UKIRK UPDATE May 2017 UKirk Ministry at Virginia Tech The 19 th Annual Chili Cook-off The 19th Annual Chili Cook-Off supporting UKirk Ministry at Virginia Tech was a huge suc- cess! About 80 folks gathered to enjoy delicious chili, great company, and a raucous trivia game. Congrats to the winners - Winnie Meyers won "Honorable Mention", Mary Lee Hendricks won "Spiciest", Meg Laing won "Most Original" and a group effort of Roanoke Valley Presby- terian Church won "Champion." The evening raised $700 to benefit UKirk's upcoming service trip with The Pilgrimage at The Church of the Pilgrim in Washington DC. A big thanks to all for your support! The chili cook off was a lot of fun!! Our congregation is super excited that our entry won "Chili Cham- pion"!! The story behind the chili is a great example of how the folks in the valley work together. My Son Collin Holley is in the ninth grade at BHS. He is starting to show some interest in cooking. He announced to the church congregation that we would like to make a pot of chili to enter on behalf of Roanoke Valley Presbyterian Church. He asked if anyone would supply him with a recipe and if anyone would be willing to donate the ingredients. Church member, Janet Hancock, gave us the recipe and she also donated a big jar of home grown tomatoes that her husband, David Hancock grew and she caned this summer to get us started. Another member, Warren Neily, suggested that we put wild veni- son in the chili to make it different. Of Course he was happy to donated some "local grass feed wild ground venison" from his successful hunting season. Every Sunday folks would come up to Collin and ask what could they donate. Collin eagerly told folks what he needed. Peter Clouse donated ground beef from his personal livestock raised here in the valley. Judy Sparks from, Sparks Family Farm of Stuart VA, donated locally raised hot pork sausage. Regina Smith donated hot peppers that she raised and dried this summer. Pastor Terry Blevins and Judy Neily donated dark and light kidney beans. Amy Ellison donated onions. Lorain Baker donated tomato paste. Dianne Tony donated fresh green peppers and her famous "Broccoli Cornbread" Saturday afternoon Collin put all of the ingredients and a little bit of every spice in our cabinet into a slow cooker. He attentively babysat the pot constantly stirring it for 7 hours. Sunday morning Collin got the cooled pot of chili out of the refrigerator for an official taste test. His comment was "it is good but it still needs some tweaking." When we got home from church he added a few things to make it a little bit spicier. Continued on page 2

The chili cook off was a lot of fun!! Our congregation is super excited that our entry won "Chili Cham-pion"!! The story behind the chili is a great example of how the folks in the valley work together.

My Son Collin Holley is in the ninth grade at BHS. He is starting to show some interest in cooking. He

announced to the church congregation that we would like to make a pot of chili to enter on behalf of Roanoke Valley Presbyterian Church. He asked if anyone would supply him with a recipe and if anyone would be willing to donate the ingredients. Church member, Janet Hancock, gave us the recipe and she also donated a big jar of home grown tomatoes that her husband, David Hancock grew and she caned this summer to get us started. Another member, Warren Neily, suggested that we put wild veni-son in the chili to make it different. Of Course he was happy to donated some "local grass feed wild

ground venison" from his successful hunting season. Every Sunday folks would come up to Collin and

ask what could they donate. Collin eagerly told folks what he needed. Peter Clouse donated ground beef from his personal livestock raised here in the valley. Judy Sparks from, Sparks Family Farm of Stuart VA, donated locally raised hot pork sausage. Regina Smith donated hot peppers that she raised and dried this summer. Pastor Terry Blevins and Judy Neily donated dark and light kidney beans. Amy Ellison donated onions. Lorain Baker donated tomato paste. Dianne Tony donated fresh green peppers

and her famous "Broccoli Cornbread" Saturday afternoon Collin put all of the ingredients and a little bit of every spice in our cabinet into a slow cooker.

Collin truly babysat that pot of chili from start to its final destination "The 19th Annual Cooper House Chili

Cook Off." He was so proud when they announced it chili champion and gladly posed for the picture at the end of the event. It was truly a good time for everyone!!

Shrove Tuesday Pancake dinner at the Campbell's

UKirk students returned to campus for the spring semester excited and inspired by what they had experienced at the Montreat College Conference in January. They were full of new ideas for our ministry ready to explore how we, as Christians, are called to act against racism and other social injustices in our world. In response, we did sev-eral things as a faith community. We had a 4 week small group book study of Waking Up White by Debbie Irving, us-ing the guide published by the PC(USA). We hosted students from the Muslim Student Association for dinner and dialogue. We served a local organization providing housing and meals to people experiencing homelessness. Each of these experiences invited students to learn and grow in their understanding of themselves and in their identity as followers of Christ. Other activities this semester included leading worship at Roanoke Valley Presbyterian Church, participating in the campus-wide service day called The Big Event, and retreating together for a weekend at Camp Alta Mons. No matter where UKirk students find themselves, they bear the light of Christ, and remind us all that we do, too.

UKirk Internships

Rachel Sutphin is a rising junior from Christiansburg, Virginia major-ing in Religious Studies. Over the past school year she served as a student intern at Northside Presbyterian Church and her responsi-bilities included teaching Sunday School, co- leading the Confirma-tion class, pastoral care, weekly worship leadership, and preaching three different times. Rachel says that she is “extremely grateful for this wonderful opportunity as I explored ordained ministry as a part of my own call.”

Ginny Pearson is a rising senior from Standardsville, Virginia majoring in Human Development. She will serve as a student intern at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church this summer and into the fall semester. The focus of Ginny's internship will be leadership and ministry development as she participates in and experiences the day to day life of ministry on staff. She will be assisting in the development of a Wednesday night kids program and providing support for the technology driven communica-tion outlets. She will also be taking on a leadership development cur-riculum being over seen by Kendra Crabtree, Director of Communica-tion and Church Life.
