Until next time!- The Editorial Team

The current SU administration has now been in post for nearly three months. They have had a monumental task of accommodating the needs of a greater number of ‘Fresher’s’ than expected.

I met with Silvia Rasca, our SU President, to discuss her experiences and challenges so far in the job, and what it is we can expect to see happening through the rest of this academic year.

I was struck during this interview at just how much work is going on that we just don’t hear about. Silvia and her Sabbatical Team are working so hard on behalf of us, the students here at CCCU.

One of the big roles Silvia has taken on this year is representing the students on the Change Board. This is a committee of individuals, chosen by the Vice Chancellor, tasked with prioritising the goals that the university wants to achieve. Silvia’s role on this

committee is to ensure that student’s needs and concerns are addressed when these priorities are established. Silvia and the Vice Chancellor are both determined that the university and the SU should work together to make sure that the student experience at CCCU is improved and enhanced for all demographics of students.

For a number of years now the SU has been in need of reform and change. Silvia has sought to enhance the SU’s ability to engage and represent the entire student body through these much needed reforms. She explained to me how the Board of Trustees is being asked to adopt a more transparent and critical role to ensure that the reputation of the SU is upheld. Staff profiles are under appraisal and a ‘Democratic review’ is now under way. All these changes will form part of the ‘Three Year Strategic Plan’ that is now being implemented, ensuring your voices are heard and dealt with.

Silvia’s attitude to the role of President is one to be admired. As she told me, she has one

year in this role and she won’t waste a single moment. I asked her what her goal was over the next academic year and her reply was to feel confident that she had done enough work for the students at CCCU to be proud of. I believe that this interview with Silvia has shown me we have a President that is determined to put the student at

the heart of all decisions made at this university. A President committed to resolving the concerns of all students. And a President, whose work and commitment is key to the enduring success of our Students’ Union.

Silvia Rasca is a President on a mission.

Students now have the opportunity to climb to the summit of the ‘Roof of Africa’ and take part in a life-changing experience in August 2012

This year, the Raise and Give (RAG) team are going to Kilimanjaro to raise money for an AMAZING kids charity; ‘Childreach International’! That’s right … a group of 43 various students are joining forces with 2 Sabbaticals

officers on a once in a lifetime trip to the roof of Africa by scaling the height of Mount Kilimanjaro. We’ve decided to take on this challenge to help support some amazing projects and help children in the developing world in unlocking their potential by improving access to healthcare, education, child rights and

protection (all basic human rights). Through the ‘Climb Kili for Kids!’ event (offered by Childreach International), all participants will dedicate their time, energy and most importantly, enthusiasm towards raising a minimum of £2,450 each. This may sound like a lot, but with 45 people going on this epic adventure, the absolute minimum amount we will have raised will be £110,250 altogether. Which, will be one of the highest totals the RAG society would have EVER raised. Plus, it’s a massive step in helping develop children from deprived backgrounds gain skills and independence. So if you are still looking for that ultimate adventure this summer, why not do the challenge yourself! This amazing opportunity allows you to travel over the summer and boost your CV, all whilst playing a crucial role in making a significant difference

to the lives of children in the developing world.

You don’t have to be an experienced mountaineer to climb Kilimanjaro! With only a short scramble in the final section, Kilimanjaro is one of the few great mountains in the world where it is possible to reach the summit without any climbing skills. Plus, experienced guides will lead you all the way and porters will be helping you with your bags. It only takes 10 days to

the top and back, believe it or not! And after completing your climb, you have three options to choose from: you can either choose to fly straight home, extend your trip by eight days to soak up some more sights and sounds of Africa before you catch your plane back, or extend your trip for as long as you want by booking your own flights to and from Nairobi!

There are still a few places left on the trip if you want to be a part of the challenge.

Wednesday, the 2nd November 2011, from 12 midday until 6pm, in the Blue Car Park at the Canterbury Campus (near Gate 1). There, you will have the chance to have your photo taken with the torch and nominate an inspirational young person that you believe deserves to be a “future flame”.

Plenty of other activities are also confirmed for the day, such as the chance to test yourself against an elite athlete on a bike, cycle the torch route, fairground stands and hopefully lots more – keep checking back for more information.

Christ Church Students’ Union and Canterbury Christ Church

University are proud to be working closely on this amazing event with Coca Cola, Kent Union, Canterbury College, K College, University for the Creative Arts, Universities at Medway Student Association, Canterbury City Council and will also be reaching out to the local schools. We are inviting all students and local residents to this event.

The campaign is backed by music artists Dizzee Rascal, The Wanted, Eliza Doolittle, and You Me At Six who are all calling on you to nominate the Future Flames they know.

Josh Franceschi from You Me At Six: “All around the country young people are using their love of music, dance, sport and the environment to make

a positive difference. Everyone should get involved. Get nominating the Future Flames you know.”

How can you nominate a Future Flame? Coca Cola is encouraging everyone to come down to campus on the 2nd November to nominate inspirational students who they believe should be celebrated with the once in a lifetime opportunity to carry the Olympic Flame.

Nominations are open until 20th December and the dedicated campaign, run in association with NUS, gives the UK’s students a special chance to be celebrated as Olympic Torchbearers next summer.

These places are in addition

Genre-defining, boundary-pushing electronic outfit Swedish House Mafia will complete a historic first next Summer when they headline a gargantuan 9 hour ‘One Night Stand’ show in front of 65,000 people at the Milton Keynes National Bowl on Saturday July 14th 2012. Highlights of this incredible event will be recorded by BBC Radio 1 for a future broadcast.

This announcement comes hot on the heels of confirmation that they will play another landmark ‘One Night Stand’ show at New York’s Madison Square Gardens on December 16th 2011. This will see Swedish House Mafia - Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso - make history when they become the first dance act to have headlined both venues.

Swedish House Mafia will join an enviable list of music legends who have headlined the National Bowl including Oasis, Green Day, Metallica, Eminem and Foo Fighters.

The list of artists who have played Madison Square Gardens reads like a veritable

who’s who of music dating from the late sixties to the present day.

