He had uncombed hair, dirty clothes, and only 35 cents in his pocket. In Baltimore, Maryland, he got on a bus and headed straight for the toilet.

He thought that if he hid in the toilet, he could ride to New York without paying.

without 後接動名詞 (paying) 為受詞,表「不做…地」• She walked away without looking bac

k.• I never go to London without visiting

the British Museum. (一…就必定…)

But a passenger at the back of the bus saw him.

at the back of = in the back of 在…後面(←→ in the front of )• There is an appendix at the back of the book.• There is a trash can at the back of the classroom.

Page 21: Unit 3 Misunderstandings Deborah Soong Teaching Activities Index.

He tapped the person in front ofhim on the shoulder and said, “There’s a bum in the toilet. Tell the bus driver.”

in front of 在…前面(←→ behind, in back of )• There was a car parked in front of my house.in front of 與 in the front of 的區別:in front of 意為 “ 在 …之前 ”• I can’t see the notice clearly because a huge man is standing in front of it.in the front of 意為 “ 位於…前面的部分 ”• I’m used to sitting in the front of a bus.

Page 22: Unit 3 Misunderstandings Deborah Soong Teaching Activities Index.

That passenger tapped the person sitting in front of him. “Tell the bus driver there’s a bum in the toilet,” he said.

the person sitting in front of him → the person who sat in front of him現在分詞片語常由關係子句簡化而來。• The girl standing near the window is my daughter.

Page 23: Unit 3 Misunderstandings Deborah Soong Teaching Activities Index.

The message was passed from person to person until it reached the front of the bus.

from N to N 表「從…到…」該形式的片語中即使名詞為可數名詞,一律用單數型,也不加冠詞。until 和 till 引導副詞子句接在表「持續性」的動詞(如 pass, stay, wait )之後,主要子句需用肯定句。• You may stay here until the rain stops.

Page 24: Unit 3 Misunderstandings Deborah Soong Teaching Activities Index.

But somewhere along the way, the message changed. By the time it reached the bus driver, it was not “There’s a bum in the toilet” but “There’s a bomb in the toilet. The driver immediately pulled over to the side of the highway and radioed the police.

by the time = by the time (when/that); before 在…之前• He had gone by the time we got there.

Page 25: Unit 3 Misunderstandings Deborah Soong Teaching Activities Index.

When the police arrived, they told the passengers to get off the bus and stay far away. Then they closed the highway. That soon caused a 15-mile-long traffic jam. With the help of a dog, the police searched the bus for two hours. Of course, they found no bomb.

that 乃代名詞,代替之前提到的事。

口語中,也常如此使用。15-mile 是複合字,其單位名詞一定是單數型。例如 a five-year-old girl, a ten-foot-long rope 。

Two similar-sounding English words also caused trouble for a man who wanted to fly from Los Angeles to Oakland, California.

similar-sounding 是 adj+V-ing 所形成的複合形容詞。 • a(n) odd/good-looking man • a sweet-smelling flower關係代名詞 who 引導的形容詞子句 , 修飾先行詞。

Oakland was north of Los Angeles, but the plane seemed to be heading west. When he looked out of his window, all he could see was ocean.

all he could see → the only thing that he could see 句型 : All (that) What• All you have to do is sign your name here.
