ULM opens Sun Belt Conference play against Western Kentucky with three games this weekend at Warhawk Field. The Warhawks are in the mist of a nine-game homestand that wraps up next Tuesday and Wednesday against Lamar. ULM took the series against Western Kentucky last season winning on Friday and Sunday in the fi rst meetings between the schools. The Warhawks continue to pound the ball out of the park with 12 home runs just eight games into the season putting them on pace to hit 84 on the year which would break last year’s school record of 70. WKU enters the series 5-2 on the year after dropping a 6-1 game at Belmont on Wednesday. The Hilltoppers were picked to fi nish seventh in the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll after fi nishing tied for sixth last season.

Quickly

The Warhawks dropped two-of-three games to visiting Sam Houston State last weekend. ULM hit four home runs during the series and got a great pitching performance from Josh Lett in a losing effort in the series opener. Junior Ben Soignier fi nished the weekend recording hits in seven of his last 10 at-bats and senior A.J. Siggers went 4-for-7 during the same stretch.

The Graveyard

ULM walked into Nicholls State’s Didier Field having been told it was a graveyard for the long ball. Only fi ve home runs were hit out of the park last season in 24 games. The Warhawks made sure that total would at least be tied this season by sending fi ve balls out of the park in just three games.

Kyle Suire hit a solo blast in the top of the 10th inning on opening night lifting the Warhawks to a 1-0 victory.

After a Saturday where the “Graveyard” was true to its nickname, ULM awoke the dead with four home runs in two innings on Sunday.

Suire, Dexter Fontenot and A.J. Siggers went back-to-back-to-back in the fourth inning and Ben Soignier hit a two-run blast in the fi fth.

Warhaws Dig the Long Ball

The Warhawk hitters broke the ULM home run record last year sending 70 balls over the outfi eld wall and this year is no different. Just eight games into the season ULM has already hit 12 home runs and continuing at this pace would give the Warhawks 84 in 2008.

Two-Inning Ward

ULM closer Derek Ward has two saves and a win to his credit this season in three appear-ances and he has gone multiple innings in all three.

In his fi rst outing, Ward tossed the fi nal two innings of ULM’s 1-0 season-opening victory at Nicholls State. He picked up his fi rst save tossing 1.2 innings at No. 29 Southern Mississippi and threw 2.0 innings in game two against Sam Houston State for his second save.


Late Start

Due to NCAA legislation, the start of the season was pushed back two weeks this season causing the Warhawks to have their latest season opener since 1986 when they also opened the season on February 22 splitting a doubleheader with Stephen F. Austin.

You have to go back to 1982 to fi nd another start date this late as the Warhawks also started on Feb. 22 that year as well.

The closest ULM has come to starting this late came in 1993 when it opened the season at Texas A&M on Feb. 19.

On Tap

The Warhawks welcome former Southland Conference foe Lamar to Warhawk Field on Tues-day and Wednesday for a pair of mid-week games before traveling to New Orleans, La., for a Sun Belt series against UNO.

Leading Off

The Warhawks improved to 28-30 all-time to start the season with their 1-0 victory at Nicholls State and have now won eight of the last nine openers. The road victory to start the season improved ULM to 5-20 in such games.

Captain (s) Clutch

The Warhawks two captains proved their teammates chose well as they dominated the weekend, especially the season opener. Se-nior southpaw Jared Jennings tossed 8.0 in-nings of four hit ball, striking out a career high 10 batters and not allowing any free passes.

ULM’s other captain, Kyle Suire hit the game winning home run in the top of the 10th in-ning giving the Warhawks a 1-0 victory. He fi nished the weekend 10-for-16 from the plate with seven RBIs, two home runs and 17 total bases.

World Series Experience

Four ULM players have World Series experience at the junior college level. Kyle Suire and Matt Collins were both members of the 2006 LSU-Eunice team that won the NJCAA Division II National Championship.

