ExploringThe

Mass

Page 4: Understanding the new Roman Missal

The Mass used to be done in Latin. This changed after Vatican II (1962-1965), which concluded that the mass could be translated into vernacular languages to help people participate more fully and actively in the Mass.

Now I Get it!

These attempts were

coordinated by an

known as ICEL

(The International Commission

on English in the Liturgy)

COMME LE

on a 1969 document entitled

“COMME LE PREVOIT”

(On The Translation Of

It laid out a path to

ICEL continued to

work on revising

translations for the

next

three decades

The English liturgy

was taking it’s form.

Page 10: Understanding the new Roman Missal

In the late 1990s ICEL was almost

done with a new translation, but

it is never released.

The CDWDS

(Congregation for Divine Worship

and the Discipline of the

Sacraments)

revealed there will a

NEW guide to govern

how texts and actions

of the Mass were

to be translated

Page 11: Understanding the new Roman Missal

The CDWDS put out a new document governing how the liturgy should be translated in the future known as the: LiturgiamAuthenticam

Page 12: Understanding the new Roman Missal

Among the many changes it made Liturgiam Authenticaminstructed the people that a NEW way to translate the liturgy should be used.

Instead of using Dynamic Equivalence in the translation of the Mass, people should use Formal Equivalence

Page 13: Understanding the new Roman Missal

DynamicEquivalence

FormalEquivalence

Focuses less on the rendering of

particular words, but instead focuses on the

total act communication.

Thought for thought

Focuses more on maintaining the

accurate rendering of the

text itself.
