p HUDDLE UPS (OPT IONAL)

Huddle ups are for churches that have a drop-off time before the session begins. There are multiple ideas for interaction during this time, such as simple games that children can play on the floor or within whatever arrangements you gather your kids. Leaders can ask “get-to-know-you” questions after welcoming kids into their groups.

(Print the following for your small group leaders.)

Trust and Follow

• Before the session, tape a line of masking tape along the floor to indicate a start line and on the opposite side of the room for an end line.

• Greet children as they arrive to your Huddle Up group.

• Place the kids into two equal teams. Ask each team to form a line behind the start line.

• Explain that the first two kids on each team should stand back to back and lock elbows.

• Guide the child who is facing forward to lead their partner to the end line. Note that the partner will be walking backwards since elbows are locked. Explain that when the pair gets to the end line, the roles reverse, and the partner becomes the leader to guide them back to the start.

• Instruct the pair to join the end of the team’s line and encourage the next pair of children to complete the relay. Continue play as time allows or until every child has a turn.

• Lead a discussion on how it felt to trust their partners when they couldn’t see where they were going. Comment that today kids will learn that Jesus wants people to love, trust, and follow Him.

Hey, kids! You guys sound like you’re ready to worship! Let’s get this day started! You know what to do! 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1!

That was great, everyone! I always like hearing you guys count down to our worship time. We have some important things to learn today. In fact, I’m hoping you can guess. Do you see a clue? (display the heart with the word “love” visible; encourage kids to respond) That’s right! Today we will talk a lot about love. So, what is love? (allow kids to respond) Those are some great answers! Now, what if I turn this heart around and show you a different word? (display the side of the heart that says “obey”) What does it mean to obey? (allow for responses) Do you think these two words, love and obey, go together? (allow for responses)

See how these two hearts are stuck together? (demonstrate) That’s because love and obedience work together. If you disobey your parents, are you showing them that you love them a whole lot? No, of course not! Obeying your parents by following their instructions or their rules is one great way to show your love for them. Do you think it works the same way with God? Yes! We trust God and follow His instructions because we love Him. Today we will learn that Jesus wants people to love, trust, and follow Him. (Show Life Point slide.) Let’s say that together. Jesus wants people to love, trust, and follow Him.

The best way we can show our love for Jesus is by trusting Him as our Savior and following His instructions in the Bible. Today’s Bible verse helps us know that we can trust in Jesus and believe that He is God’s Son. Let’s say it together.

Game Instructions:

• “Stay-In-Place Follow the Leaders” is played like regular “Follow the Leader,” except kids stay in place in front of their seats and a team of kid leaders stands at the front of the room.

• Choose 8-10 kid leaders who will stand in a row in front of the group. The host gently taps the back of a leader and holds the party hat over his head. The leader claps, stomps, marches in place, or moves however he wants. The entire group follows his example.

• After 20-30 seconds, the host holds the hat over a different leader who will move differently.

• Continue the game until each leader leads at least one action.

• Option: Begin by moving from leader to leader in line, but if time allows, jump from leader to leader more quickly and out of order.

Hello, kids! Today’s game is all about following. First, we need some volunteer leaders.

(Quickly choose 8-10 kids to be leaders and introduce them.)

Our volunteers will line up here so you can see them and do what they do. I will hold the party hat over one leader’s head, and she will jump in place or nod her head or whatever she wants to do. Your job is to do what she does. Any questions?

Oh, wait a minute! One problem … if I am behind our leaders, they won’t see me move to a new leader. So, leaders, when it is your turn, I will touch your back so you will know the hat is over your head and you can start moving.

Remember, you can stomp your feet or touch your toes, but you can’t run around the room. If you want to run or walk or march, you have to do it in place like this. (demonstrate)

Any questions? On your mark, get set, go!

(Play fun music as kids move. All adult leaders should spread out around the group so everyone will move carefully. The host will move to a new “leader” every 20 seconds or so to give each child in front a turn to lead.)

Great job! That was fun. Thank you leaders and thank you followers. When Jesus was on earth, He chose twelve men to be His disciples, and they followed Him. We will hear more about one of these disciples, Peter, in our Bible story today.

Good job! You guys are really great followers!

You know, we mentioned earlier that Jesus wants people to LOVE, TRUST, and FOLLOW Him. It was easy to follow the leaders during our game today because we could see them standing in front of us. So, how are we supposed to follow Jesus if we can’t see Him? (allow for responses)

We may not be able to see Jesus with our eyes, but we can still follow Him. We can read His instructions to us in the Bible! Can you think of some instructions God gives us in the Bible? (Allow for responses. Encourage ideas such as loving your neighbor, obeying parents, worshiping God only, and so forth.) Those are all great answers!