The band are also set to release a live album (date to be confirmed) taken from the road this year. The album will feature their much sought-after, previously unavailable Coldplay Vs Swedish House Mafia ‘Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall’ plus ‘Antidote’, their new collaboration with Knife Party (Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen).

The Swedes have already enjoyed phenomenal success to date. Not only did their recent UK tour sell out in minutes which saw a second night added at London’s Alexandra Palace, but they sold over a million singles in 2010 alone, saw their album ‘Until One’ reach Gold status, co-headlined Radio One’s Big Weekend and played major festivals including Creamfields, T in the Park and Oxegen.

Internationally, their infamous Masquerade Motel events sold out in Miami, Las Vegas and Ibiza where they enjoyed a sixteen week residency.

Tickets for the National Bowl show (doors open at 2pm and closes at 11pm) are £45.00 and go on general sale from Friday 30th September at 9am.

They’ll be available from www.seetickets.com / 0844 811 0051, www.gigsandtours.com / 0844 811 0051, www.ticketmaster.co.uk / 0844 826 2826, www.ticketline.co.uk,www.ticketweb.co.uk and www.theticketfactory.com / www.stargreen.com/ www.datatransmission.co.uk

and our students have a broad range of programmes to choose from, including not just traditional Western Art Music, but also popular and commercial music, creative music technology, performing arts, drama, and dance education.

Performance is a key element of our work, as is musicology and also composition. All these strands will benefit from greatly enhanced provision from autumn 2012 with the refurbishment of St Gregory’s Centre for Music and the redevelopment of the current Students’ Union building as the Sir Peter Maxwell Davies Building - a bespoke suite of seminar teaching and practice rooms.

The level of investment in Music here far outstrips that currently envisaged for any other Music department in the UK higher education sector, which is just one reason why Christ Church is a great place to come and study!

The Music and Performing Arts Department recently hosted a two-week series of lunchtime concerts at the St Gregory’s Centre for Music in collaboration with the Canterbury Festival.

Covering a huge range of repertoire of all kinds, this flagship programme gives real substance to Christ Church’s aspirations to engage meaningfully with its regional cultural partners.

Among the other highlights of our involvement with the Canterbury Festival was a masterclass for student violinists given at Augustine Hall by rising star Alda Dizdari, who also gave a stunning recital here.

Music and Performing Arts has a presence across three of our campuses: Canterbury, Broadstairs and Folkestone

On Wednesday September 28th, the English Team from Primary Education hosted the first of a series of events to promote reading for pleasure.

The invited speaker was Morris Gleitzman, a world renowned and award winning children’s author, born in England but long since a resident of Australia.

The event was held in Augustine House, open to student teachers from both primary and secondary, teachers from our partnership schools, alumni and staff and students from other faculties within the university.

The evening was very well attended and the feedback received reflects the quality of Morris’ presentation. He included readings from his own books, answered a number of questions from the floor and

was happy to sign copies at the end of the evening.

The key message which came across was Morris’ belief that children should be encouraged to read for pleasure and that from this, their own writing can take shape as they begin to believe in themselves as young authors.

The English Team are now engaged with making plans for the next event, and would welcome any suggestions for future guest speakers. If you have an idea for this, please contact Virginia Bower at [email protected]

Virginia Bower As Partner and Principal Sponsor for the second year running, the University held several events across the festival programme, including a special Canterbury Christ Church Festival Concert on Friday 21 October at Augustine Hall with performances by Albanian violinist, Alda Dizdari.

The programme included, Bach Sonatas and Schubert’s F Minor Fantasie, to the original two-piano version of La Valse by Ravel, as well as pieces by the Richard Rozze Duo, The Angel Elwin Duo and Deux Reflets/Twice Reflected, plus many more.

Rosie Turner, Festival Director, said: “The award-winning cultural partnership between the University and the Festival infused this year’s programme. There were free lunchtime concerts everyday at St Gregory’s by students and staff, and lots of others werevolunteers helping out either in the office during the run-up to October or at Festival venues each evening.”

Canterbury Festival was an absolute success.

One of Canterbury’s main attractions is back and better than ever. If you love theatre, and experiencing art in any form, then the Marlowe theatre in Canterbury is where you need to be.

In 2009 Canterbury City Council agreed for the old Marlowe theatre to be torn down and refurbished. Additional land was purchased from the used car lot behind the theatre so that it could expand and live up to the name of great Elizabethan playwright it was named after – Christopher Marlowe.

For months the excitement

of the new theatre was almost unbearable but then on the 4th of October the Marlowe was reopened by Prince Edward, and what an opening it was!

After £25.6 million had been spent on renovating the building, it was looking in grand form with tall Grecian style pillars and glass front – the Marlowe takes its inspiration from both the traditional and the modern to produce an aesthetically impressive theatre that is in stark contrast to the red-brick houses around it.

The new building boasts a 1,200 seat auditorium but also includes a community performance space, an orchestra pit to accompany 80 musicians, a riverside restaurant and several new

bars.

Yes the theatre looks wonderful. Yet it is not the aesthetics that makes the theatre so appealing, it’s the shows and workshops that will be coming to the Marlowe that you must look out for.

Truly there is something for everyone. The talent appears both phenomenal and original. Particularly in such performances of ‘The Madness of King George the Third’ and ‘The Nutcracker’. Performed by the Northern Ballet to Tchaikovsky’s wonderful score, it will be a treat that must not be missed this Christmas.

But if theatre isn’t your thing there are plenty of other performances that will suit

The Students’ Union is a fantastic organisation that provides an environment for all students to enhance their skills and improve themselves whilst at university. At the heart of the SU is the Students’ Union Council. This is a board of individuals that have been elected by the students to represent them. In essence it is our version of the British Cabinet.

The recent October by-elections saw the latest instalment of elected Officers join the SU Council team. This has been a hugely successful year with 28 out of the 30

Officer positions being filled. This is a fantastic achievement for the SU and students alike.

Below is a list of the new SU Council that will represent you this year. The Council is an extremely accessible way for students to have their voices heard.

Whether you suggest ideas to Council Officers to voice on your behalf, or even turn up to Council meetings to take part in debates yourself, it is an amazing forum in which to debate policy ideas, address concerns and plan campaigns.

