As you read, ask yourself, “ Did the author want me to have information, have a certain opinion, or enjoy the selection?”

If the answer is to have information, the author’s purpose is to inform

If the answer is to have a certain opinion, the author’s purpose is to persuade

If the answer is to enjoy the selection, the author’s purpose is to entertain.

It takes energy to move your muscles. But did you know it also takes a lot of calories to power your brain? The brain’s billions cells are busy all the time. Run loe on fuel and they are the first to suffer. You feel tired and sluggish, and you have trouble concentrating.

First thing in the morning, your brain is truly starving. That’s why it is so important to eat right away. Kids who jump-start their brains with breakfast do better at math and language exercises. Breakfast eaters also seem to have sharper memories and handle new information better.