Today we will learn about a man named Peter. Peter was one of Jesus’ disciples, but today we will see a time when Peter did not do such a great job of following Jesus. In fact, Jesus had to ask Peter if he even loved Him at all! That sounds pretty intense, doesn’t it? I’m anxious to find out what happened, but before we get to our Bible story, let’s visit with the Mayflower kids (or our True 2 Life team) and spend some more time singing together.

Tyler enters, leading Kate by the arm. She is blindfolded. Note: Make sure though it looks like Kate is blindfolded to the audience and that she can actually see. This will keep her safe.

Tyler: You’re doing good, Kate. You’re doing good.

Kate: (nervously) I don’t like this very much …

Tyler: Now, you know I wouldn’t let anything happen to you. After all, you showed me the secret of being an awesome bumper car driver at Wheel World.

Kate: That’s right. Now I trust you to drive me safely.

Tyler: (placing Kate on one side of the stage and moving to the other side) Now stay there. Trust me.

Kate: (feeling the air with her arms) Tyler. Tyler? Where did you go?

Tyler: Trust me.

Kate: I do trust you. At least, I think I do. How do I know if I trust you?

Tyler: That’s just it. I don’t know if you trust me. You’re the only one who knows that. Now take a step toward me.

Kate: (anxiously) What?

Tyler: Take a step toward me. Just listen to my voice and walk toward me.

Kate: I can’t walk. I’m blindfolded.

Tyler: You’re wearing a blindfold not a “leg fold.” Nothing is tied around your legs. Nothing is keeping you from walking.

Kate: Then I am.

Tyler: You are what?

Kate: I’m keeping me from walking.

Tyler: OK. Good point. Then stop keeping yourself from walking and come here.

Kate: (taking one baby step) OK. I’m doing it. I did it!

Tyler: Good job. Now take about ten more.

Kate: Ten more. No way.

Tyler: Trust me. Listen to my voice and walk toward me.

Kate: I’m not taking one more step.

Tyler: OK, if you don’t trust me, you can take off the blindfold.

Kate: Oh, Tyler. Trust can be hard. I know you won’t let anything happen to me. OK, here goes. (walks slowly toward Tyler with her arms out in front of her)

Tyler: (touching the tip of her fingers when she comes near him) Great job. Take off your blindfold. You did it.

Kate: Whew! Walking is easy—when you can see where you’re going. Not trusting … that takes … uh … trust.

(They exit.)

Hi, kids! It’s a great day to get together and hear a story from God’s Word. Today, our Bible story is from the Book of John. It is about Peter and Jesus.

On the night before Jesus was crucified, He went to a garden to pray. One of Jesus’ disciples, Judas, planned to betray Jesus. Judas brought soldiers and some other officials. They came to the garden with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

Peter grabbed his sword and cut off the ear of the high priest’s servant. Jesus scolded Peter. “Put your sword away!” Jesus commanded. “Am I not to do what My Father has planned for me?”

Wow! Let’s think about that for a minute. What did Jesus tell Peter? Jesus said, “Put your sword away.” Jesus did not want Peter to get in the way of what was about to happen. Jesus knew that everything that would happen was part of God’s plan. The soldiers arrested Jesus and took Him away.

Let’s read John 18:15-18 to see what happened next.

(Open Bible and read John 18:15-18.) Meanwhile, Simon Peter was following Jesus, as was another disciple. That disciple was an acquaintance of the high priest; so he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard. But Peter remained standing outside by the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the girl who was the doorkeeper and brought Peter in.

Then the slave girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?”

“I am not!” he said. Now the slaves and the temple police had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold. They were standing there warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, warming himself.

Did you catch what Peter did? Someone asked if he was a follower of Jesus, and what did he say? No! But that’s not all that happened!

(Read John 18:25-27.) Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, “You aren’t one of His disciples too, are you?”

He denied it and said, “I am not!”

One of the high priest’s slaves, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you with Him in the garden?”

Peter then denied it again. Immediately a rooster crowed.

Three times, someone asked Peter, “Are you a follower? Aren’t you one of Jesus’ disciples?” Three times, Peter said, “I am not.” Jesus had predicted Peter would deny him three times before the rooster crowed in the early morning. As soon as Peter denied Jesus for the third time, the rooster crowed.

Then Jesus died on the cross and was buried. After three days, He was resurrected just as He had promised.