But Council only works if it has input and engagement from the student population. We need to

know what concerns students have, what issues you want addressed and what future it is you want to see fostered here at CCCU.

If you want to get involved or just talk to a member of the Council, we are all more than happy to listen and advise, support and guide any student with any concern.

within the program, and has the special “P” logo that is shown at various points during it, everything will be nice and legal.

Of course, when the idea was announced, there were those who were opposed to it because, somehow, it would damage trust and promote unhealthy lifestyles.

Even though there is still a ban on product placement of alcohol; cigarettes; food and drink that is high in fat, salt, or sugar; gambling; and weapons (along with baby milk and medicines, but that’s for a completely different reason). However, adverting 1950’s TV puppet shows spoofs is okay.

But let’s be honest, we’ve all been exposed to product placement for so long now that we’re hardly going to notice it unless, someone like a character out of The Truman Show turns to the camera and says “Watch Jiggly Castle, it

ain’t half bad. Honest”.

Think of all the films you’ve seen over your life: James Bond often drives an Aston Martin DB5; I, Robot, has its Converse All-Stars; and The Island has whatever out of the 30-something individual product names that Michael Bay insisted the film had to have.

Now think about TV this time last year and TV now. Notice

follow us on twitter:www.twitter.com/christchurchsu

decided to allow companies to pay to have their products featured in the show, starting from the end of February, to boast their income a tiny bit. So now, Nestlé could have a Nescafé coffee machine featured in This Morning and a box of Kit-Kats in Hollyoaks.

And I could somehow have the puppets from Jiggly Castle featured in Lewis. Well, as long as I can get it justified

Months ago, product placement rules were lifted, allowing some TV shows to show some products during their shows. The reasons for this were that, over the last few years, there has been a decline in advertising revenues.

Therefore, last year Ofcom

corner I see a line resembling that of a club opening. With a sinking feeling, I’m forced to take part in the great British national pastime known as queuing.

As I look along the line I see many students (and lecturers) in the same predicament as I have found myself, twitching slightly as time between classes gets less and less, but taking comfort in the prospect of the renewed energy our coffee, sandwich or Danish will undoubtedly provide.

With Touchdown serving by far the nicest food and drink on campus it seems that the Cafe has fallen victim to its own success. And it seems it has begun to be everyone’s favourite as more and more students decide to meet their colleagues and friends there.

As I watch its staff diligently

The two go together like bread and butter. A student’s affinity with caffeine has long since been the stereotype passed down by elder siblings

But sometimes, despite Touchdown’s best efforts, I feel compelled to jump over the counter and start serving myself. My main worry is that as the queue gets longer people will grow frustrated and go in search of their coffee kick elsewhere.

I noticed that the University has taken some measures to improve waiting times by advertising for more staff members. However, it seems that a slip of paper by the till isn’t quite doing the trick.

CANTERBURY – Students who regularly go out in Canterbury could not have missed the new metal detector in Club Chemistry.

It is a security measure that the night club and several parties, including the Kent Police, implemented after the stabbing of a 19 year old student of the University of Kent on the 20th of September. The Canterbury Community

Safety Partnership (CCSP) considers it as an aberration and believes that Canterbury is still safe for students.

safe for students.

The stabbing incident on the 20th September came quite unexpectedly, because Canterbury appeared in the spotlights this year as one of the safest cities in the UK regarding students and night life.

This month, the city was awarded with the prestigious ‘Purple Flag’, the highest grade

for a city’s night life quality in the UK.

Thereby, the Complete

University Guide announced earlier this year that Canterbury is the city with the least student related crimes in England and Wales.

“We are now in that elite group

of safe and viral places to visit within this country. So I think we can justifiably say that what happened was an aberration,” says the Licensing Manager of the Canterbury City Council and member of the CCSP, Jim Ratchford.

Still, the decision to use a metal detector in Club Chemistry, was necessary according to Sgt Dave Brenchley of the Kent Police and CCSP. “It is not just for the safety but it also helps people to feel safe. It gives people the confidence that the club will do everything it can to make sure that no one will get

injured.” There is no reason for students

to feel threatened because of the incident. Ratchford states: “Seriously, no. Canterbury is the safest and remains the safest.”

But to stay safe while going

out, the best advice is to watch your drinking, according to Ratchford: “Enjoy the social

side of life, but don’t get drunk.” “The likelihood of you being a

victim is bigger when you are intoxicated. Because you are not really aware of the signals that would make people a bit more careful about where they are, what they are doing, who they’re with and who they are walking towards,” adds Brenchley.

Freshers’ Week review and impressionsYildiz, former Freshers’ Crew member, breaks down the first week of the year

Freshers’ parties, fairs, quiz nights, pub crawls, Cuban, Chemistry, fancy dress, a new home, and new people! Freshers’ week at Christ Church was the perfect way in which hundreds of students said ‘HELLO’ to their new lifestyle!

With a lot of nerve racking initially, this year’s first year students seemed to adapt to the University environment at an immense speed. They got really involved with all the events, and their enthusiasm definitely paid off with lots of brilliant nights out!

The Barbie vs. Action Man pub crawl, which was followed by a messy night out in Chemistry, was by far one of the best nights out of the entire week, and I want to congratulate everyone for their fabulous costumes and the effort that went into making them!

Yildiz Albay

A special shout out to all the guys who wore pink wigs and tutus and also managed to stand on high heels all night!

And who can forget the Freshers’ Crew dance? By the end of the two weeks there was not a single person on campus who didn’t learn the dance or at least bob their head when One Direction would come on. People are still haunted by that

song.

Another definite success during Freshers’ Week was, of course, the Freshers’ Fair. With plenty of free pizza, sandwiches and sweets, and lots of sport clubs and societies to sign up to, students gained a real understanding of the social life available at Christ Church.

I want to remind all students that it’s never too late to join societies, so you can show your interest in any of the sports or other societies by contacting our Societies Officer, Dennison Packer at [email protected], or our Sports Officer, Matt Stone at [email protected]. Denn and Matt will answer any questions you have about joining, or even creating your own society or sport club! Remember, the recipe to your own society only consists of an interest/hobby, a president, a social secretary, and five other people!

