MEET PREVIEW
Navy Invite Invite
After a successful start to the season, the Retrievers have a quick turn
around to their only local meet of the year, competing at the Navy Invite at the
Naval Academy Golf Course. The men are coming off a win at the America East
Preview Meet while the women are coming off beating two Conference teams.
With a tight grouping of only seven seconds, the trio of Eric Schuler,
Redatu Semeon, and Hassan Omar made quite an impact clumping three
runners in the top four to pace the Retrievers. Making that even more
impressive, is that it doesn’t include three of the top four Conference runners
from last year in Brandan McGee, Tommy Eldridge, and Jake Albino, all of which
could make the front of the pack even more formidable.
Andrew Smith and James Beacham look poised for a strong season after
Smith nearly set a personal best and Beacham smashed his personal best for
8,000 meters in route to 13th and 14th place finishes. Freshmen Pat Duboyce and
Jon Luckin also factored into the race finishing 15th and 21st respectively in their
first collegiate race and thus should improve considerably with experience.
While Nicole Dawson lead the way last meet, it could be a race to race
affair to see who will be the first runner across the line. Dawson, who finished
11th, should benefit with the extra kilometer of race distance and could
potentially run a personal best time for the 6,000 meter race. She was quickly
followed across the line by freshman Sarah Zielinski who ran well in her debut.
Cody Mezebish was only a few steps behind her to round out the top three.
Look for stronger performances out of returners Sarah Daly, Angel Bucci,
MK Kulp, and Julie Gessler. With all four getting a break from a rigorous month
of training, the energetic legs should show this time out. Similar improvements
should be expected out of the three additional freshmen that were in the top
ten for the Retrievers. Cindy Alms was the fourth Retreiver across the line while
fellow newcomers Sophia Cologer and Chelsea Vane ran personal best times on
a tough course to contribute.

Redatu Semeon
Nicole Dawson
UMBC Retriever Athletics
Putting in the Work
Last year Redatu Semeon had the dubious honor of being the fastest
Retriever ever not to make the Conference team having run 26:04 for 8,000
meters in the last meet. He started this year as the 2nd runner across the
line with a massive personal best time of 25:38.
Consistency Leads to Success
Every race last year, Nicole Dawson recorded a scoring position on the team.
During the outdoor season she became the leading 10k runner, earning a
spot at the ECAC Championships. She carried that momentum over to this
year, leading the Retrievers for the first time, with a 11th place finish.
