Fusion of artistic passion and ecology to solve social problems by Clementia Eugene

The SW&D program is etched on the philosophical principle of development. In this program, students are taught to practice social work from a development perspective which promotes human and social rights, strengths and empowerment perspectives, capacity enhancement, and investment strategies, amongst others. In an effort to mobilize the potentialities of clients/participants in the problem solving process, students are trained to be creative, innovative, protect the environment and promote a spirit of social entrepreneurship amongst their participant population as well as for themselves. In light of the above, Mrs. Claudia Ruiz-Vasquez was invited as a guest lecturer to share with final year social work students her innovative project which epitomizes the developmental principle of social work practice. Mrs. Ruiz-Vasquez’s project seeks to empower young people who are in conflict with the law, teen mothers and school dropouts by teaching them skills as well as making counselling services available. Mrs. Ruiz-Vasquez, who is a distinguished artist, will share her artistic passion with the youth combining it with the materials of the boa which is an environmental concern in Aruba. This guest lecture left students ignited with a burning desire to dare tap into their creative energies to become developmental social workers.

Social work and corporate social responsibility by Clementia Eugene

On 27th September 2012, final year SW&D students pursuing the course on Social Planning, Project Design and Implementation jointly taught by Shauna Porter and Clementia Eugene, participated in a lecture/discussion on corporate social responsibility. This lecture was delivered by Mr. Guss Slabbekoorn and Mr.Wan Heng Ho from MetaCorp. They shared their experiences on how MetaCorp manages its businesses to produce an overall positive impact on society. MetaCorp appears to be environmentally conscious, family centered and supports several social related projects in Aruba. MetaCorp is one of the few private sector organizations that has a social worker on staff to assist its employees to better cope with life psychosocial challenges that may negatively impact productivity in the work place. During this lecture, students acquired concrete information on the role of an occupational social worker and valuable tips in setting up a business that epitomizes the principles of good governance and corporate social responsibility.

Social work benefits from tourism by Clementia Eugene

Students and lecturers from the Department of SW&D benefitted from the tourism sector when Stephen Kinsella made his seventh vacation visit to Aruba. Stephen, who is a licensed Clinical Social Worker is employed as a Senior Care Manager at the St. Vincent Behavioural Health Services in Connecticut, USA. Stephen joined Sacha Geerman, Merl Gibbs, Wilbert Marchena, Rochelin de Cuba, Kimberley Wever, Gregory Richardson, Yolanda Richardson, Clementia Eugene and Dean Paula Kibbelaar at ‘Coffee for you’ for a Lecturer’s Encounter on Thursday 25th October 2012. The purpose of this encounter was to engage in intellectual thought and discussion as members of the academy. In preparation for the encounter, lecturers had to read the article entitled ‘The theory and practice of developmental social work’ by Midgley, (2010). The discussion resulted into an animated social debate on development in Aruba. Stephen made valuable contributions to the encounter which left lecturers inspired and reenergized to continue to work in the vineyard of the academy. On Friday 26th October 2012, it was the turn of the students, namely, David Leer, Vicario Ellis, Keyla Rojas, Lindsay Geerman, Indrah Zievinger, Tatiana Pena along with Shauna Porter and Clementia Eugene to benefit from the social work experiences of Stephen. Stephen engaged the students in lively and stimulating discussions ranging from topics related to ethics, values, practice, competencies to entrepreneurship. In the students’ own words: “I am happy I was invited to join this session. Steve was an inspiration for us as future social workers. His passion for social work inspired me to continue with this journey and it made me excited to start working in this field. The session was fantastic. As a male social worker, I felt inspired by Steve.” When Stephen was asked his reflection on his interaction with us, this is what he had to say: “Having had the wonderful opportunity to share time with your colleagues and students re-energized and re-inspired me to broaden my focus of the larger social issues. It also gave me a renewed sense of confidence, enthusiasm, and conviction in the project I'm working on. And you Clementia....you are a Social Worker's Social Worker. You are most definitely lightening in a bottle. It was like being on a Social Work retreat. To say you are an inspiration would be a gross understatement. I very much enjoyed our time together. You are both very wise and highly skilled. It was an honor to meet you and a blessing to now call you a colleague and friend. I have to say that in my heart of hearts I believe this is the beginning of something, not the conclusion.” Knowledge is a valuable commodity and SW&D lecturers and students sure know how to acquire it outside the classroom setting by now tapping into the tourism industry of Aruba. SW&D now patiently waits for the next encounter with a visiting social worker to grace the Aruban shores.

