Letter from the Editor Wow has this fulfilled year passed so quickly? So much has happened in 2011 that we can be happy about. From winning interschool’s once again, all the balls especially the AMAZING matric ball, the new learner council and head prefects, new committees of all groups in PV such as interact, GIG and of course ultimate PV. I’m so proud to be part of this magazine and see how it has grown just over the past few months. 2012 has so much installed for us and I can’t wait to be part of it. I would like to wish good luck to everyone for this year but especially to the entire grade 11’s going to matric and the little ones going to grade 8. I would like to thank my committee for all their hard work, it’s been tough but we managed to get through it. Many talented people have crossed my path and I am thankful to have met them and am great full for their commitment. Stay PV+ and let 2012 be wicked.

ULTIMATE REVIEW

Page 8: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

MOVIE Serena Paver takes a look at this summer’s hottest movies.

NEW YEAR’S EVE Starring: Jessica Biel, Lea Michele, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sienna Miller, Ashton Kutcher, Katherine Heigl, Zac Efron, Halle Berry, Robert De Niro and more Directed by: Garry Marshall Genre: Romantic-comedy

This Valentine’s Day style movie intertwines an assemblage of different storylines revolving around New Year and brings in some of the biggest stars in Hollywood.

New Year’s Eve follows the stories of characters such as: a women who is in charge of the ‘New Year Time Square Ball Drop’ but is afraid of heights; a pregnant couple who are vying to have the first baby of the new year; a couple trapped in an elevator who start out hating each other but end up kissing; a mother and daughter who have a rocky relationship etcetera, etcetera.

In the true heart-warming-but-completely-pointless-movie way it will all end well with the antagonists getting what they deserve and the good people getting a happily-ever-after ending.

“…a couple trapped in an elevator who start out hating each other but end up kissing…”

Including sickening sweet storylines and cliché characters, this movie promises to be annoying, but still enjoyable (not unlike the other movies Marshall has directed, including Valentine’s Day and He’s Just Not That into You). Perfect for a date (when you are not planning on watching the movie anyway) or a girls’ night. Still, packed with Hollywood A-listers, most of them attractive, the movie will be a crowd pleaser. ▪

BOOK REVIEW Need a book for the

hammock this summer? Megan Beaumont reviews the perfect relaxed read.

Froth on the Cappuccino by Maeve Haran. Sorry boys but this one is for the girls. After a long year of serious head-to-desk work one seriously needs something that would be a tad mindless to fill the void. During the summer one needs a book that is not challenging or exhausting. It is holiday after all.

A while back, I got given a book called Froth on the Cappuccino, mildly confused by the title, I decided it looked harmless and I dived in. I am so very glad that I did – in a page-a-day style format; this delightful book focuses on the small pleasures in life that we, as women, can all relate to.

From the smell of clean

linen to the wondrous mystery of the feeling you get in an airport, this book has it all. Although the author is in her forties and is married with children, she is incredibly easy to relate to and makes you notice the magic in seemingly mundane things of everyday life. ▪

I certainly recommend it for those flop-in-the-hammock days. A huge plus is that you can put it down, forget about it, and pick it up again the next day – finding it just as pleasing.

I’ve realized over a long time that the same good, hot seller tracks get over played, to a point that they get killed. Well some good and bad news. The good news is there is new music coming out; bad news is that those songs will begin the repeat cycle again. So it’s almost having the cake but not eating it too. All I can say is, there are some artists I am seriously looking forward to having new album releases! Here’s a slight sneak peak. Leona Lewis

with Hurt: The EP With new songs such as: Hurt, Iris and Colorblind to be released in sure it’s going to be another knockout! Rumour has it, some songs will be pop, but by judging by the song names just revealed I don’t think so.

50 Cent- The return of the heartless Monster. With songs such as: Heartless monster, Don’t front, Heatwave, Fire, Guns for sale and many more… Something tells me a message shall be revealed. Let’s hope 50 Cent is back and back to stay!

2012 ALBUM RELEASES By Megan Soule

MUSIC

Page 11: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa’s – Mac and Devin go to high school. With songs such as: Smoking’ On, I get lifted and That good, Lets go study and French inhale and many more to come, this album should be a killer! Here’s another one for the rappers, lovers and haters!

Leonard Cohen’s Old ideas With songs such as: Going home, Amen, Show me the places, lullaby, banjo and more on the new album, this is sure to be a good one! I myself am super excited for this album to be released, very little information has been given on it, but what I can say is that if you were one of this jamming solidly to memories and day ‘n night or if you were one of those lamming on the couch to falling star ft Florence and the machine or Pursuit Of Happiness ft MGMT the you will sure to love the new album coming out!

“…All I can say is, there are some artists I am seriously looking forward to having new album releases!”

Page 12: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

The Chromatics with Kill for love I myself have not heard a lot about them, but doing some research I see they started in 2003, creating lo-fi and punk music, There new album has songs such as: into the black, Kill for love, Back from the grave, The streets will never look the same and many more, this I will definitely look out for and listen to!

Lana Del Rey with: Born to die. Not much info has been given about this album but judging by her new song hitting it big in MTV, it’s going to be something to look forward to! This is especially for all of the old school lovers of all ages; I myself look forward to it!

And finally, Kid Cudi WZRD With the last album I am reviewing, I thought I’d tone it down with something laid back, sentimental and just plain awesome, yes this is the new album from the Cranberries. With songs such as: Conduct, Tomorrow, Fire and Soul, Roses, stop many more and me on the new album this shall be one rewarding CD!•

CELEBRITY PROFILE Jamie Campbell Bower

Singer? Actor? Model? Musician? Jamie Campbell Bower seems to have a lot going for him. Yet we still ask: Where is he?

Since his first big break in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, in which he played a young sailor who sang the song of love, Johanna (Yes – that is the one that stole all of our hearts), he has been almost nonexistent. His few roles have been small and unfulfilling – the silent and creepy Caius Volturi in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the two-second long role of ‘Young Grindelwald’ in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and other equally small parts. His fans are left wondering: When will we see him again?

Well time to wonder no longer. Recently, Jamie has been given the part of Jace Wayland in the movie version of the much revered The Mortal Instruments series. Fans of the book (myself included) were worried that he would not fit the role of hunky, evil fighting, tortured, attractive, cooler-than-Edward-Cullen Jace, yet Cassandra Clare (writer of the series) has assured us that he is perfect for the role. “I am thoroughly, totally, extremely, and utterly delighted. [His audition] was unbelievable. He was Jace, down to the snark, the vulnerability, the humour and the romantic side,” she writes in her blog. She also assured us that he would ‘buff-up’ for the role (sigh of relief).

Born in London, 1988, Bower has had a love for performing and for the spotlight from a very young age. As a model, lead singer of the band ‘The Darling Buds’ and actor; he throws himself headfirst into any situation. A man who truly loves what he does – and appreciates every opportunity to do it. We wish him and his new fiancée (Bonnie Wright, Harry Potter co-star) all the best for the future and wait impatiently for The Mortal Instruments to finally hit the big screen.

NEW SEASON,

NEW

TREND

Scores of designers have flooded our

minds with delicious designs and

ingenious innovations though we had to maintain a strong focus to be able to bring forth to you the trends for the

Summer seasons.

If the New York shows have taught us anything for this summer, it’s that

1. Yellow is last year’s white,

2. Whip out your lace from last years season and re-vamp it to suit the occasion

By Rozahn van Schalkwyk

Page 15: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

The new prim: The silhouettes of the 1950s and 1960s make a strong return, with shapes that accentuate curves and foster femininity. A hip-hugging sheath dress with a below-the-knee hem is the ultimate in hourglass dressing, while the full circle skirt and dress remain at the core of the trend.

These days age is just a

number – veteran

supermodels are

returning to the

catwalk to remind us that true style has

no barriers.

THE 70S ARE BACK!

THE 70S ARE BACK!

Page 16: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

Tribal print has been managing to make its way through every season, though this Spring/Summer will see an even greater explosion of this trend:

Plenty ‘o Print a Fashion Trend for The Daring Fashionistas

One of my favorite hot fashion trends for Spring-Summer 2011 is the prevalence of prints, and not just tiny little florals, like seasons past.

No, this season’s prints are bold, from lush botanicals to bold animal prints to pretty polka dots. They’re so much fun to wear… but be careful! Only one print piece per ensemble, please!

“…They’re so much

fun to wear… but

be careful!”

TOP LACE TOPS

Layers of Lace One of The Sexiest Fashions Trends:

There’s nothing quite as romantic and feminine as lace, and this season, it’s everywhere, from Dolce&Gabbana to Ralph Lauren.

No, it’s not new. But, like all trends that span multiple seasons, it has evolved. Lace influences for Summer 2011 are more to the classic side with quality antique-style fabrics the key to the trend.

Pick one stellar piece,

like a blouse or a frilly skirt or even short flirty shorts and make it the focal point of a retro-inspired, frothy feminine outfit! High waist will help to create an even more feminine look.

