PERSPECTIVES

Preserve and promotenational prestige and integrity

Tuesday, 4 September, 2012

At present, there is a growing trend amongthe people towards adoring alien culture.Making breakthrough in a series of core andkey technologies plus the superiority in wealth, some big nations are making an attempt tooverwhelm developing countries like Myanmarpolitically, socially and economically, whiletrying to export their culture and traditions tothe latter.

Youths are found to be under the influenceof alien culture, idea, expression and lifestylesince they are copying the imported music, finearts, song and dance and modes of dress.Trying to keep pace with changes anddevelopments of the global nations is a goodsign. But they are required to make their idea, knowledge and way of thinking sensible andappropriate to keep their culture, traditionsand customs alive and dynamic.

As the new generation youths are a sourceof great strength for the country going forward, they should remain vigilant against thecomplication of alien culture, traditions andcustoms that are contrary to Myanmar culture.Failure to preserve the national culture maylead to undermining national prestige andintegrity, and that may also result in thedisappearance of the nation and people.

The infiltration of alien culture into thenation has grown from a lesser-known problemto a major cultural challenge. With a growingpopularity in alien culture and tradition, preservation of culture and tradition appearsto be a more pressing issue for a nation or arace, and it is like a new wave of thought for thefuture of the nation.

The elimination of alien culture entrenchedin the country is both an urgent priority and along-term project that requires thecommitment of all. And it is incumbent upon allthe citizens to equip themselves with a greatsense of responsibility, solidarity andrationality. Only then, will they be able topreserve and promote their national prestigeand integrity.

instigated by some quartersto turn it into religious andracial issue, hence resultingin escalation of sectarianviolence and lawless criminalacts. As a result of the violence, there were loss of lives andproperties on bothcommunities.

Recalling 1812 battle, Putin calls for unity in RussiaBORODINO, 3 Sept —

President Vladimir Putin madea rousing call for unity amongRussia’s diverse ethnic andreligious groups on Sundayas he led commemorations ofa battle 200 years ago that ledto the defeat of NapoleonBonaparte. Standing by amonument at the scene of the1812 Battle of Borodino, 120km (75 miles) west of Moscow,Putin delivered a speechextolling the virtues ofpatriotism that enabledRussia to repel the Frencharmy in 1812.

Back as president sinceMay, Putin faces more openopposition in big cities thanat any time since he first roseto power in 2000, and apersistent insurgency in theNorth Caucasus. For thesecond time in five days hecalled for unity, underlininghis concern that theinsurgency could spread andthreaten the integrity ofRussia, home to manynationalities and religions.“Only when Russia’s nationswere united, were together, they achieved the best resultsin the development of theirfatherland,” Putin toldRussian and foreign

dignitaries, including formerFrench president ValeryGiscard d’Estaing.

“By and large patriotism, which was the basis of all ourmajor victories, comes downto the unity of the Russiannation.” Putin also evokedthe Battle of Borodino to rallyRussians behind him in hissuccessful presidentialelection bid last winter. Theinsurgency in the NorthCaucasus, more than a decadeafter Putin toppled a separatistgovernment in Chechnya, could also undermine unity inother parts of Russia. Thekilling of a Muslim cleric in

July in the central province ofTatarstan, in Russia’sheartland, showed violencemay be spreading to otherregions.

The Battle of Borodinoon 7 September, 1812,remembered by Russians asan epic victory, iscommemorated in LevTolstoy’s novel “War andPeace”. Neither side won adecisive victory in the battleand tens of thousands ofsoldiers were killed on bothsides before the Russianswithdrew and abandonedMoscow to the French.

Science & Technology Science & Technology Science & TechnologySamsung’s crisis culture: a driver

and a drawback

SEOUL, 3 Sept—In his1997 book, Samsung ChairmanLee Kun-hee wrote that asuccessful company needs a“heightened sense of crisis”,so that it always looks aheadeven when it’s doing well, andneeds to be able to respond tochange.

It’s a credo that has drivenSamsung Electronics tobecome the world’s biggesttechnology firm by revenue—it sells more televisions, smartphones and memory

chips than anyone else - andmakes the group a must-visitcase study for a stream ofChinese firms seeking to tapthe secrets of Korean success.

