WHY ULTIMATE SKI VACATIONS?

Page 4: Ultimate Ski Vacations

Anywhere that averages 3 metres (10 feet) of snow each winter combined with vertical elevations of more than 770 metres (2,500 feet) is bound to deliver thrills for skiers and boarders. The Province of Québec has those two prerequisites and much more – including the opportunity to experience the vibrant and unique French culture.

The province features three main ski areas: the Laurentides, home to Tremblant, ‘the beast of the East’ in North American skiing; the Québec City area, with familiar names like Mont-Sainte-Anne and easy access to North America’s oldest city; and the Eastern Townships in Québec’s southeast, where the Appalachian Mountains rise from the St. Lawrence lowlands.

Here’s a quick look at some key highlights of the Québec ski season:

TremblantEastern North America’s best destination ski resort, Tremblant has it all: world-class skiing and boarding, excellent accommodations, fine dining, sizzling nightlife, soothing spas and superb shopping.

A reasonable drive from Southern Ontario, Tremblant has become even more accessible in recent years thanks to Porter Airlines flights from Toronto’s Island Airport. Toronto ski lovers can leave the big city in the morning and be carving turns at Tremblant in the afternoon. This year will be better than ever, as Porter responds to the success of the three-year-old service by “ramping it up” to as many as 12 weekly flights during peak season. The flight program kicks off just before Christmas and runs through April. The combination of Porter flights and Ultimate Ski Vacations packages make Tremblant an easy choice for skiers and boarders alike.

There’s something for everyone at Tremblant. For the party crowd, the après-ski never stops! The choices of activities, hotels and amenities have been created with families, skiers and non-skiers in mind too.

Le MassifThe excitement continues to build at this resort located 70 kilometres from Québec City. Investors led by Cirque du Soleil founder Daniel Gauthier are transforming Le Massif and the local area into an eco-focused four-season international resort destination. A new high-speed gondola carrying eight passengers per cabin, four new trails and expanded terrain are all part of the $16-million mountain enhancement.

In the meantime, Le Massif continues to offer some of Québec’s best skiing and boarding. With Eastern Canada’s largest vertical drop, this ‘solid mass’ of a mountain is blessed with a microclimate delivering massive amounts of snow – a 10-year average of 600 cm or 20 feet. There are 45 trails and glades ranging from easy to extremely difficult, and the longest run is nearly 5 kilometres. Après-ski, the focus is on fine food and wine – the region is famed for its farm-fresh products and innovative chefs.

Mont-Sainte-Anne/StonehamJust 30 minutes from world-renowned Québec City, the resorts of Mont-Sainte-Anne and Stoneham offer some of Eastern North America’s best slopes with a total of 105 runs (66 for Sainte-Anne, 39 at Stoneham)—and an available dual mountain pass ensures you won’t miss a thing.

Renowned internationally for their alpine skiing terrain and conditions, the mountains are also all around winter adventure resorts! Try dog sledding, paragliding, ice canyoning, scandinavian-style spa, winter geocaching, cross-country skiing, ice skating, snowshoeing and more! While both resorts offer night skiing, Stoneham boasts being one of the biggest night skiing networks in the country, complemented by unique night life, free hot tub access at the bar and live bands every weekend.

As Canada’s first National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Banff was created as something to be shared. The mountain communities of Banff and Lake Louise offer a healthy combination of unspoiled and protected wilderness and world-class luxury amidst rugged splendor. With such a breathtaking landscape and abundant opportunities for exploration and adventure during the winter months, it’s no surprise that Banff National Park has been nominated time and again as a “must-see” destination for travellers around the world.

In winter, Banff National Park becomes a giant playground with a backyard full of fresh snow and impressive peaks. With three exhilarating ski areas and almost 8,000 acres of terrain, you’ll find slopes to suit every level and desire.

The tri-area covers three distinctive areas: Mt. Norquay, The Lake Louise Ski Resort and Sunshine Village, as well as access to bus systems that whisk you from hotel to ski slopes. The best thing about it? The season here runs from November to May, giving you tons of time to carve your turns.

Mt. Norquay, just 10 minutes from the town of Banff, is widely considered to be Banff’s best family ski resort and a handy place to warm up your mountain muscles. Skiers and snowboarders will find terrain for all levels, including spectacularly groomed runs and a large terrain park.

The ski area has the only night skiing in Banff National Park and an expanded tubing park if you are keen to try a fun and different way of cruising down the slopes.

Snowboarders and skiers swear by Sunshine Village’s natural snow, panoramic views, the casual intermediate slopes and access to true steeps. Just 20 minutes from Banff, and a Gondola ride up to the village, it’ll seem like an entirely different winter world. Cross the border into B.C. on the Great Divide Chair to enjoy powder stashes in the sheltered gullies.

