Newsletter Term 1 Week 7 13 March 2018 Principal’s Message Who to see? Later this term [11 April] we will hold our Parent / Teacher interviews as one aspect of our reporting to parents commitments. Please consider your availability for this event. In the meantime, if you wish to discuss some aspect of your child’s time at school please ensure you discuss this with the class teacher first. Beyond the class teacher stage coordinators are a terrific source of information and advice. Stage coordinators are: Early Stg 1 - Miss. Katie Frew Stg 1 Mrs. Cass Dowdell Stg 2 - Mrs. Nicole Laauw Stg 3 Mrs. Angela Fleming Mrs White and I are also available should the class teacher or stage coordinator not be able to provide the required information. School uniform Our school has delightful uniform choices that include tunics, polo shirts, shorts, trousers and sports uniforms. It is important to remember that school uniforms should be worn daily. The only source of our uniform is through Lowes, Figtree Grove. It is my understanding there is a 20% sale on school uniforms this Thursday 15 March for those families who hold a Zero or Rewards card for Lowes. This would be an opportune time to purchase school uniforms at a reduced cost. Staff changes Last week I shared Mr. Hoy’s good news regarding his securing the substantive principal’s position at Waniora Public School. This week it is Mrs. Garnero’s turn. Michelle has made an immensely positive impact on students, community and staff during her four years with us at Unanderra Public. Her professional expertise and her positive personality will be sorely missed now that she has been successfully appointed through merit selection to the position of assistant principal at Lakelands Public School. The normal 10-day appeals period is required before the appointment takes effect. join me in congratulating Michelle on this wonderful professional opportunity. Our loss is most definitely Lakelands’ gain! School leaders Last week we held our school leaders induction assembly where our student leaders for 2018 were provided with their badges. It was terrific to have our school captains badged by their parents, a nice touch to the ceremony. I look forward to working alongside our student leaders I 2018. Our leaders are: School Captains School Vice Captains Matilda C-H and Jack Mc Freya T and Cooper B SRC Representatives Stg 3 - Amina A, Dylan D, Lili Mc, Daniel S, Payton K, Declan B, Olivia L, Viktor K Stg 2 – Indiana H, Jayden V, Emilia L, Phoenix H, Anna H, Will N, Freya K, Christian N House Captains House Vice Captains Skylah B Janaya B Brodie B Hamish C Jade J Amelia K Tiago J Hayley H Joshua M Tahlia O Zane M Bodie O Charlotte T Monika S Caleb S Max T Student supervision Please remember there remains no supervision of students prior to 8:30am each morning. While cleaners open the gates to our school far earlier, they are not responsible for students. Prior to 8:30am teachers and support staff are preparing for the day ahead. The first supervised duty by teachers commences from 8:30am. It is important parents and carers consider the safety of children prior to 8:30am by not leaving them at school before teacher supervision begins. NAPLAN Our school will participate in the traditional booklet version of NAPLAN in 2018. Please ensure all Year 3 and Year 5 students are available Tuesday 15 May – Thursday 17 May 2018. The NAPLAN is a ‘snapshot in time’ of student performance and I encourage all Year 3 and Year 5 students to participate. However, should you have reservations about your child’s capacity to sit the assessment, please discuss this with your child’s teacher first. P&C Last night we held the Unanderra P&C AGM. During the AGM all executive positions from the previous year are declared vacant and elections for the new year take place. Congratulations to our new look P&C Executive consisting of:

President Jennifer Lewin Vice Presidents Alison Mellor and Katrina Birch Secretary TBC Treasurer Joanne Egan

I would like to thank the 2017 P&C Executive, and the P&C in general, for their efforts ensuring our students, staff and community are well supported. I look forward to working closely with the 2018 Executive throughout this year. Please consider your availability for the next P&C meeting to be held Monday 9 April from 7pm in Room 20.

iHub

I can’t believe it is Week 7 already!

Kindergarten have begun borrowing and I thought it might be a good idea to remind everyone what

day their iHub day is so that they can remember to pack their library bags on that day!

Monday – 1/2D, 1/2M, 5/6F, 5/6M

Tuesday – KF, 5/6B, 5/6N

Wednesday – 1/2H, 3/4S, 3/4D, 3/4L

Thursday – KA, KK, 3/4B

Friday – 1/2W, 1/2C

In working towards building a reading culture at UPS, the iHub has introduced the ‘iHub Champion

Borrowers’ trophies. One for K-2 and one for 3-6. The class with the most people borrowing each

week, will be presented with a trophy to keep in their classroom. Renewing a book you are already

reading, counts!! Aside from the sheer joy of exercising the imagination, research shows reading for

pleasure improves literacy, social skills, health and learning outcomes. It gives people access to

culture and heritage and empowers them to become active citizens, who can contribute to economic

and social development.

To find out more, read the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) article to discover the value of reading for pleasure to increase empathy, enrich social relationships, reduce symptoms of depression and instil an overall sense of wellbeing.

Signing Your Child up for School Banking If you would like your child to participate in School Banking, they will need to have a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. This can be created online via the CBA web site or by attending a branch. If you have a deposit book and yellow wallet, simply put the money to be deposited into a pocket in the wallet, fill out a deposit slip and the stub and place the whole thing into the red banking bin in the school foyer BEFORE 9am each Tuesday. Banking wallets and deposit books will be returned to the student via their class teacher. We Need Help! We are looking for a new School Banking Coordinator or two to ensure that School Banking can continue to run smoothly at Unanderra Public School. The coordinator’s role involves taking turns with other coordinator/s to ensure the money is banked and to process the deposit slips online. If you’re available to help out, simply leave your contact details at the school office, in the red banking bin in the office foyer on a Tuesday, or call into the old uniform shop at 9am on a Tuesday. Enquiries can be directed via the school office, a note in the red banking bin or come and see us at 9am Tuesdays in the old uniform shop. School Banking Coordinators and volunteers, Jenny Evans, Jodien Mortlock, Nicole Martin and Joanne Egan.

SCHOOL FUN RUN COLOUR EXPLOSION

Our exciting event is coming up fast!

We are looking for parent helpers to assist us at our colour stations. What better way to get involved than to be front

Your help would be much appreciated.

P & C meeting: Our next meeting will be held on Monday 9 April at 7pm. Following this, all further meetings will then

be on the first Monday of the month at 7pm. All new members and new ideas are always welcome.

Your new Executive Committee are:

President: Jen Lewin

Vice President: Katrina Birch

Vice President: Alison Mellor

the office if required.

Entertainment Book: The 2018/2019 edition will soon be available. After discussions at our meeting, we have

decided the best way to showcase this book is by sending it home for families to look through. This book is a great

way to save loads of money so be sure to check it out. Will keep you updated on when you can expect to receive

your copy.

School Hats: If your child needs a new hat, these are available in the canteen for $11.

With this being my last newsletter edition, I would like to take this time to thank everyone for their support during my

time as President.

Although challenging at times, I have enjoyed it, as well as supporting our school to provide for our children.

Due to myself now undertaking fulltime work, I have chosen to take on the lesser role of Vice President.

Our new President, Jen Lewin, will do an amazing job and I look forward to assisting her where I can, along the way.

Katrina Birch, P & C President