Overall, one could say that most, if not all freshers

seemed to have enjoyed their first week at Christ Church. Charlotte Louise Epps (Year one - Adult Nursing), explained that Fresher’s Week definitely “lived up to the expectations”. Charlotte explained that she took the week as an opportunity to prepare herself for university, and absolutely enjoyed new experiences but especially “meeting lots of really nice people”.

She added that the “nights out were amazing”, and defined the

overall week as “outrageous”, “fun” and “exciting”, explaining that she would love to go back to “do it all again”. Well, don’t worry Charlotte, you have three years to live it up!!

With plenty of guidance from the Fresher’s Crew, I hope that all the freshers out there had the best week of their lives! And I am very much looking forward to seeing you all at the events that the Entertainment Crew has planned throughout the rest of the year!!

Members of the Freshers’ Crew were on and around campus almost 24/7 to help all students with their enquiries

Paris. A moveable feast. The home of the Lost Generation. The City of Lights that has inspired countless great writers

and artists is the setting for Woody Allen’s newest film, “Midnight in Paris” starring Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams.

Wilson is a writer who feels he’s sold himself short writing

film scripts for Hollywood, instead of fulfilling his desire to be a “real writer” and write a novel of substance like his idols, the writers of the 1920’s like Fitzgerald and Hemingway.

Whilst engaged to McAdams, he is staying in Paris while his fiancée’s father performs business “stuff” (at least that’s all I could gleam from the ambiguous term “merger”) and the couple’s relationship breaks down.

Except this film is almost nothing to do with the couple’s relationship; we’re made aware very early on that McAdams’ character is obviously a conceited, self-centred and awful person, hell-bent on cuckolding our writer protagonist with another conceited, self-centred and awful person.

The pompous professor that his fiancée is so infatuated with is wonderfully acted by Michael Sheen, best appreciated arguing with the French President’s wife Carla Bruni about who an artist actually married, and who was his bit on the side.

Now, learning very quickly that the romance introduced at the start is obviously doomed to fail, the film is then free to concentrate on what it cares about: Paris! Wilson somehow

“It is undoubtedly one of Woody Allen’s best films of the past ten years”

manages to wander back to the 1920’s, a time where the greatest writers and artists of the day, the “Lost Generation”, have gathered in Paris to live a Bohemian lifestyle and get drunk together.

He quickly assimilates himself into the great literary society, first casually meeting a lovely girl named Zelda and her husband Francis Scott, then being introduced to an incredibly funny Ernest Hemingway (I challenge any viewer to not laugh out loud at “Have you ever shot a charging lion?” apropos of nothinvg) and numerous other poets, artists and writers.

From that point on, he embraces the night-life of what he believes to be the Golden Age of literature. Upon meeting Adriana, the (this time fictional) mistress of Picasso, someone who longs for what she thinks is the literary Golden Age the Edwardian Paris of the 1890’s.

From his and Adriana’s short blossoming of romance, the true moral of the tale, and the main character’s real problem is revealed: by longing for a bygone time, you remain in a deluded state of desire for the past, not fully living in the present.

As ever in Woody Allen’s films, the plot only really

serves to prop up the general point of the entire story, and thus the film shouldn’t suffer demerit because of the wholly unbelievable relationship between Wilson and his fiancée, and the film should instead be applauded for its immensely humorous portrayals of numerous literary figures (like Dali’s “Rhionosaurus!”... Trust me, you’ll laugh) and overall pathos.

Owen Wilson’s performance portraying Woody Allen himself was also very amusing; I half expected the guy to break the fourth wall and start arguing with someone about Marshall McLuhan in a movie theatre line.

entering Mexico and that beautiful song played “Jose Gonzalez’s Far Away” I threw my controller across the room to not interrupt the love being made to my ears.

From start to finish I was engrossed, but where the game

truly shined was the ending. The whole game culminated in this final scene that left me staring at the credits in contemplation, and not like Assassin’s Creed where I’m just staring because I have no idea what just happened.

Redemption, it’s in the title. This game has one of the most poignant and accurate representations of redemption that I’ve experienced in any medium. Though RDR stands in comparison to Western films who address the same topic, the interactivity that it bestows makes the experience stronger than anywhere else.

John Marston seeks redemption. Not for his conscience, but because he is forced to do so to earn his family’s freedom. He spends

most of the plot seeking the former members of his gang and hunting them down at the behest of the FBI. By killing those who left him for dead, he not only gets revenge for what they did to him, but redemption for his actions as an outlaw.

The effort that John Marston exerts in his quest for redemption is not for his own benefit, or even for his wife Abigail’s; it is for his son, Jack. John and Abigail speak several times about their desire for Jack to live a life as far removed as possible from their own: The Marstons lived their earlier years as outlaws, robbing banks and killing people.

Many often question John about how he managed to justify his actions as a law-breaker and he responds that

he was kinda like Robin Hood stealing from the wealthy and undeserving and helping out those that needed it. This justification isn’t held up by the members of their gang or by the FBI, however.

It does seem as though John and Abigail honestly regret their criminal life, John states that he had to live the way [he did], and that he was in awe of Dutch just like everyone else was. Ultimately, however you look at it, John Marston was a man trying to live by pretending the things he’d done didn’t happen. It is difficult to imagine that John could really believe that he would be allowed to walk away unharmed and free.

‘The DamnCats’, a four piece band consisting of Savannah Sylken-Smith (Vocals and bassist), Martin Jackson (Vocals and guitarist), Michael Saeed (guitarist) and Tim Jackson (drummer) are taking Canterbury by storm.

They describe their sound as ‘moving, shaking and heart-breaking’. They are pushing the boundaries of the Brit-pop and Indie music scene with such singles as ‘Liberation’, ‘4am’ and ‘Choke’ that host buoyant riffs, powerful, eclectic vocals and toe-tapping beats, enough to get anyone up and dancing. After a string of successful shows in and around Canterbury, I catch up with them for their very first interview.

The atmosphere is one of excitement. In just minutes they are about to perform; they sit restlessly, eager to be up on stage and doing what they love

the most:

Me: So, thanks for sparing a few moments of your time guys; I’ll get straight to it. How long have you been a band for and how did it start?