But, in the wake of lastmonth’s damaging US patentruling, which Samsung hassaid it will appeal—theKorean group was fined morethan $1 billion after a juryfound it had copied keyfeatures of Apple Inc’s iPhone—the group’s top-downcommand structure and

decision-making process areblamed for stifling creativity.

What’s been good forgetting things done quickly, such as making bold decisionson big investments in chipsand display screens, may notnow best suit a company thatneeds to shift from being a ‘fastfollower’—quick to matchothers’ products—to aninnovator.

Within Samsung, wheresome designers feeloverlooked and undermined, there are calls for a change oftack. The ‘constant crisis’ hasworked well, helping Samsungovertake Japanese technologybrands Sony, Sharp andPanasonic in chips, TVs anddisplays, end Nokia’s decade-long supremacy in handsetsand overtake Apple insmartphones. But that has comewith a big reputational hit—that Samsung makes knock-offproducts.—Reuters

Scientists test new marine robothurricane-hunters

MEXICO CITY, 3 Sept—As Tropical Storm Isaac wason its path through theCaribbean before becoming ahurricane in the Gulf of Mexicothis week, US scientists weretesting an experimental newweather spy tool—anunmanned, marine robotabout the size of a surfboardthat can gather storm data atsea level.

A National Oceanic andAtmospheric Administration(NOAA)research laboratoryin Miami sent the “WaveGlider,” a floating platform ofsensors with an underwaterstabilizer christened Alex, intoocean waters about 100 milesnorth of Puerto Rico last weekto try to intercept Isaac.

“Isaac did not barrel rightover it,” said Alan Leonardi, deputy director of NOAA’sAtlantic Oceanographic andMeteorological Laboratory inMiami, after the storm passed

to the south of the islandbefore turning north andmaking landfall near NewOrleans as a Category 1hurricane.

“But Isaac being the sizestorm it is, the Wave Gliderwas able to collect data fromthe outer rain bands. We can’tsteer a hurricane, but we didget good data out of it.”

A few days later, scientists got a second lookat Isaac, from another WaveGlider—named G2—on aseparate oil and gas missionin the Gulf of Mexico.

The eye of Isaac passed

barely 60 miles east of G2,enabling it to collect valuableocean data, includingevidence of a dramatic drop inwater temperature, “sugges-ting that Isaac was vacuum-ing the heat from the Gulf,”according to its manufa-cturers, Liquid Robotics, based in Sunnyvale, Cali-fornia.

Android phone makers back platform but consider other optionsBERLIN, 3 Sept—Some

phonemakers are quietlyexploring alternatives to theAndroid operating systemimplicated in the Samsung-Apple ruling, industrywatchers say, despite theirpublic pronouncements theyare sticking with thetechnology.

Last week, a US courtruled Samsung’s Androiddevices were violating Applepatents—a major blow to theleading mobile softwareplatform because it couldlead to sales bans and highlicensing fees.

The impact could alsohit smaller vendors that useAndroid like HTC, ZTE, andSony. Android is used in morethan two thirds of smartphones. Huawei, Sony,Lenovo and ZTE—which alluse Android extensively—told Reuters they werecontinuing to bet on theGoogle’s platform despite theruling.

“(The ruling) is notrelevant to what we aredoing,” said Chris Edwards, chief of ZTE’s businessdevelopment in Europe.

But as the mobile marketmatures and more patentcases look likely, some makersare looking at the alternatives.

Samsung, which hasused a number of platformsbut now mostly usesAndroid, announced a newphone running onMicrosoft’s new WindowsPhone 8 software at aconsumer technologyconference on Wednesday, sneaking ahead of a hotly-

anticipated launch of aNokia-Windows phone duenext week.

Shares in Nokia, whichhas partnered with Windowsand is its main user, jumpedafter the Samsung ruling onexpectations it might be a saferlegal bet than Androidmakers.

The California jury saidSamsung infringed six ofseven Apple patents in thecase, including technologythat recognizes whether oneor two fingers are on thescreen, the front surface ofthe phone and the design ofscreen icons, which is a clearreference to Google’stechnology.

