In the last ten years we’ve built the £120m de Havilland Campus, cutting-edge buildings for film and media and health and human sciences, our landmark entertainment venue Forum Hertfordshire and a brand new Law Court building. The next ten years will see us upgrade existing facilities as well as invest in major academic buildings, new student residences and new student services facilities with all services located on one part of the College Lane campus. Importantly, it will be delivered in a sustainable way with the College Lane residences being the country’s first true zero carbon university project. The University is based on a lively, safe, modern campus in the town of Hatfield, renowned for its association with the aerospace industry. It is one of the safest places in England and Wales to study, ranking as safest in the Eastern Region and ninth safest in the country according to the Complete University Guide Crime Statistics table 2013. Whether you’re looking for a night out or something new to wear, or you fancy a bit of culture, you’ll find plenty to do in and around Hatfield and nearby St Albans to keep you busy in between lectures.

Right on your doorstep are pubs, clubs, cafés, takeaways, restaurants, galleries, music venues, museums, shopping centres, leisure centres, a stunning country house or two, and… well, you get the picture. In short, we’ve got it all, and in case you can’t find what you want, we know a huge capital city a few miles down the road that probably has.

London calling! Less than half an hour. That’s all it takes to find yourself in the middle of one of the world’s biggest, most vibrant cities. London. We could easily fill the rest of this prospectus with everything this thriving metropolis has to offer. So we’ll just say it’s got everything for every possible taste and budget and leave it at that.

Music to your ears If you love music, Hatfield’s a great location to access club nights and gigs. On campus, the Forum Hertfordshire has quickly become one of the UK’s top venues (see page 21), while just down the road is Knebworth, host to historic, gigantic concerts featuring the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sonisphere, Oasis, Robbie Williams, and even Led Zeppelin back in the day.

Nights out The SU runs club and gig nights at the Forum Hertfordshire. These are a great way to get to know new people – particularly important in those first few weeks – see opposite page for more.

Star-gazing hip-hop skater seeks same Sometimes you wish your friends shared your love of astronomy... and roller-skating... and Kanye West… The SU runs scores of clubs and societies for you to meet people who share your passion, whether it’s chess or chocolate, films or faith, motorsport or midwifery. And if there’s no society for your particular interest, why not start your own?

Give a little, gain a lot Student life doesn’t have to be all studying and partying. The SU has loads of volunteering opportunities as well as the SU fundraising initiative RaG! Not only will this give you that positive feeling that you’re contributing to society, but you’ll also be developing vital skills that will shine out from your CV.

Your voice The Students’ Union is your voice, representing all students at every level of the University. You have the chance to stand up for your fellow students and become a student rep or an elected Officer. You can also get involved in the media side of things, through writing, editing, photography or broadcasting.

Help when you need it The SU has a wealth of trained officers and staff who are capable of lending a friendly ear and offering some very sound advice. The Forum Hertfordshire

Undoubtedly the most popular place on campus is the Forum Hertfordshire. The University’s stunning £38m entertainment venue has an impressive reputation for great gigs, classic club nights and stylish socialising.

A forum for fun

Turn it up! Ellie Goulding, Florence and the Machine, Example, Tinchy Stryder, Ed Sheeran, will.i.am, Feeder and Professor Green are just some of the acts that have played at the Forum Hertfordshire, and no doubt there will be plenty for you to see during your time here. With a wide range of club nights and live gigs, there is something for everyone at the Forum Hertfordshire. The Main Room’s state-of-the-art sound system and large purpose-built stage creates a truly powerful atmosphere for all its events. As for mini-club ‘The Attic’ on the top floor, this is a more intimate space with a big atmosphere, playing host to some of the smaller live shows and club nights.

Dressed up or laid back The Balcony bar overlooking the Main Room is perfect for kicking back and people watching, while the funky Style bar is open round the clock for light snacks and smile-inducing cocktails.

If you fancy something a bit more down to earth, the EleHouse pub is a bit of an all-round favourite, with hearty pub grub, a games lounge and a friendly atmosphere.