I t was only a couple of months ago that I made the final decision to stay on Aruba. Certainly, the decision was to study OGM at the University of Aruba (Faculty of Arts and Science).

I remember when three years ago a teacher of my past school, Colegio Arubano, told me to start 'OGM' after I finish school. At that time I liked the idea, but honestly, I had other plans after finishing high school. I wanted to study something completely different and I also wanted to take a whole other road to get to choice of study I had in mind. After a couple of years, which is practically a couple of months ago, I decided that I wanted to study 'OGM'. Now I am, since August 2012 on the road to my Bachelors degree of OGM. The study met my expectations, and is fostering me even more as a student. Only a couple of months have passed and I can already say that I like the study. There is not much more I can tell of my experience at the UA however, it is important for me to tell that the University of Aruba provides students to be involved in different things e.g. clubs and that it is important to gain also experience out of the other academic- possibilities. Clubs are not only meant to just gain experience but, it helps you as a person to grow and to develop skills, that could be even hidden inside of you or that you did not even notice you had. My advice to all the students is to always try to be involved in other things. Make the choice of study that truly interests you, remember that hard work always pays off and that life is always trying to take a chance to teach you a lesson.

W e, as OGM-students, and future leaders of the community should take the initiative to take the first step to make a change. In my opinion it does not matter how small or narrow the step is, as long as you take the step.

I attended to the Green Conference for the first time in October. The conference took place in three days. These three days, were days of full experience, energy, speeches and apprentice. Professionals from different parts of the world and also from Aruba attended to this event and also gave speeches to present their ideas to make Aruba 'Smart and Sustainable'. I must say, some speakers took the initiative to come up with creative projects, taking in consideration all that the nature provides us on Aruba.

The Green Conference awakened ambition for the future.

Attendees, professionals, distinguished guests, also students of the University of Aruba were present to be a part of a big change on Aru-ba. Aruba could be a change in the world if we all as a community contribute.

As a OGM-student, who surely wants to contribute to our society. I am grateful that I was provided the chance to attend to the Green Conference. I thank the University of Aruba for providing students the opportunity for being part of something different.

I share with you, some inspiring quotes that I heard during the conference Green Aruba that made an impact on me:

B eing a Member of Circle K of the University of Aruba gives you great opportunities. One of the three tenets of

CKI is Leadership that is why CKI provides all its members the opportunities to develop their leadership potentials on different levels. One of the many possibilities is the Leader-ship Academy, 2012 is the first time CKI had a member pre-sent at this conference in Indianapolis, USA. CKI is confi-dent to continue to provide members this opportunity in the future to strengthen its members as leaders in our communi-ties. Carl Quant the current Vice-President and Educational & Membership Development Chair had the opportunity to be the first to experience Leadership Academy.

On July 29 I started my journey to Leader-

ship Academy 2012. Being the first member

from Aruba to attend the event made me a

bit nervous not knowing what to expect and

what was expected of me. Going in with an

open mind really made this experience one that I will not forget.

Leadership Academy is an investment in the

members of Circle K International. The six-

day event was intense and focused on the E6

Framework created by Brendon Burchard, author of the Stu-dent Leadership Guide. Facilitators walked students through

the steps to envision, enlist, embody, empower, evaluate and

encourage. Students learned that true leadership is based on

servant leadership, which requires leaders to put the needs of

others first, and to realize that no matter whether or not you

have a title, there is always a need for service to one another and to the world.

My days at the Leadership Academy started off early at 7:00

am and ended around 11:00-11:30 pm. You’re probably

thinking right about now “that’s a 16 hour day!”.

Well, we started the morning off with breakfast and at about

9:00 am we would meet at the Common Area where we

would get the day started. We would receive short lectures, combined with exercises and activities. Some activities and

exercises needed to be completed in your “Neighborhood”

which is your group for the week. We would have dinner at

6:00 pm and after that we would have some free time before

we meet again in the common area or in our neighborhood.

After the long days we would stay up playing games or just getting to know one another. Having to tell

people about Aruba and where I’m from always

made for an interesting conversation. I remem-

ber before leaving to attend the Leadership

Academy my fellow CK members showed me

the now famous “Wobble”, I was like “nahh I’m not going to do that”. Well imagine you, that was the

first thing I learned, the first day at Leadership

Academy.

I met some amazing people at Leadership Acad-

emy, 56 to be exact, coming from all over the US, Canada and Colombia. During the Leadership Acad-

emy we had the opportunity to do several service pro-

jects which included, painting tables, planting trees, remov-

ing lime stones from the creek and so forth. I joined 5 other

members in removing lime stones from the creek. I had the

greatest time with all of them.

