Saddle Up!BELFAST POISED FOR THE RETURN OF POLO IN THE CITY

Following the sell-out success of last year’s inaugural Polo In The City, this exciting sporting and social event will return to Lower Botanic Playing Fields at Stranmillis Embankment on Saturday 25th August, raising funds for charity

Mencap.

As well as the on-field action, the day will boast a fantastic selection of hospitality, entertainment and VIP experiences. There will be a number of relaxed and stylish marquees available, including a Veuve Clicquot Champagne Marquee, where spectators will be able to relax and soak up the atmosphere of the day. Citybeat radio will also be broadcasting live from the venue. To mark the end of the polo matches early evening, a gourmet barbeque will be served and an onsite post polo party will commence. With several new additions, this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than before. These additions include a modern and stylish VIP Veuve Clicquot Champagne Garden encompassing the most desirable seating in the hottest spot of the grounds. House of Fraser Belfast will add to the wardrobes of both Best Dressed Female and Best Dressed Male on the day. The winners will both receive incredible prize packages to the value of £3,500 each. Michelle Jackson, store manager of House

of Fraser said: “We are delighted to once again be back at Polo In The City and to be able to introduce Best Dressed Prizes. It was great to see such eclectic style at last year’s event and my fellow judges and I are looking forward to seeing what Northern Ireland’s fashionable ladies and gents choose to wear this year.” The core reason behind the event is to raise money for Northern Ireland’s leading disability charity, Mencap. All the funds raised through Polo in the City will go directly towards improving the lives of children and adults with learning disabilities across Northern Ireland. Tickets for the event are £65.00 and are available via mencap.org.uk/polointhecity or simply click anywhere on this page to buy purchase. To enquire about hospitality packages please contact Mencap directly on 028 9069 1351.

Bold colours in Aztec and floral prints are a huge trend this season and for a classic

look spots and stripes take centre stage. The biggest colour trends are red, blue, white,

yellow and coral and for a great retro look try bralet tops and highwaist pants in these

shades.

We are all getting in the holiday mood, or hoping to enjoy some of the better weather here at home, fingers crossed! Either way smart fashionistas are clearing space on

the rails for shorter shorts, cropped tops and lighter dresses in preparation.

To go casual match your summer outfits with Converse trainers or a stout pair of boots. Or to glam things up go for heels in contrasting

bold colours.

For boys the essential look for summer includes coloured chino shorts, plimsolls and

striped T’s.

Diet Coke Design Awards

A SPARKLING FUTURE FOR YOUNG DESIGNER WITH DIET COKE

Now an integral part of Belfast FASHIONWEEK’s autumn shows, the Diet Coke Design Award is back for the third year and fashion lovers across Ireland are once

again invited to submit design concepts which, if successful, could appear on the catwalk in October.

Now an integral part of Belfast FASHIONWEEK’s autumn shows, the Diet Coke Design Award is back for the third year and fashion lovers across Ireland are once again invited to submit design concepts which, if successful, could appear on the catwalk in October. And just as Diet Coke announces its latest design collaboration with fashion icon Jean Paul Gaultier, who has created three limited edition aluminium bottles for the brand this Spring, this competition once again celebrates the brand’s links to all things stylish across Ireland. The competition, which is open to all fashionistas and stylish Diet Coke fans with a passion for fashion – not just design students - opens doors in the fashion industry by offering a top prize of a mini scholarship to the London College of Fashion. The lucky winner will also see his/her design come to life on the catwalk at Belfast FASHIONWEEK, courtesy of leading couturier Una Rodden, and have it featured in a photo shoot with top fashion photographer Khara Pringle.Entrants will be asked to put their raw talent to work by designing

