What has caused the famine?

There are three main reasons why the famine has occurred.

• Drought – there has been no decent rainfall for over 2 years.

• Conflict – there has not been a stable government in Somalia since 1991.

• Rising food prices – because of the scarcity of food and the unstable environment, some staple food items such as maize, have risen by 240%.

Meet Nayle from EthiopiaShe is 10 months old and is the youngest of 10 children.

On the 11th of July, 2011, Nayle began attending the community-based outpatient therapeutic feeding programme in Belina Arba Village, Ethiopia. When Nayle first attended the clinic she weighed only 4.8 kgs. She is among 41 children being treated for acute malnutrition at the centre.

The good news is that Nayle’s weight is improving thanks to the UNICEF supported weekly programme.