Martin: We formed in May 2011. Well, Tim is my brother so we’ve been playing together for around seven or eight years and we were in a lot of different bands but it just never really worked out so we found these two guys (he gestures to band-mates Savannah and Michael) by putting an advert on ‘joinmyband.com’.

Savannah: We found out that we lived like fifteen minutes around the corner from each other but had no idea that we were looking for a band.

Martin: And like we just sat down and listened to some s**t and found our songs through that, when a particular song came on that fitted the music we wanted to play we said “that’s a DamnCats song” and it stuck.

Me: Okay cool, that must make it easier living so close to each other. How did you come up with name of the band? (Tim shows his tattoo which is of the band’s name).

Martin: It’s not from his tattoo! Whenever I was in an old band about seven years ago or something, I always wanted a production company and I love the film ‘Reservoir Dogs’ so when the band formed I thought about that title, and it’s a cool title so I thought the opposite of reservoir of is a dam and the opposite of dogs is cats and so we added the ‘n’ and put them together and it became the ‘DamnCats’.

Me: Who would you say are your key influences?

Michael: Well personally for me, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers…but for the band, possibly the libertines.

Savannah: Blur.

Tim: Avenge Sevenfold

Savannah: The drumming in particular for them though.

Tim: Yeah the drumming is awesome.

Martin: I’d have to say anything that’s 90’s brit-pop like Pulp, Ocean Colour Scene or the Stone Roses.

Me: I haven’t heard of any of those bands….I’m sorry. (Queue lots of exclamations from the band)

Yes, it’s that time of the year again for the shops to stock up with zombie facemasks, witches hats and more fake blood than you can shake a broomstick at! It’s Halloween! Er, woo! Now you’ve been living in a shed if you’ve never heard of Halloween before or even celebrated it, so that must mean everyone knows why it’s celebrated then? Yep? No, I didn’t either.

Back in the day, or about 2000 years ago the Celts celebrated their new year on the first of November on All Saints Day. This New Year marked the end of summer and the start of a cold, dark winter; these winter months were associated with death as many community members would be lost.

On the eve of All Saints Day (Eve of All Hallows – Hallowe’en – Hallows is just another word for Saints), it was believed that the ghosts of the deceased would return to Earth, just for a

day, as the Saints as celebrated on ‘All Saints day’ would scare them away again. (Yay, peace restored!) While on Earth these ghosts would supposedly terrorise people aiming to possess their body as a chance of living on earth again.

So, it’s making sense so far? 2000 years ago the Celts celebrate the new year on November 1st, new year means end of summer and the start of dark cold months, things are a lot scarier in the dark, the ghosts come back to try and find a body to possess to stay on earth again, this happens on October 31st. Pow! That’s Halloween. Farfetched, but we’ll stick with it.

Now for the fun part, why do we dress up and who started Trick-Or-Treating? Many people would dress in animal skins, ghoulish masks or even paint their faces to ‘blend in with the ghosts and spirits returning to earth’to not to be possessed by

them! It’s now starting to make sense why we cut holes in our white bed sheets and throw them over our heads, right?

Trick-Or-Treating has the same basic concept; families would leave bowls of food in front of their homes, to distract the ghosts that were wandering the Earth from entering, of course. Maybe you could relate this to those lovely neighbours everybody knows that give out handfuls of Haribo in fear that their house might get egged otherwise! Another idea about trick or treating is that in these

Halloween remains a nightmarish event that many would prefer to see axed from the annual calendar. Combined with Guy Fawkes, this autumn double-header brings about a time of social drinking, open bonfires and firework displays.

While most keep the revelry and celebration to an appropriate level, it remains a night where the opportunity of masked crime heightens throughout the country. From Freddy Kruger to Michael Myers, these alcohol fuelled villains use their secret identities

to turn a neighbourhood into living hell.

Eggings, smashed windows and graffiti are just three of the most common incidents that torment the public on a bitter October evening. And this year has been no different in its supply of petty crimes throughout Canterbury.

Ryan Whiting, a student from the city, said: “Once again there was the usual behaviour that Halloween is now associated with.

“The morning after there was broken wind-mirrors and smashed egg shells along the street and covering buildings.

“Canterbury is now a student city and wherever there are students there will always be this level of crime.

“Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against Halloween and trick or treaters do not cause

problems, but I see no need for supposedly mature people to wreck havoc on areas of the city – especially when elderly people live there.”

Last year Kent police stepped up a gear to prevent anti-social behaviour ruining both Halloween and Guy Fawkes. The crackdown led to the cancellation of 80 rest days for police officers in the area and schoolchildren were sent Bluetooth messages warning of the dangers of fireworks. Those under 18 were also reminded that possession of fireworks would result in an £80 fine.

The Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) also issued a notice urging people to make safety a priority during the celebrations.

Lawrence Pater, KFRS’s Community Safety Manager, said: “Fire can spread easily, so where and how you build your

bonfire is important.

“Build it well clear of buildings, garden sheds, fences, hedges and overhanging branches and don’t use petrol or paraffin to get the fire going – it may get out of control quickly.

“Always keep a bucket of water or a hosepipe nearby in case of emergency and make sure the fire is out before leaving.”

Halloween can be a time for fun and enjoyment. But sometimes it’s easy for people to forget that not all of our communities wish to join in and this may cause various problems.

Trick or Treat? Halloween is here!

All Saints’ Day, also called All Hallows or Hallowmas

hard winter times the poor would come out and beg for food from the more wealthy families, in return they asked for the poor to pray for their relatives that had passed away.

And that’s basically all you need to know about Halloween, well apart from what you’re going to wear (Hey! I gave you the bed sheet idea), where you’re going to go and what games you’re going to play. Oh and lime jelly is a definite must for any party, make it a little creepier with some red grapes and er, the Vodka is optional!

Canterbury displayed on the night, with some acts stronger than others. Once the emotions and stage fright were gone, the performers really tried their best to impress the judges.

One of the non-singing acts was a male dancer; although he showed a lot of skill in his first performance, the judges decided they wanted to see more and requested a second dance. He delivered and earned his place in boot camp.

