FROM THE PRINCIPAL…
Once again, we have so many exciting educational
opportunities coming up this month at our amazing
school, including our Art Show, cross country skiing, our
Talent Show and the Bowls for Bed fundraiser which the
Grade 3 classes take part in. We are so fortunate!
As we focus on inclusiveness this month, I invite you to talk with your children
about what this means at school and in the community. How does it feel to
feel included? How does it feel to feel excluded? How can we ensure all are
included in our school goals and the values those goals represent? How does
this all play out on the basketball court? In the Library? The classroom? The
school itself? As a new principal, I have felt “included” (welcome,
appreciated, consulted, invited in) from my very first visit here. We have such
a warm and welcoming school—something to celebrate and be proud of.
Food for thought for this wintry mid-season month…
-Mrs. Birchall
NOTICE REGARDING NEW PA DAY
An additional Professional Activity (PA) Day has been added to
the 2015-2016 school year calendar for Simcoe County District
School Board (SCDSB) elementary and secondary schools. This
PA Day is scheduled for Friday April 15, 2016. The school
year calendar for 2015-16 now includes 187 instructional days and seven
professional activity days. The additional PA Day is part of the settlements that
were centrally negotiated with the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario
(ETFO) and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF).
View the updated school calendar at www.scdsb.on.ca and click on ‘Schools’
and then ‘School Year Calendars.’
CAMERON’S GOT TALENT!
Cameron Street P.S. is proud to present their
annual Talent Show on Thursday February
4th! Singing, dancing and so much
more—this is an event not to be missed!
Admission is by donation, and all proceeds go towards funding our sound
system and technology.
A presentation for the school will occur at 9:15am with a Showcase of Talent
starting at 6:30pm that evening.
CAMERON STREET SPIRIT!
A huge thank you to all our Cameron Comets on
their amazing spirit shown on Book Character
Day last Thursday! Once again, you made us
proud and we thank all for their participation and enthusiasm!
The month of February is so full of spirit fun beginning with Winter Hat
Day on Wednesday February 3rd in support of Winter Walk to School
Day (a Healthy Kids Community Challenge event). Then on Friday
February 12th, we are turning Cameron pink, red and white with
friendship! Finally, on Wednesday February 24th we take a stand
against bullying and recognize Pink Shirt Day at Cameron Street.
A great month ahead Comets and we look forward to seeing your spirit
shine!
SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS
Please join us for our next School Council meeting
on Monday February 8th at 7pm in the Library.
We are always looking for new members to get
involved in the great things we do at Cameron Street!
TERM 1 REPORT CARDS
On Friday February 19th, students will be
bringing home their Term 1 Report Card. Please
take a moment to read and review it with your
child. Ask them what they are learning, and
what they are successful with, and what skills they could work on
for the final term of school. You will be amazed at everything
they share with you!
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Do you know , or someone you know, have
a child who was born in 2012? If so, it’s
almost time to register them for
Kindergarten in the SCDSB! Beginning on
Monday January 25th, Simcoe County’s
public schools will be registering children for
Kindergarten for the 2016-2017 school year.
Required registration documents include birthdate
documentation, proof of address, and record of immunization.
For more information, please visit www.scdsb.on.ca/
kindergarten or call our school office at 705-445-1827.
BUILDERS CLUB
A reminder to club members that Builders
Club is meeting on Monday February 22nd
at 3:20pm in Mr. Potter’s classroom.
WINTER WALK TO SCHOOL DAY
Wednesday February 3rd is Winter Walk to
School Day! Healthy Kids Community Challenge is
looking for all schools, families and students to
wear their best winter hat and walk to school!
Let’s show our community once again our fantastic Cameron
spirit and accept the challenge!
TOP 8 SNOW DAY QUESTIONS
Bus cancellations and snow days are inevitable in
Simcoe County. Each time buses are (or aren’t)
cancelled, the SCDSB and the Transportation
Consortium receive many questions from students, parents and
community members. Check out the Sharing Simcoe blog for the top
eight questions we receive and our responses: visit
www.sharingsimcoe.com and search for ‘snow’.
Remember we are in the WEST ZONE, and if there are any
cancellations or delays, we will post the information on our school
website (www.cam.scdsb.on.ca) as well as our Twitter feed. Stay up
to date by subscribing and following us today!
You are invited to the first annual Cameron Street Art Show on
Thursday February 19th from 9am-6pm in our school gym.
Showcasing all of our students’ art work from Kindergarten to the
Intermediate division, this event is a wonderful opportunity for you to
come celebrate your child and what they have created!
Many thanks to Ms. Murphy and her art show committee for
organizing this event!
PUBLIC SPEAKING
Congratulations to all our Junior and
Intermediate students that spoke in our Speech
Competition on Wednesday January 27th. We
are very proud of all your hard work and the
interesting topics you shared. A job well done to
each and every one of you!
Many thanks to our judges—Jan Bennett, Robert Bolt and Sue
Thompson—for taking the time to come and listen to all the
amazing speeches and provide feedback to the speakers! Also,
thank you to Mrs. Shea and Mrs. Boone for their work organizing
this event and helping our classroom teachers prepare our
students to do their very best!
We wish Kayli Mesley (Intermediate 1st) and Ali Bull (Junior 1st)
all the luck as they move on to compete in the Legion
Competition which will be held on Sunday February 8th at 1pm.
REMINDER ABOUT OUR SCHOOL PARKING LOT
A friendly reminder to take extra care in our school
parking lot now that snow has finally arrived!
Drivers: please be mindful of pulling out of parking
spaces as large piles of snow can decrease visibility.
As well, remember that parents are not to park in our bus loading
zone from 8:40-9:00am and 3:00-3:45pm due to the arrival (and
dismissal) of our school buses and vans.
School board property is private property, and in some cases (eg.
After hours), vehicles could be towed from parking lots to facilitate
snow removal. Unauthorized parking in school lots overnight and/or
weekends is at the sole risk of the vehicle owner.
OPERATIONS APPRECIATION DAY
Wednesday February 17th is Operations
Appreciation Day in the Simcoe County
District School Board. On that day, school
communities across the county will celebrate the positive impact
custodians and operations maintenance employees make. The
work they do to keep our school safe and clean effects each of
us—they help to create the positive environments for learning and
working we all enjoy.
We thank Mr. Wright, Ms. Habgood and Mrs. Fifield for helping
make Cameron Street be a great place to learn and grow! To
honour the work they do, we ask our students and staff to wear
blue on Wednesday February 17th.
CAMERON SPORTS UPDATE
Our Intermediate Boys Basketball Team and
our Intermediate Girls Volleyball Team have