Leadership Academy has given me the necessary information

and skills to further develop my leadership style and given

me the courage and strength to become the leader I can be.

Having had this opportunity I would like to thank Circle K of the University of Aruba and the University for giving me the opportunity to represent Circle K at Leadership Acad-emy 2012.

Ora cu a graba y saca Ruby potret, mester percura pa tin varios copia di tur e grabacionnan, pa motibo cu awendia ta usa hopi aparato digital y e material aki ta masha vulnerabel. Pa evita cu ta perde tur cos den un solo biaha ta hopi importante pa documenta, esta warda nan, na diferente sitio y di diferente forma. Otro sugerencia cu Bòi Antoin tabatin ta pa haci e informacion of grabacionnan accesibel pa publico.

Titulo di e buki ta: “The Portuguese Immigrant in Curaçao – Immigration, Participation, and Integration in the 20th Century.” Esaki ta un proyecto di investigacion cu a cuminsa na 2004 y a publica e resultado na juni 2012.Na 2010 Orco Bank N.V. Bonaire a publica e buki “Surgiendo den Kralendijk Historico – Emerging in historic Kralendijk”. Esaki a keda realisa cu cooperacion di Bòi Antoin cu a skirbi e parti di historia y su Fundashon Históriko Kultural Boneriano a pone mayoria di e potretnan cu a a publica den e buki disponibelOra di practica Historia Oral tin tecnica y reglanan cu mester tene cuenta cune.

Caresse I sings

Sparen is heel rendabel.

W hat is Scouting?

Scouting is a worldwide organization that was founded in 1907 by Robert Baden-Powell in the United Kingdom. Scouting was

designed as a program of informal education with emphasis on the development of leadership abilities/skills and practical outdoor activities such as camp-ing, woodcraft, aqua tics, hiking (in nature settings) and sports. Scouting was and is to date trademarked by the Scout Uniform and Scout Neckerchief (Tie). Since then to date scouting has evolved to better fit the current perspectives pertaining to educating children and youngster to: Scouting as “Education for Life”.

W hat this means is that thru the scout method, the aim is to teach, empower and enable the children and young-

sters between the ages of 5 up t o 18 t o become useful and responsi-ble citizens for our country. This is achieved thru the scout program, in which children and youngsters are taught di erent skills on di erent development field such as, Physical, Character, Creative, Affective, Social and Spiritual development.

Further on, the weekly programs can focus on themes like: Team-building, Personal development, Seasonal themes like: Carnaval, Cultural Feasts, Mothers day, Fathers day, Religious Celebrations and National Feasts like National Flag Day (were scouts are more visible to the community in the marching parade).

Scouting Aruba

Scouting has been going on in Aruba for a number of years now. First with ties thru the Netherlands and Netherlands Antilles to the W orld O rganization of the Scout Movement to recently becoming an o ficial ssociated Member of the I nteramerican Region of the W orld Scout Bureau (Based in G eneva, Switzer land) thru the national organization Scouting Aruba.

Scouting Aruba was founded in the year 2000 as the national organization of Aruban Scouts and functions to date as the umbrella organiza tion which gives support and oversees the 13 groups on Aruba that resort under it.

As stated above there are 13 scout groups on Aruba. They are all located in a district. Some districts even have 2 groups located in them. There are 10 groups which accept boys and girls be tween the ages of 5 t o 18 ye ars old, 2 groups that only accept boys from 5 t o 18 ye ars old and1 group which is only for people with limitations.

B eing a Scout L eader To be(come) a scout leader, means to be an example for the child or youngster whom you are guiding/ mentoring. I t is something that will requi re some amount of commitment on your side, mainly to prepare yourself for the weekly scout meetings, the actual scout meeting with the scouts and attending occasional organization and group meetings.a Ultimately it is something which will help you develop a number of skills. I f I take myself as an example I can say that because of Scouting I am now a better leader, mediator and advisor at work. These are just a couple of skills which you develop. As summer approaches, most university students have a countdown for the last lecture to be over to officially welcome summer vaca-tion. This is a practice that we have gone through since kindergarten I would say, but what if we can enjoy summer and yet learn some-thing during that time. Well, some of us students do believe in con-tinuing to learn, even during summertime and absolutely do not regret it.