Some of the laced shorts and skirts have a bow; don’t shy away from it thinking it will be too much. It’s just dramatic enough to make a fashion statement without being too much. Throw on a pair of black cat eye sunglasses and a few long strings of pearls (nothing wrong with fake), and voila! You are all ready to pull off this fabulous summer fashion trend!

“…Any shade will do, but yellow is slithering its way

back into the Summer hues of

choice…”

Shades of butter yellow and bright

yellow have significantly had a strong influence on runways across continents in the last couple of weeks proving to be one of Summer 2011′s main colours.

Style Tip: Avoid looking like Big Bird by keeping things simple when it comes to this color. You can definitely take a risk and play with certain styles and get away with it but for most, I'd say - no frills, definitely no feathers and no complicated twists.

Hello yellow

Page 19: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

Here's a quick guide to wearing yellow for your skin tone:

Pale: Dark yellow, mustard yellow, and very pale yellows. Avoid neon-bright and primary colour yellow, which will only make you look paler.

Medium and Olive: Go for opposite ends of the spectrum. You should reach for lemon yellows, bold yellows, and can even go for super bright yellow which will make your skin glow.

Dark: Reach for those golds. You also have immense luck because you can pretty much wear whatever yellow you'd like, and look fabulous. The only yellow I'd avoid is neon; it may look too jarring since it'll be a sharp contrast to your skin tone.

Page 20: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

Colour SPLASH Worn in one

head-to-toe hue or in boldly clashing combinations, lush colour is summer’s hottest style story.

“The easy take on this trend?

Pair brights with black or

contrast shades of any

colour.” – LUCINDA

CHAMBERS

Page 21: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

STYLE TIP: break

traditional colour-wheel rules – blue plus green

and red plus pink are desirable

contrasting combinations

this spring.

Page 22: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

These can make for a perfect "in between" look, for example if you're going to a party but you're not sure whether you should dress up or dress down, a jumpsuit can fit either occasion depending on how you accessorize it!

Jumpsuits & playsuits: They’re something of a yoyo trend: one season they’re in, the next season they’re out.

Making a comeback from last spring/summer, jumpsuits and jumpers are back again, reinterpreted to fuse in many of the season’s other fashion trends.

Choose a jumpsuit with an open neckine, shoulder straps, or some sort of bareness to the top half of the outfit . We are

looking to create some length and

balance here.

The flowier, loose-fitting styles will look better on girls with fewer curves, while curvier girls should stick to the more structured, tailored styles.

“…one season they’re in, the next season they’re out…”

Page 23: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

J’adore stripes Stripes: Stripes are a dominant

part of any summer season, though usually, year on year, featuring a

variation on the theme.

Summer 2011 sees stripes with an unsurprising

nautical dominance –

but it’s a dominance

inspired by other key summer 2011 fashion trends.•

Listen to your lifeguards By Dalibo Furnell

Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a Lifeguard? Or have you ever wanted to be one? I am currently an active lifeguard, so I took the liberty of telling you more about it.

Becoming a Lifeguard: If you are a good swimmer that loves being around people, you may be interested in learning how to become a lifeguard. With the proper training and certification, you will be out working on your tan and helping those in need before you know it. There are a few certifications that you can consider. 1. Junior Lifeguard Award This is applicable for 14 and 15 year old candidates and requires you to swim 400m in a swimming pool in 9min. You are also required to do a ‘200m run- 200m swim- 200m run’ in the ocean in under 10min. During the course we will cover First Aid training, rescue techniques and all the duties that are expected of a junior lifeguard. 2. Lifeguard Award Minimum age: 16 on day of assessment. This award requires candidates to swim 400m in a swimming pool in 8min. You are also required to do a ‘200m run- 300m swim- 200m run’ in the ocean in under 10min. During the course we will cover First Aid training, rescue techniques and all the duties that are expected of a lifeguard. 3. Qualifying Certificate (QC) Minimum age 16, requirements as per Lifeguard Award but without the practical water work.

The cost is as follows: Juniors 14-18 Examination including your handbook: R 215.00 Membership to the club: R 190.00 Subs for the year: R 200.00 Charges: R 20.00 Total: R 625.00 Seniors 19 and older Examination including your handbook: R 215.00 Membership to the club: R 190.00 Subs for the year: R 230.00 Charges: R 20.00 Total: R 655.00

Take note if you are already a member of the Strand Surf Life Saving Club you do not need to pay the R 190.00 Membership fee I know it seems like much at first, but it is actually a really good deal. You will also receive basic kit and attire after the course. It is not a bad price at all , it is just to get you started. For more info on the course, contact: Tammy Carter-Smith (Tamsin) 084 823 7797 On facebook or email [email protected] or Shandor Cyvlan at [email protected]

Page 25: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

What else does lifesaving include? -Competitions (including western province and SA’s ) What many people do not know is that we actually compete against other lifesaving clubs. The competitions are based on a point system and just like in any other - the teams with the highest scores win and if you do well, you could place and win a medal. In my opinion, competitions are the best part of the year. There are different events you can take part in: long runs (3km), 100m sand sprints as well as sprint relay, torpedo boy rescue, craft rescue, ski rescue, box-line or reel recue, flags and even our own iron man/women. Western province championships usually takes place in Camps Bay or Clifton or Big Bay_ these locations aren’t always set .We alternate the location of South African Championships each year- Durban, Port Elizabeth, Western Province and so it repeats. It is the perfect opportunity to meet people as well as take part and succeed in a different kind of sport. It is a lot of fun! This is not compulsory, however, so if you do not like competing, you do not have to. -Money Yes, we get paid. This is how it works, there are two types of duty: Voluntary duty (once every two weeks in season, this is with your squad and is compulsory. You do not get paid) and Pro duty (you book days you want to work: public holidays, weekdays in school holidays and Saturday mornings half day. You are paid for pro duty. It is, at the moment, R220 per 8 hour day which is from 10:00-18:00 and R110 for half day which is from 10:00-14:00. This is obviously in season.) The season begins from around October/November until April. We do not have any duties during the Winter season. -Skills The skills and knowledge you gain from being a lifeguard are indispensable and will be carried with you throughout your whole life. You learn about various kinds of rescuing, working a walkie-talkie radio, signals, first aid and the ocean. You also learn plenty of patience, how to work with people and how to remain calm in compromising and dangerous situations. -The vibe Honestly, I don’t know what I would do in my life if I were not a lifeguard, because the family feel and camaraderie between the lifeguards is irreplaceable. To be down at the beach, soaking up the sun, bonding with your fellow lifeguards, observing the ocean and serving our community gives great satisfaction (this sometimes excludes the dark dull, unpopulated, windy and cold days we have to endure).

Page 26: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

Here’s what some of PV and ex-PV’s lifeguards have to say: Deon Grabe (in pv)

1. Why did you become a lifeguard?

It was a dream my father had, he wanted both my sister and me to be lifeguards. He became one shortly before he passed away. I think that is what motivates me.

2. What is the most exciting part lifesaving?

Exciting - swimming in the sea, I love swimming.

3. What was your most memorable event or experience during your lifesaving duties so far?

Responding to an incident where a kite surfer had taken off from the beach and let go of his kite, his ankle was completely broken. It was really scary.

4. Why would you motivate others to become lifeguards?

It's just another way to get involved in the community and to lend a helping hand.

Johnathan Guy( ex pv ,matric 2009)

1. Why did you become a lifeguard?

I've always thought saving a life is the most precious thing a person could do! And you’re required to go to the beach -Awesome!

2. What is the most exciting part as well as most unexciting part about lifesaving?

Meeting new faces and feeling like a BOSS sitting up top and watching everyone! Unexciting, actually working...jokes! I guess being down there on bad days and doing chores at times, like sweeping.

3. Why would you motivate others to become lifeguards?

You get paid for being at the beach, apart from voluntary duty of course. And it teaches you responsibility and teamwork when it comes to competitions. Also yo u meet interesting people (that have no choice to stay with you for the 8 hour shift- so you get to know them) so u make tight friendships!

5. Give a quote or comment either concerning or not concerning lifeguarding that you would like to share.

There's no room for uncertainty.

Page 27: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

Jessica Micklem (ex pv, matric 2010)

1. Why did you become a lifeguard?

I started doing nippers (lifeguard training for people under the age of 13) when I was 9 years old as my mother wanted us to learn about the ocean and I really loved swimming and body boarding. At the time some of my best friends were doing it with me so it was a chance to swim and see my friends every Sunday. 2. What is the most unexciting part about lifesaving? The most unexciting is a windy day when there's no one on the beach and the weather is horrible but you still have to sit outside for the 10 crazy swimmers out there. 3. What was your most memorable event or experience during your lifesaving duties so far? A day this year. I actually had to save someone. Isabel, my sister, and I had decided to come to duty early as we had heard they were struggling and there were many people on the beach. As we arrived Those on duty told Isabel she was Squad Leader and had to man base while they ran down the beach to go and rescue 3 guys stuck in a rip tide. Then before we could sort anything out a lady was shouting at me telling me that a boy was drowning directly in front of the lifesaving club house. I didn't even have my costume on properly and completely forgot to take a resuscitate or whistle. I just took a torpedo buoy and ran down to the water's edge. By the time I got there, a body boarder was helping the boy but there were 2 other adult men shouting for help. I ran into the water only to find the sand drop away about 2m into the water, from then on I had to swim. I arrived there and allowed the one guy to hang on to the torpedo buoy. Once he had a grip he became totally calm. He was just freaking out that he couldn't swim. Luckily for me, a lifeguard who was no longer part of the club but happened to be on the beach that day had entered the water and helped the other man who was struggling.