a fashion forward and unique garment which captures the ‘Love it Light’ attitude of the brand. This year the fashion opportunities will be extended to three finalists instead of one straight winner as judges will shortlist three designs for Una Rodden to create and then the overall winner will be the result of online polls as well as judges’ input when it appears on the catwalk and the prize awarded live in front of the anticipating audience.Aoife Nagle, Senior Brand Manager at Diet Coke, is excited about the new element this year; “It’s brilliant to be able to open the floor up to more up-and-coming designers by allowing three finalists to take to the stage this year. The standard has always been incredibly high and we expect competition levels to soar, given the new stakes.”She continued: “We’re really delighted to be championing up-and-coming designers at FASHIONWEEK, it’s the perfect platform to support the future of Irish fashion with Diet Coke’s now popular award.” Director of FASHIONWEEK Cathy Martin added: “For anyone worried

about their own design credentials, it’s important to remember that our first ever winner was a banker who loved tweaking dresses in her spare time. She worked with Una Rodden to create a catwalk-worthy, stunning dress and really enjoyed her time at London College of Fashion doing a course in Structured Lingerie.Roseanna McReynolds from Tyrone was last year’s winner and she has just returned from her time in London, “The teaching I had at LCF was invaluable and I had so much fun at the same time. I’m so glad I entered the competition and I would encourage anyone with a flair for fashion to give it a go too. It’s definitely helped to kick start my fashion career!” For more information on the competition and how to enter, please contact the Belfast FASHIONWEEK team on +44(0)28 9032 4437 or email [email protected] . Budget haircuts create nine new jobs

A leading Belfast hairdressing business is helping to create nine new jobs by expanding into a different segment of the hairdressing market.

The ‘Junior Style Academy’ is the brainchild of Jason Shankey, who aims to create careers for the best up and coming hairdressers, whilst also helping families whose budgets have been stretched during the difficult economic climate. “We have spent over six months training our apprentices, free of charge, to help them become leading hairdressers, and they’re now ready to run the Academy”, said Shankey. “We’ve created a platform for them

to hone their skills so that they can forge a great future career in the hairdressing industry, and at the same time, families can use the service to save money on their hairdressing bills”. Over one million jobs have been lost to young people since 2007 and apprenticeships have been identified as one way to improve young peoples’ chances of gaining work. “We’re committed to helping young

people back to work by sharing with them the best skills available, and we’re committed to our community by helping to lower the cost of living”. The Academies will operate from the company’s Ballyhackamore and Lisburn Road salons, with prices starting as low as £7.50 for a boy’s haircut and £10 for a man’s haircut.

Hot to trot!Miss NI, Tiffany Brien, is riding high as she prepares for

Down Royal Ladies Day on 23 June

One of the biggest social and stylish days-out in Northern Ireland’s event calendar, Ladies Day, will return to Down Royal Racecourse on Saturday 23 June and promises to be more stylish than ever.Dressed to impress and riding high on the crest of her recent win, the newly crowned Miss NI is all smiles as she leads the way in the style stakes, where she’s sure to be amongst the ‘Best Dressed’ at Ladies Day, part of the two-day Summer Festival of Racing at Down Royal Racecourse. With a luxurious four night trip to Monte Carlo up for grabs for the Best Dressed Lady, fashionistas should get inspired by the glamour of our favourite royals - Monaco’s Grace Kelly and the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton - and

dress ‘wholly’ appropriate in racing lace to be the ‘mane’ attraction!

Whilst the royal wedding saw sales of lace soar, ladies should stay clear of going down the bridal path and take the lead from our stars of the red carpet, in romantic and delicate creations in an array of colours and styles.

So whether you opt for a vintage find for a classic look or opt for a more contemporary take on the lace theme, it’s game on to be the first past the post in the style stakes.

The Best Dressed lady will swap the racecourse for the runway in Monaco, Europe’s playground for the rich and famous; the prize includes return flights to Nice, four nights

in 4 star hotel accommodation, helicopter transfers, and £500 spending money.

