o one day the s$illeryscalery alligator with the hu=<s on his tail and his
brother another s$illeryscalery cha< whose tail was double ointed were ta$ing a
wal$ through the woods together ust as Uncle Wiggily was doing.

wouldn@t you li$e a nice rabbit
-ndeed - would answered the doubleointed tail @gator who could wobble his
9li<<ers both ways. And - $now o9 no nicer rabbit than Uncle Wiggily *ongears.

/99 they crawled through the woods and <retty soon they ca=e to a willow tree
where the branches grew so low down that they loo$ed li$e a curtain that had
unwound itsel9 o99 the roller when the cat hangs on it.

scalery alligator with bu=<s on his tail.
The ery <lace agreed his brother.
o they hid behind the thic$ branches o9 the tree which had lea9ed out 9or early
s<ring and there the two bad creatures waited.
5ust be9ore this Uncle Wiggily hi=sel9 had started out 9ro= his hollow stu=<
bungalow to wal$ in the woods and across the 9ields as he did eery day.

6ow while the two bad alligators were tal$ing this way they did not <ay =uch
attention to Uncle Wiggily. They held hi= so tightly in their claws that he could not
get away but he could use his own <aws and when the two bad creatures were
tal$ing right in each other@s 9ace and using big words Uncle Wiggily reached u< and
cut o99 a <iece o9 willow wood with the bar$ on.
And then still when the @gators were dis<uting and not loo$ing the bunny uncle
=ade hi=sel9 a whistle out o9 the willow tree stic$. He loosened the bar$ which ca=e
o99 li$e a $id gloe and then he cut a <lace to blow his breath in and another <lace tolet the air out and so on until he had a ery 9ine whistle indeed al=ost as loud
blowing as those the <olice=en hae to sto< the auto=obiles 9ro= s<lashing =ud on
you so a trolley car can bu=< into you.
-@ll tell you what we@ll do said the hu=<tail alligator at last. ince you won@t
let =e carry hi= ho=e and - won@t let you let@s both carry hi= together. 8ou ta$e
hold o9 hi= on one side and -@ll ta$e the other.

And then and there he blew such a loud shrill blast on his willow tree whistle that
the alligators had to <ut their <aws oer their ears. And when they did that they had tolet go o9 bunny uncle. He had his tall sil$ hat down oer his ears so it didn@t =atter
how loudly he blew the whistle. He couldn@t hear it.

To call the little ants and lightning bugs to school s<o$e Uncle Wiggily and

<ots and <ans. Uncle Wiggily *ongears the rabbit gentle=an who lied in the
bungalow sat u< in bed haing been awa$ened by the noise and he said:
- wonder who can be tal$ing said Uncle Wiggily. - =ust loo$ around. o he
loo$ed u< in the air but though he heard the leaes whis<ering he $new they had not
s<o$en. Then he loo$ed to the right to the le9t in 9ront and behind but he saw no one.
Then he loo$ed down and right at his 9eet was a clu=< o9 blue iolet 9lowers.
Did you s<ea$ as$ed Uncle Wiggily o9 the iolets.
8es answered one who had been 9inding 9ault. - was telling =y sisters and
brothers that we are o9 no use in the world. We ust grow u< here in the woods where
no one sees us and we neer can hae any 9un. - want to be a big red rose and grow
in a garden.
/h =yB cried Uncle Wiggily. - neer heard o9 a iolet turning into a rose.
Then the =other iolet s<o$e and said:
- tell =y little girl9lower that she ought to be ha<<y to grow here in the nicewoods in the green =oss where it is so cool and =oist. #ut she does not see= to be
ha<<y nor are so=e o9 the other iolets.
Well that isn@t right Uncle Wiggily said $indly. - a= sure you iolets can do
so=e good in this world. 8ou are <retty to loo$ at and nice to s=ell and that is =ore
than can be said o9 so=e things.

in the world and see things.

Uncle Wiggily thought 9or a =inute and then he said:

<utting so=e cool =oss around their roots and when they had said goodby to the=other iolet away they went traeling with the bunny uncle.

Well ust a little larger wouldn@t hurt any re<lied ;iss Fuy Wuy. -@ll cutthe= 9or you and she did with her scissors. For Uncle Wiggily had to wear his tall
sil$ hat with his ears stic$ing u< through holes cut in it. His ears were too large to go
under the hat and he could not ery well 9old the= down.
There now - guess -@= all right to go 9or a wal$ in the woods said the rabbit
gentle=an ta$ing another loo$ at hi=sel9 in the glass. -t was not a <roud loo$ you
understand. Uncle Wiggily ust wanted to loo$ right and <ro<er and he wasn@t at all
stuc$ u< een i9 his ears were but he couldn@t hel< that.
o o99 he started wondering what sort o9 an adenture he would hae that day.He <assed the <lace where the blue iolets were growing in the green =ossKthe sa=e
iolets he had used to =a$e 6urse 5ane@s blueing water 9or her clothes the other day
as - told you. And the iolets were glad to see the bunny uncle.
Then Uncle Wiggily =et Grand9ather Goosey Gander the nice old goose
gentle=an and the two 9riends wal$ed on together tal$ing about how =uch corn=eal
you could buy with a lolly<o< and all about the best way to eat 9ried ice crea=
carrots.