After the verdict, Googlesaid that most of the patentsinvolved “don’t relate to thecore Android operatingsystem.” Android was usedin 68 percent of allsmartphones sold lastquarter, with Samsung makingalmost half of them, whileMicrosoft had 3 percentmarket share.

The balance of power isunlikely to shift quickly asthis season’s new phoneswere all made before the ruling.

Sony launched threeAndroid phones this week atIFA, Europe’s largestconsumer electronics fair.Chinese phone maker Huaweilaunched four.

“We have made ourchoice,” said Lars-ChristianWeissewange, vice presidentat Huawei’s phone unit, adding that consumers weremaking the platform choicefor them by picking Android

phones. Sony said the rulingwas not impacting itsbusiness.

“This is probably notimpacting consumerthinking,” Gianfranco Lanci, chief of Lenovo’s Europeanoperations, said on sidelinesof the conference.

But behind closed doors, companies are looking atalternative routes should theruling impact ripple wider out, said several industry insiders.

“Today, all Androidvendors are considering theirsoftware options,” said PeteCunningham, an analyst atresearch firm Canalys.

Samsung’s brief, surprise launch onWednesday of the world’sfirst smartphone running onWindows Phone 8, should beinterpreted as muscle flexing, analysts said.

However, it should notbe seen as a firm move awayfrom Android as the modelwill likely struggle to standout even among the otherWindows phones, said MalikSaadi, analyst at research firmInforma.

Illustrating the high

interest at stake are thebehind-the-scene meetingsof Google’s and Apple’schiefs Larry Page and TimCook on the patents.

Despite its small marketshare, Windows Phone is stillthe largest alternative toAndroid as Apple andBlackberry maker RIM havenot made their platformsavailable for other handsetmakers.

At the same time, vendorsare pretty much stuck withAndroid as Windows is waybehind in terms ofapplications on offer, offeringjust 100,000 apps against halfa million each on Android andApple. “Microsoft needs tocreate a developer environ-ment for the Window Phone, which is growing, but stilltrails behind the others,” saidRoberta Cozza, analyst atGartner.

Attracting developers isdifficult with tiny marketshares. Navigation firmTomTom launched an apprunning on Android thisweek but said it was notplanning a Windows app.

Bernanke says Fed ready to act but shorton specifics

JACKSON HOLE, 3 Sept—Federal Reserve ChairmanBen Bernanke on Friday leftthe door wide open to afurther easing of monetarypolicy, saying thestagnation in the US labourmarket was a “graveconcern,” but he stoppedshort of providing a clearsignal of imminent action.

His stark languagegave a temporary lift to USstocks, but economistswalked away from the Fedchairman’s remarks stilldivided over whether thecentral bank would launch afresh round of bondpurchases at its upcomingmeeting in September.

Bernanke said the FedFederal Reserve

Chairman Ben Bernanke

had to weigh the costs aswell as the benefits of moremonetary stimulus, although he hinted the costswere likely worthwhile.

“As we assess thebenefits and costs ofalternative policyapproaches ... we must notlose sight of the dauntingeconomic challenges thatconfront our nation,”Bernanke said at the KansasCity Fed’s annual JacksonHole symposium.

“Taking due account ofthe uncertainties and limitsof its policy tools, the FederalReserve will provideadditional policyaccommodation as neededto promote a stronger

economic recovery andsustained improvement inlabor market conditions in acontext of price stability.”

That was a somewhatweaker hint of policy easingthan the minutes of the Fed’slast policy meeting haddelivered, but Bernanke’sdour economic assessment

left few doubts where hissympathy lay.

“The stagnation of thelabour market in particular isa grave concern not onlybecause of the enormoussuffering and waste ofhuman talent it entails, butalso because persistentlyhigh levels of unemploymentwill wreak structural damageon our economy that couldlast for many years,”Bernanke said.

Financial markets see-sawed in the wake ofBernanke’s comments. USstocks closed roughly wherethey were before Bernankespoke, but yields on USgovernment bonds hit athree-week low inanticipation of Fed actionand the US dollar fell againstboth the euro and the yen.