The competition is open to all ladies attending Ladies Day. Gates open from 12pm on Derby Day, Saturday 23 June, with the first race starting at 2.20pm. Admission is £15 with hospitality options available from £55. Entrance tickets can be purchased online, from the racecourse office or at the turnstiles on the day.

Sparkling events to celebrate Diamond Year at Castle Coole

Castle Coole is celebrating 60 years under the care and conservation of the National Trust and a fantastic programme of special events is planned to celebrate

in style at the end of June.

A glittering Diamond Gala Ball, to mark the anniversary of opening Castle Coole to the public 60 years ago to the very day, will kick off the celebrations on 28 June 2012.

An incredible evening of fine dining and dancing is lined up as we pay tribute to the swing bands of the 1950’s and celebrate the journey which has brought Castle Coole to where it is today. Enjoy an evening drinks reception followed by a four-course fine dining experience and then dance the night away to the sound of The Bob Quick Big Band. The Bob Quick Big Band is an exciting 10 piece swing band playing reportoire from Glen Miller and The Rat Pack thru to Van Morrison and

Tom Jones. This is a night not to be missed. The following night, 29 June, takes on a different style of celebration. Come along for an unforgettable night as Queen comes to Castle Coole. Flash Harry, the most successful and adventurous Queen tribute band around will deliver hit after hit of notorious rock anthems. After a non-stop 20 years of delivering unforgettable shows in top notch venues like the Odyssey Arena and London’s Royal Albert Hall you know that Flash Harry can deliver a rock show as good as any you will see. Dance the night away to favourites ‘Don’t stop me now’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, and many

more, as Flash Harry demonstrate their energy, enthusiasm, talent, passion and pure showmanship in a tribute to one of one of the greatest rock bands in the world. The final night of the diamond celebration extravaganza concludes on 30 June when Castle Coole will come alive to the sounds of Swedish pop super group Abba, in the form of the highly acclaimed tribute group ‘Abbatastic’. Enjoy sights and sounds that Castle Coole has never seen before, get dressed up in your flares and sparkles and dance the night away as Abbatastic bring you all the greatest hits including ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘Waterloo’ and many more.

The Outlook is good for Down Royal

Down Royal Racecourse is set to unveil its latest £40k investment this summer at the Magners Derby Race Day, Saturday 23rd June, with the new balcony addition to the

Rainbow Communications Suite.

The Rainbow Communications Balcony is part of Down Royal’s continued plans to improve the hospitality offering and to bridge the gap between premium hospitality and general admission, making Down Royal the best possible venue for all budgets. The spectacular balcony, with views over the parade ring and finishing line provides further added value for the £55 hospitality package.

With attendance at Down Royal up almost by 10% in 2012, the new balcony, which can comfortably accommodate 60 racegoers, will no doubt prove to be a popular addition to one of Ireland’s best loved race courses. Mike Todd, General

Manager at Down Royal says, “The increase in attendance this year to date has been fantastic for us and is a reflection of our continued investment in the course facilities and our customer offering.

“We have worked hard this year to continually improve the completely unique racing experience at Down Royal, whether it’s our substantial landscaping projects for the grounds, or our building expansion plans. With the £4.5million investment back in 2008, £200k last year creating the Dark Horse Wine bar and Café as well as refurbishment plans to the Owners, Trainers and members bar and this additional £40k investment we are proving we

certainly never rest on our laurels. We are constantly listening to our customer’s needs and catering for them”

Mr Todd continued: “The Rainbow Communications Suite is a very popular choice for our racegoers so we wanted to build on that and showcase the panoramic views that are on offer. It’s the perfect backdrop to a great day’s racing with a decked area that overlooks the paddock”.

ULSTER LIFE TALKS TO ADAM JAFFA FROM GENTLE DENTAL, LISBURN ROAD, BELFAST.

What was your first job?

I did loads of waitering and bar work when I was younger. The first place I worked had great French cuisine, interesting customers and an eccentric Spanish manager who was either screaming or smiling. At the end of the night the whole kitchen and service staff would sit down together to eat and enjoy the craic. Good times.