So what did we do? Allow me to introduce you to Utrecht Sum-mer School. Utrecht Summer School started in 1987, with one course: Dutch Culture and Society. Utrecht Summer School is the largest academic sum-

mer program in The Netherlands and belongs to the biggest sum-mer schools in Europe. In the last two and a half decades, the sum-mer school developed into a broad school with over 150 courses in virtually all disciplines offered by Utrecht University and HU Univer-sity of Applied Sciences. These institutions for higher education of-fer high quality, fully accredited summer courses on bachelor, mas-ter and PhD level. All courses are taught in English by the academic staff. In 2012 Utrecht Summer School attracted over 2500 students

from about 90 different countries.

I attended the course Leadership for Sustainable Innovation for two weeks. How was it? Well, a sum-mer I will never forget. The sum-mer school has a global environ-ment with students attending from all over the world. You have the perfect opportunity to interact and share opinions, this will broaden your perspective on issues affect-ing the world. I would say at the end of the summer school you will have broadened you friendship

network. I have met and I am still in contact with students from Pakistan, Indonesia, China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Germany, The Neth-erlands, Switzerland, Peru, Costa Rica, Colombia and Ecuador.

The courses are designed to stimulate your brain and this I could noticed in the course I followed. The inspiring teachers would stimulate you to come up with solutions regarding sustainability for the future. The course was innovatively designed with a combina-tion of traditional lectures, field trips, group projects, and even a special guest lecture via Skype to just sit outside in the shade and follow a lecture.

You will have all the opportunity to discover the city of Utrecht, one of the oldest cities of Netherlands with all its culture and history. Utrecht Summer School has an extensive social program for you to discover the city with great parties and in casual settings.

I would encourage every student to start going on the website www.utrechtsummerschool.nl, do some research on the topic. If you are interested in and start saving. If you have any questions you can absolutely contact me, I will be more than happy to help you. The total investment, including travel ticket, housing, course, food, transportation, social activities came to around AWG 5000.- and it was well worth it for the summer I will never forget. Dare to go the extra mile, invest in yourself, meet the world!

Actualmente mi ta den mi periodo di stage pa por logra adkeri mi ‘Bachelor de-gree in Accounting and Finance’ otro aña escolar.

A kedami 2 oportunidad pa bin cu ideanan nobo riba mesa. Mi persona a pensa riba e siguiente projectonan. Projecto1;Mayornan den desaroyo! Projecto 2; Logrando meta cu mente pos-itivoProjecto 3; Summerfun 2013 (Summer-courses)Na e ocacion aki, mi kier a enfoca mas riba Projecto 1.

tempo, placa, facilitators, lugar y organisacion. Pa informacion, mi per-sona a cuminsa tuma contacto cu diferente personan den ramo di enseñansa, parti so-cial y economico. Por medio di entrevistan-

an cu diferente personan den e ramo nan cumi a menciona anterior-

Name:  MSc.  Tracey  van  der  Biezen

Age:  23  years  old

Study:  Organization,  Governance  and  Management

Academic  Year:  1st  year

My   name   is   Tracey   van   der   Biezen   and   I   am   the   Youth   Minister   of   the

Environment  of  Aruba  for  the  period  2012-‐2013.  At  the  moment,  I  am  studying

at  the  University  of  Aruba.  It  has  been  only  a  couple  months  since  I  moved  back

from  Holland  to  Aruba  with  the  intention  to  continue  with  my  academic  journey.

I  lived  in  Holland  for  about  5  years  and  studied  at  the  University  of  Amsterdam,

which   is   where   I   obtained   both   my   Bachelor’s   and   Master’s   Degree.   I   have   a

Bachelor’s   Degree   in   Human   Geography   and   Urban   &   Regional   Planning   and   a

Master’s  Degree  in  International  Development  Studies.

As   of   27th   of   September   2012,   I   have   been   elected   as   the   new   Youth

Minister  of  the  Environment  of  Aruba  2012-‐2013.  As  the  new  Youth  Minister  of

the   Environment,   I   am   determined   to   contribute   to   our   environment   and

community  by  attempting  to  reverse  the  destruction  of  our  natural  habitat.  How?

First,   I   will   attempt   to   change   the   “I   don’t   care”   attitudes   and   mentalities   that

prevail  among  the  Aruban  society  when  it  comes  to  conserving  our  environment.

One  of  the  fundamental  tools  that  I  will  use  is  education.  I  believe  that  educating

the   society,   especially   the   young   children,   about   the   importance   of   conserving

and   developing   the   environment   is   one   of   the   most   important   steps   that   are

ought  to  be  taken,  IF  we  want  to  change  the  depreciative  attitude  and  mentality

that  dominates  the  Aruban  society  in  respect  to  our  natural  habitat.