The final act was a self named ‘comedy act’. They started off with football skills and then switched to break dancing a short way in. The judges weren’t amazed by their performance and decided they don’t have

but the sabbatical officers acting as mentors as well. We will also bring back the ol’ clapper-meter so that the audience also has a say in who is going through to the final.

Friday night brought the first round of auditions for Canterbury’s Got Talent, where students from Canterbury Christ Church University had the chance to show off their talents in front of the judges. For the first show held in the Students’ Union, we had our very own Kelly Rolwand (Jo Bartson-Umuliisa), Louie Walsh (Matt Power) and Sharon Osborn (myself, Stacey Hawes).

Singing was the main talent

With the first ever show on the 21st October, Canterbury’s Got Talent has lived up to the expectation. Format? We are trying to give students all the oportunities to show off their talent in front of everyone, and that is why he have replaced previous years’ Pop Factor with a more general show.

We want to keep it as close to Britain’s Got Talent as possible, with live auditions, judges, a big audience and of course, the boot camp. The only thing that we will be doing differently is follow last years’ pattern and not have the judges’ houses,

Canterbury’s Got Talent has started!!!the talent they were looking for and sent them home with no place in the next round.

The night ended with most of the contestants having a place in boot camp, but the surprise of the night came from our very own Dermot O’Leary (Jack Willams) showing his very own talent and skill by performing a dance. This years’ contestants have stepped up a gear and we haven’t even finished the auditions!

This is not the end of Canterbury’s Got Talent! If you have a talent you want to show everyone, the second round of live auditions is taking place on the 4th November, in the Students’ Union from 8 pm.

Next week, Amanda Holden (Silvia Rasca) and Michael McIntyre (Anca Popescu) will be joining Kelly and Louis on the judging panel.

What’s the prize at the end? the Canterbury’s Got Talent winner gets the honour of opening the main stage at the Summer Ball. And that’s not all ... they also get free VIP tickets for the ball too and festival tickets on top, so it’s not a bad prize really.

To book a place, all you have to do is email Lauren at [email protected] or just turn up on the night.

Dear Sabbs,

I have just started my studies at Christ Church in Accounting. I went to the freshers’ fayre in September and signed up for several clubs, but now I’ve decided to only join Badminton and Athletics. Can you tell me how and where I can register for these, please? I was also told that I need to have a membership card so that I can get discounted membership at the Sports Centre. Where can I get the card from?

Cheers.

Liam S.

Ask the Sabbs ...Hi Liam,

I’m glad to hear that you found sport clubs that you are interested in. Membership is a common problem the Students’ Union is trying to address, so you’ve come to the right place.

If you have decided on the clubs you want to join, all you have to do is go to our online shop (you can access it at www.ccsushop.co.uk), click on the club or society you with to become part of (in your case Badminton and Athletics) and pay for it, and you’re all done!

Now, if you wish to join more than one, (as it is in your case), you register and pay membership for both, but then you can email us, and we will refund you the standard fee for

one of them (£25 for sport clubs and £10 for societies). You can only do this only when you join either two or more societies, or alternatively two or more sport clubs; so you can’t mix-and-match sports and societies.

As for the membership card, I’m afraid we don’t make them anymore. If you needed one for discounted gym membership for the Sports Centre, all you have to do is show them your confirmation email (the one you received when you payed your sports or society membership). You can also ask your team captain or president to provide the Sports Centre with a list with all the members (they can get this from myself or Matt Power, if they don’t have one already).

Facebook chat, 11 a.m in the morning, my dad comes online;

Me: Dad! Maybe I got into the journalist community of my university! I have to write an initial article of 300 words.

Dad: That’s great! Remember to make it unique… write about the riots in Italy and around Italy for the economic crisis…

Me: hum yeah! …. I’ll….I’ll think about it, dad!

It’s been a while now that I don’t write for the public anymore. I used to have a blog back in high school and I liked to call myself “Little Star Without a Sky”. I was the number one dreamer of my generation. I had my idol Carrie Bradshaw and her dream job, I had the patience to wait for that teenage dream lover Katie Perry sang about last summer and I always had to be brought down to Earth by my family and friends.

Maybe that’s why everybody followed my blog. It wasn’t just virtual, it was in its own little dimension, where people

could escape the reality check that is never that friendly and comforting.

Here I am now, third year of university, nineteen years old, studying a subject that deals with a crude reality everyday (politics) and far away from being a star without a sky.Should I listen to my dad and write about the manifestations in Italy?

Do you guys need a further “anchor” to keep you flat feet to the ground? What if I were to be that cute little umbrella that you can open up on a windy day and fly away? Like those pretty little movies we used to watch when we still couldn’t distinguish reality from dreams?

If you want a reality check, then let me tell you I have plenty to say if you wish to listen. Maybe we live and experience the same problems from time to time.

Hands up if you have panic attacks for an essay that WILL BE FINE but you just need to have that little panic attack!

Offer me a drink if you have those days where you just lie

on your bed facing the ceiling wondering what to do and wishing your life here in uni could have been like in those american/californian TV series? (Where are those beautiful happy people with not even a spot free in their daily agenda?).

Any girls who experienced (or are experiencing) bulimia or other nutrition disorders? Let’s have a coffee! Oh, and what about relationships? (no girl, don’t go there, not yet…)

Well, awkwardly enough, I have a lot to say… and I don’t feel like writing a reality check for now because this article to me is exactly the opposite right now. It’s an umbrella in this windy morning. It’s a chance to look a little more like a character from an American TV series with something to do and it makes me feel a little better about myself as I can fool my brain I am doing something related to uni (so I’ll even spend less on tranquilizers.

If this article doesn’t make it, then you can send me back to my bedroom facing ceilings a little more. But hey, at least I’ve tried right?

Developing our students so that they are able to engage with the ‘wicked problems’ that face our society is at the heart of the university’s new ‘Futures Initiative’. ‘Wicked problems’, ranging from the recent inner city riots, or the banking crisis, to climate change, are regarded as “so complex that you have to be highly intelligent and well informed just to be undecided about them”. The Futures Initiative is designed to create

the next generation of critical thinkers and problem solvers to deal with these issues, and individuals who have some sense of who they are, and their place in the universe.