Drew Graham and Ryan McMillan were teammate on the 2007 Cowley County Community College squad that played in the NJCAA Division I World Series.

World Series Experience -- Part Two

The ULM players will have an opportunity to do something that players across the country dream about, playing in Rosenblatt Stadium. The Warhawks wrap up the regular season in Omaha, Neb., against Creighton. The fi rst two games of the series will be in held in the histori-cal site of the NCAA College World Series -- Rosenblatt Stadium.

The Warhawks will hope to make a return trip to Omaha almost exactly one month to the date of the their fi rst trip.

Shutting the Door

Jared Jennings and Derek Ward combined for the Warhawks fi rst shutout since February 19, 2005 against Tennessee-Martin (1-0); it was ULM’s fi rst road shutout since a 4-0 victory at Lamar on May 22, 2004.

The Warhawk pitching staff didn’t allow an earned run over the fi rst 12 2/3 innings of the season. Ryan Kirk continued to shutdown Nicholls State in game two of the series holding the Colonels scoreless through the fi rst 2 2/3 innings.

New Faces on the Mound

ULM sent three transfer to the mound to start the weekend series against Sam Houston State. Josh Lett a transfer from UNC Asheville started Friday, Ryan Kirk a transfer from Rose State College on Saturday and Drew Graham a transfer from Cowley Community College on Sun-day.

In the season opener series at Nicholls State, ULM sent Lett and Kirk to the mound along with four-year senior Jared Jennings.

Tough Outs

The majority of ULM batters have been tough outs this season, but a select few have been down right diffi cult.

Kyle Suire and Dexter Fontenot have record-ed hits all but one game on the season; Suire 7-of-8 and Fontenot 6-of-7.

Ryan McMillan has a hit in 6-of-8 games, Jon Prevost in 5-of-7 starts, A.J. Siggers in 6-of-8 games and Ben Soignier in 6-of-8 games.

Fast Start

ULM’s 4-0 start to the season was the fi rst time that the Warhawks had started that quick since 2001 and just the second time since 1967 they opened the year 4-0.

Suire Named Sun Belt

Player of the Week

ULM second baseman Kyle Suire received the fi rst Sun Belt Player of the Week award for the 2008 season after hitting .625 (10-for-16) with two home runs, seven RBIs, six runs scored and 17 total bases as the Warhawks (3-0) swept the season opening series at Nicholls State.

Suire’s honor is the fi rst of any kind for a ULM baseball player since the Warhawks joined the Sun Belt Conference last season.

Conference Play Already?

The Warhawks open Sun Belt play in their ninth game of the season due to NCAA legislation pushing the start of the season back two weeks. It is the earliest ULM has played a conference game since 1997 when it opened Southland Conference play in its eighth game of the season. In 1993, the Warhawks played Northwestern State in the fi fth game of the season to open the Southland Conference season.


Crowd Busters

The home opener between ULM and Louisiana Tech didn’t provide the outcome on the scoreboard the War-hawks wanted, but it did at the turnstiles. 2,405 fans packed Warhawk Field to watch the matchup between the two schools. Fans lined the walls down both the right and left fi eld lines, while the ULM students packed the student section behind the left fi eld wall.

The ULM pitching staff only issued four free passes in 28.0 innings of work on opening weekend and just 14 for the entire season. Seniors Jared Jennings and Josh Lett didn’t walk any batters in their two starts and junior Ryan Kirk only walked one in his start on Satur-day.

ULM is averaging just 2.3 walks per nine innings and is averaging 2.8 strikeouts per one walk.

Home Openers

ULM is 43-14-1 in home openers since 1952 and 20-9-1 in home openers that follow a road trip to open the season. The Warhawks have won six of their last nine home openers.

Conference Openers

The Warhawks are 16-11 all-time in conference open-ers and are 1-0 in Sun Belt Conference openers after defeating UALR 8-1 last season.

The Warhawks have won their last three conference openers, in fact ULM has swept the past two confer-ence series openers (UALR, Stephen F. Austin).

