Por esta razón, se ha evitado deliberadamente el planteamiento teórico y complejo, pero sin perder de vista los aspectos globales de los problemas hidrológicos prácticos.

El contenido de la obra se basa en el programa del curso semestral profesional de carreras como ingeniero civil, ingeniero agrónomo o ingeniero hidrólogo. Asimismo, es útil como introducción a cursos de posgrado y como obra de consulta para profesionales del área de geografía.

No obstante su carácter fundamental, se han incluido temas que usualmente no se imparten a nivel profesional, como el de nociones de hidrometeorología y elementos de una teoría de la infiltración, que es necesario impulsar en nuestro medio. El libro supone un conocimiento previo en matemáticas elementales y fundamentos de estadística. En

este último aspecto, sin embargo, es común que los cursos básicos de estadística en ingeniería tengan un enfoque ligeramente diferente al de la hidrología, por ello, la obra tiene como objetivo orientar al lector respecto de los conceptos fundamentales de probabilidad y estadística y sobre regresión y correlación.

El objetivo del libro es el modelado y análisis de sistemas de espera. Un sistema de espera es aquel en el que hay contienda por sus recursos, por lo que con frecuencia se forman colas de usuarios para el acceso a los recursos del sistema.

El objetivo principal del estudio es la evaluación de las prestaciones de este tipo de sistemas, por la vía analítica cuando se dispone de un modelo matemático sencillo, o por la vía de la simulación cuando éste es demasiado complejo y no se conocen técnicas matemáticas para resolverlo.
