Casimir Pulaski Day – March 4
Casimir Pulaski was born in Warka, Poland, on March 4, 1747. He
was a brigadier general and chief of cavalry in the American Revo-
lution. He died in 1779.
In Paris Pulaski met Benjamin Franklin, who was recruiting volun-
teers to fight in America's War of Independence. Pulaski enthusias-
tically responded to Franklin's plea for assistance. In his letter of
introduction to Washington, Franklin wrote of Pulaski as "an officer
famous throughout Europe for his bravery and conduct in defense
of the liberties of his country against ... great invading powers".
While awaiting his formal appointment by Congress, Pulaski was
invited by Washington to serve on his staff during the Battle of
Brandywine in September, 1777. Pulaski's performance during this
baptism of blood in America earned him a commission as Brigadier
General of the entire American cavalry.
In 1779, Pulaski was ordered to join General Lincoln in the South
to help recapture Savannah. After French General D'Estaing, leader
in the attack on the southern capital, fell wounded, Pulaski is report-
ed to have rushed forward to assume command and raise the sol-
diers' spirits by his example and courage, only to be mortally
wounded himself. Pulaski was named the "Father of the American
Cavalry", and remains one of the well known figures of the Ameri-
can Revolutionary War. There is hardly a state in America without
a county or town, street or square, monument or tablet, school or
highway named in grateful memory of General Casimir Pulaski.

"The Great Hunger" in Ireland-Because the potato was easy to
grow under a variety of conditions and a good source of food, it
became the dominant crop in Ireland. By 1845, approximately one-
third of Ireland's 8.1 million people ate only potatoes for their diet.
An adult would consume between 11 and 14 pounds of potatoes per
day; children under age 11 averaged not quite 5 pounds of potatoes
per day. When a fungus ruined the potato crop in three out of four
seasons between 1845 and 1849, an estimated 750,000 Irish people,
weakened by hunger, died from disease and starvation and another
2 million emigrated to Britain, Canada, Australia, and the United
States. "The Great Hunger," also known as the Great Famine or
Irish Potato Famine, is considered by many to be the most tragic
event in Irish history.
