Grade 1S and 1B have been looking at
“Our School Community”
Our central idea was
Everyone has a role in our School
Community
Tuning In We need to start by finding our what
we already know…we did it by brainstorming together and made a list of all of the people we know in our school community. The students drew the people that they knew.
Tuning InWe used pictures to help us think about what we
already know.
Tuning InWe showed what we already know by
putting a circle around the different people in our school community and
talking about the jobs they have.
Tuning InWe showed what we already
know by making collages of people we know in our school
communityMs Dingle
Mrs. Carrollo
Finding OutNow we were ready to find out
more…We decided it would be good to ask people in
our school community questions to find out more information. But first, we needed to
make a list of questions to ask. We needed to think about what makes a good question
and the words we use.
Who? What? Where? When? Why?
Finding OutWe were ready to find out more…
We decided to ask these questions:What is your name? What is your job?
We practiced asking each other these questions before we went for our
walk!
Finding OutWe interviewed members of our
school community
Finding Out
We needed to find out even more information about people in our
community. So we decided to invite people to come to our
classrooms to interview them.
Again, we looked at our question words to help us think about questions we could ask.
Who? What? Where? When? Why?
Finding OutWe decided to invite our special guests using an
Invitation we made together.
Finding OutWe were ready to find out more…
We asked Mr Moody
What is your job?
What is your favourite job?
Finding outWe were ready to find out more…
We asked Mrs. Carrollo
What is your job?
What is your favourite job?
Finding OutWe were ready to find out more…
We asked Simon’s mum, Frances
What is your job?
Sorting OutNow we had to think about and sort
out what we had learnt! So we made a map of our school and pasted
pictures of the people in our school community in the places we would find them!
Sorting out
This is what our map looked like!
Sorting Out We had to think about and sort out
what we had learnt! So we made riddles to show what we
had found out about people in our community
Sorting OutWe had to continue to think about and
sort out what we had learntWe brainstormed the groups of people in
our school community who work together. We put them in the triangle shape to show
the different sizes of each group.
Going FurtherNext, we drew the faces of some of the
people in our school community groups and put them on to paper cups. Then we placed
the cups on top of each other with the largest group at the bottom and the smallest
group at the top. The pyramid shape represented our entire school community!
Going FurtherWhen we had finished we asked ourselves “What would happen to the pyramid if we took away one of our school community
groups?”
Making Conclusions
The activity showed us that if all of the groups in our school community didn’t work together that our school community would ‘break’!
In other words…’everyone in our school works together to make our School Community a happy place to be!’