The relationshipbetween Israel and Egypt, who signed a peace treaty in1979 ending nearly threedecades of battles, have hadtheir ups and downs. For the

past 15 years, under the reignof former president HosniMubarak, high-level security, diplomatic and economiccooperation between the twocountries intensified.

However, personalrelations tourism between theneighbouring nationslanguished, due to a “coldpeace” which sawprofessional unions andother agencies impose aseries of sanctions againstanyone visiting the Jewishstate.

Additionally, theoutbreak of the so-calledArab Spring in Cairo alsobrought out visceralresentment of Israel by manyEgyptian residents, including

a ransacking of the Israeliembassy by an enragedcrowd.

Extremists sabotaged anatural gas pipe supplyinggas to Israel some 14 times, and, with the rise of the MuslimBrotherhood into power,Israeli officials feareddisintegrating diplomatic ties, due to the groups entrenchedopposition to Israel’sexistence. However, whenMuslim extremists carried outan attack on the Egypt-Israelborder a month ago killing 17Egyptian policemen, bothcountries’ security forcescoordinated in fighting themutual threat in the SinaiPeninsula.

The Russian govern-ment had drawn a blueprintfor boosting its industrialsector and exports of high-tech products in the Far Eastregion, Ivashentsov said.

NASHVILLE, 3 Sept—Asthe remnants of HurricaneIsaac moved east on Sunday, bringing with it a wet LabourDay holiday weekend, thestorm’s impact was still beingfelt in Louisiana, where morethan a hundred thousandpeople were still withoutpower.

Entergy, Louisiana’slargest power provider, saidabout 160,000 of theLouisiana homes andbusinesses it serves remainedwithout electricity, leavingthem without airconditioning undersweltering temperatures.

The storm, which wasdowngraded from hurricanestrength last week, is headedalong the drought-strickenOhio Valley, which is due tosee heavy rains on Monday, the Labour Day holiday.

From the spine of the

Appalachian Mountains onwest, downpours andthunderstorms could disruptoutdoor holiday activities, especially on Mondayafternoon and early evening, said Carl Erickson, ameteorologist withAccuWeather.com.

“People might be ableto sneak some plans in there, but they’re going to have towatch the sky,” Erickson said.Storms are likely to continuein the northeast through theearly part of the week.

President BarackObama is scheduled to visitLouisiana on Monday — oneday before the DemocraticNational Convention kicksoff in Charlotte, NorthCarolina. The White Househas said Obama will visit firstresponders and survey thedamage from Hurricane Isaac.

Isaac was the first

hurricane to strike the UnitedStates this year and it hit NewOrleans almost exactly sevenyears after Hurricane Katrinadevastated the city, causingan estimated 1,800 deaths.

At least five deaths inLouisiana and two inneighboring Mississippiwere blamed on Isaac andboth states suffered fromwidespread flooding, authorities said.

Isaac was expected to bea mixed blessing for thedrought-parched Midwestfarm belt, since experts saidits rains came too late for thisseason’s crop of corn andmost soybeans.

The worst drought innearly half a century remainsdeeply entrenched acrossnearly two thirds of the UnitedStates.

Isaac’s rains could helpspeed up pasture recovery, however, and get the USwinter wheat crop off to agood start.

Isaac lingered over NewOrleans for the better part oftwo days, providing a firstand successful test of thecity’s new $14.5 billionflood-control systemassembled after Katrina.Areas outside those floodprotections fared worse.

George was the last giant tortoise of hiskind, the sole surviving member of a speciesfrom La Pinta, one of the smallest islands inthe Galapagos. He was found in 1972 and hadbecome a conservation icon for Ecuador’sGalapagos Islands. He was estimated to beover 100 years old.

“This morning the park ranger in chargeof looking after the tortoises found Lonesome

George (and) his body was motionless,” saidthe head of the park, Edwin Naula. “His lifecycle came to an end.” Giant Galapagostortoises can live up to 200 years and wereamong the many species that helped CharlesDarwin formulate his theory of evolution.