Can you imagine how confusing all of this must have been for Peter and the other disciples? Do you remember that many of the disciples were fishermen before they started following Jesus? Peter said to the others, “I’m going fishing.”

“We’re coming with you,” they told him. Peter and some other disciples went fishing in Galilee. They fished all night and caught nothing. When Jesus called to them from the shore, the disciples didn’t recognize Him.

“Cast your net on the other side!” Jesus said. When they did, the net was full of fish. The disciples recognized Jesus.

As soon as Peter heard that it was Jesus, he dove into the water and swam toward Jesus. The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish with them. When they got to land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread. Listen to what Jesus said to Peter.

(Read John 21:15-17.) When they had eaten breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said to Him, “You know that I love You.”

“Feed My lambs,” He told him.

A second time He asked him, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said to Him, “You know that I love You.”

“Shepherd My sheep,” He told him.

He asked him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?”

Peter was grieved that He asked him the third time, “Do you love Me?” He said, “Lord, You know everything! You know that I love You.”

“Feed My sheep,” Jesus said.

Once, twice, three times, Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love Me?” Let’s ask that question and emphasize a different word each time. Repeat them with me. DO you love Me? (repeat) Do YOU love Me? (repeat) Do you LOVE Me? (repeat) Do you love ME? (repeat)

kind, obeying God.) Do YOU love Jesus? Every person has the opportunity to love Jesus. Do you LOVE Jesus or do you simply show some interest in Him every now and then? And lastly, do you love JESUS? Jesus wants you to love Him.

(Show Christ Focus slide.) Jesus wanted Peter to love, trust, and follow Him. He wants us to do the same thing. We can have eternal life with God and Jesus when we trust in Jesus as our Savior. Do you love Jesus? That’s a question that we probably all want to quickly say: “Yes! Of course, I love Jesus!” But, today we’ve learned that SAYING you love Jesus is very different from SHOWING you love Jesus. Peter learned that lesson the hard way. (show heart pocket) He had to learn that LOVE and OBEY work together. If we say that we love Jesus, but we don’t trust Him or follow Him, that’s not really love.

You know, Peter had a really bad day. He messed up, didn’t he? And, sometimes we mess up, too. The good news is that not only does God want you to love Him, but He loves you back! His love for you is the whole reason Jesus came to earth in the first place. Jesus wants people to love, trust, and follow Him. (Show Life Point slide.) (speaking into headset) Great job, team! That’s a wrap! (speaking to kids) OK … so I guess I need to fix a few things that I said earlier. Remember when I told you that I LOVED my job, and I LOVED the design idea, and I LOVED the music … and the lights … and the countdown … Well, maybe I was just a bit excited. After today’s Bible story I started thinking about what LOVE really means. When I said that I loved all of those things, what I meant was that I really like them a whole lot. But, to say that we LOVE something or someone is completely different, isn’t it? I mean, I like apple pie, but I LOVE my mom!

Today, Peter learned a hard lesson about what it means to love Jesus. He learned that to love Jesus meant more than just saying words. He needed to show his love by his actions … by obeying Jesus and following Him. Jesus wants people to love Him, but He wants us to show our love by trusting Him and obeying His commands. Missions Story

Uganda and South Sudan: The Karamojong

Jeremy Taliaferro and Robert Lane are missionaries in Uganda and South Sudan. These two men and their families minister to a group of people called the Karamojong (ke-rah-moh-jong).

Three words describe what life is like for the Karamojong:

• War: The Karamojong are warlike. They live in a country where people and groups fight against one another.

• Famine: The Karamojong know what it is like to be hungry. They are unable to grow enough food for themselves.

• Suffer: The Karamojong are shepherds. Their lives revolve around cows, goats, and sheep. They work hard, but they are almost always hungry and worried about war.

Three facts describe what life is like for missionaries to the Karamojong:

• Missionaries can often observe people in colorful clothes working with their cattle. They hear

Karamojong beating drums and see them dancing.

• Missionaries’ homes are very simple. They use solar panels for electricity and hand pumps for water. When conditions are right, they get an hour or two of Internet access each week.

• Missionaries are not building churches or hiring pastors or even preaching sermons. They simply live among the Karamojong, loving people and sharing Jesus with anyone who is willing to listen.

Missionaries to the Karamojong would like for you to pray:

• that the Karamojong will not be afraid of God.

• that the missionaries will be able to share about God in a way that the Karamojong can understand.

• that short-term missionaries will come to help minister to the Karamojong.