What does managing a dental practice entail?

We provide everything from cosmetic dentistry to good quality general dentistry through to implants and complex work. Plus a special programme for people with dental phobia. So there is a big variety in terms of what each patient is looking for. I am the first point of contact for new patients and I liase with them as treatment progresses to make sure they are happy all the way through. The rest of the time together with my sister Lucy (she is the lead dentist here) we are thinking of ways to improve our service We want the patients to get the best results possible and to have a good experience along the way. The premises is designed to be relaxing and beautiful to be in. We have an art gallery on site so there are exhibitions and events regularly which adds colour. Its probably 50%customer care 25% organisation 10% forward planning 10% art related stuff 5%miracles -thats one a

month folks! How did you end up doing your current job?

When I first started my Dad was the lead dentist here (he has recently retired ) and it was fairly clear that there could be ways to make the experience better for both patients and the team. Then I found out that there were dental practice managers courses in the USA. I took some courses and it went from there. In 2010 Lucy and I bought the practice from Dad so there is lots of new stuff in the pipeline.

What qualifications and qualities does your job require?

I had a super trainer/mentor early in my career who was amazingly encouraging and wise (Hi Mary). She talked a lot about how good quality dentistry could help with and confidence and wellbeing and also how it is the relationship with patients that matters just as much as the results. So I think its interpersonal stuff that is most commonly useful. I have a degree which I don’t use much in work and counselling qualifications which do help me support the phobic patients. It is important to keep up to date about the technical side of dentistry through courses and reading. Apart from that I think a bit of resilience goes a long way.

Typical working day?

We start early with a team

meeting at 7.45 to make sure the day ahead goes smoothly. Patients arrive at 8am. From then on its a constant flow of working with patients as we have 4 dentists and Ruth our hygienist on the go. In the evenings we might have a team meeting or lecture or an event on in the gallery. Its a very fast paced day and I love the variety in my work. What has been the highlight of your role to date. There are lots of little highlights with individual patients because you get to know people quite well. When you see someone really confident and smiling with their results there is a ripple of pride amongst the team who work very hard. People don’t always see it initially but modern dentistry can be quite exciting due to the possibilities of the treatments. So there are definitely hugs and high fives on occasion when a patient is really over the moon. More recently with our brother Jonny we have started redesigning the practice and gallery. Its turning out to be a lovely environment to share with patients which is great.

What is the most rewarding thing about your job?

We had a lady in recently who was not confident with her teeth at all. There was some advanced gum disease but she had been too afraid to deal with it for a long time. Her teeth were falling out gradually one by one. After a good deal of discussion and planning we found a way to get treatment done gently and

42

Page 43: Ulster Life June 2012

without freaking her out and she is now mid way through treatment and feeling much more in control of the situation, less worried and the results are coming. She has done something she probably thought she never could manage and we are getting rid of lot of bacteria that are not good for her general health and the gums are responding. New teeth are going into the gaps and the smile will be rebuilt to suit her. That kind of moment is very satisfying.

Have you any new projects coming up?

Our free Open Nights have been going well since the start of the year. They are a chance of for people to check out what is on offer. Things change so fast in dentistry that often people are not aware of what is really possible and of course there are always questions about prices and payment options. The before and after photos of our patients plus some explanation and a Q and A session usually covers all bases. At the end of the evening if people have private questions or want to book an appointment thats no

problem. What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

My Granny was a fantastic, caring woman. She was a great one for sayings and often quoted “A thing of beauty is a joy forever” by Keats. I think that has stuck with me. On a different tip my Dad used to say “Man has to sit for long time with open mouth before roast duck flies in!”

Ms. MaloneBT9s PREMIER FASHIONISTA

SOLVES YOUR FASHION WOES.

