I. The Method of the First Advent The central theme of the Bible is the coming of God’s only Son into the world as Savior.

A. Prophecy of the First Advent Foretold in the Old Testament

Genesis 3:15 – God curses Satan and foretells the birth of Christ.

Satan would be defeated through Eve’s “offspring”.

Jesus dealt a fatal blow to Satan through His resurrection thus giving Christ the ultimate

victory.

The Messianic seed mentioned will restore that which was lost through disobedience.

Numbers 24:17 reveals four things about the coming Savior:

1. A star of Jacob – light and direction

2. A scepter out of Israel - right to rule which implies Jesus will be of noble birth.

3. He will come from Jacob’s offspring

4. He will have dominion – authority and power

Isaiah 11:1-10 also foretells the birth of Christ – refers to human lineage of Jesus through

the royal line of David, the son of Jesse.

Isaiah 7:13-14 also predicts coming Savior:

1. Origin was the House of David

2. Messiah would be born of a virgin.

3. His name would be Immanuel (God with us).

Isaiah is considered one of the greatest prophetic books in the Bible – especially for the redemptive prophecies concerning Christ.

Matthew 1:1 – seeks to establish the earthly bloodline of Christ through his mother,

Mary.

Matthew 1:2 – the generations of Jesus began and continued all the way through His legal father,

Joseph.

God is Jesus’ real Father but He provided Joseph, a man of Jacob’s house, to care for Jesus.

Isaiah 11:1 – gives indication that Jesus – the Branch, a main life center – shall come

forth through Jesse.

Matthew 1:5-6 – Jesus came from the seed of Jesse.

Isaiah is considered the prophet of redemption. His name means “Salvation of Jehovah.”

Matthew 1:23,25 fulfills Isaiah 7:14.

The fulfillment of these prophesies are proof that God’s Word is divinely inspired.

II. The Purpose of the First Advent

A. The Mission of the First Advent

Genesis 14:13-20 introduces us to Melchizedek.

Hebrews 7:2-3 tells us that he was a king of righteousness and peace, without father or mother, having neither beginning nor ending of his life.

Hebrews 7:15 shows Melchizedek as a fore-type of

Jesus Christ and of His priestly office for his people.

The mission of a priest is to bring the people’s sins before God and to offer a sacrifice which would

bring forgiveness.

Page 13: UNIT 2 – FULFILLED PROPHECISES ABOUT CHRIST Section 1 – The First Advent of the Messiah SECTION 1 – THE FIRST ADVENT OF THE MESSIAH By the end of this.

UNIT 2 – FULFILLED PROPHECISES ABOUT CHRISTSection 1 – The First Advent of the Messiah

GO BROWNS! Hebrews 7:25 states that Jesus is able to save His people if they come to Him and that He makes intercession for us, pleading our case

before the judgment seat of God.

Romans 3:10 reminds us that the reason all people need Jesus as their Savior and Priest is because

of sin.

Numbers 21:6-9 foretells the mission of Jesus as the

Savior of mankind. He has been lifted up on the cross as the world’s hope and all those

who look on Him will be saved.

GO BROWNS!

Psalm 110:4 speaks of Christ taking on Himself the role of Priest forever.

Isaiah 4:2-6 prophesies that Jesus would cleanse mankind from their sins and restore them

to fellowship with God.

I. The Offices of the Messiah Foretold Many OT prophets foretold that Christ would serve in

specific offices as the Messiah.

A. His Redemptive Office Foretold

Psalm 22 gives a detailed account of the humiliation and suffering which Jesus was to endure as our Redeemer.

Ps. 22:1: The Messiah will cry out, asking why His heavenly Father has forsaken Him.

Ps. 22:5: The Messiah will be a Deliverer and a Redeemer of His people.

GO BROWNS! Ps. 22:6-8: The Messiah would be mocked, laughed at, and considered to be a reproach.

Ps. 22:12-17: Describes the physical abuse and mutilation, torment and suffering associated with the

death of Jesus.

Ps. 22:18: Speaks of the casting of lots for the robe of Jesus.

GO BROWNS! Jonah 1:17 foretells the exact number of days Jesus would remain in the grave, a prediction of Jesus’ burial before He was to confirm His victory over death (Matt. 12:40).

Old Testament passages often present truth for that specific time and need as well as foretell (prophesy)

of a future event which may occur in a manner similar to that which happened historically.

B. His Servant’s Office Foretold

Zechariah 3:8 portrays God’s Son as a servant.

Isaiah 42:1-4 tells us that as a servant Christ will be humble.

Philippians 2:7 tells us that Christ took upon himself

“the very nature of a servant.”

God’s mission for His Son Jesus was to serve and meet the needs of a dying world.

Isaiah 32:1-2 portrays various ways in which Christ

served in the capacity of a servant.

Isaiah 32:1-2 calls Jesus - a King (Ps. 24:7; Is. 43:15; Jer. 46:18; Ez. 26:7

Jn. 12:15; 1 Tim. 1:17). - a shelter and a refuge (2 Sam. 22:2) - streams of water in the desert (Jn. 7:38)

C. Characteristics of Biblical Prophecy

Prophecy is a declaration of future events, knowledge which belongs exclusively to

the omniscience of God.

Prophecy is, by its nature, a manifestation of the supernatural light of God.

Prophecy is explained by God in Deuteronomy 18:18-22:

1. God put the words in the mouths of the prophets.

2. The prophet spoke only what God commanded.

Page 27: UNIT 2 – FULFILLED PROPHECISES ABOUT CHRIST Section 1 – The First Advent of the Messiah SECTION 1 – THE FIRST ADVENT OF THE MESSIAH By the end of this.

UNIT 2 – FULFILLED PROPHECISES ABOUT CHRISTSection 2 – The Messianic Offices

GO BROWNS!

3. People are to pay strict attention to words of God’s prophets. 4. If a prophecy is from God, then the test is that

the prophecy will happen exactly as spoken.

Real prophecy is a vital part of the Bible. Biblical prophecy is found throughout the Old

Testament and was also a means of establishing the Old Testament.

Prophecy pervades the entire Bible. (historical, poetic, wisdom, prophetic, Gospels,

Epistles, Revelation)

Page 28: UNIT 2 – FULFILLED PROPHECISES ABOUT CHRIST Section 1 – The First Advent of the Messiah SECTION 1 – THE FIRST ADVENT OF THE MESSIAH By the end of this.

GO BROWNS!

Prophecy, in many cases, is very specific. People are named before birth, kingdoms are outlined before their existence, and battles are described before they occur.

Prophecy often deals with events remote in time and with people or kingdoms that do not

yet exist.

Fulfillment of prophecy is clear. Fulfilled prophecy constitutes a supernatural act.

I. The Offices of the Messiah Fulfilled

A. His Redemptive Office Fulfilled

Psalm 16:10 describes how Jesus would triumph over death. Matthew 16:21 and 28:6 fulfill this prophecy.

Fulfillment is the historical evidence of the authenticity of biblical prophecy.

Isaiah 4:4 is fulfilled in Matthew 26:28

B. His Servant’s Office Fulfilled

Zechariah 3:8 portrays God’s Son as a servant. This prophecy is fulfilled in Philippians 2:7 when Paul

said Jesus took the form of a servant.

Jesus served in two ways:

1. Jesus was an obedient servant and was loyal to the plan of salvation and to His part in that plan.

2. Jesus served those with whom He came in contact here on earth.

This submission to His Father was made clear in John 4:34
