruled as King of
England and, at various times, controlled parts of Wales, Scotland and western France. Henry, the great-grandson of William the Conqueror, was the first of the House of Plantagenet to rule England. Henry was the first to use the title <<King of England>>.
Canterbury Cathedral
• In this year Canterbury Cathedral was the most powerful religious centre in the country.
Thomas Becket
• One archbishop recommended Thomas to the king.
• He was tall and thin, with dark hair and a pale face, with an extraordinary memory.
They became very good friends
• In a short time they became inseparable.• Thomas, older than king with 15 years
may have felt as an elder-brother.
Becket helped king
• He helped king in state affairs.• And in his private life.
King made Thomas Chancellor
• Thomas became Chancellor of England.
• Than he became Archbishop.
Thomas became rich
• He became as rich as the king if not richer.
Henry II wanted to control the church with Becket
• Becket wanted to protect the rights of the church.
• Their relationship became antagonistic.
Misinterpreted words
• << Will none of this idle people who eat my bread rid me of this trouble-some priest >>
• Some of knights misinterpreted those violent words.
Thomas died
• On 29th of December those knights cut down Becket with their swords right on steps of the altar.
Many peoples started to visit Thomas tomb.
• King came to Thomas tomb too.
• And Canterbury Cathedral has become a place of pilgrimage for sick people.
