June 29 LAST DAY OF
SCHOOL!!!
Once again, June brings to Cameron Street a sense of excitement for us and
our students as we celebrate our learning, take that one last field trip, and
yes, count down the days to summer vacation.
However, for every special moment this month holds for us, it also means we
prepare to say goodbye to our Grade 8s as they become graduates, to our
Grade 4 FI students as they prepare for their next chapter, and some that
have worked with your children.
In the following pages, you will see some beautiful words written by those
that we say so long to and that we thank for what they have done, and meant,
to Cameron Street. We always hear of the impact teachers can make on a
student, yet take a moment to see their messages and to witness the impact
your children have had on their lives...
THANK YOU FOR 50 AMAZING YEARS!!!
On behalf of the Cameron Street staff, students and
Anniversary Committee, we thank all of those that came and
celebrated with us last month as we honoured 50 wonderful
years! In particular, we say a special thank you to:
The Town Cryer Ken Templeman
Director Steve Blake and Superintendent Jackie Kavanagh
Mayor Sandra Cooper
The Cameron Street School Council
The incredible entertainment we were so lucky to have from the CCI B
Jazz B Band and Mr. Clayton, The Treble Makers, The Collingwood Circus
Club, The Leynes Brothers, Fleet-Wood Dancentre and the Cameron
Street Ukuladies
The Paint Bar and Sobeys for the beautiful anniversary cakes
We look forward to the next 50 amazing years at Cameron Street!!!

TRACK AND FIELD NEWS

celebration begins at 1:35pm in the gym, and we
invite families and friends to join us as we honour
the learning our students have done and the positive choices they
are making!
A SPECIAL NOTE FROM MRS. PLYLEY
Wow – I have been here over 43 years here at
Cameron Street! It has passed in the “blink of an
eye.” I think I was 25 when I started here (so you do
the math)!
There have been so many changes over the years - way, way too many
to mention – the use of computers replacing manual and electric
typewriters, photocopiers instead of the old ditto and gestetner
machines, and the addition of full-time kindergarten, French
Immersion, etc.
I’ve been through about 10 principals and I can’t even count how
many teachers!
However – one thing never changes. Every staff member (past &
present), from administration, teachers, office staff, educational
assistants, designated early childhood educators and custodians, has
‘given their all’ and always put the students first – no matter what it
takes or how hard they have to work. It is heartening to know this will
continue long after I leave.
Thank you to everyone who has made my stay here at Cameron so
enjoyable – it’s been like a second home to me! I’ll miss everyone, but
I am looking forward to retirement and I’m sure the office will be left
in good hands!
Have a great summer everyone!
-Jan Plyley

year?!? On Thursday June 8th, it is Jersey Day! Show
your love of your favourite team or sport—we cannot
wait to see your spirit!
On Wednesday June 21st we ask that all students and staff were their
fancy schmancy clothes as we honour our volunteers at our last
assembly of the year! Finally, we end another amazing year on
Thursday June 29th as we ask everyone to show their Canada spirit
wear their red, white and Canada 150 colours!!!
GRADUATION AT CAMERON STREET
Our Grade 8 class will be holding their Graduation on Wednesday June 28th at 6:30pm.
GLOBAL CLUB
The Global Club extends a heartfelt Thank You for
supporting the Me to We Campaigns (WE.org).
Through the support of the Cameron community,
we supplied the Salvation Army with box loads of non-perishable
food items in the fall, bought goats for families to experience
business opportunities, welcomed motivational speaker and
leadership instructor Sophia to our school in April, and afforded
educational supplies through our jewelry sales. One more Global
Club event is taking place during the Cameron Carnival. It’s our
Wish Stick Sale to raise funds for drinking water well construction
in Kenya Africa. Wish sticks are hand-crafted and look lovely
adorning flower pots and indoor gardens. Make a wish and
please purchase a Wish Stick to give someone a clean drink of
water! -Mrs. Hutchinson, Ms. Wegner & Ms. Goslett
A SPECIAL NOTE FROM MRS. HUTCHINSON
Have I really been teaching 31 years? That sounds
like a long time ... about the same length as spelling
dictation on a Friday afternoon when the sun is
shining. That too can seem to go on.
Over my teaching career fashion has had skirts short, long and short
again. Under wear has become over wear. Hair has come, gone, been
big, cropped, technicolored, bleached, curled, straightened, extended
and dreadlocked. Names have not been exempt. They too reflect
changing times; charting the rise of new influences whether they be
pop, TV, film or sport stars, or perhaps an inspirational leader
capturing hearts and minds.
Despite the altering of outward appearance and what people are
called, there has always been and always will be a constant. That is
the inner need to strive for what is true and right.
I look back with gratitude. I entered a profession dedicated to
assisting young people achieve their potential, to revealing or finding
their best selves. As I leave it, I am taking many of you with me. You
will live on in my memories. I'll always remember the things we
achieved together: the many successful play ‘n learn activities, the
field trips, the sports and clubs, and those Christmas concerts.
To the parents, I was there to help and motivate your child. Parenting
is a community activity—and I extend my gratitude to you for the
privilege to contribute to and support family life.
I want to pay tribute to my colleagues for their support, friendship
and exemplars of what it is to serve faithfully and with humility. I will
always remember our shared laughter, our joys as well as our
struggles. Thank-you too, for the notes of appreciation, words of
encouragement, sharing of resources, and time but mostly for your
sincerity and trust.
And lastly, I leave you with this thought. There is only ever one of
each of us: one Anne Smith or one Louis Jones. We are unique. We are
neither better nor less than anybody else but rather the best or least
of ourselves.
Thank-you.

A SPECIAL NOTE FROM MADAME BAKER
It is with mixed emotions that I say “au
revoir” to the staff and students of
Cameron Street School. I have accepted a job
at Clearview Meadows in Stayner and though I
am happy to not have to drive from Stayner every day I will be
very sad to leave behind the friendly staff and wonderful students
at Cameron. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a Cameron
Comet!

CHARACTER TRAIT FOR JUNE
KEEPING KIDS’ MINDS AND BODIES HEALTHY
THIS SUMMER
All parents want their children to grow up healthy.
Being healthy means lots of things—growing up
strong and active, making connections, developing positive rela-
tionships with others, and learning to make good, responsible
decisions.
Here are some tips on how to keep your child’s mind and body
active this summer.
Summer programs—over the summer months there are a
wide variety of programs to keep children and youth active.
Whether outdoors or in a facility like the YMCA, swimming is
a summertime favourite. Consider signing your child up for
swimming lessons, giving them the confidence they need to
be safe in and around the water.
Summer day camps—summer camp is a great opportunity to
introduce your child to ‘physical literacy.’ This means getting
kids to feel comfortable being active, so when asked to play a
game such as soccer at recess, they are confident to say ‘yes.’
Summer camp teaches children how to be active in a fun and
supportive environment.
Child care—when looking for child care for your youngster,
make sure the centre is health conscious and provides good
nutritious meals to ensure children develop in a positive
environment. Try to find a centre that incorporates a ‘Play to
Learn’ curriculum and make sure the staff observe and
document your child’s daily activities. A good child care
centre should feel like home away from home while providing
the tools to help children reach their full potential.
The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka offers child care and summer
programs for children of all ages and abilities. To learn more
about the programs begin offered this summer, visit
www.ymcaofsimcoemuskoka.ca.