With runs spread over four mountain faces, The Lake Louise Ski Area has views to die for and enviable slope conditions that change with the weather and direction of the sun. Warm up with a few groomers on the front side or challenge yourself on the double black-diamond backside bowls. The unique layout allows families and groups of varying abilities to ski together. Beginner, intermediate and expert runs are options from the top of nearly every lift.

The Town of Banff is truly unique. There is no other place in the world where you can find a vibrant community of artists, athletes, young families, long-term residents, outdoor enthusiasts, business owners, restaurateurs, hoteliers and students nestled in a national park. Located just 90 minutes west of Calgary international airport, Banff is full of modern amenities and more than enough accommodations, restaurants and activities to fit any vacation need. Banff is a premier destination for authentic hospitality, mountain culture, relaxation and amusement.

For vacationers seeking the purest of alpine experiences, Lake Louise is a protected mountain hamlet, 45 minutes west of Banff and offers close proximity to world-class hotels, postcard perfect lodges, dining options and incredible winter activities.

OTHER WINTER ACTIVITES

Après Ski: Banff’s vibrant après-ski scene offers a variety of experiences that will help you unwind after a long day at the hill. Choose from regionally inspired appetizers at a hotel lounge, a pint of locally made beer at the pub or a Swiss fondue next to a crackling fire. Banff is a ski town to the core – all it takes is walking the street to find an après-ski experience that’ll fit you like a custom boot.

Canyon freezes in winter to form a sparkling wall of ice. Pull on your ice cleats and take a guided tour. For the even more adventurous, take a jab at ice climbing with the help of an experienced guide or put on a pair of skates and glide across the frozen lake at Lake Louise.

Explore the Trails: Strap on some cross-country skis or snowshoes to access trails that reach spectacular viewpoints – whether on your own or on a guided tour. For something truly unique, take a guided dogsledding tour and try mushing the sled yourself!

Hitch a Ride: Nothing could be more special than sipping on a mug of hot cocoa as you ride through snow-filled trails on a horse-drawn sleigh.

Take a Soak: Open year-round, the Banff Upper Hot Springs are especially great for relaxing in winter. Treat yourself to a day at a spa facility in Banff or Lake Louise.

Slip and Slide: Grab the kids and head to the tube parks at Mount

Norquay or The Lake Louise Ski Resort and feel the fresh mountain air as you experience the thrill ride down the mountainside.

Cross Country Ski: Prefer a quiet glide through the wilderness at your own pace? The high elevations of Lake Louise create perfect snow conditions for one of the area’s best kept secrets: premier cross country-skiing. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely ski or a rigorous workout, cross-country skiing is a great way to explore the intimate corners of the Canadian Rockies and enjoy the serenity and stillness of winter.

Whether you’re looking for gentle groomers, big mountain bowls, or a leisurely trek through the snow-filled forest, let the powdery snow, epic scenery and authentic mountain hospitality draw you to Banff National Park this winter.

Page 24: Ultimate Ski Vacations

Known throughout the world for having light, dry, ‘easy-to-ski’ powder, paired beautifully with 2,000 hours of annual sunshine, skiers at Sun Peaks experience the real meaning of ‘bluebird powered days’.

Perhaps the only thing better than the consistent and reliable snow conditions is the slopeside village. The village sits cradled at the base of the three skiable mountains and offers high quality and reasonably priced ski-in/ski-out accommodation, which ultimately provides you with the most convenient ski experience anywhere.

Canada’s own Nancy Greene Raine even calls Sun Peaks home, and her favorite pastime is sharing her favorite spots on the mountain with guests. You can ski with her on most Saturdays and Sundays during her free mountain tours. Not many others can boast they skied with an Olympic Gold Medalist on their last ski holiday!

The resort has been named Canada’s Best Ski-in, Ski-out Village* and with 3,678 acres including 124 marked runs, there's terrain for every ability, including 12 designated glade areas and two alpine bowls. Other than the mighty Whistler, Sun Peaks’ ski area is the largest in BC.

Why should you choose Canada’s Alpine Village as your ski destination this season? Perhaps it’s the unparalleled snow quality and grooming that’s second to none. Perhaps it’s the welcoming village where guests become locals overnight, or the myriad of winter activities like dogsledding and ice skating. But whatever the reason, Sun Peaks delivers what it promises. In fact, it exceeds expectations with an entire community dedicated to your happiness. That’s why the resort can brag about having the highest returning guest “locals” rate in the business.

Located in the interior of BC with direct air access from Toronto through Kelowna and convenient one stop access direct to Kamloops, it’s closer than you think.

“Now that we have grandchildren, I appreciate even more how truly special Sun Peaks is. There’s something for everyone, from expert to the little ones. The Resort just keeps getting better.” – Nancy Greene Raine, Olympic Champion and Sun Peaks resident for 18 years

*Presented by Ski Canada Magazine, 2009

Imagine… almost 4,000 acres all to yourself. It’s time for you to discover a Canadian resort that’s an oasis of open slopes, no crowds, abundant powder and quality slopeside accommodations.