The Forum Hertfordshire boasts a spacious auditorium and several bars to suit every mood. There’s also a large, rather tasty restaurant, a cool café with Wi-Fi, and a very convenient shop. You’ll find a bunch of services close to the Forum Hertfordshire, such as a nursery, SU jobs shop and more.

Chaplaincy and religion We have a full-time chaplain who represents all the Christian denominations and leads a multi-faith team to help the whole student community. The chaplain is in regular contact with other faith groups in the area and can provide you with details of events and contacts. Studying by online distance learning is a flexible way to complete your degree. There is no need to come on campus for lectures, making it easier to fit studies around work and other commitments.

We also provide you with textbooks and ebooks when you need them. Assessment is through coursework, which will have fixed deadlines and may include scheduled online tests.

High academic quality standards All University of Hertfordshire online courses have the same high academic quality standard as our on-campus qualifications.

Just like on campus, all online courses receive employer input to ensure our qualifications give you the most relevant skills for your career.

International community Learn and work with an international community of students online. Distance learning allows you to gain access to expertise and networking opportunities with working professionals on a global scale.

Fees and Student Finance Fees for online study tend to be less than studying on campus. You pay as you study and may be eligible for a tuition fee loan from Student Finance.

Study with UH Online Online Study through distance learning has been pioneered at the University of Hertfordshire for several years and provides an increasingly popular alternative to the traditional three-year degree taught on campus.

How it works Our online degrees are based on their on-campus equivalents; they follow a similar approach and, wherever possible, cover the same topics. They are designed and delivered by the same lecturers and tutors, and supported by educational technologists and other specialists.

The online degrees are taught and assessed in a way specifically designed for the online medium and for those who need to study flexibly. You can study at a rate to suit you. There is a great big world out there and we will help you explore it. Spend part of your course studying or working abroad and you will not only have an amazing time, you will also pick up valuable skills and experience which today’s businesses really value.

Where can I go? All sorts of places. We have partnerships with universities in the USA, Canada, Latin America, South Africa, China, Korea and Japan, south-east Asia, and Australia. In addition, under the Erasmus+ programme, you’ll have the chance to live and study in quite a few European countries. On some of our courses you can even combine study at a partner university with an overseas work placement, or perhaps just choose to take a work placement.

Do I need to speak the language? Not necessarily. You can study in English at many of our partner universities in non-English-speaking countries, learning the local language alongside as a bonus. Being surrounded by native speakers will help you improve quickly and get even more out of your international experience.

Most of our students have the opportunity to spend time studying at one of our many partner universities overseas. It is an adventure you’ll never forget, boosting your confidence, increasing your independence, introducing you to new people and giving you a fresh perspective on the world.

What will it cost? Whatever year you study abroad, you pay no tuition fees to the partner university, and if you take a Third Year placement, you’ll pay no tuition fees to us either. Whether you’re joining us straight from school, or planning to study part-time while working or raising a family, our flexible choices mean we have the right course for you. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer...


Honours (Hons) degree You’ll study for three years full-time or five years part-time, and depending on your course and final grade, you’re likely to graduate with one of the following:

• BA Honours (Bachelor of Arts) • BSc Honours (Bachelor of Science) • BEd Honours (Bachelor of Education) • BEng Honours (Bachelor of Engineering) • LLB Honours (Bachelor of Laws)

Our degree courses are made up of modules (some compulsory, others optional), and you’ll normally need to complete twenty-four for an Honours degree.

Joint Honours degree Can’t choose between subjects? Study two! We have a large range of subjects you can mix and match. In your First Year you’ll split your study equally between the two. In your Second and Final Years, you can continue to study equally or make one a major subject and one a minor. For details visit go.herts.ac.uk/jh

Foundation degrees/HNDs Don’t worry if you haven’t got the qualifications you need for an Honours degree, you can still take a Foundation degree; or Higher National Diploma (HND). Extended degrees If you don’t have the right qualifications, you can take a preliminary year at a nearby college, progressing to the full Honours degree the following year. To find out more please visit go.herts.ac.uk/extendeddegrees

Work placement degrees/Sandwich This is a brilliant opportunity to get some real experience in the workplace. Some of our courses last four years, so you can spend your Third Year developing skills working for a company in the UK or overseas. Sometimes this even leads to a graduate job.