The park said they had planned anecropsy to determine what caused George’sdeath, after which they would considerembalming his body so that he could still beon display. The park gets over 180,000 visitorsa year with George being one of the biggestattractions. The islands also pull in celebrities;Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie visited theGalapagos recently.

Scientists had been trying to get Georgeto mate since 1993 and introduced two femalesof a different subspecies into his pen. Bothpartners laid eggs twice, but they were allinfertile.

Rodgers left to ponder Liverpool striker shortageLONDON, 3 Sept—The

hot seat at one of England’spowerhouses was alreadyfeeling a little uncomfortablefor Liverpool managerBrendan Rodgers on Sundayafter a 2-0 home defeat byArsenal left him reflecting onthe club’s worst start to aleague campaign for 50 years.

Four months after

gaining plaudits for guidingPremier League newcomersSwansea City to 11th placewith an eye-catching brandof football, the NorthernIrishman has plenty ofproblems to solve if Liverpoolare to challenge for a top-fourplace.

The most pressing ofthem is a lack of goals.

Luis Suarez has provedprofligate this season andFabio Borini, signed from ASRoma, ran around to littleeffect before beingsubstituted against Arsenal.

The fact that he wasreplaced by Stewart Downing,a shot-shy winger, hardlyimpressed the Anfield faithfulstill scratching their heads asto why England striker AndyCarroll was loaned to WestHam United with noreplacement signed.

While Liverpool enjoyedspells of the kind ofpossession football Rodgerspreached at Swansea, too

often moves ended in cul-de-sacs or fizzled out in the finalthird.

Rodgers acknowledgedthe transfer window had lefthim with a lack of options upfront.

“It’s something that’sgone now,” he toldLiverpool’s website. “We allknow we neededreinforcements and theplayers needed help, but thewindow is shut.

“We can’t do anythingabout it now. My onlyconcentration is with theplayers that are here andthey’ve been fantastic. They’ve given me absolutelyeverything every day and Icouldn’t ask for any more fromthem.

“We’ve got what we’vegot. A lot of young playersare going to get anopportunity.” “What hashappened has happened,we’ll reflect on it as a club andhopefully come January and

the next window we cantransition the group thatallows us to compete.”

While the opening daydefeat by West BromwichAlbion and Sunday’s loss toArsenal have beendisappointing, a 2-2 draw withchampions Manchester Citysuggested that Rodgers’ sidewill not be languishing nearthe bottom for too long.

“We’ll get better as ourseason progresses,” he said.

“It was always going tobe a difficult start. I have aninherent belief in this way ofworking, and I’ve had successwith it. Over time here, thatwill be the same.

“These are the hard yardsthat you’ve got to put in earlyon and take the flak for.”

Because of nextweekend’s World Cupqualifiers Rodgers will haveto wait two weeks to try andkickstart Liverpool’s seasonwhen his side travel toSunderland, after which theyare at home to ManchesterUnited.—Reuters

Pistorius cries foul after 200mloss to Oliveira

LONDON, 3 Sept—Oscar Pistorius complainedvociferously about the length of his opponent’s blades afterhe was beaten into second by Brazil’s Alan Oliveira in themen’s 200 metres final at the London Paralympic Games onSunday. South African Pistorius streaked into an early leadand was almost 10 metres ahead as the athletes came into thehome straight, before the Brazilian launched an astonishingfightback.

Oliveira ate up the ground and surged past Pistorius inthe final few metres. The underdog finished with a time of21.45 seconds, seven hundredths of a second ahead ofPistorius, who won gold in the event four years ago inBeijing, with American Blake Leeper in third.

The result left Pistorius seething about his opponent’sprosthetic blades, which he claimed were too long.

“This is a really strong race of mine, and as I said in themixed zone, the size of some of the other guys’ legs areunbelievably long,” Pistorius told Britain’s Channel 4.

“Not taking anything away from Alan, he’s a greatathlete, but the guys who do the measuring in the courtrooms, some of these guys are a lot taller and you can’t compete forstride length.”

“We’re not racing a fair race. The International ParalympicCommittee (IPC) have the regulations, but the regulationsallow the athletes to make themselves unbelievably high.We tried to address the issue in the weeks leading up to this, but it fell on deaf ears.”—Reuters
