Programs in art and science embrace a belief in free and rigorous intellectual inquiry, and that inquiry comes alive inside our classrooms. Our students learn not what to think, but how to think. You won’t only learn the subject matter pertaining to your major or minor — you’ll learn how to apply it in real-world scenarios, through hands-on education and integrated programs.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) – WEBSTER GROVES

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed to help non-native speakers develop their English skills in an academic setting. Because we offer content-based ESL instruction, students undertake ESL classwork alongside American students. This way, ESL students learn how to interact with professors and other students in an academic setting, while becoming accustomed to the linguistic rigors of undergraduate university work.

All of our ESL instructors have a master’s degree in TESL/TEFL and many work as teacher trainers, with years of experience teaching English both in the U.S. and abroad.

ESL students have access to the latest technology for enhancing language learning, including electronic classrooms, online discussion tools, and video and audio equipment.

Undergraduate ESL ProgramThe ESL program is fully integrated, with its credits counting towards academic programs. Taking the ESL program comes at no extra cost, and is taken alongside your preferred course, meaning that there’s no need to prolong your study with additional hours. Undergraduate students wishing to take the ESL program must apply for an academic i20.

Our vibrant, 47-acre home campus is situated in Webster Groves, St. Louis, Missouri. It is within a charming and historic residential suburb, approximately 20 minutes from downtown St. Louis.

Founded in 1915, Webster has something old, something new, and something everywhere in-between. The “new” includes residence halls, apartments and modern academic buildings like the Webster Library and East Academic Building (EAB). Our historic buildings include the cozy Pearson and Priest Houses, which English, international relations, and philosophy majors call home. The central (and equally historic) administration building, Webster Hall, dates back to the university’s founding.

Completing the picture are the University Center with its fitness center, gym, eateries and gathering spaces; the Sverdrup complex with its media center for business and communications students; and the Loretto-Hilton Theatre and the Community Music School – two buildings from different eras where events keep life on campus vibrant and relevant.

MULTICULTURAL CENTER & INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AFFAIRS

23

The main source of support for international students at Webster University is the Multicultural Center and International Student Affairs (MCISA). They support international and minority students through:

• Advocacy• Advice• Campus-wide activities with diversity and international themes• Clubs and organizations• Cultural and social programs• Learning communities• Peer mentoring• Student leadership opportunities

Through MCISA, new international students are assigned to an International Connection Leader (peer mentor) before arrival. They will guide the new student through coming to the United States for college, welcome them, and take them to orientation activities. This helps new students to prepare for arrival, get to know the campus, and meet new friends.

Every summer, applications open for the International Friendship Program. This encourages international students to meet American community members and connect with others beyond the Webster University campus.

Another major initiative is the International Festival, which is an annual spring tradition at the Webster campus. Each April, students share their culture through arts, crafts, performances, food, and more.

In addition to MCISA, international students are supported through the Office of First Year Experience Programs (FYE). This department helps to organize Learning Communities, which co-enrolls students in paired courses that are based on a topical interest or area of academic study. This helps international students to get to know the university and like-minded students during the first semester.

There are also the Leadership Awards, which include prizes such as the Global Citizen Award, and have been set up to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional leadership skills. Many international students have been honored for their outstanding contributions to campus.

International students are a key part of campus life at Webster, whether through leadership, student organizations, or within employment teams, and we encourage all of our international students to make themselves at home with us.
