Fostering Independent Livingfor Savannah’s Homeless
2010 ANNUAL PERFORMANCE REPORT
By any measure, 2010 served as a landmark year for Union
Mission, Inc. As the recession deepened, workers lost their
jobs and the economic outlook worsened, the need in our
community grew. From shelter and health care to family
counseling and job training, the need for Union Mission’s
services truly exploded in 2010.
Thankfully, Union Mission responded to this urgent need in
our community, making a difference in the lives of families
and individuals throughout coastal Georgia.
Union Mission’s mission is to end and prevent homelessness
in the greater Savannah area. We provide shelter for hundreds of homeless people each year,
but do so much more to help those in need. In 2010, this non-profit organization provided
critical housing, job training, health care, substance abuse counseling and additional
services, addressing both the root causes and the end result of homelessness.
Despite an array of challenges, 2010 was a year of great success for Union Mission. The
organization hosted a Family Health Fair, Prostate Cancer Screening and many other free
events. Grants provided funds to help high-risk, HIV-positive individuals and to launch
an innovative new program designed to deliver enhanced behavioral health services to
homeless adults in Savannah. Through the Angel Tree Program, we helped make the
holidays brighter for homeless families and children.
Since 1936, Union Mission has been providing vital humanitarian and social services to
Savannah’s homeless and special needs communities. A strategic network of programs
provides solutions and offers hope, even in the darkest times. Every day, we all face the
challenges that come our way, but sometimes we need a helping hand. Union Mission
offers that support to those who need it most. Please review Union Mission’s 2010 Annual
Report in detail for a deeper understanding of how Union Mission helps those in need in
our community and for insight into some of the organization’s most inspiring “success
stories” for 2010. While Union Mission has made considerable progress in helping end
homelessness, there is still much work to be done. We appreciate your support and look
forward to making a positive impact in our community in 2011 and beyond.
Sincerely,
Gerald L. Rainey
Chairman
Union Mission, Inc. Board of Directors
A Message From the ChairmanIn July 2010, Frances Carter, Ph.D. was selected as the new
President and CEO of Union Mission. Frances continues
Union Mission’s longstanding tradition of exceptional
leadership, bringing extensive experience in the non-profit
sector to her position.
Over the years, she served as Associate Director of Academic
Programs at Mercer University School of Medicine, Special
Projects Director for the Central Georgia Cancer Coalition,
Grants Chair for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation and Psychometrist for the Department of
Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Mercer University School of Medicine.
Frances continued to lead Union Mission forward as she met with public and private groups
in Washington, D.C. to determine the best course of action in the face of a serious economic
downturn. Through successful strategic planning and collaborative efforts, Frances provided
visible leadership in achieving community-wide homeless services and prevention objectives.
She embraced private-sector fundraising, federal and state resource development, and
effective governmental and private sector relationships which will carry Union Mission through
these turbulent times and help end homelessness.
Union Mission strives for excellence in leadership and is proud to have an executive
management team with such passion for the work we do. Our steadfast commitment to
helping others rebuild their lives enables us to attract the best and brightest to work together
to end and prevent homelessness in the Savannah area.

Union Mission Annual Report 2010
Union Mission’s future has never looked brighter. As of January 1, 2011, the J.C. Lewis Health Care Center became an independent corporation, stepping out from beneath the Union Mission umbrella. This change means that we can focus on our core work, which is reducing homelessness in our community.
We understand that shelter is a basic human need for everyone. At Union Mission, we offer emergency shelter and permanent housing solutions to those in need. In fact, we provide eight different programs providing a wide range of housing options.
Union Mission had another successful year in 2010, fulfilling our goal of reducing homelessness and providing assistance to those in need right here in our own community.
In 2010, Union Mission touched the lives of more than 4,000 people through a variety of programs. Every day, we provide housing for more than 650 individuals in need. Please read about our 2010 programs and learn more about our many success stories in the pages of this Annual Report.
As many of you know, the key to our success lies in the dedication of our hard-working staff. We have a talented, devoted team of professionals who help those in need in our community throughout the year. From providing shelter to offering counseling, the Union Mission staff goes above and beyond the call of duty every day, making sure that individuals and families get the help they so desperately need.
Since 1936, Union Mission has served as a beacon of hope in good times and bad times. We couldn’t do the work we do at Union Mission without local, state and federal funding and without the support we receive from people like you. Thank you for your commitment to our cause and for your belief in our mission. I’m proud to be part of a community that makes reducing homelessness a priority. I’m proud to help create an environment that encourage independence.
I’m proud to be part of Union Mission.
Sincerely,
Frances Carter, Ph.D.President and CEOUnion Mission, Inc.

journey of chemical dependency at the age to 17,
explaining that “family members and boredom”
led her to experiment with drugs.
Thanks to her involvement with Union Mission’s
counseling program, she has been drug-free for
nearly three years. “Now I feel free,” she enthuses.
Tina is grateful to the staff at Union Mission, who

At Union Mission we understand that the first step to self-sufficiency is steady
employment. The Employment & Training Center (ETC) provides employment
services, life skills training, work training, job placement, and follow-up services
to homeless and at-risk for homelessness persons. We combine these services
with our substance abuse counseling and drug-free policies to create the optimal
environment for talents to grow and thrive in the workforce.

Job Training
Success StoryMarvin, a local entrepreneur, experienced
homelessness for the first time in his life in 2009, after
his attempt to launch a new business failed. Although
this former management consultant had a B.S. in
Computer Science and excellent job experience, he
had difficulty finding employment.
Marvin turned to Union Mission for help, staying at
the emergency shelter and enrolling in GAWORK$,
a Department of Labor program which matches
unemployed workers with for-profit, non-profit or
government entities to work 24 hours a week for six
weeks. One of Marvin’s employers was so impressed
with his job skills and
his work ethic that the
temporary position
became permanent.