Page 28: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

Mark Roberts( ex pv, matric 2009)

1.Why did you become a lifeguard?

For the chance to help others that cannot help themselves. To safe guard the shoreline.

2. What was your most memorable event or experience during your lifesaving duties so far?

The most memorable experience for me was 2 seasons ago on January 5, where an elder man was drowning and me and someone else rescued the unconscious patient and performed CPR till the medics arrived. He survived. I will never forget his face.

3. Give a quote or comment either concerning or not concerning life guarding that you would like to share.

Well that would be our motto, "ALWAYS BE VIGILANT".

We swam to shore. Once it was all over I realise how many things I could have done that would have been better but I guess one learns from experience. I have never in my life seen such bad currents at Strand as I saw that day. There were 11 rescues in total throughout the day. 4. Why would you motivate others to become lifeguards? It is a wonderful world to become part of. There is just about something for everyone, first aid, socials, being able to give back to the community, competitive sport and making the beach a safer place for everyone. There is so much to offer but one doesn't have to do all of it. For example, I am not a competitive person and don't like competitions but I enjoy the duties. Also, it is a lovely holiday job and pays well. 5. Give a quote or comment either concerning or not concerning life guarding that you would like to share. The skills you learn from lifesaving can give you a head start in today's world whether it’s applying for a bursary, getting a job, meeting people or just finding an enjoyable hobby.

Page 29: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

Why should you listen to your lifeguards? We have gone through a lot of time, examinations and training to

be qualified to look out for you. What many people don’t always know is that without us, there

would be many more people being swept out to sea, drowning, being attacked and being injured. If there were no lifeguards, and a misfortune happened- there would be no immediate assistance to help you.

I think that people tend to forget to appreciate that we give our time to make sure they are safe. Yes, from time to time accidents happen that are beyond our control, but we try our best to ensure your absolute safety.

We risk our lives at times to save or help people. Please, listen to your lifeguards, when we ask you to move to the swimmer’s area (between the red and yellow flags), do so, because if you are swept out to sea because you did not listen, then we are the ones that have to save you. Over and out.•

‘n Braai is ‘n enrstige ding, benader dus jou aankope ook so. Twak man! So, as jy nie vleis ken nie, vra jou slagter. 2. Daar is nie ‘n ding soos te ‘n warm vuur nie. Dikker snitte vir braai! 3. Steak sonder vet is nie ‘n steak nie. 5. Een slaai by ‘n braai is genoeg. 6. Indien nie, sê so! Hoe anders moet hy leer? 10. As jy jou pap saam met ‘n braai met melk en suiker eet, is jy wanaangepas en skreeu jy seker vir die All blacks. Vra almal by die braai om jou teen jou kop te klap, maar dit sal seker ook nie eers help ni

There’s a BLUE MOON rriissiinngg By Matthew Hurlow

Red and blue. Both strong, powerful colours. Colours associated with royalty.

Red for passion. Blue for strength.

Beautiful colours on their own, but when they met in Manchester on the 23rd of October this year, it was

not pretty (for United fans at least).

Page 33: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

Just like it is difficult for the eye to focus on red and blue at the same time, in recent times it has become increasingly difficult to separate these two teams. The latest derby however made separating them easy. A 6 –1 rout of United by City is very convincing.

After 35 years’ wait, Manchester City relied on their money mercenaries to finally get their hands on some silverware in the form of the 2010/11 FA Cup. This lead to a place in the FA Community Shield, a traditional pre-season game involving the winner of the FA Cup and the winner of the Barclays Premier League.

“…It lifted United fan’s

and player’s spirits and provided a wonderful curtain-raiser to the Premier League…”

City carried a two nil lead at

half time compliments of wonderful goals from Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko. But, as so often happens, a spirited and somewhat fortunate United comeback turned the game on its head, with a goal from Chris Smalling and a Nani brace propelling the Red Devils to a 3 – 2 win.

It lifted United fan’s and player’s spirits and provided a wonderful curtain-raiser to the Premier League. But did it deflate “noisy neighbours” City’s confidence? Not at all. The Mancunian teams both went on to have their best starts to the Premier League that they have ever experienced. City kicked off their campaign with a 4 – 0 domination of new-boys Swansea, while United inflicted a spectacular 8 – 2 defeat on Arsenal.

It seemed though, that both teams

were in cruise control, and were saving energy for the much anticipated derby day. When the day arrived, there was, as the City fans sang “only one team in Manchester”.

Classy performances from

controversial yet undeniably great player Mario Balotelli and David Silva guided the Blues to a victory that will live long in the memories of City fans and rot in the memories of the United fans.

My personal take on happenings in

Manchester, is that City are definitely the better team, and unless United pull themselves together, their position of power will be usurped by young money Manchester City.

Seems like somebody is going to have to buy a new banner…

FOREVER PROUD, BOYS No matter the outcome of our matches, we remain strong Bokke supporters, By Matthew Hurlow.

Page 35: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

While South Africa’s Rugby World Cup run may have been somewhat of a disappointment (thanks a lot Australia) if you look over it carefully, you can actually take some good things out of it. The tournament gave youngsters such as Pat Lambie and Francois Hougaard a chance to show the world what they’ve got.

Lambie’s attempted

drop-goal in the quarterfinal showed us that this promising twenty-year old was not afraid of taking matters into his own hands.

And Hougaard just showed us how amazing he is.

So if you look at it that way the World

Cup was a bit of a success...but unfortunately having the World Champions get kicked out in the quarter finals by...sorry, the name makes me cringe...Australia, is a major disappointment. The Springboks were drawn into Pool D for the tournament, which then became known as the Pool of Death as it had the likes of Fiji, Wales and Samoa in it. Their first game was scheduled to be played against a very young Wales side that can never be underestimated. However, I do remember watching that match having a very “Haha, this is going to be a very easy game” attitude. Boy was I wrong.

The Welsh fought extremely hard and they ended up losing by just one point. A perfect example of how the likes of New Zealand and Australia were going to be tested by teams like Argentina and Japan in the games to come. The rest of the pool games were surprisingly easy; the Springboks beat Fiji 49-3, they thrashed Namibia 89-0 and they beat Samoa 13-5 in a very physical game.

I distinctly remember

sitting in Afrikaans while the South Africa versus Namibia game was on. The only thing you could hear throughout the whole lesson was: “Dude, what’s the score?” or “Habana? YES!!!!!!!!” Unfortunately not a lot of attention was on out ‘Taal’ books. I also remember feeling very satisfied as the score rose higher and higher. And higher and higher and higher. So all in all the group stages were a success! But then came the quarter final...

It was the ninth of October, 2011

at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington. After an intense match (which has become renowned for the referee’s decisions) the springboks lost 9-11 to (cringe) Australia. A whole nation’s dream of becoming the first team to win the IRB Rugby World Cup on back-to-back occasions was ruined. And it sucked.

However disappointing the World Cup may have been for the springboks, the team was still hailed as heroes as they arrived back from New Zealand. And with a new coach in the offing and some exciting young players coming through, who knows? Maybe we will win it next time. So come on Bokke! Let’s go win England 2015! ▪

Stian Nieuwoudt Head Boy, 2012

Stian Nieuwoudt, or more accurately, Sarel Tielman Nieuwoudt, relishes in his second appearance as a head leader. Yes, an ex-Beaumont head boy becomes head boy once more, but one cannot help but wonder whether there is more to him than meets the eye.

Basically, what you see is what you

get, but it doesn’t make it easier to describe the indescribable. Maybe to start at what really matters: he is in Aberdeen, he was born on the 5th of May 1994, his subjects include accounting, physical and life sciences, of which physical sciences is his favourite – he regards this choice as obvious when he said, “Duh…”

Stian prides himself in the activities he

does and doesn’t settle for second best. He plays hockey, he is a swimmer and he does A-Level Mathematics and Statistics – add this to his subject choices and his A-standard work and you get the following mathematical equation: MIND = BLOWN. Before head boy, he was on the Learner Council twice before making it on the senior Council and ultimately head boy.

With all these activities, it is impossible to actually comprehend where he gets the time. When asked what super power he would most want, the answer was, “The ability to freeze time”. One can’t disagree and it almost seemed ironic that the person who could fit most of his activities in a day would need more time, but those who know Stian would agree that the one thing that he cherishes more than anything, whether he knows this or not, is time.