Dear Ms Malone,Since the weather has gotten warmer I have noticed many women flaunting ruffles, lace, and other very girly styles. I love the subtle sexiness of the look, but am a bit worried that I would look too young when trying to pull it off and end up looking instead like one of my daughter’s baby dolls! Can you suggest a way to embrace this soft girly look without looking childish?Loving Lace Dear Lace,We’ve all seen them—the 40 year old woman who clearly missed the memo that getting dressed from their daughters’ wardrobes is anything but sexy! The very sexy look you’ve described is the French romantic trend, which is inspired by those gorgeous period French boudoir bedrooms you’ve lusted over in magazines. The trend takes luxurious elements like silk and lace from the duvet to your dresses. Features of the look include lace, intricate detailing, corset bodices with boning, and soft satins. Paired with the washed-out pastel palette of the spring/summer catwalk and bare legs, this trend is producing loads of ethereal and romantic looks. To make sure you stay on-trend without looking like your daughter (or worse—her dolls), try browsing the racks of French Connection on Ferryquay Street, Derry and Cornmarket, Belfast. Their collection features a gorgeous selection of French-inspired pieces that are perfect for a romantic stroll down the Champs-Élysées or a sophisticated night out. This elegant Great Plains Daisy Lace Skirt, £65, paired with a simple top like the Ballerina Jersey Tee, £20, is under-stated but amazingly sexy!

BT9s PREMIER FASHIONISTASOLVES YOUR FASHION WOES.

Dear Ms Malone,My husband loves to play golf during the summer, and I tag along to sun myself on the greens. A long morning on the course often turns into an afternoon of lunch and drinks at the club with friends. While the men don’t mind going straight from the golf course to the bar, the women there always look perfectly prim and proper and I feel like a sore thumb in my golf gear. Do you have any suggestions for functional sportswear that will take me from the course to the club without getting me black-listed?Country Club Chic Dear Chic,It is an old wives’ tale that athletic clothing cannot be stylish! If time doesn’t allow for a post-round wardrobe change, why not glam up your sporty ensemble to take it straight from game time to lunchtime? GOLFINO at the OUTLET Banbridge offers a fabulous line of women’s sportswear that is both stylish and functional for sport and leisure with a fabulous discount included. Whether golf or tennis is your sport of choice GOLFINO’s vest tops, shorts, sport skirts, and trousers are a stylish answer to your lunching dilemma. I love this sporty outfit worn here by Tiffany including a GOLFINO Blue Stripe Vest, £63, Red Sweater Vest, £66.50, Blue Slim Capris, £52.50, and Blue Visor, £14. The nautical elements like the blue and red colours and striped collar are very on-trend even off the greens, and the stretch material of the capris ensure that you are on your game without having to wear baggy, unflattering shorts or trousers. Glam up your look by swapping golf shoes for classic heels and big sunglasses and add a punch of colour with a neck scarf—very Audrey Hepburn!

Dear Ms Malone,I’ve recently had a baby and unfortunately I have not been able to get my wobbly tummy under control in time for swimwear season! I have been dieting and working out feverishly, but still don’t feel very confident in belly-bearing swimsuits. Any advice for covering up at the beach without looking like a granny under layers and layers of ruffles and sarongs?Bathing Beauty Dear Bathing Beauty,Looking like a beached whale is a concern for many women regardless of how long it’s been since they had their babies. Skimpy suits just don’t offer the support needed for curves, and the suits that offer coverage are usually lacking in style. With the emergence of curvy bombshells like Christina Hendricks of TV’s Mad Men, designers are starting to catch on that curvy women, too, can be beach babes. A great style to grab onto that will enhance curves and play down imperfections is the 50s pinup style. Think busty, curvy, and bold, with a feminine edge. Kelly Brook’s new womenswear collection at New Look offers very sexy 50s inspired looks that are sure to turn heads on the beach. The playful polka-dotted Kelly Brook Spot Swimwear Playsuit, £29.99, features a halter neck and would be incredibly functional for chasing after a toddler on the beach and covering up a not-so-flat tummy but also offers a bit of retro glam with its bold pattern, high waist, and sweetheart neckline. And who says yummy mummys must wear bikinis?

