II. The Purpose of the First Advent
A. The Mission of the First Advent
Genesis 14:13-20 introduces us to Melchizedek.
Hebrews 7:2-3 tells us that he was a king of righteousness and peace, without father or mother, having neither beginning nor ending of his life.
Hebrews 7:15 shows Melchizedek as a fore-type of
Jesus Christ and of His priestly office for his people.
The mission of a priest is to bring the people’s sins before God and to offer a sacrifice which would
bring forgiveness.

before the judgment seat of God.
Romans 3:10 reminds us that the reason all people need Jesus as their Savior and Priest is because
of sin.
Numbers 21:6-9 foretells the mission of Jesus as the
Savior of mankind. He has been lifted up on the cross as the world’s hope and all those
who look on Him will be saved.

C. Characteristics of Biblical Prophecy
Prophecy is a declaration of future events, knowledge which belongs exclusively to
the omniscience of God.
Prophecy is, by its nature, a manifestation of the supernatural light of God.
Prophecy is explained by God in Deuteronomy 18:18-22:
1. God put the words in the mouths of the prophets.
2. The prophet spoke only what God commanded.

3. People are to pay strict attention to words of God’s prophets. 4. If a prophecy is from God, then the test is that
the prophecy will happen exactly as spoken.
Real prophecy is a vital part of the Bible. Biblical prophecy is found throughout the Old
Testament and was also a means of establishing the Old Testament.
Prophecy pervades the entire Bible. (historical, poetic, wisdom, prophetic, Gospels,
Epistles, Revelation)

Prophecy, in many cases, is very specific. People are named before birth, kingdoms are outlined before their existence, and battles are described before they occur.
Prophecy often deals with events remote in time and with people or kingdoms that do not
yet exist.
Fulfillment of prophecy is clear. Fulfilled prophecy constitutes a supernatural act.

B. His Servant’s Office Fulfilled
Zechariah 3:8 portrays God’s Son as a servant. This prophecy is fulfilled in Philippians 2:7 when Paul
said Jesus took the form of a servant.
Jesus served in two ways:
1. Jesus was an obedient servant and was loyal to the plan of salvation and to His part in that plan.
2. Jesus served those with whom He came in contact here on earth.
This submission to His Father was made clear in John 4:34
