REFLECTION OF THE WEEK Sermon Sunday of All Saints

"Who ever shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father who is in heaven"

On the Sunday after Pentecost, we remember all the saints, and we are inspired by these two readings. In words of St Paul, "Wherefore seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily overcomes us. Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith, Who, for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame and hath sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."

This should be the motto for all Christians. And the saints are all described at the end of the Gospel reading. “But many that are first shall be last, and the last shall be first." This describes in microcosm the life that pleases God, the life that we are called to. We are to forsake that which weighs us down. Now this is the Sunday after Pentecost. Today we are told what helps us all become saints. St. Paul says through faith people did this, through faith people did that. This is a lesson for today as well for with faith we can move mountains. Last Sunday 23rd June Perth parish of St John the Baptist had a double celebration. Pentecost and Bishop Peter Stasiuk and Fr Brian Kelty were here to ordain to Sub Deacon Richard Charlwood. The ordination took place before Holy Liturgy and then a celebration lunch was held in the church hall afterwards.

Richard—we wish you all the best and God’s blessings in all the work you do for Him.

Here are a FEW photos from that special day.

WHAT HAPPENS IN HEAVEN WHEN WE PRAY? I dreamt that I went to Heaven and an angel was showing me around. We walked side-by-side inside a large workroom filled with angels. My angel guide stopped in front of the first section and said, "This is the Receiving Section. Here, all petitions to God said in prayer are received" I looked around in this area, and it was terribly busy with so many angels sorting out petitions written on volumi-nous paper sheets and scraps from people all over the world. Then we moved on down a long corridor until we reached the second section.. The angel then said to me, "This is the Packaging and Delivery Section. Here, the graces and blessings the people asked for are processed and delivered to the living persons who asked for them." I noticed again how busy it was there. There were many angels working hard at that station, since so many bless-ings had been requested and were being packaged for delivery to Earth. Finally! At the farthest end of the long corridor we stopped at the door of a very small station. To my great surprise, only one angel was seated there, idly doing nothing. "This is the Acknowledgment Section," my angel friend quietly admitted to me. He seemed embarrassed. "How is it that there is no work going on here?" I asked. "So sad," the angel sighed. "After people receive the blessings that they asked for, very few send back acknowledgments." "How does one acknowledge God's blessings?" I asked."Simple," the angel answered. Just say, "Thank you, Lord." "What blessings should they acknowledge?" I asked "If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead, and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of this world. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy." "And if you get this on your own computer, you are part of the 1% in the world who has that opportunity." "If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more blessed than the many who will not even survive this day." "If you have never experienced the fear in battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation, you are ahead of 700 million people in the world." "If you can attend a church without the fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death, you are envied by and more blessed than three billion people in the world." "If your parents are still alive and still married, you are very rare" "If you can hold your head up and smile, you are not the norm. You're unique to all those in doubt and despair." "Okay. What now? How can I start?' If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you as very special, and you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world who cannot read at all. Have a good day. (sent by email) ——————————————————————————————————————————————————————— The God We Recognize by Friar Jim Van Vurst, O.F.M. (American Catholic.org) Every once in a while (quite often, actually) there is a single word used in the Gospel that helps us understand our lives. One such word occurs in Mark's Gospel regarding one of the towns along the shores of Lake Gennesaret, also called the Sea of Galilee. We hear some of those towns named Capernaum, Bethsaida, Magdala (where Mary Magdalene was from), and Tiberias. Capernaum was Jesus’ headquar-ters—a place he left a number of times for his preaching and healing ministry. Mark 6:53-56 says that when Jesus got out of the boat, “people immediately recognized him. They scurried around about the surrounding country and began to bring in the sick. . . .” It is the word recognized to which I am referring. And once they know it is Jesus, the Gospel uses the word scurried to describe people’s response. No question, Jesus had been there before. 'To Know Again' When we recognize somebody, whether friend or enemy, our feelings are touched in some way. The more important such a person is to us, the deeper and more powerful those feelings are. Remember when you were in love and you saw your fiancé coming to you after he or she had been away for some time? Did your heart not skip a beat or two? There is a most powerful moment when Jesus’ disciples recognized him. It’s when the two disciples were walking to Emmaus after Jesus’ death. They were almost hopeless. Then Jesus met them, talked with them, and broke bread with them. With that, they recognized him and said, “Were not our hearts burning [within us] when he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?” (Lk 24:32). That must have been the most wonderful moment in their lives. Love without Barriers I have something truly wonderful to tell you, my readers. We will have a moment when we have completed our journey on earth and, in the twinkling of an eye, enter the realm of eternity. Something indescribable will occur. First, of course, we will see God. But we will also be greeted by and reunited with all our loved ones who went before us. Imagine the reunion with parents and children, mother and father, husband and wife, brother and sister. Talk about “recognizing” our loved ones! Some might wonder whether we will recognize one another. Won’t things be different? Won’t everyone look different? Oh, there will be a difference, but it will be only a positive one. Why? Because healing takes place when we enter into eternity and see God face-to-face. If we think we loved each other while on earth together, there are no words to describe the perfect love we will have for one another because of seeing God and realizing we will be together with him and each other for eternity. It’s love without any barriers. As St. Paul expressed it: “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him” (I Cor 2:9).