The Futures Initiative is designed to embed the concept of ‘education for sustainability’ across our degree programmes, so that students are better able to deal with the complex issues they will encounter both in the workplace, and in society more generally. This initiative is also strongly focused on improving the employment prospects of

CCCU students, by equipping them with the tools and skills required by today’s employers.

The initiative also seeks to explode the myth that ‘sustainability’ is just about ‘green issues’, but instead covers a wide range of social, economic, and cultural concerns, as well as protection of the natural environment. Building sustainable communities is as much about creating healthy populations, supporting efficient commercial enterprises, and developing neighbourhood cohesion, as about recycling and waste management – this requires ‘sustainability literate’ graduates from all disciplines - from business, health, the arts, education, and the social and natural sciences.

Silvia Rasca, SU President, states:

“The University creates an excellent environment with students at the centre. The University takes into account all different stages of the student journey, approaching it from an academic perspective, as well as the support and

development stages that are so crucial to the student experience. It is constantly working towards improving that experience with the ultimate aim to prepare graduates for a thriving future career. I was involved in all the key stages of the development of the Futures Initiative to make sure that the student need is fully thought through when developing the right mechanisms for students to become critical thinkers, informed citizens and indeed skilled and employable graduates. I encourage you all to get involved in the Futures Initiative and take advantage

of a great opportunity that will benefit your employability skills.”

Professor Peter Vujakovic, the university lead for the project, notes “The initiative is currently recruiting staff and student teams to work together to develop innovative course materials, and approaches to learning, that are focused on understanding and solving ‘wicked problems’. Watch out for developments in your department, this could be your chance to influence how students are taught in the future.”

The small discrete chocolate shop, along The Borough road (where Lanfranc is situated), shows another reason to how Canterbury’s business’ are unique to the City.

Whilst the exterior may be quaint and effortless, the kitchen is filled with creativity, flair and a dedicated team. The shop specifically orders their exquisite chocolate from Belgium and uses exclusive old French recipes, making the perfect combination to producing award winning chocolate for their customers.

All goods are created on site and often are personalised. They are then distributed not only to the many loyal customers that the business

has, but they also trade to a range of other businesses outside of Canterbury including London.

Like many other companies at the moment, Madame Oiseau has found a shift in consumer expenditure. However, the change has come from the

trading side of the business rather than the loyalty of its customers.

What’s more, the price of chocolate has gone up as a whole, which has been another difficult factor for the chocolatier’s.

This shows how the close relationships and the personalised service in which the employees have built up with their customers, have had a competitive advantage during these difficult times.

So if you’re looking for something particularly special to buy for your mum, or if you have a birthday of a close friend coming up, drop into Madame Oiseau. Their unique hand painted personalised chocolates are the perfect gift for a wide range of occasions.

Although there are many other retailers for chocolate, the expertise and quality that Madame Oiseau provides will be hard to find anywhere else!

With Halloween coming up it is the perfect excuse to turn what would be a healthy apple into a sickly treat, and what better way to do so than with this rocky road recipe. This is personally one of my favourite Halloween recipes and great for parties, as you can prepare them hours in advance.

You will need: • 6 apples• 6 wooden sticks • 400g toffee• 2 tablespoons water• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

extract• 100g marshmallows,

chopped• 175g chopped pecans,

toasted• 175g dark chocolate,

chopped

1. First start by getting your wooden sticks and inserting

them about ¾ of the way into the stem of each apple. You could always double the recipe if 6 toffee apples just aren’t enough.

2. You then need to combine the toffee and the water in a saucepan and cook on a low heat, while stirring. You want the toffee to melt, so that it will be easy to cover the apple later. Once it melts add the vanilla and give it a quick stir.

3. Time to say goodbye to the healthy apples, by dipping them into the toffee, completely covering them. It’s Halloween! You’re allowed a little junk food, otherwise what’s the point?

4. Now lay the marshmallows and pecans on a plate and roll the apples over them, coating each apple in the mixture. You then want to leave them in the fridge for awhile to chill.

5. Here comes the fun part, melt the chocolate either in the

microwave or in a saucepan. If you do so in a microwave keep checking on it, there is nothing worse than burnt chocolate, especially for the poor guy that has to do the washing up. Now drizzle the melted chocolate over the apple. Return them to the fridge until you are ready to

eat them.

Your Halloween treat is now complete, all that is left to do now is to get your costume on and enjoy the party...

... and all the food you have cooked, of course.

RESULTS UK and Student Stop AIDs Campaign have launched an exciting competition to find a dedicated student with a journalistic flair and passion for global health. They are looking for innovative reporting with advocacy potential, based on the theme of TB, HIV or TB-HIV coinfection.

The winning entrant will attend a parliamentary delegation in South Africa in February 2012, accompanying UK MPs and grassroots activists to meet people affected by TB and HIV, learning about the successes and challenges related to combating both diseases.

South Africa accounts for 28 per cent of the world’s people living with both HIV and TB and is addressing these major health challenges using new and innovative integration tools, to fight a single epidemic of TB/HIV coinfection. This delegation presents a unique opportunity to see firsthand how the battle against TB is being fought.

The deadline is 5pm on Wednesday 30th November. Please contact Amy Sheppey at RESULTS UK via email [email protected] or telephone 020 7499 8238 to receive an application form and a copy of the Terms and Conditions.

UNIFIED encourages all students to get involved as it is a great opportunity to get involved with an international NGO and build experience in journalism, international development, global health and politics. The competition is opened to all students from all departments.

Hauntingly Halloweeny Home Cooking ...Rocky Road Toffee Apples

Being half Italian, I clearly love spaghetti Bolognese. After coming to university I decided to experiment with my mum’s recipe. Looking for something that didn’t cost as much to make, this being the result and I dare say it is even better.

The great thing about this recipe is, as well it being cheap and easy to make, it can be made and frozen for a later date. I normally have it for dinner on the day it’s cooked and then freeze the rest.

