UNDER THE VIADUCT is an art &

lifestyle series where folks can meet,

bike, skate or dine in an open-air

plaza. Situated in West Harlem on

12 th Avenue and near the Hudson

River, residents and fellow New

Yorkers can enjoy passive recreation

in the daytime and when the sun

starts going down, engage in dance,

digital and reflective art.

The 12th Avenue Viaduct also known

as the Riverside Drive Viaduct was

built in 1900 by the City of New

York. The viaduct was constructed to

connect an important system of

drives in Northern Manhattan -- a

high-level boulevard extension of

Riverside Drive over the barrier of

Manhattanville Valley to the former

Boulevard Lafayette, which today, is

north of 158th Street.

Weekend Walks is a pedestrian-friendly

program run by various business groups

and civic organizations around the city

under the jurisdiction of the Department of

Transportation (DOT). Under the program,

cars are banned from commercial

thoroughfares for a night or an afternoon so

that people can stroll at their leisure in the

middle of the street. These aren’t vendor-packed street fairs,

massive festivals or the bike-filled Summer

Streets; instead, they’re casual community

celebrations where local businesses,

organizations and residents come together

to dance, make art, eat, party and play in

closed-to-traffic streets.Activities vary by location, but Weekend

Walks usually include live music, arts and

crafts, classes and workshops, and kids’

programming hosted by cultural institutions

and businesses along the route. These

events are low-key and neighborhood

specific.

member of the Waterfront Alliance.

The Waterfront Alliance believes the

harbor and waterways of New York

and New Jersey should reflect the

vitality and diversity of great

metropolis that surround them. They

envision a harbor and waterways alive

with commerce and recreation: where

sailboats, kayaks, and pleasure craft

share the waterways with commuter

ferries, parks and neighborhoods.