West Monroe catcher Chris Sinclair, New Iberia shortstop Boomer Blanchard and Rayne right-

handed pitcher Tony Dischler will all remain instate to play their collegiate ball. Blanchard is a transfer

from LSU-Eunice.

Pitchers Matt Cawthon and Josh Turner will join the Warhawks from the junior college ranks. Caw-

ton, a southpaw from Yukon, Okla., currently attends Rose State College in Midwest City, Okla., while

Turner, a right-hander from New Boston, Texas, attends Weatherford Junior College in Weatherford,

Texas, after playing at Texarkana Junior College last year.

Tom O’Gorman comes to ULM from Kincumber, Australia, by way of Cowley County Community

College in Arkansas City, Kan., where he is an infi elder for the Tigers.

Blanchard hit .343 with 10 doubles, two triples, one home run and 34 RBIs his freshman season at

LSUE. The Westgate High School product was very active on the base paths stealing 28 bases in 36

attempts and scoring 70 runs. Blanchard, who checks in at 6-foot-0 170 pounds, was named the Top

Defensive Player on the team and was recognized as the top shortstop in the region.

Blanchard received interest from Louisiana-Lafayette, Sienna, Northwestern and Southeastern

Louisiana.

Cawthon tossed 31 innings at Rose State last season picking up a pair of wins and a couple of

saves. He recorded 21 strikeouts and yielded just 31 hits using his arsenal of three pitches, including a

solid breaking ball.

The 6-foot-3 Dischler posted a 6-3 record with a 2.10 ERA last season at Rayne High School in

southern Louisiana. He struck out 80 batters in just 67 innings of work as a junior leading the Wolves

to the 3A semifi nals. Dischler chose the Warhawks over New Orleans, Nicholls State and Southeastern

Louisiana.

O’Gorman will join fellow countryman and current Warhawk Ryan McMillan on the roster next sea-

son. He hit 11 home runs his freshman season as Cowley fi nished the year 47-18 overall advancing to

the NJCAA World Series. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound right hander, was named to the Jayhawk East All-

Conference First Team.

O’Gorman and McMillan played together on Junior Olympic teams in Australia. He received interest

from both Oklahoma State and South Carolina.

Sinclair hit .315 as a junior with 30 RBIs from the left side of the plate. The 6-foot-0 catcher helped

the Rebels to a 34-7 record last season and a trip to the Louisiana 5A State Championship Game.

Arkansas, LSU, Alabama, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Louisiana Tech all showed interest in Sin-

clair.

Turner went 6-2 with a 3.30 ERA his freshman season at Texarkana Junior College. He also re-

corded three saves, while striking out 35 batters and walking just 14 in 51 innings of work.

Warhawk Field

Warhawk Field has long been one of the most diffi cult places for ULM opponents to play. The Warhawks hold a 424-227-1 all-time record at their current home. ULM has posted at least 15 home victories at Warhawk Field on 19 different occasions, winning over 20 games in nine separate seasons.

Warhawk Field Face Lift

Since taking over as head coach Jeff Schexnaider has taken considerable steps to give Warhawk Field a face lift, making the 26-year old stadium a more fan friendly environment. The improvements made in his two years include remodeling of the home and visitor dugouts, construction of a designated student section, construction of Diamond Club picnic area, construction of a three-foot brick wall enclosing the playing fi eld, resurfacing the scoreboard, the “left fi eld lounge” along the third base side has been updated with new grills and tents, a new patio deck for corporate outings and a redesigned playground for children.

Look Ma, I’m On TV!

ULM’s game at South Alabama on Saturday, May 3, will be televised by CSS and Cox Sports Television. The game time has not yet been announced. The Warhawks appeared on television one time last season winning 8-6 at Troy.