turn Collingwood pink again! Check out the latest news and special events we have planned by clicking on ‘Pink Day 2016’ on our
school website (www.cam.scdsb.on.ca)

The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB)
recognizes students, staff and volunteers who
demonstrate good character in their daily lives at
the annual Character Recognition Awards Evening, taking place on
Wednesday May 18th this year.
Each year, nominations from schools and the Education Centre are
received highlighting the good character of our students, staff and
volunteers. Nominees are invited to the Education Centre on
Wednesday May 18th to celebrate those who exemplify the SCDSB
Commit to Character attributes. The nomination process opens on
Monday February 8th and ends on Friday February 26th.
Recommendations can be made by email or fax.
More information and the Character Recognition form is available
at www.scdsb.on.ca under ‘About Us’ and then click on ‘Commit to

GLOBAL CLUB EVENT
The Grade 3 Global Club cares about clean water.
Handmade bracelets, made by the Global Club,
will be sold Monday February 8th and Tuesday
February 9th just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Purchase a colourful bracelet for your Mom,
sweetie or yourself, and the funds will be
donated towards clean water development in countries of need.

Let’s change ME to WE!
The students, Mrs. Hutchinson, Ms. Goslett and Ms. Wegner thank
you in advance for your support!
FROM THE LIBRARY
On Wednesday February 10th, Cameron Street
welcomes author Michael Wade! Students from
Grades 3-6 will be attending this special
presentation in our library as he shares books
from his hilarious series “And Then It Happened.” We look forward to
hearing his message and meeting one of our favourite authors!
New resources and programs have been added to our Cameron
website under ‘Resources’. From literacy to math to technology,
programs that we are using in our classrooms with the students can be
found here! Take a look today and have your child share them with
you!
ROTARY SWIM SATURDAYS
Do something heart-healthy this month and head to the
Collingwood Pool for the free Rotary swim! Every
Saturday from 2-4pm, this is a great way to get some
exercise and have fun with friends and family!
DOODLE 4 SCDSB CONTEST
The SCDSB is holding a Doodle 4 SCDSB contest, inviting students of all ages to create a ‘doodle’ using the letters
SCDSB, and telling the world “What makes me unique.” This exciting contest is modelled after the Doodle 4 Google
competition, but is designed specifically for our students!
There will be one winner from each grade grouping: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-10 and 11-12/Continuing Education. The grand
prize includes a 3D Doodler EduBundle ($1400 value) for the winner’s class, and their artwork will be featured on the SCDSB website, and next
year’s student agenda. A runner up from each grade category will win art supply bundles from Brault & Bouthillier Canada and Baldwin’s
School Supply.
Find out more at www.doodle4scdsb.blogspot.ca/. The deadline to submit a Doodle is February 26th, so students—get your creative on!
OTIP TEACHING AWARDS NOMINATIONS
DUE
Want to recognize a teacher who does great work
at our school? For many years, the Ontario
Teachers Insurance Plan (OTIP) awards have
recognized the excellence of teachers in publically funded education.
There are three categories of awards: elementary school teacher,
secondary school teacher and beginning teacher in the first five years
of teaching. Winning teachers attend a fall awards ceremony in
Toronto where they are presented with a personal award of $1000
and a certificate of recognition. Their schools are also recognized
with a $1000 prize and certificate of recognition.
Visit www.teachingawards.ca for details. The deadline for submitting
nominations is March 31st.
MESSAGE FROM THE SIMCOE MUSKOKA
HEALTH DISTRICT HEALTH UNIT: STRESSFUL
MORNINGS
The key is organization! Try these tips to help get
the whole family out the door on time:
1. Plan ahead. Try packing lunches and picking clothes out the
night before.
2. Go to bed at a reasonable hour so you wake up rested and
ready for the day.
3. Wake up and get yourself ready first, before your child.
4. Keep the TV and electronics off. These can be disruptive first
thing in the morning.
5. Give clear instructions and be realistic about what your child
can do for themselves. Praise them when they do something
well to help them learn new skills.
Finally, remember to have patience. Your child learns from
watching you! In time, your child will learn to plan ahead, be
organized, and develop patience too!
For more tips, visit www.simcoemuskokahealth.org or
www.triplepontario.ca.