As I’ve just celebrated my wonderful wedding, I want to write about brides and how to make sure you look and feel wonderful on the most one of the biggest days of your life…

The build-up…

Getting married is such an exhilarating time – from that all-important engagement right up until we say the ‘I do’s’. All the months of planning, dieting, stressing, researching, trials (and tribulations!) coupled with the excitement and anticipation.Everyone wants to look their best, from the bride right through to the bridesmaids and mother of the bride. Skin deep

Firstly, it’s all about amazing skin, a bride must exude the a wonderful natural-looking radiance... I firmly believe that this can only truly be achieved by the CACI Ultimate Facial, which is the UK’s

most advanced non-surgical skin treatment. This wonderfully revolutionising facial is a firm favourite with the A-List set, including Madonna, and uses a roller across the face which transmits tiny electrical impulses to stimulate muscle tone and enhance skin tissue, integrating microdermabrasion with light therapy. It lifts and tones, targeting wrinkles, cellulite and acne –it hydrates, exfoliates and can reduce stretch marks – all using one machine. I can honestly say the results are very dramatic, and the treatment is already proving a major hit with brides up and down the country –as far away as Dublin. A course of six Caci facials will set you well on your way to achieving flawless radiant skin. Home care

It’s all well and good having lovely salon treatments, but a bride must not forget her home care…

As Ulster Life’s top beauty columnist, Ruth Ellen Logan, Proprietor of the multi-award winning Beauty Company, Belfast celebrates her nuptials; she shares

with us her secrets to looking flawless on your big day…

54

Page 55: Ulster Life June 2012

55

Page 56: Ulster Life June 2012

I always recommend that brides use a routine at home which will complement the Caci treatments and keep the skin looking flawless. The Pure Radiance Cleanser by Akademikliniken ( a cosmeceutical brand from Stockholm which is exclusive to The Beauty Company) coupled with Dermalogica Daily Microfiliant and finished off with Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Creamis a wonderful routine. If the bride is in her 30s like moi, she will benefit from Dermalogica Overnight Repair Serum, which is Dermalogica’s latest development in nourishing anti-ageing, packed full of anti-oxidant goodies.

Body-liscious

With the face fully prepped and ready for lights, camera, action. The beautiful bride must not forget her body…Exfoliated, moisturised and of course, a subtle spray tan for the big day.

At The Beauty Company we simply love the Vita Liberata Spray tan – the X Factor’s official choice – it is not only odourless and streak-free – but is subtle and a gorgeous natural colour.

Lashes galore

No self-respecting bride would leave it to mascara for fluttering eyes on her wedding day. 3D lashes area must. They not only open the eye up with a natural lash extension, but they add definition and a fullness that mascara simply cannot achieve. And the best bit – they last up to four weeks, meaning that your new husband will see you looking at your best – morning – noon and night! Aileen at The Beauty Company is the brides lash expert of choice, in her safe hands you will be fluttering all the way up the aisle.

Kiss and make-up

And lastly, that all-important wedding make up... My advice is, stick with long-lasting foundations to match your skin tone, blushers in soft hues, and go easy on the eyes. Be careful with trends, you want your look to be timeless ... Beautiful skin and sparkling eyes ... what more could a bride ask for. And of course, if you’re not brave enough to do your own, call upon our in-house make-up expert Felicity and Amy at The Beauty Company. To book any of the treatments mentioned in this article, call

The wedding ceremony was at the City Hall and afterwards the couple couldn’t resist a ride on the carousel.

A comedy Belfast tour bus guided the wedding party through the city streets with interesting facts and chuckles.

Reception was at AM:PM in Upper Arthur Street in the Cabaret club where the couple danced the night away.