Stian’s ‘pet peeves’ are having

to shave every second day and his brother singing first thing in the morning with the most irritating voice. When asked if he has every used a pickup line, he said that he had used one as a joke and couldn’t remember it, upon which Sarah added, “Stian’s got play”.

As any grade 11 and 12 student

will tell you, you are always asked, “What do you want to do after school?” and Stian has a very confident answer of working either in engineering or in medicine or a part time DJ. The possibilities are realistic, and that’s what makes Stian… well, Stian!

Stian likes to lead his

own way: by example and his motto in life – although other members on the Learner Council said that is was, “Be sexy” – is, “Don’t be afraid to be different. Don’t be a sheep.”

Sarah Howard-Browne Head girl, 2012

Sarah Howard-Browne, Sarah Grace Howard-Browne. Repeat that a couple of times and you get a catchy tune. It seems that whenever she does get to say her full name, she would pout her lips and nod her head to the rhythm that is her name. Whenever you see her, she looks well rested, calm yet busy. Like a soft drink,

Sarah is bubbly – personality

wise, of course. Her favourite subject out of drama, history and life sciences is drama, and not just because she’s good at it. “That’s just who I am. I’m in my element, it’s with people I love, things I love doing, I get to challenge myself in different areas.” And Sarah is the kind of person who loves a challenge.

Her list of activities she has under belt consists of netball, athletics, and her participation in the musical ‘Dudes & Divas’, she was part of the technical team for the dramas, she was head of décor for Culture Week and the CEO of two ball committees, namely the Autumn Ball and the glamorous Matric Ball for 2011.

Being in charge of all these

committees does give her experience in her considered career as an event co-ordinator or a wedding planner, but she says that her career options constantly changes, although she has been chewing on this idea for a while.

I found it extremely ironic that her

brownies were fantastic – I didn’t expect them not to be, but with a surname like Howard-Browne, it just seemed way too easy to assume this.

But yes, she is really good at baking,

and when asked to brag about herself a little more, with the input of her friends we were able to come up with a substantial list: she is good at working with people and children, balancing and controlling different tasks (for example, during the setup for the Balls), she has the biggest heart, she is reliable in the sense that you can always go to her with for advice and knowledge and she has an answer for everything you need. “I think I’m really good at loving people.”

As a leader, she tries not to dictate, but

she prefers leading people to a place where they can excel at what they do best in, and that is what she loves to do. I know this may sound like a herder working with cattle, but it is the complete opposite. She doesn’t go ahead and lead you; she goes with you. Sarah is the kind of person that allows others the opportunity to do what they love. “It’s also about exciting and inspiring.”

Page 42: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

Yes, Sarah has been told a pickup line, but more along the lines of being wooed by a guy she met in Portugal who says she has beautiful eyes and a beautiful smile while writing her alluring letters like, “Me go email, because I like you. Together we nice. Love Pedro.” This may be completely off topic (or maybe it isn’t), but Sarah has an amazing sense of humour.

“…And Sarah is the kind of person who loves a challenge…”

Superpowers she would love to have are to go back in time and to be really fast. Her pet peeves are waking up really early in the morning (feeling like P. Diddy) and she can’t stand it when people speak in undefined speech.

I believe her exact words were, “Make yourself heard.” An inspirational message if ever I heard one.

Alistair Galloway Deputy Head boy, 2012

Alistair Galloway: short for Alistair Duncan Galloway; long for Ali G. Better known as Mr Optimism (nobody calls him that, but the smile is there). With one glance, Alistair may seem to be a very chilled, calm and relaxed person, and this is true for the most part, but there’s something: and indescribable “something” that no one can really pinpoint.

Just when you think you

know everything there is to know about him, there’s more. The only metaphor that can come close to describing him is by comparing him to a bottomless Coke.

Firstly, Coke was invented by a dentist,

hence the giant grin. Secondly, Coke is – for some – an energy source, and Alistair is exactly that. Thirdly, because it’s bottomless, there will always be… well, Coke. Just like this, Alistair will always be the perceptive person that he is, and just when you think there’s nothing more left: BAM, it hits you in the face (not literally, because Alistair won’t resort to violence)! Lastly, Coke is fizzy (you can figure that one out on your own).

Born on 22 June 1994, Alistair has a

clear goal for his life, and has chosen subjects based on his interests. Life sciences, history and physical sciences are his choices, with his favourites being biology, in which he finds great interest, and history (which he finds “lekker”) because everyone just goes crazy. It’s pretty hard to imagine Alistair in this craziness, but then again… Coke…

With these subjects, he plans on

becoming a game ranger or a marine biologist, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that he does Biology A-Levels.

When asked what he was good at, he replied, “All sport”. I couldn’t disagree because of his school activity list: cricket, squash and hockey. His fellow deputy, Diana Kuhn, corrected this statement by saying that he is good at everything, and I couldn’t disagree with this either.

Alistair has a knack for being deep

at times, with his life motto being, “Be unique and make a difference everyday.” What sets him apart from other leaders is his approach to lead by example and to set a new path; not follow and existing one.

Page 45: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

“…but there’s something: an indescribable “something” about him that no one can really pinpoint…”

Yes, Alistair has used a pickup line, which shocked me slightly. I didn’t expect that at all, so maybe I should have used the metaphor of an onion with its many layers, but he would never make anyone cry. What shocked me even more was the pickup line itself: If you were a pirate, where would your parrot be? Would it be on this shoulder, or this shoulder?

We know where this leads to, so we left it at that. If he could have any superpower, it would be time travel, and the things that annoy him are when anybody disrespects a teacher or when people bring down the school’s name. Typical Head Prefect answer: we approve!

Page 46: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

QUESTIONS WE ASKED ALISTAIR 1) If you were a tree what kind of tree would you be? An oak tree. 2) What is your favourite colour? Blue. 3) Why are manhole covers round? Are manhole covers round? 4) What is your favourite drink? Fanta. 5) What would I find in your refrigerator right now? Hopefully the lunch I've just made... 6) What is the last book you read? Victor - My Journey (Victor Matfield's biography) 7) What was the last movie you went to see? Johnny English 2. 8) What is your favourite song at the moment? Hurts like Heaven or Charlie Brown - Coldplay.

9) How many gas stations would you say there are in the United States? Nonsensically you would use the Bigmac theory in which you take the average Americans' weight, times by the average Americans' car volume and then finally you would divide by the total amount of states there are in America. Which would theoretically result in their being plus minus two hundred thousand petrol stations in the U.S.A. 10) If aliens landed in front of you and, in exchange for anything you desire, offered you any position on their planet, what would you want? To take me to their queen.

11) If you could be any character in fiction, who would you be? James Bond. 12) If you were a type of food, what type of food would you be? Jelly Tots. 13) If you were a salad, what kind of dressing would you have? Salad? 14) How many close friends do you have? Approximately 1200. 15) On a scale of 1 to 10 how happy are you? 10...it's holiday time :)

Diana Kuhn Deputy head girl, 2012

“Liefde wen.” This has been her motto in life for a while, and anybody who knows her will tell you that it will stick around for another while longer. When asked what she hated, apart from beetroot and ‘routine’, she said she didn’t hate anything. This shows us the compassionate and loving side of Diana that everyone knows. It is one of her trademark qualities. This, in a nutshell, is Diana Kuhn.

She has been told a pickup line,

and this is her exact explanation of that moment, “Someone asked me, ‘Do you like raisins?’ And I was like, ‘No, why?’ He said, ‘Okay, well then how about a date?’” When asked she has ever told a pickup line, her innocent and adorable answer was, “No, just compliments.”

THIS is one of the many reasons why everybody loves Diana, and all this love makes Diana a winner… after all, “Liefde wen.”

Her birthday is the 17th of February 1994

and her subjects include physical sciences, consumer studies and engineering, graphics and design (Technical Drawing). With these subjects, she wishes to pursue a career in architecture. She has been dream about become an architect since grade 5, which is about 7 years of dreaming.

She is certain that this is what she wants

to do. Confident in her decisions is what makes her a good leader – this is probably why she has been on the Learner Council for her second year in a row, and excuse the rhyming, but she is also in Nassau (she wanted me to add, “whoop!”).

“…This shows us the

compassionate and loving side of Diana that everyone knows. It is one of her trademark qualities. This, in a nutshell, is Diana Kuhn…”

Her school activities are netball, athletics

and a bit of swimming (emphasis on the ‘bit’) and if she could have any superpower, it would be to fly. She would love to soar in the sky, but she is really REALLY down to earth, as any of her friends will gladly testify.

Her modesty was pushed aside for a

moment to answer the question, “What are you good at?” and she didn’t hesitate in saying, “I’m good at seeing things 3D” – a valuable skill for a future architect to have. She also added, “And being weird. No, not being weird, just unexpected.”

Page 48: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

With this unexpected nature came an equally deep and unexpected answer to the most difficult question of them all: What makes you different from other leaders? After a few moments of thinking came an inspiring and wise answer. It was incredibly insightful, because it was almost a direct definition of leadership, and to this I commend her.