Your timetable If you’re studying full-time, you can expect between ten and twenty hours a week of lessons, seminars, tutorials and practical sessions. But before you think ‘great, plenty of time to put my feet up’, you’ll also need to spend time studying away from the lecture theatre, either at home or at one of our Learning Resources Centres (LRCs).

You can also study part-time if you need your studies to fit around work or family life. A part-time degree usually takes five years, and you’ll probably have to attend at least one lecture a week. Contact our Student Centre on +44 (0)1707 284800 to find out more.

Credit Accumulation and Transfer programme (CATS) A really flexible way to study. Essentially, you create your own study programme, choosing modules from different subject areas which you’ll then study at your own pace. This is perfect if you’re returning to study after some time away, as you can even gain credits for any prior certificated or experiential learning, reducing the time you need to achieve your award.

Making the grade The way we assess your work varies depending on your course, but there’s usually a mixture of exams, coursework and a Final Year project or dissertation (an in-depth piece of work).

Being a student is an investment of time and money. Accommodation, textbooks, going out and food all need a bit of budgeting. Fortunately, there’s lots of financial support available.


Investing in your future At the University of Hertfordshire we want to make higher education as accessible as possible to as many people as possible, while ensuring we can continue to invest in world-class facilities and academics. Our fee for UK/EU students, studying a full-time undergraduate degree is £9,000 per year, and £5,500 per year for a foundation degree in one of our partner colleges. For details on individual course fees see course pages 8-15 in this guide.

Do I have to pay my fees up front? You will not need to pay any course fees up front, a loan from the Student Loans Company (which you will need to apply for) will cover your fees for your course. This loan is added to any other loans you take to cover living costs. This means that no matter what your financial situation is, course fees will not be a barrier to studying for a degree with us. What about part-time study? If you’re studying part-time you will pay fees per fifteen-credit module that you study, rather than by year. For part-time course fees, please visit the relevant course page on our website. See go.herts.ac.uk/courses

NHS courses NHS courses are still government funded, so you won’t need to pay any fees. NHS bursary students can apply for a reduced student loan. Up-to-date information is available on go.herts.ac.uk/fees. UK applicants for NHS courses may also be entitled to a means tested NHS bursary; visit www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk

Equivalent level qualifications (ELQs) If you’re interested in studying for a qualification that is equal to, or lower than, a qualification you already hold you will be charged the standard fee for your course. You may not be eligible for a Tuition Fee Loan, Maintenance Loan or grant. This does not apply to Foundation degrees, PGCEs and health-related subjects. Supporting students with disabilities If you have a disability, you may need some extra financial support throughout your studies. If you’re a UK student, you could be entitled to a Disabled Students Allowance – visit go.herts.ac.uk/disability and www.skill.org.uk

Repaying your loans Course fee loans and loans to cover living costs are combined into one loan for repayment after you graduate from university. The facts about repaying your loan and the interest rates applied to your loan are detailed below.

• Loans taken out to cover your course fees and living costs only start to be repaid in the April after you graduate if you are earning more than £21,000 a year.

• If your salary falls below £21,000 your repayments stop – for example if you take a career break or are unemployed. Repayments only start again when you earn over £21,000.

• You only repay 9% of what you earn over £21,000. So for example, if your salary was £25,000, you would be earning £4,000 over £21,000 and therefore repay 9% of the £4,000 per year – which is £30 per month.

• Loan repayments will be deducted from your salary, normally through the tax system.

• If you have not repaid your loan after thirty years it is written off.

Interest • Interest on your loan will be applied at inflation

(RPI – Retail Price Index) plus 3% while you are studying, and up until the April after you leave university or college.

• From the April after you leave university or college, if you are earning below £21,000, interest will be applied at the rate of inflation.

