About UKCCSRC PACT • Pilot-scale Advanced Capture Technology facilities

– Funded by: DECC and EPSRC – Partners: Cranfield, Edinburgh, Imperial, Leeds, Nottingham,

Sheffield – Part of: UK Carbon Capture & Storage Research Centre (UKCCSRC)

• Scope: Specialist national facilities for research in advanced fossil-fuel energy, bioenergy and carbon capture technologies – Comprehensive range of pilot-scale facilities – Supporting specialist research and analytical facilities – Leading academic expertise

• Aim: Support and catalyse industrial and academic R&D to accelerate the development and commercialisation of novel low carbon technologies

• Objectives – Bridge gap between bench-scale R&D and industrial pilot trials – Provide shared access to industry and academia

Operational stats

• Design & Installation from March 2012; operating since August 2013

• Officially opened in June 2014 by the Rt Hon Michael Fallon MP, DECC Minister of State for Energy

• ~800 visitors from over 256 organisations including over 65 academic and over 200 industrial and other organisations

• 707 test days allocated to end of financial year 2016/17; over 150% utilised.

• 16 R&D projects and 2 doctoral training centres with total value of over £34m and PACT income of over £2.4m.

Core facility overview • Setup costs

– Total setup cost £6.3m – 3.0m total funding from DECC – 3.3m total contribution from Institutions and research groups

• Operational income – To date £2.4m of operational income till 2017-2018 – Involved in £32m of research and training activity – 16 project with total value of £24m and income to PACT of £2.1m – 2 DTC with total value of £8m with £300k income to PACT

• Utilisation: – To date 700 days allocated to current/committed projects till 2018 – Nearly 40% utilised with utilisation rate at 170% of planned

• Visits/ presentations – 756 visitors to the facility from 256 organisations including 65

academic and over 200 industrial and other organisations – Around 30 national/international presentations on PACT to a total

estimated audience of 1100

• Advanced Capture Testing in a Transportable Remotely-Operated Mini-lab (ACCTROM)

• Integrated carbon capture media testing laboratory

• Facility is transported to the test site and connected to directly to onsite flue gasses for testing

• Long-term on-site testing of CO2 capture media on real flue gases specific to a given process under a range of temperature and flue gas environments with a possibility of multiple parallel tests

ACTTROM: System Description

Self-contained, standard chemical storage unit Capacity: 25-50 m3 of flue gas per day Meets DSEAR and COSHH regulations. Deployed and hosted on industrial site; host

provide: flat site, supply of flue gas, electricity and internet connection.

What’s in the “Box”?

A number of small‐scale units for carbon capture media testing; operated in parallel

Accelerated degradation testing units to examine system characteristics on exposure to real flue gases

Modular units for flue gas conditioning Hot and cold water supplies for test rig

temperature control. Remote access control and data logging

unit with video stream through a wireless internet link, allowing scientists anywhere in the country to monitor and control their experiments.

Cranfield PACT Facilities

UK’s largest Circulating Fluidized Bed test facilities, operated flexibly in combustion gasification oxy-fuel-fired mode, with full exhaust gas

recycle (EGR), with both dry and wet flue gas. Sampling/feed ports permitting full solid, liquid and

gas sampling with conditioning units Probing for in situ temperature, pressure and gas

concentration measurements Automated, gas supply and mixing system. Hot and cold gas cleaning Gas leak safety detection system Fuel feed metering system, advanced flow meters continuous ash removal system.

Largest such pilot unit in the UK, flexibility operated as

dual fluidized bed system, circulating solids between the bed riser and a downcomer,

single entrained flow riser with a two bubbling beds Equipped with sampling/feed ports, thermocouples,

pressure probes and advanced flow meters Hot viewing windows at several locations for flow

characteristics and particle transfer research Fully automated gas supply and mixing system Advanced bag house filters Extensive range of gas analysers with gas conditioning unit Applications:

Analytical Facility in CCS and Unconventional Gas • GC-MS, LC-MS and ion chromatography to or

the characterisation of post combustion capture capture solvents

• A range of thermal analysis equipment, including DSC, TGA coupled to GC-MS and high pressure TGA for investigating fundamentals of DE volatilisation and combustion

The National Corporate Energy Lab: UKCCSRC-PACT (Energy 2050)

National “Corporate Lab” facility based at AMP (Factory 2050) that will combine conventional, nuclear and unconventional power generation research together with advanced materials, working closely with industry and governments to support both prototype and production opportunities.
