Math – Grade 6 Statistics and Probability Display Numerical Data in Plots Monday, May 18 – Friday, May 22

PURPOSE

Building on content from previous grade levels, students will develop an understanding of statistics displayed in a variety of ways and apply that understanding as they summarize, describe and analyze sets of data. Students will use dot plots, histograms, and box plots, and bar graphs to represent and analyze data distributions for quantitative data. Standards addressed in part or in whole: 6.SP.B.4, 6.SP.B.5

Guiding Questions:

• Monday: How many observations were recorded? Could you list all of the data?

• Tuesday: Does this display use both the x and y axes? What does each axis represent?

• Wednesday: Can you calculate the mean, median, mode, and range from the data display? If so, calculate them.

• Thursday: Would you be able to determine your maximum and minimum from this display? If so, list them.

PRODUCT

Friday: Choose one of the following:

1. Collecting Data and Creating a Histogram. • Step 1: Create a survey polling 20 people both family and friends.

• Step 2: Organize your data in a chart or table.

• Step 3: Analyze the data you collected visualizing the distribution of ages. Thinking about the following questions: Do I know more young people, more teenagers, more middle age people, or more seniors? Make observations based on your data. Place the ages into different buckets/bins/or categories and the number of people that corresponds with each bucket. *Hint: 10 year ranges. Ages 1-9, 10-19, 20-29, etc.

• Step 4: With the data collected create a histogram. Remember to color code your categories.