“I think, where other people think of leadership as ‘I lead’, I think of myself more as a servant, because a good leader is a ‘servant’. When you think of a leader, like someone in a high position, I would rather see myself as ‘I work hard’, especially last year as a junior… I work for other people.” Once again, “Liefde wen.”

Page 49: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

QUESTIONS WE ASKED DIANA 1)If you were a tree what kind of tree would you be? Jacaranda tree 2) What is your favourite colour? Turquoise 3) Why are manhole covers round? Because the heavy lid cannot fall in if it is round thus preventing accident happening . If you think about it logically, a squares diagonal is longer : a square lid would be able to fall in the hole when turned diagonally and apparently that’s dangerous. 4) What is your favourite drink? Water...always 5) What would I find in your refrigerator right now? Feta cheese and yoghurt

8) What is your favourite song at the moment? Awake My Soul by Mumford and Sons, also mighty to save by Hillsong United. 9) How many gas stations would you say there are in the United States? Too many (guessing isn’t exactly my strong point) 10) If aliens landed in front of you and, in exchange for anything you desire, offered you any position on their planet, what would you want? I would go live among the alien dinosaurs. What? 11) If you could be any character in fiction, who would you be? Hiccup in How to Train Your Dragon 12) If you were a type of food, what type of food would you be? A Mango

6) What is the last book you read? Meeulanders (for afrikaans school exam) 7) What was the last movie you went to see? Twilight? A friend forced me.

13) If you were a salad, what kind of dressing would you have? This specific dressing called “Legal Addiction” 14) How many close friends do you have? Um 15? 15) On a scale of 1 to 10 how happy are you? Happiness=8; joy=10 (yes, there’s a big difference)

2012’S CHEERLEADERS

Aberdeen By Bradley Laubscher

Page 59: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

o Emma Van Heynigen

1) What motivated you to become a cheerleader for your house? I believe that intimidation is the key. One thing PV has is the ability to have discipline. It was definitely proven in 2008 when we won the interschool's spirit cup, theme: China. We just need to find that core focus so that we can blow our enemy's minds. 2) What qualities do you feel you have that will help your house as a cheerleader? I think having the mind set of winning makes it important for the group to have a purpose and goal. No one should see the spirit side of athletics as something too serious, but as an opportunity to show their creativity, commitment and focusing abilities. The moment you are able to prove that, the fun follows automatically. 3) Will you try bond with your house or have a strict regime and total order and control? Through hours of experience of singing in many different choirs, I learnt that you bond with a group if you make the experience personal. The group should feel unique and should look forward to working on a project/production. I will not place myself in a higher position to the rest of the cheerers, I will be a motivator instead, reminding the group what the purpose of all this is. 4) What will your methods be to inspire your team to keep going and cheering others on even if your house is currently losing? I have had a negative experience before where the leader would make the group feel guilty, instead of finding a way to make them do something. If you constantly make a group feel guilty, you end up demotivating them. There needs to be positivity, or else everything will fall apart. Leading with a sense of humour helps the group to think on their feet and be interested in what they will have to do next. There have been leaders that have gotten that right. 5) What memories/experiences will you want to walk away with after the interhouse championships? I hope to learn that it is possible to create an amazing end product by using an amazing, spirit-filled, positive method. I'd like to be able to not only be a house-cheerleader, but a person the group can turn to when needed. 2012 will be amazing. No need for hope. It's a fact!

o Izak Loftus

1) What motivated you to become a cheerleader for your house? I just love Abby, since we're the best house ever! 2) What qualities do you feel you have that will help your house as a cheerleader? I've got Abby gees pumping through my veins. 3) Will you try bond with your house or have a strict regime and total order and control? At Aberdeen we don't have to bond since we're already such a close family. Control is our middle name (after Winning). 4) What will your methods be to inspire your team to keep going and cheering others on even if your house is currently losing? Abby doesn't lose. Ever. 5) What memories/experiences will you want to walk away with after the interhouse championships? Well like always we're not going to walk away with only memories, but with all the cups as well.

o

Page 60: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

o Kyle Green

1) What motivated you to become a cheerleader for your house? Motivation comes naturally when you are a part of Aberdeen. We strive to win, and it shows. Cheerleaders should be there to direct the house in the right direction, the students do the rest. 2) What qualities do you feel you have that will help your house as a cheerleader? Having fun is automatic, winning takes a little bit more effort. Aberdeen has been the power house for the past couple of years, why stop winning now? 3) Will you try bond with your house or have a strict regime and total order and control? You need to have a positive relationship with the students whilst training them to punish the competition. Balance is always good. 4) What will your methods be to inspire your team to keep going and cheering others on even if your house is currently losing? Grade 8 is most definitely the most memorable year of high school before you reach matric so, make it one to remember. I remember looking up to the cheerleaders when I was in grade 8. One needs to adopt certain traditions whilst creating new ones. 5) What memories/experiences will you want to walk away with after the interhouse championships? I hope to bind aberdeen as one and teach them that winning isn't always everything, but it's the preferable option. I hope to develop my leadership skills enhance my relationship with younger grades.

o Lungi Kheswa

1) What motivated you to become a cheerleader for your house? I had a desire to become a cheerleader ever since I was in grade 8, and LOVING my house also played an huge role 2) What qualities do you feel you have that will help your house as a cheerleader? I AM LOUD and very energetic (I guess that can help) 3) Will you try bond with your house or have a strict regime and total order and control? I am a people's person I guess bonding will do it for me... 4) What will your methods be to inspire your team to keep going and cheering others on even if your house is currently losing? Bring in lekker music...because music joins everyone and with nice music people will dance and cheer at all times 5) What memories/experiences will you want to walk away with after the interhouse championships? The Primary memory would be winning the spirit cup and my House also winning (AGAIN) and I also want to walk out with fun memories that was created by my new friends

Joshua Allers

1) What motivated you to become a cheerleader for your house? I was just really amped to ignite something fresh in the house spirit, and what better way to do it than as a cheerleader? 2) What qualities do you feel you have that will help your house as a cheerleader? Zeal for school spirit, enthusiasm, a general optimistic vibe. 3) Will you try bond with your house or have a strict regime and total order and control? The house members will obviously play a crucial role, and should therefore be included as much as possible. We can't win the spirit cup with just the cheerleaders' vocals, it's going to take a group effort and the group should be familiar and comfortable with their cheerleaders. 4) What will your methods be to inspire your team to keep going and cheering others on even if your house is currently losing? Enthusiasm is contagious. The cheerleaders often set the example for the rest of the house, and should fill this role with as much ecstatic craziness as possible to keep everyone amped. 5) What memories/experiences will you want to walk away with after the interhouse championships? A good memory will be a victory otherwise, just the thought that I (we) as cheerleaders did something mentally good and left a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.

o Anne Appelo

1) What motivated you to become a cheerleader for your house? I LOVE NASSAU 2) What qualities do you feel you have that will help your house as a cheerleader? I love music and being around people, lifting up their spirits, CHEERING them on 3) Will you try bond with your house or have a strict regime and total order and control? We'll definitely bond, all the Nassau cheerleaders are great people, I think we'll have a jam together 4) What will your methods be to inspire your team to keep going and cheering others on even if your house is currently losing? Well I doubt our house will be losing at any point during the event, but I think our team is generally pretty keen to go for it and make the most of the day so I doubt we'll need anything more to keep us going. I'll keep the flow of cold drinks, good food, laughter and jokes up throughout the day, just like the rest of the team. 5) What memories/experiences will you want to walk away with after the interhouse championships? Hopefully winning the spirit and athletic cup! I'm sure the day will hold great memories and I think lasting friendships will come from it, even with the opposing houses

o Demi-Lin Duncan

1) What motivated you to become a cheerleader for your house? Well I've always wanted to be a cheerleader. I was a cheerleader for my house in grade 7 and I always knew I'd want to do it again in high school, especially with the amazing spirit our school has. 2) What qualities do you feel you have that will help your house as a cheerleader? I am energetic, work well with people, loud and motivating.(Or so I've been told) 3) Will you try bond with your house or have a strict regime and total order and control? There's no I in team and I believe that everyone has something unique and special to bring to the idea. I never want to be one of those controlling people that wants to control and run everything. 4) What will your methods be to inspire your team to keep going and cheering others on even if your house is currently losing? . To remain positive throughout the entire day. Whether we're winning or losing. I believe people need someone to look up to and I would like to be that person. I hope to keep the team motivated by encouraging them to give their best and reminding them that although winning is great, it isn't everything. Things can change in an instant and even if one person is winning at the beginning of the day, it could easily change at the end. 5) What memories/experiences will you want to walk away with after the interhouse championships? A feeling of unity with my fellow cheerleaders. Memories of the amazing time we shared together during the days leading up to the competition and the feelings of happiness and content at successfully pulling off everything we planned.