• For graduates earning between £21,000 and £41,000, interest will be applied between RPI and RPI + 3% on a gradual scale depending on income.

• For graduates earning above £41,000, interest will be applied at RPI + 3%.

LoansCourse-fee loans These pay the tuition fees for your chosen course. You don’t need to pay up front, and these loans are paid directly to the University.

Living-cost loans These are designed to cover your living expenses. They are paid straight into your bank account in three termly instalments. You can get up to £5,555 if you’re living away from home, or up to £4,418 if you’re living at home. The College Lane Campus Most of the University’s schools of study are based at College Lane, and you’ll soon get to know it really well. It’s a big, self-contained campus, with lots of modern buildings and some seriously impressive facilities. Right in the middle of it all sits our Art and Design Gallery – the best in the region if we say so ourselves. It’s surrounded by specialist teaching facilities, Learning Resources Centres, student accommodation, a medical centre and pharmacy and our amazing new Students’ Union complex, Forum Hertfordshire. Probably the most exciting place to be on campus (outside study hours, of course), it contains a restaurant, coffee shop, three bars and a club. Read more on page 21.

The de Havilland Campus Our £120m de Havilland campus is home to the Schools of Humanities, Education, Law and Business. This pioneering development combines new halls of residence, purpose-built academic buildings, a twenty-four hour Learning Resources Centre, great sports facilities and a 460-seat auditorium. When it’s time to take a break, the cinema and shopping centre are just a short walk away.

Our £10m Law building on the de Havilland campus offers facilities that are nothing short of spectacular – modern, flexible teaching spaces, a mediation centre, a practising Law Clinic and a full-scale mock courtroom. We guarantee you’ll be amazed.

UHArts Our UHArts team supports the cultural life of the University and the wider community through the provision of high-quality and affordable arts events and exhibitions. Sustainable transport solutions We are leading the way in offering innovative and sustainable transport solutions to our students.

The University is continually investing in its campuses to provide even better facilities to support your learning, teaching and social experiences.

We are very excited about our current improvement plans, which represent an investment of more than £165m. Our vision is to see greater interaction with students, staff and the local community at our heart.

Our first project – at the de Havilland Campus – is already complete. We have transformed a central Atrium area into a vibrant hub. Beautifully designed and with a welcoming atmosphere, it is the perfect spot for breaks between lectures, joint studying and catching up with fellow students.

Our next projects focus on the College Lane Campus. Plans include Hutton Hub – a central space for student services – attractive new student accommodation and a modern Science Building.

Hutton Hub Opening towards the end of Summer 2014, Hutton Hub will offer a single centre where students will be able to access all of the services that are essential to University life. From the Campus Pharmacy to the Counselling Centre, the Students’ Union to the Student Centre, everything will be in one place, conveniently located right next to the social facilities within the Forum Hertfordshire.

Student accommodation The first phase of the new student accommodation will be opening in September 2014. Two additional phases will be constructed between September 2014 and September 2016.

Science Building The new Science Building, due to open in 2015, will bring all of the science teaching areas into a purpose-built state-of-the-art facility. The eyecatching light and airy glass building will provide space for both generic and specialist laboratories, as well as open areas for group work, informal learning and socialising between lectures.

Disruption to students will be kept to a minimum. We are sure that the benefits from these new facilities will far outweigh any minor inconvenience that might be experienced while the building works are taking place!

Creating a sustainable future We are widely recognised as leading the way in sustainability within the Higher Education sector. Our environment and sustainability team has developed our Environment and Sustainability Policy, and achieved the ISO 14001 accreditation, helping to make our University a more sustainable place to live and study.

The environment and sustainability team works on a wide range of areas including:

• energy and water efficiency • minimising and recycling waste • sustainable travel options • sustainable purchasing and fairtrade • community involvement and biodiversity • carbon management

The environment and sustainability team employs student EcoReps to help spread our sustainability message among the student body. Staff also get involved through our environmental representative group, helping to make a difference in their working area. Many First Year students choose University accommodation – it’s conveniently located and a great way to mingle and meet people. But there are other options available and, whichever you choose, we’ll support you all the way.