His Beatitude Sviatoslav: “The Holy Spirit stays very close to each believing person” 26.06.13 This was emphasized by His Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk) , UGCC Head, during the Divine Liturgy celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Sambir-Drohobych Eparchy and the 1025th anni-versary of the Baptism of Ukraine – Rus, on the Feast of the Holy Spirit in Drohobych in the courtyard of the Holy Trinity Cathedral. Concelebrants with His Beatitude Sviatoslav during the Divine Liturgy were: Thomas Edward Hallikson, Apostolic Nuncio; Bishop Yaroslav (Pryriz), Sambir-Drohobych Eparch; BishopIhor (Vozniak), Lviv Metropolitan; Bishop Volodymyr Viytyshyn; Ivano-Frankivsk Metropolitan, Bishop Vasyliy (Semeniuk); Ternopil-Zboriv Metropolitan, Bishop Bohdan (Dziurakh), secretary of UGCC Synod of Bishops; Bishop Joseph (Milan), Auxiliary Bishop of the Kyiv Archeparchy; Bishop Taras (Senkiv), Apostolic Administrator of Stryi Eparchy; Bishop Mykhail (Koltun), Eparch of Sokal-Zhovkva; Bishop Dmy-tro (Hryhorak), Eparch of Buchach; Bishop Yosaphat (Hovera), Lutsk Exarch; Bishop Leon (Malyi), auxiliary bishop of Lviv Roman-Catholic Church. Over 200 clergy, representatives of monastic orders and faithful from all areas of the eparchy as well as representatives of state administration. His Beatitude Svaitoslav together with bishops and clergy formed a procession to the courtyard of the Holy Trinity Cathedral where the Divine Liturgy was held. UGCC Head was greeted by the youngest parishioners of the Cathedral, and youth greeted the Apostolic Nuncio in English. Then the Major Archbishop Sviatoslav and the bishops were greeted by Rev. Taras Harysym-chuk, the pastor of the Cathedral. He emphasized that the presence of UGCC Primate and a large number of bishops on this day of the Holy Spirit was particularly significant. After all, the bishops are those anointed by the Holy Spirit, the inheritors of the holy apostles. During the sermon, His Beatitude Sviatoslav reminded the faithful that yesterday Christ’s Church celebrated the Feast of Pentecost -- an event through which “The Father through the ages nurtures his Church through the Holy Spirit.” According to UGCC Head, it is on the second day of this feast that the eyes of the Church are focused on the fundamental Person of yesterday’s events – the Holy Spirit—the third person of the Holy Trinity. “ He always spoke through the prophets. He never spoke about himself. He presented the Father as an eternally flowing stream. He presents us with the Son of God. And in this Spirit, the person acknowledges Christ the Lord,” he reminded the people of the saving acts of the Holy Spirit in the history of the salvation of mankind. Although the presence of the Holy Spirit in the world is sacramental, God manifests it through Christ’s Church. “Through the Holy Spirit bishops teach Churches and bless God’s people. Through the Holy Spirit, priests complete the Sacraments,” added UGCC Head. His Beatitude Sviatoslav related that he was at the proclamation of the Sambir-Drohobych Eparchy 20 years ago. Then the future UGCC Head was in the seminary choir of the Lviv Spiritual Seminary which accompanied the Divine Liturgy. He underlined that dur-ing these celebrations the Decree of UGCC Synod of Bishops was read and it began with the words: “It suited the Holy Spirit and us to establish on these lands, a new Eparchy. These words clearly testify to the fact that the issue of developing the Church, and especially the establishment of the Sambir-Drohobych Eparchy, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year is the work of the Holy Spirit. Towards the end, the Father and Head of the Church mentioned the first bishop of the eparchy – Bishop Yulian (Voronovsky) – who was “the tool” filled with the Holy Spirit. UGCC Head greeted the current Bishop of Sambir-Drohobych -- Bishop Yaroslav (Pryriz) with his 50th birthday and the 25th anniversary of his service. His Beatitude Sviatoslav wished the bishop generous gifts from the Holy Spirit that will assist him in his responsibilities as a bishop. After the Divine Liturgy, Bishop Bohdan (Dziurakh), Secretary of UGCC Synod of Bishops, performed the rite of the renewal of Bap-tismal vows which all the present jointly professed. Bishop Yaroslav (Pryriz) expressed his gratitude: “I want to express my thanks to the Lord who through many years manifested his great deeds on these lands. Let us remember that UGCC Sambir-Drohobych Eparchy was established through a Decree of His Beatitude Ivan Liubachivsky, UGCC Head, from July 12, 1993 by the resolution of UGCC Synod of Bishops from 16-31 May 1992. Historically the eparchy is a renewal of the old Sambir Eparchy, mentioned in the chronicles from the 18th century. From the 15th century, it was called “Peremyshl-Sambir” and in the 18th century, Peremyshl- Sambir - Sianotsk. The first bishop was Yulian (Voronovsly) whose enthronization was held in the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Drohobych on April 17, 1994. In 2006 Bishop Yaroslav (Pryriz) was named the Auxiliary Bishop of the eparchy. He was enthroned to the Sambir-Drohobych Eparchy on December 24, 2011 by His Beatitude Sviatoslav. Today there is a spiritual seminary in the eparchy which educates future priests. Every year there are some 10-12 graduates who even-tually serve as priests not only on the territory of the Sambir-Drohobych Eparchy but also beyond it. In the Catechetical Institute the faithful learn catechetical and deacon services as well as icon painting. Social services are provided by priests and staff of the eparchial Caritas. The charitable organization also provides spiritual and psychological support to child inva-lids, migrant families, and elderly people. Under the patronage of Caritas there also functions the Nazareth Rehabilitation Center for people with alcohol and drug addiction as well as Our Home, a residence for the homeless. Rev. Oleh Chupa Press Secretary, Sambir-Drohobych Eparchy =============================================================================================== Minute Meditations Jesus Is God Isn’t it amazing that our God took on our flesh? That He chose to be born in poverty and die in suffering so that we could know His love and be reconciled to Him? He wants to be more than an example, a teacher, or a friend. Jesus is God. And He wants to be your God, because He loves you. — from A 40-Day Spiritual Workout For Catholics