We have so many properties on our books which are ideal for investors wanting to buy now as a long-term investment for the future. If you have the funds to do so – property is undoubtedly the best investment choice at the moment, and there has never been a better time to buy.Capital values of properties are as low as they are going to get, interest rates are also at a historical low and demand for rental property still outstrips supply. The reason for the rental market being so buoyant at the moment is that the quality of accommodation available is so good – a better quality of accommodation attracts a better calibre of tenant – increasing demand. R

For those buying a cheaper property to ‘do it up’ before letting it out shouldn’t do it blind. Do your research into the property. What condition is it in? Is it gas or oil? What state is the heating and electrics in? Do you need a team of experts in? This all costs money, so factor that in when you are doing your budget. Don’t assume you can do everything yourself.

There is demand for both – but don’t go to town. Keep colours neutral and use furniture that will wear well. Stipulate whether you allow pets or not – you don’t want your leather sofa scratched by little Oscar’s paws.

This is another common misconception. Don’t assume you can rent the property out yourself. Always use a reputable agent – it can save you a mountain of problems in the long run. An agent will handle all the viewings, carry out reference checks on any interested tenants, manage and formalise the tenancy agreement and advise you on the process throughout.

This is essential. It isn’t enough to ask the tenant to take out insurance. It is your property, so protect it. Landlord Insurance can be acquired by chatting to the team at John Minnis, who will advise you on the best rates around.

A S I There are so many low price properties on the market at the moment – in all areas of the country. Always get a survey carried out on any property you plan to buy – this will ensure that your purchase is a sound investment and won’t end up being a money pit. Investors can expect to make a yield of 7-10% per year on top of the capital growth. This level of return would be difficult to find in any other investment. Property purchasers will see capital growth in the medium and long term making buy-to-let an investment where the yield is two-fold.

Damien Hirst has rarely been out of the press for the last couple of months. It’s all about ‘the most famous living artist in Britain’, in the words of the Tate. Their retrospective is the largest body of Hirst’s work to be shown in the UK and shows how strongly he divides opinion. Love him or hate him, he sure knows how to make money, a practice that started at college. Charles Darwent of the Independent said ‘Young British Artists were savvy. They knew about marketing. If curators refused them exhibitions, they curated their own: when no gallery would represent them, they opened shops and sold their work themselves.’ With a market crying out for something new, and benefactors such as Charles Saatchi giving it credibility, Young British Art was at that time a response to a market opportunity.

I visited the Tate Modern the week before Hirst’s show opened. The signs were up and frenetic activity could be seen inside but I was spared the decision as to whether or not to part with my £14 and make the various parties even richer. I was there preparing for my exhibition with London based artist Darren MacPherson. The exhibition, ‘Conception’, is in two parts and works on the premise of two artists, two cultures, two cities, two mediums.

Part one is in June, staged in London where Darren is based, in a new gallery which is part of a working factory in Greenwich. Part two will be in September and will be in my home town of Belfast. Darren has a growing reputation as a contemporary figurative artist whose acrylic and spray paint

works are bold and full of colour. He has exhibited extensively in London and Los Angeles and his style is the perfect foil for my dark sculpture. Of course with part one being London, it will be anything but traditional ceramics, expect to see piercings, latex and hosiery amongst other things as part of the work!

Final touches are being done for my installation (pictured) for the Warning! Exhibition which opens on 25th May and for an outdoor installation in the Walled Garden in Bangor Castle which opens on 9th June. This is a group exhibition consisting of sculptors and artists from North Down and beyond including Lee Boyd, Sharon Regan and Andrew Cooke and is to coincide with Jubilee celebrations.

I have not had much time to explore exhibitions this month, but one I wanted to see was Deepa Mann-Kler’s collaboration with photographer, Aidan Monaghan, who worked together to produce a series of photographs that respond to the history and experience of the former Maze/Long Kesh site. It ran alongside Martin Lynch’s play, Chronicles Of Long Kesh, in the Grand Opera House. Deepa explained to me that, not having grown up in Northern Ireland, she was able to offer a very balanced view of a locally contentious subject.

