ADVANTAGE

Page 5: Undergraduate Viewbook

It’s hard to know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been. For more than 80 years, Rivier’s founders, the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, have played a leading role in making the University a place where Judeo-Christian and Catholic values inform what we teach in our classrooms and what we talk about as a community. Our strong heritage prepares students for global citizenship in the 21st century.

While competition in its many forms is healthy, at Rivier we like to stress the lessons of collaboration. Whether competing on one of our many Division III athletic teams, running for a seat on our student government or preparing for the Harvard conference as a member of our Model United Nations team, we believe that dynamic human interaction, teamwork and acceptance of a wide diversity of beliefs is the best way to achieve a unified goal of serving the world.

The best way to gain a worldview is to study and live in a place with a view of the world. Rivier is not only located in Nashua, New Hampshire, twice named by Money magazine as “The Best Place to Live in America,” but we are less than an hour from the city of Boston. From Rembrandt to the Red Sox, Boston is a city rich in multicultural resources and full of endless excitement.

Rivier University prides itself on fostering creative thought and a sense of social responsibility, which inspires its graduates to become world leaders in any business, service or social sector they choose. The University provides a solid foundation in liberal education and hands-on global experiences.

Our mission, faculty, curriculum, facilities and location all combine to instill a deep understanding of our own and other cultures, the world and our place in it, and to help our students make the critical decisions that will shape our future. To experience the best of what we have to offer is to synthesize the wisdom gathered from multiple academic, philosophical, religious and cultural disciplines, and formulate a worldview with the ability to navigate complexity and change.

Access the WORLD

Internationalization and DiversityThe very goal of internationalization is to expand intercultural insights. When working on a project, we encourage students to incorporate global perspectives. While this often highlights how limited our own experience may be, it quickly proves how those open to a diverse environment are able to more quickly and successfully identify solutions to the issues they face.

The 21st century world is characterized by globalization. The world is no longer primarily defined by national boundaries, but by the global integration of resources, ideas and communities; and key to preparing for the future is experiential learning. Students are given opportunities to learn through internships, study abroad, field research, clinical participation, and more. Experiential learning not only gives students a chance to start building a resumé and portfolio, but also fosters cultural sensitivity and appreciation of global diversity. To meet the opportunities and challenges posed by an increasingly interdependent world, the Career Development Center is committed to helping students to become leaders in a global society.

• Senior-year internships help build resumés and portfolios.

• Classroom experience for education majors begins in the freshmen year.

• Hands-on, field-based experiences allow students to evaluate career options.

• Clinical experiences at a wide variety of healthcare clinics provide professional experience bridging to career opportunities.

• Opportunities to conduct faculty/student research and present at regional conferences to apply theory to practice.

• The Global Scholars Honors Program offers participants ongoing leadership and professional opportunities and engagement with global leaders on contemporary issues.

Rivier University is committed to a future that encompasses Catholic intellectual tradition, social responsibility and a community where faith and values matter. At the forefront of our ability to deliver on this promise is one of the University’s greatest strengths: its Roman Catholic heritage. Committed to the faith heritage, intellectual tradition, and social teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, the University educates the whole person in the context of an academic community that cultivates critical thought, sound judgment, and respect for all people. This community supports the intellectual growth of all its members while offering them opportunities for social, cultural, moral and spiritual development. We believe that just such an environment is perfect for ‘transforming hearts and minds to serve the world.’

HistoryFounded in 1933 by the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, Rivier University is a Catholic institution of higher education dedicated to ‘transforming hearts and minds to serve the world.’ Named in honor of Blessed Anne Marie Rivier, Founder of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, Rivier is a fully accredited institution enrolling approximately 2,300 students in two schools: the School of Undergraduate Studies and the School of Graduate Studies. As the oldest institution of higher learning in Nashua, Rivier is proud of its strong academic programs, student leadership opportunities, and commitment to service. Rivier is also one of the most affordable private institutions in the region.

Global EngagementThe Office of Global Engagement has launched a program that diversifies the student population internationally and expands campus-wide global experiences, awareness and understanding. Build a study abroad experience into your major, connect to cultural communities in New Hampshire, and interact with global scholars visiting campus. Rivier has developed partnerships with international universities and has created opportunities for students to travel and learn on a global level with real-world, life- changing experiences in Costa Rica, Greece, Haiti, Senegal, Turkey, and the US Virgin Islands, among others. Study abroad and international study opportunities will transform you culturally, intellectually and spiritually.

Global Scholars Honors ProgramRivier’s Global Scholars Honors Program connects exceptional students with leadership and learning opportunities that prepare them to engage, explore, and address the challenges facing local, regional, national, and international communities. Through an integrated program of courses, immersion experiences, and living and learning communities, global scholars answer three essential questions: What is dignity?; What is community?; and Who is my neighbor and why should I care? Students who show examples of academic achievement, leadership, community service, and growth are selected for invitation into the program.

Participating in either organized or recreational athletics encompasses the health benefits of regular fitness, and the life lessons of discipline, teamwork, working toward a goal, and sportsmanship. At Riv, we believe athletics both benefit students’ goals of redefining their own success and performance, and contribute to the development of a more complete worldview.