Suire - Schexnaider Connection

Senior Kyle Suire made an immediate impact in his fi rst season with the Warhawks last season and that included rewriting the ULM record books. With his 10 home runs on the season, Suire broke head coach Jeff Schexnaider’s record for home runs in a season by a second baseman. Schexnaider hit seven during the 1986 season helping the Warhawks to 62 homers on the season which was the school record until it was broken.......last year by Suire and the Warhawks.

Rebuilding the Mound

ULM will have to turn to some new faces on the mound this season as players who started 44 of the Warhawks 57 games last season have either moved on or inactive at the beginning of the season.

Shake Begins Season Two

2008 marks the second full season for Jeff Schexnaider at the helm of the Warhawks after taking over the head coaching duties midway through the 2006 season.

Shake returned to his alma mater in 2005 for his second stint as an assistant coach, this time under Brad Holland. His fi rst go around as an assistant was from 1987-89 under legendary coach Lou St. Amant.

Hanging from the Rafters

ULM retired the jerseys of Chuck Finley and Ben Sheets on November 3, 2007 marking the fi rst time in the program’s history that a player has had their jersey retired.

Former ULM head coach Lou St. Amant is the only other person in the program’s history to have this honor bestowed upon them.

Current head coach Jeff Schexnaider had to switch from his traditional #15 jersey to #51 this season to honor the retirements.

Triple S-S-S

ULM’s combination of Kyle Suire, A.J. Siggers and Ben Soignier are enough to make any opposing pitcher sweat.

All three hit over .300 during Sun Belt games last season play led by Siggers’ .348 clip. The trio combined for 21 home runs, 116 RBIs and 29 doubles for the entire season.

Suire led the Warhawks at the dish last season hitting .338 with 10 home runs and 44 RBIs as ULM broke the single-season home run record.

Soignier was a Freshman All-American by Louisville Slugger in 2006 and hit .275 with 12 doubles and fi ve home runs despite battling a broken hand for a majority of last season.

What a Finish

Kyle Suire’s success so far this season should come as no surprise, the second baseman ended the year going 15-for-28 (.536) over the Warhawks fi nal six games.

To take it even further, Suire recorded a hit in 20 of ULM’s fi nal 24 games recording a .420 batting average and 23 RBIs. Seven of his 10 home runs on the season came during that stretch.

In comparison, Suire opened the season hitting .191 over the Warhawks fi rst 14 games.

Fresh off leading the Warhawks to their best season in fi ve years, Jeff Schexnaider begins his second full season as the head coach at his alma mater. Schexnaider was named the school’s tenth head coach on May 11, 2006, bringing his coach-ing career full circle to where it began. Schexnaider led ULM to a 29-28 overall re-cord and a 15-14 mark in the Sun Belt last season, fi nishing just a half game out of second place in the seventh best league in the nation. The War-hawks crushed the school home run record with 70 on the season, passing the previous mark of 62 set in 1986; a team that Schexnaider played on and hit seven home runs for. The Warhawks fi nished the season ranked 14th in the NCAA averaging 1.23 home runs per game and 28th in the nation with a slugging per-centage of .477. Under his direction, David Mixon fi nished 73rd in the NCAA with eight saves out of the bullpen. Schexnaider’s presence was felt immediate-ly when Ben Soignier was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American Team following the 2006 season. The shortstop, who played for Schexnaider at West Monroe High School, hit .348 with fi ve home runs, 10 doubles, one triple and 30 RBIs. Schexnaider took over the reigns of the Warhawks midway through the 2006 campaign, coaching the fi nal 42 games of the season. ULM started the season 0-13 prior to Schexnaider tak-ing control of the team. When Schexnaider took charge of the program, the Warhawks went 18-24 over the course of the season. His return to the program his signaled the beginning of a new era for the ULM baseball pro-gram, not only on the fi eld, but also with large scale improvements to Warhawk Field. Since taking over as head coach, Schexnaid-er’s improvements to the facility have included the creation of an outfi eld student section, improve-ments to both home and visitor dugouts and a three foot brick wall enclosing the playing fi eld down both foul lines.
