Unit 18 Evaluation

What?I have been looking up numerous topics to do with advertising. For this unit, I had to complete four separate tasks. There were three main areas for unit 18, they were research, concept development and production. I briefly looked at images of bus advertising on Google and template designs by other students. Here’s one of my favorite choices of designs (right).

What?For the research assignments, I had to look up visual language, semiotics, product branding and product advertising on the internet.

The reason for me to do this was to help me understand the culture of advertising and how it’s developed. I had to choose one out of five products to use for my design, and my choice is Xbox 360 because I’m pretty much a fan.

When moving on to concept development I had to design my own ideas by drawing on a bus template. Finally, for the production I used Adobe Photoshop to create my final design on the bus template.

How?I used Google images on the internet to help me find pictures and ideas of Xbox 360. The information I got about advertising was from different websites, including Wikipedia. I also used Moodle to look on the resources by John Clamp.

How?When using Adobe Photoshop, I used a number of different tools. These include ‘Crop tool’, ‘Magic tool’, ‘Move tool’, ‘Eraser tool’, ‘Zoom tool’, ‘Pen tool’ and ‘Text tool’. I also used layers and path selections. On the left (including on the right of other pages) is a rough sketch of my bus design.

Project ReviewWhen researching for information, I found some research assignments a little tricky to understand the meaning. I used an online dictionary and had teaching assistance to help to figure out the meaning of words. Some images were hard to find when typing down the words on Google, and again I had some teaching assistance help. I’m hoping my final design will have the title, slogan, pattern and icon (maybe a famous character) on both sides of the bus, and the product to be shown on the back.

Project ReviewFor Adobe Photoshop, I have used it before but remembering what tools to use was hard. At times I experimented with different tools and in the end I was pleased with the work I’ve done. I think this task has gone well for me. I feel my bus design is really “eye-catching” and I am happy with my work. The slogan “The future of gaming is here!!!” is my idea, because I think Xbox 360 is years ahead of today.

Future WorkFor the future, I would like to learn more about the use of Adobe Photoshop and to understand it more. At sometime I would like to design posters for various things, e.g. films and TV shows. Another thing is designing CD albums (mainly for ‘Metal’ or ‘Rock’).

Future WorkNext time I should try and gather information by not just using the internet, but going to the library and look at books and magazines. I could also use my “phone camera” to take images for research.
