Based off the record setting performances from last weekend, one has to believe with stiffer competition and a big meet atmosphere that we could have just seen the tip of the iceberg in regards to what this outdoor season will hold for the UMBC Retrievers. Mercedes Jackson is beginning to make record setting a ho-hum affair after taking down the 100 meter and 200 meter records in what was supposed to be a low key home meet. Both marks put her most likely in the NCAA Preliminary Round, with the rest of the season spent on her honing craft and advancing to the Final Round. After blistering both the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes, watch for Kirsten Jones to add the outdoor 400 meter record to her dossier this weekend. Denny Long put in another solid round of performances in both the 100 meters and 200 meters, making it only a matter of time before he breaks onto the top 10 list in the 100 meters. The hurdles will highlight 110 meter specialist Trae Proctor and 400 meter specialist Paulette Fogle, both who are looking for breakout performances to shift their season into high gear. The long hurdles added a magnitude of depth when Mary Katherine Kulp debuted in the event and moved into the number five spot in the early season Conference rankings. The distance events will open up with the featured players opening up in their specialties. The 800 meters will be stacked with the duo of Sarah Daly and Cody Mezebish on the women’s side; and Andrew Smith and Andrew Keresztes on the men’s. All are capable of bettering or getting a position on the All Time Top Ten lists. The steeplechase will be a big event for the Retrievers when the #1, #5, and #6 All Time Performers in Brandan McGee, Vinny DiSalvo, and Redatu Semeon take the line. The end of the first night should end in a bang with all five runners looking for post season qualifications (IC4A/ECAC) in the 10,000 meter runs. For the women, freshmen Nicole Dawson and Harmony Roche finally get a chance to take on a distance suited to their strengths and should put their names on the All Time lists. Hassan Omar will lead the men, including #2 All Time TJ Cowing and newcomer Noah Hutton. Aboshioma Obemeata and Mo Drammeh will open their outdoor seasons in the triple jump and high jumps respectively while Ebonique Jones will open up in the long jump. The throws look to be the best source of school records after breaking three of the four men’s records. As Vincent Rentzsch continues his progression through his approach, his javelin continues to go further each weekend. With a more complete approach this weekend expect to see him cross over the 200 feet barrier. The hammer record took a beating last weekend at the hands of Thor Serafenas, who looks to be the next Retriever to garner a Preliminary mark, and could threaten the discus record as well. Yao Adantor will look to continue his successful run of meets in the shot put. Amanda Deller continues to build towards her eighth and final shot put title, but could add another dimension by continual improvement in the hammer, an event in which she set a personal best mark in last weekend. The highlights of the relays this weekend will be the women’s 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter, both of which can make a run at school records. Not to be overshadowed, but the men’s 4x100 meter relays could make a mark at the Conference level and the 4x400 meter relay could run a season’s best time In her first performances of the outdoor season, freshman D’Nique Phillip made an immediate mark with the 6 th fastest 100 meters and 3 rd fastest 200 meters in school history. And after beating indoor 400 meter school record holder Kirsten Jones to line this past weekend, she might give her a race to the school record in the 400 meters this weekend. In her first performances of the outdoor season, freshman D’Nique

Phillip made an immediate mark with the 6th fastest 100 meters and

3rd fastest 200 meters in school history. And after beating indoor 400 meter school record holder

Kirsten Jones to line this past weekend, she might give her a race

to the school record in the 400 meters this weekend.

After solid contributions during the cross country and indoor seasons, walk-on freshman Redatu Semeon made an immediate impact on the outdoor season with a #6 All Time Performance in the steeplechase. Having only had a fleeting experience of two races in the shorter 2,000 meter version during some odd high school meets, Semeon transitioned nicely to the longer version, battling for the lead most of the way. Having only been on the barriers a couple times before the meet, once can expect quick improvements in the event in his second outing this weekend.

After an early college career that saw him average between 48 and 51 feet on occasion, the new confines of UMBC have led to a range of consistency that has been 51 to 54 feet in his last few meets. After taking down the indoor school record in the shot put, he added the outdoor mark to his resume, surpassing the old record by a little under three feet. Adantor also moved onto the All Time lists in the discus and could move his way onto the hammer list by year’s end.
