Due to a number of existing and imposedconstraints, One London Wall is one of the mostcomplex city office buildings ever designed by Fosterand Partners. The development is adjacent to thewest wall of the Roman Fort, part of the London Wall and hence a scheduled ancient monument.
The Post Office tunnel runs through the site andconstruction had to take place over the existingPlaisterer’s Hall. It was a requirement for the heightof the building to remain under the St. Paul’s viewcone, giving rise to a stepped section across a planwhich is curved to follow the line of London Wall as it meets the corner with Aldersgate Street.
The building is supported by a combination of newand re-used foundations and as a result of the needto preserve aspects of the existing structures, thelowest passenger lift lobby is at first floor. Thetransition from ground to first floor is achieved viaescalators through a spectacular nine metre highentrance hall on London Wall.

One London Wall
The Bespoke Systemicon TUBE is manufactured in Stainless Steel or NyMet® coated aluminium and can also besupplied as a distinctive combination of both.Natural Hardwood handrails compliment eitherfinish and NyMet® coatings range from uniquemetallics to an endless choice of BS, RAL oreven specially formulated solid colours. Concealed Fixingsicon endorses positive detailing and with suchemphasis placed on precision it is complimen-tary for fixing screws and bolt heads to bediscretely concealed wherever possible. Endcaps, cover discs and rosettes feature in thedesign of all key components to provide a tidyand tamper proof solution, particularly appropriatefor public and educational building applications.
Superior FinishStainless steel icon is supplied with a radiallypolished brushed satin finish and the aluminiumversion, which already benefits from aninherently superior surface to that of mild steel, is further enhanced by the application of a unique NyMet® coating system. Naturalhardwood handrails are polished and lacquered.

Technical Performanceicon has been developed in accordance withthe design criteria specified in BS 6180:1999and side loading requirements for all building-use categories can be accommodated includingthe 3 kN/m horizontal UDL designated for areas susceptible to overcrowding. Internal and external specifications are available for theNyMet® finished aluminium system including the Stainless Steel range which is supplied in 304 and 316 grade variants. Curved rails can be considered and special adaptations ofthe system are often incorporated to suit theindividual needs or preferences of each project.

NyMet® CoatingThe aluminium version of icon is factory finished in a unique NyMet® nylon coating.NyMet® comprises a three coat system ofelectrostatically applied Polymer offering a 150micron finish which has twice the thickness and10 times the resistance to abrasion of a typicalpolyester powder coating. NyMet® possessflexible properties which prevent the coatingfrom chipping and flaking, weathering resistanceis excellent and the finish satisfies all relevantFire Officer requirements. NyMet® is resistant to solvents and therefore most forms of graffitiremain on the surface and can be easilyremoved without affecting the coating.
NyMet® RangeNyMet® is generally applied as a semi glossfinish and is available in an exclusive range of metallics together with black and white as the primary range of options. Standard BS orRAL colours are also offered and even specialsolid colours or metallics can be formulatedupon request.
Natural Hardwoodsicon offers a contemporary selection of factorypolished and lacquered Hardwood handrails.Other species can be considered upon requestand all Hardwoods used for icon handrails aresupplied from sustainably managed sources.
Stainless SteelThe Stainless Steel icon system is produced in 304 grade for internal use and 316 grade for external applications. A refined, brushedsatin finish is directionally applied to mostcomponents whereas tubes are radially polishedand certain castings are glass bead blasted.

Designed by Richard Rogers Partnership,the scheme addresses the desire of companies toattract and retain key employees with the logic that if people enjoy work, they produce better work,which in turn creates a better business.
The immaculately detailed buildings surround acentral lake and an impressive range of communalfacilities are provided including a health club,swimming pool, café and open-air performance area. Unlike most office developments the park isopen to the public and the gardens play regular host to a wide array of outdoor social events. Theaverage build period for the six completed officeswas achieved with remarkable speed and efficiency,taking only 36 weeks including category “A” finishes.