Lasty, if you get the chance, catch my fellow Warning! artist Ciaran Magill’s solo show, Spooky Hypnotic at the Down Arts Centre during May.

Dee CraigBorn in Belfast, David Dee Craig is a self taught visual artist who mainly practiced his craft in and around community based projects working right across the province. Over the years the experiences gained within these projects has provided Dee with an excellent platform and helped develop him into the artist he is today. Dee feels very strongly that having such close relationships within the community has provided him with an invaluable insight into exactly who these people are and what they really appreciate as art. Dee was extremely privileged to be presented with the coveted top forty under forty award for his work and has been commissioned to complete projects at home with the Ulster Museum and as far a field as

Israel, Spain and America, working with the Smithsonian Institute. Dee continues to dedicate a huge amount of his time to the community projects he is involved in, although within the last two years he has also become one of Northern Ireland’s most collectibe artists after a number of extremely successful exhibitions inside and outside the city. Dee is currently working on his brand new range entitled ‘Linenopolis Millies & Doffers’ telling the incredible story of Belfast’s strength & industry during an extremely difficult period in history. ‘Linenopolis’ will have it’s official launch in Cafe Vaudeville on the 28th June 2012 where everyone is welcome to come along and view this stunning range.

Ulster life gives you an exclusive sneak peek at new works from Dee Craigand his latest collection “Linenopolis : Millies & Doffers”

Andrew Gordon is an Independent Financial Adviser and owner of Ag Wealth Planning based in Belfast. Ag Wealth Planning advises both individuals and

businesses on all aspects of financial planning including, mortgages, pensions, investments, protection and tax advice. Ag Wealth Planning is not tied to any single provider and offers financial solutions from the whole of the market.

What was your first job?

After graduating from university with a law degree in 1997 I moved to London. I worked for Cheltenham & Gloucester in the Temple Bar area providing mortgage and investment advice to mainly solicitors and barristers. Whilst I enjoyed the job I realised that I wasn’t quite ready to make London my home and returned to Belfast after about a year.

How did you end up doing your current job?

When I worked in London I was dealing with mortgage brokers and financial advisers on a regular basis and I decided I would prefer to be doing what they were doing! I came home to Belfast and started an internship style job with a small financial advisory practice in Stranmillis while studying for my financial planning qualifications. Since then, I have worked as an IFA for several different firms before I made the decision in 2007 to set up my own business and I haven’t looked back since!

What qualifications and qualities does your job require?

All financial advisers are required

to achieve a benchmark financial planning qualification and can then choose to specialise in certain areas. We are then required, like many professions, to demonstrate an on-going level of continued professional development often through further study. A university qualification is not compulsory but I have found my law degree has stood me in good stead when examining certain estate planning and taxation issues for clients.

Qualifications aside, I feel the most important quality to have is the ability to listen and digest what the client actually wants and - most importantly - needs.

What has been the highlight of your role to date?

I have always admired people who run their own business so the highlight has got to be deciding to go it alone, and then actually setting up my own business.

What is the most rewarding thing about your job?

The job that I provide for the majority of clients at the moment is making sure that their pension is performing well and their pension provider is not taking too much in on-going management charges.

This part of my job is fulfilling as it is helping to secure a comfortable retirement for a client. However the most rewarding thing for me is helping first time buyers get a mortgage to buy their first home. Helping clients achieve better investment returns is all well and good but knowing that a couple is genuinely happy because they can buy their first home together makes you feel great.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

Work hard at everything you do but always remember to stop and smell the flowers along the way.

Have you any hobbies?

I’m a typical bloke and love sport. I don’t play so much any more but I like to stay active and try to get to the gym about five times a week.
