UNIT 5: THE LIFE OF CHRIST – PART 2

UNIT 5: THE LIFE OF CHRIST –

PART 2

UNIT 5: THE LIFE OF CHRIST – PART 2

• The Gospels tell us about Jesus’ actions and words in different ways and in different sequences.

• The reason is because the authors wrote the stories of Jesus from different perspectives.

- John emphasized the divinity and majesty of Jesus.

- Luke emphasized Jesus’ healings and His ministry to the lowly and unfortunate.

UNIT 5: THE LIFE OF CHRIST – PART 2

- Mark emphasizes the sufferings that Jesus and disciples endured.

- Matthew (the most “Jewish”) emphasizes how Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament.

• In the essentials (the importance of Jesus Christ, His life, death, and resurrection) all four Gospels are the same.

• The Holy Spirit us the one true author of the Gospels.

• Jesus conducted both tours, or campaigns, in

Galilee and retreats from Galilee.

UNIT 5: THE LIFE OF CHRIST – PART 2

• Jesus made Capernaum His home and “mission base” in Galilee.

• Jesus’ public ministry was accompanied by miracles.

• Miracles are extraordinary and supernatural occurrences in nature and in the lives of people.

• Most of Christ’s miracles occurred during the first portion of His 3½ year public ministry.

Section 1 – Public Ministry in Galilee

UNIT 5: THE LIFE OF CHRIST – PART 2

A. Four Main Purposes of Miracles

1. Miracles were a sign of His Person and of His work (Mk 2:10).

2. Miracles reveal Jesus’ divine compassion (Mt 9:36).

3. Miracles instructed the disciples about the importance of faith (Lk 8:25).

4. Miracles glorify the heavenly Father (Lk 7:16).

C. The Demoniac of Gadara (Gerasenes)

Scripture: Mark 5:1-20

• Possessed by a legion of unclean spirit.

• Purpose of this miracle was to demonstrate Jesus’ authority over the devil’s evil powers.

D. The Feeding of the Five Thousand

Scripture: Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-15, 26-35

• Only miracle recorded in all four Gospels.

• Purpose of this miracle was to teach about Jesus’ person and work.

• Jesus used this miracle to teach that He is “the bread of Life” (Jn 6:35).

• Caused the people to remember the words of

Moses that a prophet like him would come.

Section 1 – Public Ministry in Galilee

UNIT 5: THE LIFE OF CHRIST – PART 2

• This prophet was also the Messiah.

• This miracle demonstrated Jesus’ authority in

three ways:

1. Showed omnipotence in provided food for the multitude.

2. Revealed His Messiahship.

3. Showed He had the ability to provide for man’s physical and spiritual needs.

II. PARABLES

• Jesus used parables to teach divine truths in everyday life.

• Three stages of Jesus’ ministry in Galilee.

2. Shift from miracles to teaching parables.

3. Training the twelve disciples

Section 1 – Public Ministry in Galilee

UNIT 5: THE LIFE OF CHRIST – PART 2

A. Miracles to Parables

• Due to the increase in opposition to Jesus’ ministry from religious leaders, Jesus increased His use of parables and decreased His use of miracles.

• Jesus also began to speak less publicly to the crowds and more to those that followed Him.

• Jesus used these parables to fulfill the Old Testament passage of Psalm 78:2.

Section 1 – Public Ministry in Galilee

UNIT 5: THE LIFE OF CHRIST – PART 2

B. Purpose of Parables

• The purpose of Jesus’ parables was to both reveal and conceal truth (Mt 13:11-17).

- revealed to the disciples

- concealed from others

• By using these parables, Jesus was using something familiar to explain truths that were

unfamiliar.

• Jesus’ ultimate purpose was to explain the mysteries of the Kingdom of God.

Section 1 – Public Ministry in Galilee

UNIT 5: THE LIFE OF CHRIST – PART 2

• Parables make listeners pay attention to discover the truth, while they also conceal the truth from those who are too lazy, stubborn, or busy with other things.

C. The Parable of the Prodigal Son (Lk 15:11- 32)

• In this parable Jesus taught about the compassion and mercy of God toward sinners.

• This answered the Pharisees’ murmurs in Luke 15:2

UNIT 5: THE LIFE OF CHRIST – PART 2

• According to John 3:17, Jesus came to save

the world, not condemn it.

• One distinction of a parable is that it does not necessarily refer to real people or to actual places.

• Younger son represented sinners who return

to God.

• The joy expressed by the father shows the joy our Heavenly Father has when a sinner repents.

Section 1 – Public Ministry in Galilee

UNIT 5: THE LIFE OF CHRIST – PART 2

• Older brother represent the unforgiving Pharisees and scribes.

Application:

• As Christians we should always be looking for ways to help others return the Lord.

• We should always rejoice when others receive Christ into their hearts.

• We should take comfort in knowing that when we do sin, our Heavenly Father will take us back if we repent and confess our sins.
