Product Terminology

BODYThe unthreaded portion of the shank of a threaded fastener.

FILLETConcave junction between the head and shank.

HEADA headed fastener has one end enlarged into a preformed shape.

OVERALL LENGTHThe Overall length of a headed fastener is the distance from intersection between the bearing surface & the ExtremeEnd point fastener, measured parallel to the axis of the fastener. The length of a headless fastener is the distance from one extreme end to the other end, also measured parallel to the fastener.

NOMINAL SIZEIt is the basic major diameter of the thread.

SHANKThe Shank Length is minimum length of the unthreadedcylindrical portion of the shank.

MINOR DIAMETERThe smallest diameter of a thread.

PITCHThe distance from a point on a screw thread to the corresponding point on the next screw thread.

PITCH DIAMETERIs the diameter of a theoretical cylinder that passes through the threads at a position that the width of thread ridge and thread groove are equal.

ROOTThe Root of the thread is the bottom of the groove between two flank.

SHANK LENGTH

Thread TerminologyTHREAD LAPSAre surface defects caused by the folding over of metal in the thread.

THREAD RUNOUTis the area between the thread and shank or head of the fasteners The Unbrako radiused root runout provides a smooth from that distributes stress and increases the life of the fastener considerably.

THREAD STRESS AREAThe area of a cylindrical bar of the same material and properties as the thread and capable of supporting the same ultimate tensile load.

Mechanical Terminology

CREEPDeformation that occurs over a period of time when a fastener is subjected to a constant stress at a constant high temperature.

ELONGATION is the increase in the thread length or a fastener that would occur during tightening or loading.

ENDURANCE LIMITThe strength level below which a bolt or joint member will have an essentially infinite life under cyclic loading.

FATIGUE LIFEis the number of cycles of fluctuating stress and strain of a specified nature that a fastener will sustain before failure occurs.

IMPACT TESTA test to determine the energy absorbed in fracturing a test bar at high velocity.

PROOF LOADis a specified test load which a fastener must withstand without any indication of failure.

PROOF TESTis any specified test required for a fastener to indicate that is suitable for the purpose intended.

ROCKWELL HARDNESS (Hrc)This is a specific method of measuring the hardness of a fastener. The “c” denotes a specific size indenter which penetrates the surface of the prepared specimen.

SHEAR JOINTA joint in which the fastener has the load applied across the axis and which tends to sever it.

SHEAR STRENGTHThis is the maximum strength of the fastener when it is subjected to shear (transverse) loading.

TENSILE STRENGTHIs the force or stress required to break a fastener when the force or stress is applied in straight tension.

TENSION JOINTA joint in which the fastener has the load applied to thelongitudinal direction and which tends to elongate it.

TORSIONis the twisting force applied to a fastener during tightening.

YIELD STRENGTHThis is the maximum force or stress that can be applied to a fastener without permanent (plastic) deformation occurring.

During the 1960's, Dr. Junker while working in Unbrako's Koblenz facility in Germany completed his seminal work on the self-loosening behavior of bolted joints. This in turn led to the design of the original Durlok® anti-vibration nuts & bolts. The Durlok 12.9 nuts & bolts are designed for high-performance critical applications and do not require a washer. However, our industrial OEM customers requested a Durlok product in washer form for applications where it was deemed desirable to use a washer in the joint design. Thus we began researching and developed Unbrako's new Durlok locking wedge washer.

The Durlok® washer when used in combination with standard hex helps achieve self-locking properties. It is an anti-vibration solution that not only prevents bolted joint failure, but also enables the bolted joint to retain its pre-load, thus reducing maintenance requirements. The test regime highlighted this feature (fig 1).

ROLLED THREADS : Rolling threads results in best quality highest-strength thread because of; (1) more accurate and uniformthread dimensions, giving a better fit between threadedparts and fewer concentrated loads at points of misfit;(2) smoother thread surfaces &, thus, fewer scratchesand other markings to initiate cracks, or galling; and(3) higher yield, tensile, & shear properties to betterwithstand service loads.

ECONOMY : Fewer high strength bolts are requiredthan M. S. bolts and rivets. Drilling of close holes isnot required. Overall weight the structure will be verylight.

SIMPLICITY : A minimum of skill is required in tighteningand the operators need only to follow a few simple rules.

TWIST-OFF TYPETENSION CONTROL STRUCTURAL BOLT Tension control structural bolt is an easy to install heavy duty bolt used in steel frame construction. The combination of high tensile strength and ductility results in a structural bolt that can be employed in almost all steel work connections. This high strength positive tension shear bolt has its own built in torque control device.

Unbrako electric shear wrench is used for tightening the bolt. The outer socket rotates the nut until the torque control groove in the spline shears off, thereby achieving proper bolt tension. This shear area is designed to facilitate the ideal seating torque requirements for the installation of the bolt. No specialist operator expertise is required as the correct installation is automatically realized through the design of the bolt.

Installation Procedure:

Unbrako Electric wrenches are available with various socket extensions to match different sizes of Unbrako Tension Control Bolts, allowing easy & accurate installation.

EXTENSION SOCKETS(Step 1)• Place bolt through hole in the joining members. Attach washer & run up nut finger tight to the working members.

(Step 2)• Fit the inner socket of the drive unit firmly over the bolt tip (spline). • Engage the outer socket over the nut by pushing the shear wrench. • Pull lever switch to on. The outer socket rotates the nut. As the tensile load increases the torque tension in the bolt also increases until the bolt reaches its designed shear strength and shears in the designated portion of the bolt.

(Step 3)• Turn off wrench when bolt tip (Spline) shears off.

(Step 4)• Pull the shear wrench back to remove outer socket from the nut. • Pull the eject lever on the wrench to discharge the severed bolt tip (Spline) from the inner socket
