FBI Pushes Parents to Make ID Kits for Children (Private Sector Resource) Federal authorities say that during the spring non-family child abductions increase by 36 percent Thatrsquos why the FBI is urging parents to have an identity kid for their child The kits could be the best defense for your childmdashand theyrsquore free

First take a photo of your child and make sure they look the way they usually do every day Next write all of their important information on an index cardmdashincluding height weight hair and eye color Be sure to include anything that is distinct Last take a cotton swab and brush the inside of the childrsquos cheek let it air dry and seal it in an envelope This provides a DNA sample of your child

ldquoYou put them in a packet Keep it where you would keep your most important papers That way if your child should ever be abducted you have what law enforcement needsrdquo There are kits available online but parents should never have to pay for one httpwwwnbc4icomcmhnewslocalarticlefbi_pushes_parents_to_make_id_kits_for_children14813 Analyst Note To access one of the many free Child ID Kits online visit httpwwwregisteredoffenderslistorgchild-id-kitpdf Intelligence agency hosts kids Web sites (Resource) The Office of the Director of National Intelligence is hosting what it calls the Intelligence Agency Community Kids Page The page offers roughly a dozen links to US intelligence and law enforcement agency sites where children can learn about the institutional layout and various skill sets of each department For example the NSA offers a primer on cryptology led by a collection of trademarked characters like Crypto Cat and Decipher Dog Youngsters can race through timed puzzles and try their hand at photo analysis with the CIA The National Geospatial Intelligence Agency allows kids to play Image Ace with Terry Firma and Wanda World The Defense Intelligence Agency clearly knows its market Go here to blast away at incoming jets Department of Homeland Security concentrates on natural disaster preparedness explaining topics from tornadoes to tsunamis relegating terrorism to the bottom of the page and wisely leaving it to parents or teachers to go into further detail The State Department which probably had little say in being lumped in with the others invites future diplomats to play Where in the World is the Secretary following Hillary Clinton around the world and clicking on a map of her state visits for more information video and photos on each trip Its also a good place to see how the other half lives with Meet the Children of Diplomats httpnewscnetcom8301-13639_3-10214182-42html Analyst Note the ODNI Intelligence agency Community Kidrsquos Page can be accessed at httpwwwdnigovkidshtm

Hallmark e-card virus considered severe (Cybercrime TTP) Millions of online greeting cards are sent every year and now a new virus is targeting those who receive them E-cards have become a fast fun way to keep in touch But a new virus - which pretends to be a Hallmark greeting card - is sweeping the country and experts are calling the threat severe At first glance the fraudulent e-mail which in one case came from ecardshallmarkcom looks pretty normal It says You have received a Hallmark e-card from your friend to see it click the attachment in this cased named postcardzip While the virus is constantly changing its now making its way to mid-Missouri Computer experts said the virus can be traced to Slovakia in Eastern Europe and its sole purpose is to steal your financial information like your banking PIN number Its going to slowly infect core Windows files so that you dont only know that its there Is your e-card is legit While this might seem like bad news for people who love online greeting cards there are a number of precautions in place 1 Hallmark e-cards never require a download and are not exe files If your card tells you to download it - ditch it 2 Hallmark e-cards will always come from the sender not Hallmarkcom If you dont recognize the sender theres a good chance its not real 3 All Hallmark e-cards have a confirmation number which you can type in at Hallmarks Web site to check if your card is legit 4 Notifications will include a link to the E-Card on Hallmarkcom as well as a URL pasted into the e-mail 5 The URL will begin with httphallmarkcom followed by characters that identify the individual e-card 6 Hallmark never requires and e-card recipient to enter a user name or password or any other personal info to retrieve their card 7 If you suspect youve downloaded a virus you can file a complaint at the Internet Crime Complaint Center wwwic3gov httpwwwconnectmidmissouricomnewsnews_storyaspxid=268883 FBI and States Vastly Expand DNA Databases (Resource) Until now the federal government genetically tracked only convicts But starting this month the FBI will join 15 states that collect DNA samples from those awaiting trial and will collect DNA from detained immigrants The FBI with a DNA database of 67 million profiles expects to accelerate its growth rate from 80000 new entries a year to 12 million by 2012 - a 17-fold increase Law enforcement officials say that expanding the DNA databanks to include legally innocent people will help solve more violent crimes They point out that DNA has helped convict thousands of criminals and has exonerated more than 200 wrongfully convicted people Law enforcement officials say that DNA extraction upon arrest is no different than fingerprinting at routine bookings and that states purge profiles after people are cleared of suspicion The police say that the potential hazards of genetic surveillance are worth it because it solves crimes and because DNA is more accurate than other physical evidence Enforcement officials contend that DNA is blind to race Federal profiles include little more information than the DNA sequence and the referring police agency Subjects names are usually kept by investigators Aa former prosecutor for Alameda County Calif and an adviser to crime laboratories said DNA demographics reflected the criminal population Even if an innocent mans DNA was included in a genetic database he said it would come to nothing without a crime scene sample to match it If you havent done anything wrong you have nothing to fear he said httpwwwnytimescom20090419us19DNAhtml_r=1amppagewanted=print