1) What motivated you to become a cheerleader for your house? I’ve always wanted to be part of a team of people that want to shout and scream. I thought I had enough spirit to spread to everyone on my team. After being chosen, I think it proved that I do have enough spirit 2) What qualities do you feel you have that will help your house as a cheerleader? Being loud, a large amount of team spirit, creativity and practicality (this is very important)... Did I mention being loud? 3) Will you try bond with your house or have a strict regime and total order and control? I will try to do both. A good combination of the two will build up respect between your house and you. I will try to make it as fun and enjoyable as possible, but it is important to get everything right, because we are in it to win it! 4) What will your methods be to inspire your team to keep going and cheering others on even if your house is currently losing? 4) Motivation, motivation, motivation! On the impossibility that we do find ourselves losing, a little motivation will give us confidence. 5) What memories/experiences will you want to walk away with after the interhouse championships? Firstly, winning! And secondly, I want to remember the sportsmanship and the support our team displays. Also, the bonding experience we, as cheerleaders, will have.

Also getting teachers to take part in motivation by making a deal with the teachers that if we win the inter schools they should dye their hair an exotic colour or something like that. 2) Will you teach your house the values of winning or of just having fun while competing? Having fun is most important. As long as everybody enjoys themselves then I think we could call that a win. 3) Will you try to befriend your house or be a leader who trains and leads them harshly to better the chances of winning? I would like to lead my team by supporting them as a friend to perform to the best of their own abilities and to enjoy themselves along the way. 4)What is a memory you have of one your House Captains and how they lead? Is it a good memory or is it one that will you said to yourself "I would never do that if I were a captain!" NOTE: names do not have be mentioned in this answer. honestly don’t remember many of our previous house captains. The team should know who their captains are and should look to them for advice. 5) What experiences or life lessons do you hope to walk away with after the inter house is over? I hope that we will all learn that winning isn’t everything. Having fun and making friends is something that is a lot more valuable than winning. Alistair Galloway (Joined with Sara-Leigh Kruger) 1) How do you plan to leave motivate your team into winning the inter schools next year? Any new methods? Hi. My name is Serena Paver. I’ve been on this floating rock we call Earth for 16 years, and there’s probably only one thing in this world that I haven’t doubted for a second: the magic of dance. I’ve been so lucky to be involved in the dancing world – it has made me a better person, continuously inspires me and (if you will) keeps me off the streets. Among others, my proudest moments in dance would be: winning the Copper Point for most promising dancer in 2001, dancing my first solo in 2002, dancing my first solo on pointe in 2007, winning a trophy for promising dancer in 2010 and dancing at the Artscape in the production of Romeo and Juliet at the beginning of this year. 1.How long have you been dancing? Give or take 13 years. A long time – from the age where one doesn’t actually dance, just run around and ‘sew up’ ‘fairy wings’. 2. Do you have any dancer role models? Yes, both my dance teachers: Mariette Steyn (Ballet) and Lizelle Gous (Contemporary). As well as the fabulous Dame Margot Fonteyn, she didn’t have the greatest technique, or the most perfect feet for ballet, but when she was on stage you couldn’t take your eyes off her. She was incredible. And of course Li Cunxin. His story is amazing; he worked so hard to be the dancer he was. I really respect that. 3. Why do you love to dance? When I start to dance there’s this feeling that builds up inside of me. I can’t explain it, but it’s so powerful. Dancing is so beautiful and when you do it, you get to feel beautiful too. It’s like a magical moment when everything stops and you can forget about the world. 4. What kind of emotions do you feel/give off when you dance? Well it really depends on the piece. You have to meld yourself to the music and really feel the movements. You have to understand what you’re doing. It gets to the point where you can even find yourself crying when you get offstage. That said; there’s still a deep sense of happiness that fills you when you know you’ve just killed a dance. 5. How do you feel when you perform? AMAZING. I love being on stage. There is nothing like it. 6. what keeps you from not quitting dance, in other words: what inspires you to keep on dancing? So many things. Apart from the fact that dancing is a drug I can’t live without, there are all these little magical moments that keep me going. Like: a pair of new Gaynor Minden pointes; seeing Miss Lizelle perform the new choreography she just made up for us; being cast in a production like Moulin Rouge; that moment just before you go on stage and you’re so nervous but also excited; being on stage; that moment after you come off stage and you can’t help but grinning; So You Think You Can Dance. And of course, my first ballet teacher, the late Beverly Luyt. She was the first woman who really believed in my dancing ability and she still inspires me to work hard and chase my dreams.

Hi I'm Wilmi and I love dancing. I was born on the 21st of December 1994 and I have been dancing ever since. the highlight of my dance "career" was being one of the fairy godmothers with Leandri de Kock in Gail Hatting's Cinderella in 2010. Dancing has had its challenges but I love it with all my heart 1. How long have you been dancing? 11 years 2. Do you have any dancer role models? No, I don’t have a role model, but all the ladies in my class definitely inspire me. 3. Why do you love to dance? I love the way dancing always puts a smile on my face. 4. What kind of emotions do you feel/give off when you dance? I’m always happy and excited when I get to dance 5. How do you feel when you perform? I usually have butterflies in my stomach, but I'm excited none the less 6. what keeps you from not quitting dance, in other words: what inspires you to keep on dancing? The people that dance with me and the feeling I get when I’m dancing.

I'm Maxine Botha, Ever since I can remember; dancing has been a passion of mine and what I've spent a lot of my time on! This year was an extremely exciting year for me dancing wise as I danced in 4 productions- Romeo and Juliet, Urban Beat, Dudes and Diva's and Art in Motion. Next year I'll be doing Moulin Rouge at the Artscape. Dancing is definitely one of my top priorities and favourite hobbies. 1. How long have you been dancing? I've been dancing since I was 5 years old, running around in ballet class with a little pink leotard 2. What got you into dancing? I watched the movie Center Stage when I was very young. The main lead was this beautiful ballerina and I wanted to dance exactly how she did. She danced in these red pointe shoes and was amazing to watch!. 3.Do you have any dancer role models? I am quite addicted to So You Think You Can Dance. If I could dance like anyone that's been on that show, it would be the winner of season 7- Lauren Froderman. Most inspirational dancer by far! 4.. Why do you love to dance? I love to dance because it’s the most real way to express myself. It is a beautiful form of art and it just feels so right. One of those things you can't explain 5.. What kinds of emotions do you feel/give off when you dance? I dance best when I'm happy or excited, full of passion and energy. Dancing is really rewarding, (like finally nailing a double piroesque) but it can also be draining and full of hard work! 6.. How do you feel when you perform? Performing is extremely nerve wrecking!! From the PV musical to Romeo and Juliet at the Artscape, I always get super nervous. If the first few steps are fine then the nerves normally disappear and adrenaline kicks in. I love it! 7.. What keeps you from not quitting dance, in other words: what inspires you to keep on dancing? My dancing teachers inspire me. When I see how far I've come I just want to work harder. I have so many dreams to fulfill and only perseverance will get me to them!

Hi, I’m Georgia Ludick. I was born on 28 March 1995. I’m from Somerset West and have participated in many hip-hop dancing competitions, eisteddfods and exams. The various groups that I take part in have achieved very good results in many different competitions and eisteddfods. Some of my achievements that I am most proud of are placing 1st for my duo (with my duo partner, Simone) in the Battle of the Giants 2010 in Sun city, winning the duo section at the Eisteddfod of Performing Arts in Seapoint in 2010 and our small group, Ignite, placing 1st in the Eistedfod of the Performing Arts 2011 in Seapoint. 1. How long have you been dancing? I started ballet when I was in Grade 1 and then stopped for a while and started dancing again in Grade 5. I guess you could say I’ve been dancing for about 7 years. 2. What got you into dancing? What initially got me into hip-hop dancing was the energy and the music. It gives you a certain confidence and attitude, which really appealed to me. 3. Do you have any dancer role models? I don’t really have any famous dancing role models, but I look up to a lot of the contestants that appear on “So You Think You Can Dance” and a lot of dancers that I know personally. 4. Why do you love to dance? When I hear a song that I like, I can’t help but dance, whether it’s in my bedroom or the supermarket. I love moving to music and expressing myself through dance. Dancing also serves as a great stress reliever and self-esteem booster. 5. What kind of emotions do you feel/give off when you dance? When I dance, I’m usually happy. 6. How do you feel when you perform? I usually experience an adrenalin rush when I perform. There’s so much excitement and nerves before you’re about to dance that when you do, it all just takes over your body and allows you to give all the energy you can on stage. 7. what keeps you from not quitting dance, in other words: what inspires you to keep on dancing? My studio. And obviously my love for dance, I can’t imagine my life without dance. It takes a lot of work and practice, but if you love dancing it’s all worth it in the end.