You will need: - 1 chopped onion - Pepper- 2 carrots chopped into

cubes - Sugar- Either lamb or beef mince - 2 tins of chopped tomatoes - Vegetable stock cube - Worcester sauce - Mixed herbs - 1 clove of garlic chopped

You can also add- 1 pack of pancetta - Green beans chopped

1. Firstly add the chopped onion, garlic and carrot to a saucepan with a little oil. The less oil the better especially if you are using lamb mince, as it can be quite greasy, even though I personally think it tastes better. Cook on a low heat until the onions start to soften.

2. Add the mince to the saucepan and cook until it is brown. Also add the pancetta if you decide to include it.

3. Add a dash of Worcester sauce and a crumbled stock cube, stir all together. Also add the green beans if you are using them.

4. Add a little pepper and a teaspoon of sugar.

5. Now add the chopped tomatoes and a sprinkle of mixed herbs, and then stir.

6. Place the saucepan lid on and leave on the lowest heat for 15 minutes.

7. Turn the heat off and leave until the pasta is ready and then turn the heat back on for 5 minutes to warm the sauce up. It should be left for at least an hour but the longer the better.

I personally enjoy this dish

Italian Spaghetti Bolognesebest with a few slices of garlic bread on the side, a long with a program on TV and a glass of Red if you fancy it.

is the secret to creating an original Halloween look?

A last minute morph suit or witches hat usually does the trick, however if you feel the need to put a little more imagination into your costume this year, it is not impossible to find something just as fun but a little more inventive that still won’t break the bank.

When looking for a scary but stylish costume on a student budget knowing where to look for inspiration is key. Halloween is a great excuse to re-watch your horror film collection. Dressing as a character from a film is always a safe choice, but on a budget there is the risk that your Christian Bale impression will look more ‘Binman’ than

Batman.

Going classic is always a hit, think Jason from Friday The 13th and sport a hockey mask and weathered clothes. The eerie nurse is another classic look , a bandaged head and blood stained clothes creates a Silent Hill vibe or for a more sinister but sultry look take inspiration from Elle’s nurse disguise in Tarantino’s Kill Bill.

When you are tight on cash simplicity is everything. Face paint, fake blood, a pair of scissors and a bit of dirt turns any cheap outfit into a zombie costume. Try picking an era for your zombie alter-ego: throw on a pair of skinny jeans, a stripy t-shirt, give yourself a faux-hawk and voilà, one

undead punk. If you are not a fan of the sex pistols a vampire bride might be more your style: a white dress, some lace, a bit of fake blood, teeth and you are good to go.

For the more fashion conscious it is possible to create an effective costume without having to douse yourself with fake blood. You could wear a black outfit, white tights and dark feathers to recreate a version of Swan Lake’s Black swan. Take inspiration from Natalie Portman’s role in the 2010 film and use dramatic make up to create a chilling and dark look.

Wherever you find your inspiration remember that there are plenty of ways to create

an inventive and fun costume without spending too much, so there is no excusing a scream mask or superhero T-shirt this year.

Fashion - Scare in style this Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner and the need for an original costume is imminent. Every year hoards of vampires, witches and sexy devils can be seen roaming the city, but what

Review of a fashion blog: crackcosette.com

How to find inspiration for an original and fun costume on a student budget

It is not what you wear but how you wear it. This in particular is what makes fashion blogs such as ‘crackcosette.com’ so successful. Simply put, most fashion blogs are created by everyday girls and guys who love fashion and want to give their opinion on the latest trends and styles. This is what makes them so appealing because it is a visual sounding-board for men and women to be inspired by.

Unlike looking at celebrity magazines, a fashion-blog is infused with a sense of both normality and originality that can rarely be gained from magazines such as ‘Vogue’ or ‘Glamour’ and therefore the average woman finds fashion suddenly much more approachable and achievable through the use of a fashion blog.

Most importantly however, is that they promote individuality; the idea that it doesn’t matter what you wear, or where it’s from as long as it suits YOU and makes YOU feel good. This is perfect for students and this is what blogs such

as crackcosette.com by the twenty year old Swedish Cosette Karin Backman aim to project.

When first entering the site

you immediately associate the blog with art. The illustration of a girl lounging on a sofa with a cup of tea and a book by George Orwell is both engaging and inspiring. Already there is a beautifully simple touch to Cosette’s look. She is able to be both fashion-inspiring but completely within human achievement at the same time. Tall and statuesque she may

be, but with flaming red hair (a colour so extraordinary and yet rarely seen in mainstream fashion) and a quirky sense of style she is pretty much the average student.

Her thoughts are whimsical “I stopped at a roadside with chestnuts, and recalled autumn days when I was much younger than I am now…” this memory inspires her to create an autumnal look. A very simple outfit, the main piece consisting of a tan trench-coat, yet the look is brought to life by her statement red lipstick

‘look’.

Indeed it appears that most of the stimuli for her outfits are inspired by anything and everything around her, nature in particular. She draws ideas from two images of a moth: first a white lace look complete with a wide brimmed hat – the epitome of summer cool, from an image of a white moth dappled with grey.

The second, an all-black outfit, with large ‘Harry Potter’ glasses a black jumper, bag and beret, the inspiration being drawn this time from a jet black

moth. It is examples such as these - compared with her staple ‘key’ pieces that always include a variation of the black-lace up boot, red lips, and more often than not a vintage item of clothing - that allows Cossette to have such a refreshing and modern spin on fashion today. Taking inspiration from the past and the present and turning it into a look that is both highly desirable and easy to achieve.

Many of our instructors boast a number of different backgrounds and experience from personal training, performance analysis, cardiac rehabilitation and are here to help to improve health, fitness and performance.

New developments proposed at the sports centre include a central basketball show court which will be used for events such as the annual varsity fixture and some of the BUCS fixtures. A 9m high climbing wall will be installed in September which will give an opportunity of students to experience the sport of rock climbing and add to the wide range of facilities we have here at the centre

The university has recently received funding from Sport England for the ‘Try-sport’ programme which is aimed at giving students the opportunity to experience sports that they may not have tried before such as futsal, sitting volleyball and surfing but also sports that they may not have tried for many years such as netball, tennis, badminton and running sports.