Second,  I  will  grab  the  issue  of  environmental  destruction  in  Aruba  by  the  horns,

by   introducing   fruit   and   vegetable   gardens,   also   referred   to   as   “hofi”   in

Papiamento,   at   every   primary   school   in   Oranjestad.   The   children   will   get   the

chance  to  grow  and  harvest  fruits  and  vegetables  at  their  schools,  and  enjoy  the

health  and  social  benefits  that  these  processes  and  products  may  bring.

With  the  cooperation  of  my  team,   local  organizations  and  businesses  I   strive  to

achieve  all  of  the  abovementioned  goals.

By  working  together  we  can  achieve  more!

 Love,      Tracey  van  der  Biezen

… and then slowly descending towards the island, with its rugged nature, sunny beaches, and hotels…… no wonder that most people at home didn’t really believe I was going to work there….And yet that was what I had come to do.

The experience was worth my while. I met some very interesting people, among them the University of Aruba’s Rector, Dr. Glenn Thode and also the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS), Dr. Paula Kibbelaar. But most of all, I was involved with Organization, Governance and Manage-ment (OGM)’s teaching. Accordingly, I also met with some very enthusiastic Aruban colleagues. And, even better, in a course on client based thinking I was presented with some of the Aruban students’ translations of my own theoretical con-cepts on service delivery in the Aruban setting. To encourage students to connect general theorizing with the island’s spe-cific realities may very well be a strong point of this course.

Involving Aruba’s reality in its day to day teachings and scientific work, provides the ultimate justification to this University’s presence. OGM’s local teaching program is defi-nitely on its way in this respect, making use of my own Utrecht School of Governance’s scientific input. The teaching efforts meet with results. I for instance re-connected with some stu-dents I had seen a couple of years ago, and could observe how they had developed in the meantime. And again, they im-pressed me with their field work stories on policy making and implementation on Aruba. The complexities of implementa-tion was another theme on which I taught.

A long flight from Amsterdam…

The research program is definitely on its way, as well. It was very good, for instance, to meet up with Mieke de Droog, one of the PhD students of Utrecht’s professor Paul Verweel, for whom I have been acting as a PhD coach. The face to face contacts with her on Aruba proved a very welcome addition to the long distance communication we maintain, through e-mail contacts and through Mieke’s occa-sional visits to The Netherlands. But most of all, her interviewing results she presented on the daily needs and experiences of Aruba’s visually impaired, are very promising, indeed. I am looking forward to the book.

I also realized, however, how much effort it takes to main-tain a proper research quality, in a situation that cannot rely on a longstanding tradition of social research. And yet these local re-search efforts are of crucial importance. Doing research enables the Aruban teachers in this field to more effectively instruct their stu-dents; it also will enable them to academically keep up with the in-ternational scientific community. But most of all I think that local research will enable teachers and students, alike, to observe Aruba’s complex realities. And reflect on them in the ‘evidence based’ man-ner only scientific research can provide.

My Aruban week has been very rewarding, indeed. And yes, I definitely had the opportunity to ‘empirically sample’ some of the islands lovely beaches and restaurants and this, also, was a satisfying experience. I enjoyed the company of some very cordial people. Aruba does have very attractive ways of its own.

'Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty lies opportu-nity.'

From the perspective of a student of Organization, Governance and Management

W e, as OGM-students, and future leaders of the community should take the initiative to take the first step to make a change. In my opinion it does not matter how small or narrow the step is, as long as you take the step.

I attended to the Green Conference for the first time in October. The conference took place over three days. These three days, were days full of experience, energy, speeches and apprentice. Professionals from different parts of the world and also from Aruba attended this event and also gave speeches to present their ideas to make Aruba 'Smart and Sustainable'. I must say, some speakers took the initiative to come up with creative projects, taking in consideration all that nature provides us on Aruba.

The Green Conference awakened ambition for the future.

Attendees, professionals, distinguished guests, also students of the University of Aruba were present to be a part of a big change on Aruba. Aruba could make change in the world if we all as a community contribute.

As a OGM-student, who surely wants to contribute to our society. I am grateful that I was provided the chance to attend the Green Conference. I thank the University of Aruba for providing students the opportunity to be a part of something different.

I share with you, some inspiring quotes that I heard during the conference Green Aruba that made an impact on me:

‘If you want to go quick, go alone and if you want to go far, go together.’

- Hugo Meijenfeldt

‘Planet earth is our spaceship and we are all astronauts.’- Wubbo Ockels