Hey I'm Amee Heyburgh My birthday is on the 13th of September and I have been living in this town my whole life. I might not be an A candidate when it comes to academics or a 1st place sprinter in athletics but somewhere along the line I fell in love with dancing. This year I had the opportunity to take part in an international dance competition that took place in Italy. Much to our surprise we came 2nd in hip hop, were awarded best choreography and tied 1st place with Guam. 1. How long have you been dancing? I started dancing when I was 7 years old. 2. What got you into dancing? As a little girl I always found myself dancing for my family and wanted to start ballet. But then my dad told me that Dads couldn't come watch ballet (although looking back I can imagine why), so I started modern dance at Sume's Studio. 3. Do you have any dancer role models? I'd have to say Sabra Johnson winner of SYTYCD season 3 and Melanie Moore, this seasons winner. Both of them have a stage presence that is amazing and flexibility that's crazy. 4. Why do you love to dance? I love nothing more than music and to be able to move to that music is so refreshing. It's my way of releasing all my emotions. 5. What kind of emotions do you feel/give off when you dance? Well it all depends on the type of dance, after Courtney passed away a close group of us performed a dance for her and I have never felt like that whilst performing before. That night I felt like I was expressing every emotion I have ever felt. You also just get your normal performances which are just a big rush and it's hard to keep the excitement from showing on my face. 6. How do you feel when you perform? I'm quite a nervous person so my nerves tend to eat at me but all in all it's always so much fun. 7. what keeps you from not quitting dance, in other words: what inspires you to keep on dancing? There are often times when dancing takes up so much time and I consider stopping but then I think how I would feel if I didn't dance anymore and I literally feel lost. I have made so many good friends and grown so much as a person all because of dancing. As cliché as it sounds Courtney was a good friend of mine and her passion for dance was absolutely beautiful, the way she lit up when she danced was something else. If she ever found out that i had stopped she would've been so disappointed in me, so I hope to one day have the impact she had through dancing.

Hi there, my names Anene Visser. I’m a dancer at Sumes dance studio. I do modern dancing and until recently I did hip hop. My birthday on the first of May and my favourite things to do are spending time with friends dancing and going to the beach. 1. How long have you been dancing? I have been dancing for 13 years. 2. What got you into dancing? Like most young girls I started with ballet and after moving to Somerset west I started modern and have never stopped 3. Do you have any dancer role models? My teacher, Sume, is my role model. She has taught me to never let anything put me down and to reach for my goals. I’ve also learnt from her that life’s not based on what, but how you do it. 4. Why do you love to dance? Dancing makes me feel incredibly happy. I love to move to the music and express myself through a God given talent. Nothing can replace my love for dancing. 5. What kind of emotions do you feel/give off when you dance? I feel a great amount of passion when I dance. I feel very blessed to be able to do what I’m doing. Dancing brings out the joy in me. 6. How do you feel when you perform? Performing gives me an incredible adrenaline rush!! It gets my heart pumping and my feet stomping to the beat, it just feels so natural and amazing! 7. What keeps you from not quitting dance, in other words: what inspires you to keep on dancing? Dancing is a way of escaping the crazy times life gives me. I just love to be able to move to the music and forget about everything else and just focus on myself. I’ve been given a stunning talent and I’ll use it as long as i possibly can. The people I’ve met and friends I’ve made through dancing have also made a positive contribution in my life. I just can’t imagine my life without dance.

Hey I’m Kate Turner. I was born on the 2nd of May 1994 and I’m starting my matric year this coming year. 1. How long have you been dancing? I’ve been dancing on and off since I was 7 and only started again about a year ago but all together iv probably danced about 6 or so years 2. What got you into dancing? I once saw the nutcracker at Artscape in Cape Town and when you little you want to be like those really amazing people on stage so I asked my mom for ballet lessons 3. Do you have any dancer role models? Melanie Moore winner of this season “so you think you can dance" is probably my role model at the moment. She’s amazing 4. Why do you love to dance? It’s free. You can do whatever you want and express yourself however, because everyone’s style is different. 5. What kind of emotions do you feel/give off when you dance? Well I don’t know what I give off but i feel happy when I dance. Like nothing else matters but wanting to please the audience. 6. How do you feel when you perform? Before the time it’s always nerve-wracking to get onto a stage but when you dance everything’s fine you know what you have to do and you the only one that you need t rely on. 7. what keeps you from not quitting dance, in other words: what inspires you to keep on dancing? I’ve quit dancing plenty of times for hockey and other sport but what inspires me is that it’s fun. I don’t do dancing that seriously so it’s just a time to relax and do what i enjoy.

Hi I'm Bradley Laubscher, I’m currently 17 but turn 18 at the end of this year, Born in East London moved to Somerset West when I was 3 and I am a male dancer in Somerset West and have been for around 5 years. 1. How long have you been dancing? As I said I have done sorta dancing for 5 years but only in the last 2 years have I done any serious productions 2. What got you into dancing? I first actually joined this Gymnastics program for boys, all around ages 10 - 12, where we would do cartwheels and tricks and fun stuff, and every now and then we would perform for people in a show. When I got old enough (like around 14) they asked if I would like to join "The older boys" class, which was proper dancing along with some other people from the gymnastics class, and I agreed. since then I only really started learning to dance various forms like modern, hip-hop and contemporary and have been dancing ever since. 3. Do you have any dancer role models? There are a couple of the older people in my studio who I would love to able to dance like one day, including my dance teacher Lizelle Gouws (not related to our Headmaster) who dances with pure strength and grace. But I actually have no famous role models no. 4. Why do you love to dance? Dancing is one of the greatest joys in my life, you gain complete control over your body, the better you dance, the more control you have, and when you dance to a beat and have great choreography as well that your body responds to well, then you experience a sort of "high". Dancing is basically my drug. 5. What kind of emotions do you feel/give off when you dance? Dancing is one of the greatest joys in my life, you gain complete control over your body, the better you dance, the more control you have, and when you dance to a beat and have great choreography as well that your body responds to well, then you experience a sort of "high". Dancing is basically my drug. 6. How do you feel when you perform? It actually depends on the type of dance you are doing, hip-hop makes me feel energized and hyped up, contemporary gives you a sort of serenity, often a shiver of satisfaction down your spine, but in all the dances I feel joy and I feel...powerful. That's really the only way I can describe it. 7. what keeps you from not quitting dance, in other words: what inspires you to keep on dancing? Well apart from the absolute satisfaction and joy I get from dancing, it is my main form of exercise and if I give it up my fitness is going to suffer, dancing is one of the greatest forms of exercise in existence, its like lifting weights while jogging. And once you benefit from dancing physically then its hard to give it up. Once again its like a drug.

Hey, my name is Dalibo Furnell, I was born and have lived in Somerset West for my whole life. I do ballet and Modern dancing. I have done many shows and productions in my life, ones more recently- Romeo and Juliet for which I was nominated for most improved. At the eistedford recently I came first place and won my 15-16 silver set dance and also danced in the 20+ over group dance that also came first place. I am also featuring in upcoming productions: Moulin Rouge at Artscape and Spier, as well as charlie and the chocolate factory( modern) and peter pan( ballet) next year! 1. How long have you been dancing? Give or take about 13 years 2. What got you into dancing? My mother took me to my first dance class when I was three and I was hooked. She also took me to dance shows- which inspired me to also want to dance. 3. Do you have any dancer role models? Well yes, I have many dancer role models- other than the amazing professional company dancers, many of my fellow dancers are my role models, as they all have different styles and graces about their dance that I really appreciate and aspire to. 4. Why do you love to dance? I love to dance because it is a creative and emotional outlet that uses no words to communicate with people. You get to connect and appeal to people and audiences in a different way. Dancing is good for the soul. 5. What kind of emotions do you feel/give off when you dance? Usually whatever emotion that suits the style of the dance piece- I usually try put feeling into my face and body language to really convince the audience of what mood or story you are trying to portrey. 6. How do you feel when you perform? At first, nervous. But really, I feel absolutely amazing that I get to share it with people. Its a type of performing that you could never get tired of- its completely new and enthralling everytime. 7. what keeps you from not quitting dance, in other words: what inspires you to keep on dancing? It is the mere passion for dance that keeps me from quitting.

Page 79: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

I'm Riyaaz Fletcher, also known as "Potential" (my crew name). I'm 17 years

old. born in Cape Town, live in Strand. What inspired me to do dancing, was that I watched "step up 2" in 2008 quite awhile ago, and what made me get a passion to dance was the way those people can move there body in various ways. 1.How long have you been dancing? I've been dancing properly since the end of grade 9. 2. What got you into dancing? Watching step up 2, and guys acting silly when dancing but still looking good. 3. Do you have any dancer role models? dancing role models is: Tight Eyez, Adam G. Sevani ( AKA as Moose). 4. Why do you love to dance? I love dancing because it de-stresses me, and in a way it makes me more complete. 5. What kind of emotions do you feel/give off when you dance? I give off unwanted vibes from y body. Our crew's soul purpose is to let everyone know that we dance for Jesus Christ. So basically I give off my passion and love for Jesus when we dance as a unit. 6. How do you feel when you perform? I always feel heavy and not worthy of performing in the beginning (as well as nervousness), but afterwards I feel so much better, not because of the vibe from the crowd loving our style, but because I know I have satisfied Jesus in my talent. 7. what keeps you from not quitting dance, in other words: what inspires you to keep on dancing? what keeps me from not quitting is: watching dancing, trying out new moves, and being inspired by the rest of the crew.

