April 13 – American’s Creed Day

I believe in the United States of

America as a Government of the

people, by the people, for the people; whose just

powers are derived from the consent of the gov-

erned; a democracy in a republic, a sovereign Na-

tion of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one

and inseparable; established upon those principles

of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for

which American patriots sacrificed their lives and

fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to

love it, to support its Constitution; to obey its laws;

to respect its Flag; and to defend it against all ene-

mies. American's Creed Day is a Wisconsin Public School Observance Day recognizing the Ameri-can's Creed, written in 1917 by William Tyler Page, a messenger in the U.S. House of Represen-tatives. His essay was judged the "best summary of American political faith" in a national contest.

8th Graders can start bringing in one baby picture and a recent photo for the end of the year PowerPoint. Do some Spring Break cleaning!!!! Pictures are due no later than Friday, April 26.

Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week April 15-19, 2013

Wisconsin Severe Weather Facts • Wisconsin averages 23 tornadoes annually. Last year,

only 4 tornadoes were reported in Wisconsin by the National Weather Service (NWS).

• The strongest tornado, rated EF2, hit near Patch Grove in Grant County on September 4, 2012. No fatalities or injuries occurred with the tornadoes.

• The peak tornado season in Wisconsin is April to Au-gust, but tornadoes can occur any time of year, like the January 7, 2008 storms near Kenosha.

• Tornadoes can occur any time during the day or night, but are most frequent between 4 pm and 9 pm.

• Know what they know! Everyone should have multiple ways to receive weather information. A NOAA weather radio, access to local TV, and Smart Phone apps can keep you informed when severe weather threatens.

Be sure to have a plan at home:

• In a home or building move to a pre-designated shelter, such as a basement, and get under a sturdy table or the stairs.

• If a basement is not available, move to a small interior room or hallway on the lowest floor and get under a sturdy table. Put as many walls as possible between you and the storm.

• Stay away from windows.

April Public School Observance Days

Prisoner of War Remembrance Day-April 9, commemorates the date during World War II when the largest number of Americans were captured in the Conquest of Bataan. Guber-natorial proclamation shall suitably recognize those who suf-fered captivity in foreign countries while in active service with the U.S. armed forces and request that some portion of the day be used for solemn contemplation on the plight of those who have been held prisoners of war. Enacted Nov. 29, 2001 from the 2001 Laws of Wisconsin, Act 20 budget bill.

Patriot’s Day-April 19. Patriots were colonists who wanted independence from British rule. Most hoped to find peaceful ways to settle their differences with England. When the British decided to look for Samuel Adams and John Hancock, who were hiding in Concord, Paul Revere and Billy Dawes rode through the night warning other Patriots in New England. The American Revolution began when the first shots were fired at Lexington on April 19, 1775. Each side said the other fired first. Patriots' Day was established to mark the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Enacted August 30, 2001, from the 2001 Laws of Wisconsin, Act 16 budget bill.

Environmental Awareness Day

(also known as EARTH DAY) April 22

Former Wisconsin governor and U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day in 1970 to organize a national public demonstration that would bring atten-tion to the environment. His efforts made environmental issues an integral part of political debate. Environmental Awareness Day marks the anniversary of Earth Day, (a Public School Ob-servance Day). In honor of Earth Day UGES will be participat-ing in many special Earth Day activities that week. Keep in-formed on these and other upcoming events in the Daily Ex-press on the school website .

About FIRST Robotics and Margaret Rivest, 8th grade First Robotics is a program that promotes science and technology in the community. Teams of students have six weeks to build a robot that completes the given chal-lenges successfully. The video below describes this year's challenge. Not only do teams build robots, but they do lots of community outreach. They volunteer in the community and promote the values of FIRST every-where they go. Awards are given to the teams that have the best outreach programs and show enthusiasm for ro-botics and learning. The following link describes this year’s challenge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa5MGEZNrf0 Margaret’s team has already done wonderfully this year! Robotics Team #1714 competed March 7th-9th at the FRC regional in Duluth, MN. They finished the competi-tion with a record of 6-4, and placed 21st out of 50 teams. By the end of the tournament, they were able to climb to the top of the pyramid for a 30 point score, one of only 3 teams to do so in the entire tournament. They received the Engineering Inspiration Award, one of the highest honors in FIRST. This award qualifies them for the World Championships in St. Louis. They had another amazing accomplishment at their last regional - a top-level climb! Here is also a link to a short You Tube video of their ro-bot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zv_u2x76v90 Best of luck to Margaret and her team in St. Louis at the World Championships.
