Fraud• Synonyms: deception, scam,
trick
• Noun1. the crime of deceiving
someone for personal or financial gain
- He went to jail for fraud.
2. A person or thing that is meant to deceive someone
-The doctor was a fraud.
Deceive
• Synonyms: trick, mislead
• Verb: to make (someone) believe something untrue (needs an object)
• The boyfriend is deceiving his girlfriend.
• The little girl is trying to deceive her parents.
Deception• Synonym: fraud, trick,
deceit
• Noun: the act of deceiving someone
• The boyfriend’s deception hurt the girlfriend.
• The girl’s parents punished her because of her deception.
Con Man/ Con Woman
• Synonym: a fraud
• Noun: a man/woman who tricks or cheats someone
• The couple lost their savings to a con man.
Impersonate• Synonym: imitate, mimic
• Verb: pretend to be another person
• Many people try to impersonate President Obama and Elvis.
• The con man plans to impersonate Sarah, David, Elaine, and Steve.
Identity Theft
• Noun: illegal use of someone else’s personal information
• Michelle Brown was the victim of identity theft.
Motive
• Synonyms: reason, stimulus
• Noun: a reason for doing something
• The con man’s motive was money.
Luxury
• Synonym: extravagance, opulence
• Noun or Adjective: state of great comfort or wealth
• He lives in luxury.• He has a luxury house
and a luxury car.
Honest
• Synonym: truthful
• Adjective: good and truthful
• Parents encourage their children to be honest.
• President Lincoln is remembered as an honest man.
Honesty
• Synonyms: truthfulness, integrity
• Noun: the quality of being honest
• A famous saying is that honesty is the best policy.
• She is respected for her kindness and honesty.
Fake
• Adjective: not real– The bag is fake.
• Noun: a person or thing that looks real– The bag is a fake.
• Verb: to make something seem real– The student faked that he
was sick.
Phony• Synonym: fake
• Adjective: not real or genuine– Monopoly money is phony.– Your accent sounds phony.
• Noun: fraudulent person or thing– What a phony! She never
meant to help us.– The painting is a phony.
Duplicate• Synonyms: copy, replicate
• Verb: to make an exact copy of something– Do not duplicate the key.
• Noun: a copy of – The man in the picture has
many duplicates.
• Adjective: the same as something else – This is a duplicate key.
Suspicious• Synonym: questionable,
doubtful
• Adjective: 1. having distrust of someone
or something - The woman feels suspicious
about something.
2. causing distrust (can describe people or things)
- Does the man look suspicious?-The behavior of the person in the pictures is suspicious.
Fishy• Synonyms: suspicious,
questionable, doubtful
• Adjective1. Causing feelings of doubt
or suspicion (something is fishy, not someone)
-There is something fishy about this picture.
2. Related to fish-This soup has a fishy taste.
Consequence
• Synonyms: result, outcome, effect
• Noun: Something that happens as a result of an action (often used to express negative outcomes)
• There are financial and emotional consequences of fraud.
Arrest Warrant
• Noun: a legal document that gives permission to arrest someone
• There was an arrest warrant out for Michelle Brown in Texas.
Weary
• Synonyms: tired, exhausted
• Adjective: feeling or showing tiredness
• The women feel weary.
Astonishing
• Synonyms: surprising, amazing
• Adjective: causing a feeling of great surprise
• The X-Men are astonishing.
• She gave an astonishing performance.
(to be) Astonished
• Synonyms: surprised, amazed
• Adjective: feeling or showing great surprise (usually used (to be) astonished)
• The girl in the picture is
astonished.
Tidy
• Adjective: clean, organized; not messy
• Synonym: neat, orderly– The room was very tidy.
• Verb: to make something clean and organized
• Synonym: clean, organize– She tidied the room.