My name is Daniella Maccioni and as born on the 15th of January, 1994. I was born here in SA but my family originates from different parts of Italy. My achievements in dancing: i just did my intermediate senior level 2 exam and passed with honours. which I’m pretty chuffed about also I was part of a team of dancers from cape town who went on a tour around Italy performing in an international competition with countries such as America, Singapore and Guam... our team was the overall winners for the competition... 1. How long have you been dancing? I started dancing when I was 3years old. And I’ve been dancing ever since. 2. What got you into dancing? I got into dancing because my mom was a dancer, so I don’t think that I would have start dancing, if she had not been a dancer herself. 3. Do you have any dancer role models? I think that I have 2 main dancing role models. One would have to e my dancing teacher, Sume Lotter, she’s like a second mom to me. And second would have to be my mom, like I said, I don’t think I would’ve gotten into dancing if she wasn’t a dancer... also, watching videos of my mom dancing was a huge inspiration to me and that’s one of the reasons I love dancing so much. 4. Why do you love to dance? I love dancing because it’s my way of expressing myself. Some people like to run, some people like to paint. I love to dance... sometimes I feel that if there are no words to describe how you feel about something, doing a meaningful dance says it all without having to say a word. 5. What kind of emotions do you feel/give off when you dance? I think every emotion there is, is given off when I dance. You can feel so happy, or you can feel incredibly sad. Every dance has a meaning and a story, so the emotion given off is completely dependant on the story behind it. 6. How do you feel when you perform? Performing makes me nervous. And I perform better in front of people I know. Performing does however make me happy, because it gives you a chance to explain something your own way. 7. what keeps you from not quitting dance, in other words: what inspires you to keep on dancing? My friends inspire me a lot. My best friends are my dancing friends and I don’t think the experience would be the same without them I don’t dance because I have to exercise or because I need to do something with my free time. I dance because it makes me happy and without dancing, I don’t think I’d be the person I am.

talented performers to know how (brilliantly)

they dance.•

Sabrina Shuttes interviews GIG’s new CEO, Esmane Minnie. GIG (known as SCA as well) gave as some insight all about it, what their aim is, functions that are held and goals that they would like to reach.

GIG may not only influence your life individually but may bring people and friends together.

Page 82: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

A committee elected at the end the 3rd term runs GIG. To help the committee we have a social worker who is at school everyday. GIG sessions are held during first break on a Thursday. We also have prayer meetings on a Monday during first break 3. Does GIG have any goals for 2012? If yes what are they? Our goal for 2012 is to focus more on relationships with each other and with God than the bigger events. Thus this year we will have less Praise and worship Evenings but more smaller group action. 4. In your opinion, why should learners attend GIG? SCA was part of PV for many years and then in 2011 the committee decided to rename the group. Thus GIG was born and we've been growing ever since. The 2012 GIG committee. 5. How and when did GIG originate in PV? GIG is fortunate enough to have a support group which consists of Prayer Moms who carry us in prayer and who are always there to lend a helping hand at our events.•

1. Can you give us a bit of insight as to what GIG is about? GIG which stands for God is Good/God is Groot is a group that exists in PV. Our aim is to create a place within the school where anybody (not only Christians) can come and experience God in all His glorious forms through testimonies, scripture, praise and worship, guest speakers and cell groups. 2. What functions does GIG included throughout the year? During the year we have several Praise and Worship Evenings where we have a band leading the worship and a guest speaker who delivers a message, as well as the occasional Prayer and Worship Evenings where a band leads worship but the focus is more on prayer. We also host a De-Stress Day at the end of every year to help relieve the stress that we built up during the year and especially during the final exams. During this day we have many fun-filled games and activities such as soccer, volleyball etc for our learners to participate in. Every year during the week that Valentine's Day falls, we have Love Week. That week GIG has full reign of the school. We have 3 assemblies (Monday, Wednesday and Friday), we decorate the entire school according to the chosen theme. Traditionally everyday has its own theme within the bigger theme, thus our learners have different activities and messages to do and embrace during the week. One evening during Love Week we have a Praise and Worship event. During the year we have camps where other school’s SCA groups join us.

We are sad to say that a loving and dedicated teacher has left the school. Mrs Rossouw has been a teacher at PV for seventeen years but

decided that it was time to move on to greater adventures. She answered some questions for us that you may be intrigued to read

about.

By Sabrina Shuttes

We say farewell to Mrs DeniseRossouw

Page 84: ULTIMATE PV DEC/JAN 2012

1. 1. Why did you choose education as your career? It was either teaching or journalism, as the only thing I was really good at was reading. 2. Who is your role model and why? Sounds very pretentious, but my role model is Jesus, I suppose – or Buddha, or Bishop Tutu. I would like to be loving and generous and forgiving, and that’s incredibly difficult. I used to utter mock death threats in class to pupils behaving badly, but some of them weren’t very mock. 3. What will you be doing after teaching? I am hoping to start a new career in editing and translating. Words are what I really love. 4. The hardest part about teaching? The admin! And the tons of marking – I love words, but after you’ve carefully taught something, and almost every paper has it horribly wrong... 5. Apart from the long holiday, what do you like the most about teaching? What long holiday? When? I’ve never found one long enough. J What I really love about teaching is being in the classroom and hearing the ideas about what we’re reading or discussing. I love taking a class right through from Grade 8 and watching them change into adults. They always (almost always) turn out to be such lovely, interesting people. 6. How long have you been teaching at PV? For seventeen years. But I was a school parent from the day the school first opened its doors. 7. if you had a choice to teach again, would you? If I could just teach, and not mark or take detention or...

2.

3. 8. How do you reward students? Never thought about that. I’ve always assumed that their reward was an education. I suppose I say, ‘Well done,’ or ‘lovely answer’ occasionally 9. How do you discipline students for bad behaviour etc? Aha. Now that’s a topic I can talk about, but I’ll keep it short. For most things the punishment is to write out two pages from their set work. Accurately. And I check. Educational, see? Or if they talk during the announcements, the punishment is to stay at break or after school (straight away, as announcements come just before those times) and use sandpaper to scrape marks off the desks. 10. Is there a message you would like to convey to your colleagues? Yes – I’m going to miss them very much. A warmer, more loving and delightful group of people would be difficult to find. 11. Most embarrassing moment while teaching? I know there were some ghastly ones when I burned with embarrassment for days afterwards, but I’ve mercifully forgotten them. I know one of the milder ones was when a matric boy (way back in the 1900s) asked me to marry him. And seemed to be serious. I was terrified of hurting his feelings in case he was serious, and went bright red and mumbled something ridiculous. Which again I mercifully forget.

12. Funniest answer you have seen from your

A small THANK YOU from the learners Dear Mrs Rossouw It is with mixed emotions that I wish you farewell. Although I am sad to lose such a distinguished English teacher, I am conscious that, after spending the majority of your life attempting to teach droves of near-illiterates, you are deserving of a long and peaceful retirement. It takes great courage and determination to hold to your beliefs and values in the face of a mutinous class of teenagers, and you displayed both of these qualities despite my class’s defiance, earning our respect in the process. Your vast knowledge of, well, everything, as well as your quirky sense of humour, never failed to impress us. I can only hope that I will be as erudite as you are one day. Once you said to us, “Teenagers are too old to do what children do, and too young to do what adults do, so they do what no one does.” It took a moment for us to comprehend your meaning, but, in the end, we realised that you knew us better than we knew ourselves. Your passion for English is so deep that it is infectious. I suppose that this is the reason that you are not bringing your teaching career to an end quite yet. I know from experience that you will influence the lives of those you will be teaching at False Bay High School positively, even if you will only be there for a few months. Thank you for every lesson in both English and life be it hard-learned or easily understood. Thank you for never giving up on us – even when it seemed like we had given up on you. Finally, thank you for showing me that one should never compromise one’s values, even in the face of failure. I hope that your retirement will be filled with days of joy, laughter, and impeccable grammar. Love Tara Oosthuizen & The 11E1’s

Dear Mrs Rossouw On behalf of our class, i do not know where to start when it comes to explain what an extraordinary teacher you are. In these two years we have learnt and have understood more than we ever had in all our years of learning English. We cannot show how thankful we are for the experience and also how unhappy we are that you are leaving. I can honestly say that or class has the greatest respect for you out of all the teachers in Parel Vallei. We will dearly miss you and we wish you nothing bur the best for your life ahead. Lots of Love Michelle & The 9E2’s

Dear Mrs Rossouw The past three years of English have been fun, educational and filled with joy. We have had such good memories being in your class and will sincerely miss coming to English lessons. Thank you for always being funny, caring, strict (in a good way) and inspirational. We hope you will enjoy your next journey in life, and good luck with all that you do. We will always remember you and miss you dearly. Love Christine Knobbs & The 10E1’s•