All about University residences University residences are spread over both campuses. You don’t have to live on the campus where you’re studying, so the choice is all yours.

While places in halls are obviously limited, we’re very good at finding rooms for applicants, especially First Year students. To give yourself the best chance of securing a place, apply before the A level results are out and accept your course offer before 31 August.

College Lane Campus This campus has modern, comfortable and well-equipped halls with single study bedrooms, fully fitted kitchens with food lockers, and shared bathrooms. There are also plenty of houses and self-contained flats for six to eight students, plus a number of twin rooms. All rooms have University Wi-Fi.

An exciting new building project is already transforming the living space and the campus, with new student accommodation available from September 2014.

The University’s vision is to create a fully inclusive living and learning environment which will significantly enhance your life while at University.

The new accommodation will provide:

• 2,500 new bedrooms • 500 refurbished bedrooms in Telford Court • two new sports pitches • campus gym • common rooms with informal learning and social spaces • a central hub with security and student services

There will be a variety of living arrangements to suit a range of budgets and needs.

The accommodation is generally arranged as either flats or town houses, with a small number of single occupancy studio rooms with their own kitchen and bathroom. The rooms are predominantly en-suite.

The first phase of the new student accommodation will be opening in September 2014 and two additional phases will be constructed between September 2014 and September 2016.

Not only will the new facilities provide a fantastic environment for our students, they will also lead the way in sustainability, achieving a true carbon-zero accreditation.

de Havilland Campus This campus offers self-contained flats for around eleven students. The single bedrooms are all en-suite, with fridges and Wi-Fi. Shared kitchens are all fitted out with the latest appliances. See go.herts.ac.uk/accommodation for more details.

Disabled students We’ll be sure to provide you with a suitable room if you use a wheelchair or have other particular needs. You may be able to stay there after your First Year too, possibly for the entire time you’re studying with us.

EU and international students Joining us from overseas? You’re welcome to apply for a room in halls of residence for your First Year. If you’re from the EU, you’ll need to accept your course place by 31 August, while international students have until 6 September.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or a serious competitor, getting active and playing sport is a great way of keeping fit and making new friends. Our £15m Sports Village on the de Havilland Campus has some of the finest university-based sports and fitness facilities in the country, and as part of the ongoing campus developments we will have a second gym, floodlit 3G pitch, and tennis and netball courts (opening in Autumn 2014) on the College Lane Campus.

Also located in the sports village is the University of Hertfordshire’s Athletic Union which is responsible for the management and development of the twenty-nine student sports clubs - most of which compete in the inter-University BUCS leagues. Social sport activities are organised on both campuses and include some structured, social but still competitive programmes, some ‘pay as you play’ activities and a whole range of regular, very informal sessions run as part of our ‘Active Students’ programme where you’ll find more than forty activities a week available to all. How to get here by...

Bus The quickest, cheapest and most convenient way to get around is with Uno, our very own bus service. Uno shuttle buses link both campuses. Along with the region’s public buses, Uno also runs to Hatfield station and town centre, across the region and into North London.

Rail Hatfield station (two kilometres from the campuses) is served by First Capital Connect trains from London King’s Cross (usual journey time twenty-two minutes) and Moorgate (usual journey time forty minutes), as well as local services from Cambridge and Peterborough.

Direct local trains run between Hatfield and Stevenage (journey time fifteen minutes), connecting with Intercity services to the North.

There is a taxi rank and bus stop at the station for connections to the campuses; a shuttle bus service operates regularly throughout the day between the College Lane and de Havilland Campuses.

Road The University is close to junction 3 of the A1(M). The postcode for College Lane is AL10 9AB and for de Havilland AL10 9EU. Air The University is located in the south-east of the UK, near to London. There are a number of airports within travelling distance of the University which handle international flights. Dates to remember The deadline for applying always comes round quickly. To start your course in 2015, you should get your application in between 1 September 2014 and 15 January 2015. This will ensure you have time to visit your chosen universities and apply for student finance and accommodation.
